I keep having dreams about these things and these people. I can’t even get a good night of sleep. Here I am once again, pulling an all-nighter. I’m finishing up some accounting records on the front porch of an old, inherited house. It’s owned by my friend Jon. Numbers float like ghouls in my mind as the dreams creep up my spine.
These dreams…they feel so real.
It’s the dead of night. My face is illuminated by the shine of my computer screen. The hustle and bustle of the city rings in my ears, interrupting my deep thoughts. The eloquently carved birch wood of the new porch shields me from the smell of the polluted air. Going into the city at night is like going to war. I listen for the occasional pained screams and yells of the night. It might keep me away from these dreams that just keep getting more and more real.
I even look like her…With long red hair and piercing bright purple eyes. She wears this skin-tight suit, as if she’s some sort of doll or model. I cut my hair shoulder-length so I don’t become whatever it is I see in my dreams. I feel scared, like I cannot protect myself or anybody else. I keep having this same dream. Sometimes in first person. Sometimes in third.
The morning comes and the door swings open. My buddy Jon comes out of the house in a suit and tie. He’s a lawyer off to the courthouse to solve some minor disputes. I met him when he acted as my defendant in a case. It was a silly misdemeanor that went down a long time ago. We stayed in touch and grew close. It was a platonic type of close. Just how I like it.
He sat his case on the porch and lit a cigarette, “did you not sleep again, Alice?”
I slurred over my words like a tired, drunken sailor. “You don’t know what I do at night. Maybe I just got out early.”
“You mean you got up early?” Jon corrected with an air of cheekiness.
“Don’t be a smartass. I guess I should get ready for work.” I stood and stretched my arms, looking over the rising sun peeking over the trees. Judging by Jon’s facial reaction, the light illuminated a dark shaded area under my eyes.
“I don’t want you falling asleep at the wheel. I’ll drive you if you want me to wait.”
“Don’t worry. You’ve got clients.” I shrugged away Jon’s concern and bid him farewell, promising him that I’d walk if I really felt like I couldn’t drive.
Ice-cold water ran over my body like lightning wistfully tightening up my pores. Cold showers save money on our water bill, and they always wake me up in the morning. The discomfort makes up for the clarity I feel. I recall the nightmares. Visages of a parallel version of myself echo in my mind. When I go to sleep, it’s like I’m transported into a different world. It feels too real. I see horrors, a man in red holding a gun, an empty desert. It feels so alien, and I feel so hateful. It’s like I’m viewing the world through someone else’s eyes. I guess there’s nothing conventionally scary about them. When I’m in the midst of these dreams, my throat closes up and I freeze. They feel real, like some sort of out-of-body experience. Every time I close my eyes they take hold and my body is torn apart. It’s the restlessness I feel when I’m shocked awake in a cold sweat. That was when I gave up on sleep.
In the mirror, I see the dark circles below my eyes disappear. For work, I wear a black sleeveless button-up shirt, a red skirt and boots. I would rue the day I went to work in heels. I choose a tie from the bottom of a messily organized bag. It has a cartoony portrait of Betty Boop on it. I chose to wear it out of pure delirium.
I sat down at my desk after an awkward elevator ride with coworkers. In all honesty, I had no idea what I was accounting for. My desk is almost featureless. I’m surrounded by a jail cell of cubicle panels with a single monitor sitting in front of me. Hundreds of tabs are opened on my web browser. I glance and think of deleting them, but I don’t have the energy to go through the hassle. Like an emotionless robot, I kept track of payroll as well as other company transactions. I nodded to my higher ups when I saw them, and engaged in small-talk with employees when we ran into each other. I feel more like a ghost outside of my body than an active worker.
My cup of coffee begins to run dry and I feel myself beginning to slip into the sea of dreams. Disembodied voices begin to spin in my head.
“Yes, that will be fine. Thank you, Mr. President.”
“Stocks are down…I hate this place.”
My eyes were starting to slip. Nightmares wouldn’t be a problem if I took a little nap. I can’t risk it, yet the sweet release of sleep would be incredibly satisfying. I fell into a deep sleep. The darkness enveloped by my stinging eyes is too inviting.
