go home

by soundofmind

Author's note: I played and sung this song so if you're able, please listen along (by clicking this link) as you read!

Here, where it began you held your
Heart between your hands
It fell through your fingers like sand
And never were you found the same again

Dying like a fading light,
So was your hope cloaked in night
And no one pressed you, dared to change
‘Cause none knew you by your true name

Intertwined and stories told
But I knew that your heart was sold
To another, greater wine
You thirst for justice and a sign

Go home, Go home
There’s nothing left for you, now
Take your bags
Go home, go home

We were friends when you were tame
But as time passed, passed the blame
On your lying, stone-carved face
You picked your life up and gave chase

Run, boy run, I know you’re fast
I know you’re running from your past
So count me as just one more pain
To leave in dust, what’s lost is gain

Go home, Go home
There’s nothing left for you here
Take your bags
Go home, go home

“What if there is no home I can return to
And there’s no place I can call home?”
You should’ve thought of that ‘fore you deceived me
So go on, you’re in this alone

Go home, Go home
There’s nothing for you here, now
Take your bags
Go home, go home

Hey! Zekcede here!

I’m here to review this absolutely stunning song by you, soundofmind! so first of all, my thoughts whilst listening: at the beginning, I thought you sounded a little breathy, but I quickly changed my mind. the harmony was stunning. Also, wow, your breath control is amazing. And finally, the lyrics sent chills up my spine! This was so impressive! Not only did you write these haunting lyrics, but also the instrumental? so much talent in one person! I really have no criticism here, as this was breathtaking for me. you really could impress anyone with this. as I said before, this was haunting, with such an impressive and empowering message. keep up the good work and thanks for reading! have a wonderful day.

Wow! I really enjoyed this I especially liked that you made an audio with it that was really cool and the instrumental and singing is really good. It gives off a very strong feeling but in a really good way. The song flowed really well. When the go home part came it was so somber but like in a really good way especially the high notes. Keep writing/ singing I hope to review more from you soon!

hello, it's yellow!

the music nerd in me had to review this and listen to it and I LOVE IT! this is absolutely gorgeous and the composition of the song itself is absolutely wonderful. i thoroughly enjoyed how you incorporated harmonies and variations in rhythm. i thought your phrasing was very interesting, but i loved it nonetheless.

with the lyrics itself, i really enjoyed how it tells a story. there's a progression of the story and i really do admire that. in your singing, i'd also like to note that i love the fidelity in your voice and tone, while the lyrics themselves are, in a sense, mysterious and vehement with emotion. one of my critiques is that your diction in a few places seemed a bit muddled, so i really had to look at the lyrics to follow along. while i was listening and reading along, i did have a thought.

“What if there is no home I can return to
And there’s no place I can call home?”
You should’ve thought of that ‘fore you deceived me
So go on, you’re in this alone

Go home, Go home
There’s nothing for you here, now
Take your bags
Go home, go home

first of all, i loved the triplet feel in the bridge, that was absolutely gorgeous and unexpected. though, while you did connect the bridge and chorus, could there be possibly another verse in between the two? maybe adding that verse onto the bridge? totally up to you because what you have works, but i also think it would be interesting if you attempted that! :)

with the vocals themselves, i would really like to hear a three-part harmony. the split you had was gorgeous, but i would love to hear a third part that would go up to a higher note. if you did this, it would sound so good the second time you sing the chorus. once again, totally up to you!

like i said, this was absolutely amazing. you have so much talent in your writing, singing, and playing. it astonishes me when i see people on the site with another talent aside from writing! i really loved this and i would love to see more songs from you!

Thank you so much for such a thoughtful and helpful review yellow! I agree with you on the diction and whatnot - if I had more time to myself in a quiet home (I live w/someone else at the moment) I would've done a lot more takes until I got it right. I was focusing on other things while playing and the clarity of the words ended up suffering. SAD!! One of these days I'll be able to play and sing at the same time flawlessly :,)

When you say the phrasing was interesting - do you mean the music or the way I phrased things in the lyrics? I don't know if you know how to expound on that but I'd be curious to hear your thoughts!!

There actually was three-part harmony on the choruses at some points at least? I [i]think[/i?] (Me, forgetting what I did in my own song) But it could've gotten lost in the mix (because I am not good at mixing) depending on the volume. That, or that's a slip in my memory.

I did have some challenges finding higher harmonies that didn't bother me (I'm pretty picky w/harmonies) so I'd have to suffer through working them out if I were to put more in haha.

Thank you again for your suggestions and feedback! So glad you enjoyed the song!

that totally makes sense!

with the phrasing, i don't hear a lot of songs that have that similar kind of phrasing. when i was reading along, i was thinking you were going to go one direction with the phrasing, but you went in a different way. i just think that it's a matter of fact that most of the music we hear nowadays is so similar and over-produced, so what you did made it really interesting and unique!

with the three-part harmonies, maybe i didn't hear them. if i didn't hear them correctly, super sorry about that! once again though, amazing work!

soundofmind says...

aaa that makes sense!! :,) I'm happy to hear that it was unique lol!!

AND YOU ARE SO VALID thank you again!!

Hi soundofmind!
I have never reviewed lyrics before, but I will give it my best try since I love this song so much. This song is so beautiful and I am so glad that you included a recording of you singing this song. Your voice is incredible, and I loved it when you added the harmony part because it really added a haunting feeling that was very beautiful. This sounds like a sad and pained song and it really conveys heartwrenching emotions very well. I love the lyrics because they communicate your message really well. I don't have any criticism because I feel like this was very well written and sung. So anyway, great job on this, it was so cool to listen to it! As always, keep writing and I look forward to reading and listening to your future pieces. Good luck!

soundofmind says...

I'm glad you liked the harmonies! Haunting is definitely one of the feels I was going for so I'm glad that came across, and all those emotions you listed are definitely spot on! Yay!

Thank you so much and I'm glad you enjoyed the song!

Jeeeez, Sound. This is something quite incredible. I would totally buy this if it was on an album, the composition and vocals are amazing and it's so clean it sounds professionally made. I hope you never under appreciate your own talent.

soundofmind says...

Oh my gosh, Tenyo <3 I'm almost crying! Thank you so much!! I can't help but laugh at you saying it sounds professionally made considering I recorded it on my phone and edited in Garageband of all things but it means a lot!!

OMG! This was sooo amazing. Sorry I am not writing it as a review for your work but seriously this song was amazing. I was literally sitting depressed with my college work at 2AM and feeling panicky but then just randomly I opened this and listened to your song. I felt so relieved and calm. sorry I am still new here didn't know you were a girl and I was first expecting a male voice, but then it was a surprise But I must say your voice was really very good. <3

soundofmind says...

Aww, I'm glad the song helped to calm you and that you liked it so much! Thank you!!! And LOL I don't mind you being surprised to hear a feminine voice at all. But yes! I am a female, haha.
