I cannot handle failure.
My entire life I’ve only done good things
and failure is not an option.
Being reprimanded, even lightly, even jokingly,
is a smack to the face
and I always feel the heat of tears.
As a child I received every single compliment,
collecting them all into a basket like Easter eggs.
Forming false self-confidence and making my arms
ache with the pressure of 13 years.
All of the easter eggs have shattered and they were empty,
now I am only surrounded by plastic shards.
Everyone is looking at me,
everyone knows how much I’m losing at this
and I am a failure.

Hello CapitalMonday here to review for you. I would like to begin on how anyone could relate to this poem since many people have been give complaints and people have taken them to where they have kept them with themselves, moving on with life with these complainant.
Anyway, here are so things that i think that need to be changed/positive:
heat of tears it sounds like what it appears; a heated tear rolling down one's face must be painful.
All of the easter eggs have been shattered and they were empty I like this stanza and i think you should change -were to -are to make it present tense.
even lightly, even jokingly these two words sound almost redundant (in a sense)
The positive side of this poem is that most people could agree with this too since when we try to hold these complainants in but as the years go on, these complainants seem to fade away or break away from their owners.
Farewell,
CapitalMonday
Hello!
Easter should be capitalized.I can relate to this poem: I think a lot of people can. I loved the metaphor of the Easter eggs. It fit the poem perfectly. Your pacing was good, and your ending was on point.
I think one thing that could improve this poem is reading it out loud to see if any part sounds awkward or forced to you. There were a few places that were just so barely awkward that I assume it’s just me, so I don’t want to point them out.
I love the message, and I wish you could have used… fancier language? I usually don’t say that. Like, ever. Don’t be afraid to use some imagery-packed, uncommon words. Don’t be afraid to add some more metaphors in there. Right now, I think it just needs a little bit of spice, especially at the beginning.
When I first started reading this, I was bored. Up until the “As a child I received every single compliment” (I love that line, by the way), you used mostly cliché, boring, words and phrases. It just wasn’t a strong way to start out a poem.
I think it would be a stronger start if you alluded to the metaphor in the first line to get us wondering about it. I mean, I wouldn’t connect Easter eggs and failure. So leave the audience wondering until you explain it later on.
I also felt like was a bit awkward.
Anywho, I hope this helps!
Great job, keep writing!

Thank you for the tips ^^ I'll definitely go back and fix some things up!
This poem is intriguing, "I cannot handle failure." Definitely caught my eye. I see so many teens at my high school, be worshiped like there freaking gods, but once someone encounters them and try to fix their flaw, they can't handle it, and they break into tears. It's really sad. But this poem literally shows the truth and mirrors those people. It's not good when people during such a young age get always compliments (even when they don't deserve it) And then once the hit there teens to adult hood they break down, once the real world hits them. Which this poem proves how devastating can be for a child with so much compliments, only to find out the world isn't about that at all. Ha ha especially not in this era. I love how you compare this with basket of Easter eggs it was very clever. I hope you continue writing, it was very entertaining and astounding, and Rock on!
Nice review, teammate!
Lol thanks!
Hello, Jakob! I'll start off by saying that I really enjoyed this poem. Like in many other reviews I've done, I really enjoy trying to guess what the poem is about while reviewing. To be honest with you, I don't think there is much to change. I don't do grammar and I certainly don't do form when it comes to poems because read aloud, can be different depending on who is reading it! I really enjoyed this one because of the fact that it's parallel to real life. So many people nowadays are given praise, not necessarily when they deserve it, and then when they are given negative criticism they cannot handle it. I think a lot of children at young ages are given all positives, no negatives because people want to shield them but in reality that isn't helping at all. It really captures how it affects peoples mental state and why it's harmful in the long run. If the poem is because of something that happened in your life, I want you to know that you are not a failure because of this poem...It's beautiful. Great job!
I like this!
It kind of sums up the feelings you get when you're trying to impress someone. (Not that you are).
I especially love the line, "surrounded by plastic shards". It just completes the poem, even though it's not at the end.
If you're truly an 13 year old girl, this is astounding. You stand above what poets would consider right for an 13 year old. Only because we sometimes forget that talents can come in any form. Not just "roses are red, violets are blue" style poems.
Again, I really like this.
Good luck to you!
Hi! Thank you for your review, but however, I am not an 11 year old boy. As my profile says, I am a 13, almost 14 year old girl, who just happens to be nicknamed 'Jakob.'
I am soooo sorry! I actually THOUGHT I wrote 13... AND I DIDN'T CHECK THE PROFILE. omg im sorry