“Ms. White! Earth to Ms. White!”
I jolted up. My computer screen was composed of a repeating row of e’s. I looked up at Mr. Redman while deleting the mistake I made. My boss was looking straight down at me with an amused look on his face.
“...H-Hi Mr. Redman. Sorry. I was just a little tired.” I spoke in a pleading tone.
Redman was the worst person that could catch me sleeping. He could fire me, and then decide to start redevelopment on my land. Furthermore, he could likely make me disappear altogether. The city of Santa Barraza was another victim of the destabilization of the government. Corporations, former officials, and people with a large following became the new authority in a United States that wanted to keep from crumbling.
“Oh. Is that so? You seem like you haven’t been getting any sleep at all lately. Is there something going on at home?” Redman asked with father-like concern.
I guess he’s onto me. Words poured from my mouth. “I’ve been having these nightmares. Every time I nod off, I have them, they always feel so real. My body can’t rest, and I end up waking up and getting no sleep.”
I don’t know why I felt the need to tell him, but I did. Maybe I felt like I had to be direct with him so I wasn’t fired, or I was so tired that my brain threw all logic out of the window.
“I see.” He responded stoically.
He’s looking at me like I’m crazy. Maybe I am. I don’t think he believes me. Why did I even tell him? I should’ve just-
Redman came to a conclusion after some thought. “Why don’t you take the day off then? Go and get some help. I know a good sleep therapist that lives downtown. Why don’t you take some money?”
I was about to say something like “I don’t need your charity”. But before I could say anything, he threw some money in my face and let me leave. Continuously reassuring me that I wasn’t getting fired. I guess I oughta go to this sleep therapist. Maybe it can really get my problems taken care of.
I looked down at the large stack of money that Redman gave me. I could also go get a drink, or go gambling, I might even be able to put a down payment on an apartment.
No. Therapy is what matters! This is for the company!
So I went to the bar.
________________________________________________________________________
Bitter wine ran down my throat, causing my body to flutter. Fuck. This is stupid. Why am I doing this? Maybe I won’t have bad dreams anymore if I drink a little more, and again, I start to nod off. Nobody was at the bar except the bartender. She sat in the corner on her phone. One earbud in just in case I asked for another drink.
I got just a little comfortable, and fell asleep right next to my alcohol. It was all black, just how I like it. I fell into a blackened sleep. So liberating.
“Hey. Your Alice White, right? Hey…Wake up!” The voice snapped.
I mumbled something through dry lips.
“Come on. Wake up!”
I was startled awake by someone’s hand slamming on the table, right next to my head. I rubbed my eyes, as my vision became less and less blurry, I saw her.
It’s her. She’s real. The girl from my dreams. She looks like a cartoonist visage of myself. Long hair the same color as mine, leather jacket with spikes, a sick look on her face.
“So you're me. You look really fickle. It’s almost embarrassing that we’re supposed to be the same person.” She remarked with a scoff.
I was silent. I think I was still trying to decide if I was asleep or not. She continued, “well, we can’t have you around for too long. I might break this whole world or something.”
“What?” I asked, barely able to conjure up a sentence.
“I’m going to rip out your spine now.”
She disappeared from in front of me, and reappeared behind me in a flash. She snapped the wooden leg from the stool I sat upon and I fell to the ground, still in a stupor. The bartender let out a shout, but seemed threatened by the girl’s overall demeanor. I tried to stand up, my eyes facing the wooden boards upon the floor.
I heard a sudden shattering of bones and blood came streaking across the wooden floor. No doubt this was the bartender. Now I was awake, and my life began to flash before my eyes.
I didn’t even have a chance to scream before she drilled her foot into the back of my head and forced her hand into the nape of my neck. Ripping my spine from my body just as she promised. Tendons popped, and all feeling in my body was ripped away. It only hurt for a second. This wasn’t a dream. She made sure I knew that.
I fell asleep in a puddle of my own blood, as my vision faded, I saw the girl’s legs making her move towards the door. I raised my hand, as if I could reach her, without warning, my body collapsed into nothing.

Hi! Just here to leave a quick review.

I read your most recent chapter and quite liked it so I'm coming back to the beginning. I haven't read a sci-fi work on this site in a while so I'm excited to get myself invested in a story. Anyway, let's get to it.
First impressions
As far as opening chapters go, this one is pretty captivating. I really like Alice and her comedic timing. Even though the chapter started off slow and I began to question where this was all heading, it escalated quickly towards the end leaving me on a nice cliffhanger for the next chapter. I do think the pace could've picked up a little sooner though.
Positives
I really like your descriptions in this chapter. They feel very real and are quite unique. I especially liked how you described Alice associating work with a prison. I never thought of describing cubicles as jail cells before but it really does drive home that Alice is not satisfied with her current job.
I'm really interested in these dreams now that she has met the character from them at the end of the chapter. My initial guess was time travel? Maybe alternate realities? That would explain the likeness and her look-alike's comment about her existence 'breaking the world'. You've set up a catchy thread to follow through to the next chapter.
Place to improve
The confession to Redman about her dreams seems a little forced. I feel like she wouldn't be that explicit and open about it if it frightened her, especially with her boss? I think that confession would probably be less jarring if it were Jon instead of Redman since there's an established bond there.
While I do believe it's science-FICTION for a reason, and I try to stop myself from rationalising too much in a story, I can't get my head around the fact that Alice was able to move let alone be conscious or alive after having her spine ripped out? If this type of enhancement is part of the world, I think hinting at it earlier on in the chapter would make this bit a little less jarring. It kind of broke my immersion when I read it.
Closing remarks
Overall, a good first chapter with a good MC introduction. A few tweaks here and there to the grammar but I can overlook those things because it's a draft after all. I look forward to reading the next one

Hello, whats this, a new sci fi novel? Sitting all lonely in the green room on Valentines Day? Here on behalf on the Red Roses am I to remedy that. I've never read your work before, so just to introduce my review, I tend to read through and comment on quotes in a linear manner, then at the end I compile some overall thoughts in no particular order.
I both like and dislike this intro. It's atmospheric to a degree. Im a suckered for a late night setting. However, the sentences are all very similar length and read a bit boring. What things and what people? Real people they know? Unnatural looking people? It's hard to know what to do with that.
We also see that they cant sleep and are pulling an all-nighter, then say it's the dead of night. That felt redundant to me. Perhaps moving dead of night at the beginning would be stronger? "Its the dead of night and I wont sleep. I keep having these nightmares and so I preoccupied myself with with some accounting records on the porch of an inherited house owned by my friend Jon." This is just an example, but I think something like that is more.engaging.
Sorry, what now? You look like who? The previous sentence is describing the city but that makes no sense so im assuming someone from the nightmares, but even then we hadn't established an individual from them. If this is woman from the dreams, this deacription is a lot more gripping than "these things and these people". Now we have a face, literally, to attach the fear to.
This feels a little bit gamer talky to me. Its not wrong, but doesn't feel quite like prose in my opinion. Then again, this is sci fi, so maybe it fits the vibe.
Ah, timeout. We juat jumped into past tense all of a sudden and it keeps going on for a while from the looks of it. It was fine to use when talking about meeting Jon in the past, but it should've popped back to first.
Okay, got a couple thoughts here. From the first paragraph it sounded like they were just staying at Jon's for that night because of nightmares. I guess that's not true?
As foe the dream, this is the stuff we should be getting at the beginning. Also, you mention earlier the dreams are sometimes first person and sometimes 3rd, but here its confusing if they are present in the dream at all. If they arent, then how are they seeing the dream in first person? Is it through the eyes of the gunman? If they ARE, then im not sure why being alone in the desert with a man with a gun *wouldnt* be conventionally scary. Especially considering they get torn apart every time.
Overall thoughts:
The entire conversation with Mr. Redman felt bizarre. You tell us very on-the-nose just how dangerous and powerful he is, then he speaks and acts in a totally kind and calm manner, and im wondering why any of ir happened like that? Why is she scared of a man who speaks in a "fatherly" voice and gives her money and time off?
I dont think its possible to raise your arm when your spine has been ripped out of your back.
Was this girl in her dreams then? If so, why wasnt she mentioned when the gunman was?
You go between tenses a LOT, even within the bar scenes and work scene. That's one thing that really trips up a reader and makes it hard to know when we actually are talking about things from the past.
I did laugh when she said she should go to therapy so she went to the bar. A bit of dark humor never hurt anybody.....right? xD

Hello there, human! I'm reviewing using the YWS S'more Method today!
Shalt we commence with the wretched S’more?
Top Graham Cracker - Alice is sleep deprived. So sleep deprived that she can’t function properly at her job. She keeps having the same nightmares and these nightmares unfortunately come true when another version of her comes to kill her…
Slightly Burnt Marshmallow - I have no recommendations to make as of right now, but if you would like to edit this, then you may.
Chocolate Bar - I love how you described the Other Alice, she feels very intimidating and incomprehensible. I feel sorry for this Alice, I totally get why she would not be able to sleep. I also get why she’d go to the bar instead of sleep therapy, even though that’s not the best choice. But her personality feels very real.
Closing Graham Cracker - Overall, a suspenseful and surreal first chapter! I will be sure to read the rest of the chapters of your world and goodness, I hope that Alice is okay! I’m not sure she will be, though…
I wish you an amazing day/night! ^v^
Hia!
I remember your story being mentioned in the awards for 2025 so I always wanted to check out your writing. What better moment than this one then? =D And hey, if I like it, I have even more reason to read the one you finished (I assume it’s finished, have not yet checked!)
Also this is a very exciting moment for me because this will be my 500th official Green Room review! So let’s finally head in! [I’m already happy to be reading another Sci-Fi story :3]
And we’re having multiple dimensions. Excellent news!
…and uhm let’s just say the MC is already very relatable. I should be going to sleep. Soon. But first, more reviewing!
Ok I really love this phrasing: “Numbers float like ghouls in my mind as the dreams creep up my spine.”
Hmmm there needs to be a comma after occasional: “the occasional pained screams”
You might also want to think abt changing the phrasing of “keep me away” and “keep getting more and more real” to avoid the repetition 😊
I think she’s dreaming abt herself in other dimensions, right? Still I feel like this sentence comes out of the blue: “I even look like her”
Maybe some… some indication that we are talking about the dream? I know you mention the dreams in the previous paragraph but I feel like the connection is not quite so obvious.
I am kinda getting the same vibes as the Jet Li movie here and I like that! I wonder if it means something if you see your other selves and if meeting/destroying them might have consequences on the remaining ones? I do like our MCs reaction to the “dream” self. Very understandable.
Hm I think with these two lines you might be overplaying it:
Because I feel like… firstly, you’ve been describing them as “dreams” so I expected her to have the same “characters” in the dreams just different scenes and now you say she is having “this same dream”? Is it a specific one where she can’t protect anything? Then… it feels like it should be given even more weight than it does here. Or you need to set this up differently, earlier already, that it’s not really “Dreams” more like “the same dream, over and over from different perspectives” etc
Now I kinda wonder if she’s seeing the same thing because it is a similar thing happening to different versions of herself…. Okay, enough speculation, more reading instead!
These sentences here are very strong, very good, very fitting, I am with you so far: But the rest of the paragraph uses basically the same structure and retroactively makes even these good sentences very repetitive ☹ This is a strong contender for my least favourite paragraph in this chapter xd
Okidoki from the writing style alone (which is fantastic bar the aforementioned paragraph so far), I didn’t expect to head into dialogue formatting now but since it is my favourite topic, you shall receive the grammar tips. Behold this sentence:
There are no speech tags here which is why you do not use a comma. Instead, you need a period here and you need to capitalize “Did” to show that the dialogue is actually its own sentence. 😊
More great phrasings, I am in awe 😊
Until this: “They feel real, like some sort of out-of-body experience.” Because this is the millionth time that she says the dreams feel real so it is getting repetitive. Maybe any different phrasing could help?
Shouldn’t it be “were open” here? “Hundreds of tabs are opened”
“I glance and think of deleting them, but I don’t have the energy to go through the hassle.” Very relatable.
“My eyes were starting to slip.” Just so I envision this correctly: does this mean she’s going cross-eyed and losing control of where her eyes are looking? 😊
Aww what a nice detail. And she’s lucky it’s only “e”s xddd “My computer screen was composed of a repeating row of e’s”
Oha our MC is called “White” and now we have a “Redman”. See my brain at 23:08 notices the patterns!
“Words poured from my mouth.” Oh poor girl. It’s to be expected, being sleep-deprived, but to have that in front of your boss? And also someone so powerful? (He is bound to be shady then. Maybe someone who knows abt other dimensions and might become suspicious…)
(Oh maybe he is CAUSING the nightmares, using his employees as test subjects for… some purpose that my own sleep-deprived brain cannot fathom as of yet. The reading time says 10 minutes, I am at almost 35 minutes!)
Wait wait wait, he is offering her money for this? Why am I hearing even more alarm bells now??
“Continuously reassuring me that I wasn’t getting fired.” Lol I guess she is VERY easy to read (and also an unreliable narrator atm, I wouldn’t put it past her to be babbling abt being fired every few seconds)
Excellent comedic timing, I love it:
Remember that if you phrase it like this: “The voice snapped.” Then it means the voice said the sentence and then snaps. If you want snap to be a speech tag, you can’t capitalize “the” of “the voice” here 😊 Trust me, I know my dialogue formatting. If it’s the only thing I know then it is this xd
Heeya finally, we are getting somewhere! Hello Other Alice! And now I am even more worried that she told her boss. Because maybe that she dreamt abt Other Alice means that Other Alice is abt to visit and now this boss guy knows abt this and why am I so suspicious of boss guy??
“well, we can’t have you around for too long. I might break this whole world or something.” Hmm I have questions. Firstly: Is Other Alice going to take Our Alice’s place? Potentially by forcefully removing her? Or forcing her to take over her life in the other dimension? (I don’t think murder, otherwise why even have the conversation) and secondly: is the breaking of the world related to two of the same person staying too long in the same dimension or will she actively work on breaking the world? Both scenarios are intriguing but I think the later will be the most exciting and I cant wait to find out what it will be =D
“I’m going to rip out your spine now.” Nevermind it’s murder time. Sadness.
Ok I know Our Alice (who is probably not going to be Our Alice for much longer) is very sluggish and so it makes sense that the narration reflects this… But I still feel like that even a sleep-deprived action scene works better with active phrasings. So maybe you want to get rid of the passive voice here? “but seemed threatened by the girl’s overall demeanor.“
Oh my what an end to the chapter! I am really intrigued now and I have this v small hope that the narrator somehow survives this against all odds. But I suppose we will have a different narrator for the next chapter instead.
I love your character work and how you really made me feel for Alice here. Our Alice that is. She feels very relatable and, well, real. I also liked her interactions with the other characters. I just also love your writing style (mostly. I already mentioned my grievances. That sometimes you could really go for more variety in your sentence structure ^^)
Overall just a very solid start. I will definitely continue reading this.
But not today. Today I need to post in the KotG forum and then I shall do what Alice can’t: sleep. (Or maybe she can now finally sleep forever? oô Or, last theory I swear: Maybe she can body snatch yet another version of herself? Ok this is it I am done, have a great day/night/anythingInBetween)
Join the fight! Write more reviews!
Thank you so much for a long and detailed review! This is an odd story for me because it is the first I wrote in the series, but the last I am dropping on YWS (for now lol). The series of stories consists of Shattered Gravity, Plague of the Desert, Neverending Tempest, The Council of Terra, and The Myth of Artemis (though this is tangentially connected). All my other stories might relate, but the direct series are these and I would consider them a first "arc" of sorts in my larger verse. Our Perfect Worlds was the first and has experienced editing here and there, so writing style/clarity might vary. I am mainly posting these to see how my style has changed.
)
To answer some questions: The breaking of the world would be related to the same person staying too long. There's more to it tho lol and I'll leave that up to discovery. I am happy to see so many theories here anyway!
Thank you for all the critiques on writing/sentence structure. That is something I've been trying to work on! I'm glad you like my characters and writing structure as well (I love my characters too so seeing someone taking kindly to them makes my day
Have a good day/night and get some sleep!!
