Author note: This is an extended metaphor.
Dark walls encased me in a prison of no apparent escape. I had been in this god forsaken box for a time uncountable I knew not of how long I was here - not even a single strand of sun entered the trap to give one a sense of day and night (all I had was a single flickering overhead lamp to show me the room). I was sure of no way out; me being me, I had scouted the entire place as if I was on some sort of treasure trail... but that just pushed the disappointment deeper into my mind. I could just feel insanity seeping into my very soul, one day I would run out of the little water I had left sitting in a shrinking collection of bottles in the corner of the room.
That, however unfortunate, was not the worst of it. I know my captors must have done something to my brain as only snippits of faceless memories clung within my weak mind-other than that all I had to occupy me was the unfinished phrase that lay chipped on my wall 'no escape'-there was no way out and I knew it...
...unless...
It was only just now that the realisation had sunk into my mind- the chips on the words are a lot straighter than what you would picture them to be: as if there was something that the writer could have missed. Something dawned on me. If there was no escape how could there be writing on the wall? ... and how would I have been put in here? Unless they built the box around me, which was the chance I was prepared to take, there would have been an entrance. Slowly, I stepped up to the wall and ran my finger across the crack to find that it continued past the the letters. After scanning the shape once more, I started to push on the wall. A click chimed before a door started to open up-as soon as it was wide enough to fit through I ran out of the box.
I was too relieved that I didn't even consider the idea that the people who trapped me left it unlocked... I was so irrational! What greeted me though the so called way out left me melted in my shoes. It was another room, just like the one I was just in but instead of dark walls there were white walls so bright it was blinding. A strong smell of iron swept up my nose as I caught eye of a different message to the right of me.
There, dripping with a red substance, was two words that made my heart stop.
"Nice try."

.....Yep you did it. Lol I am now officially scared of the creativity of your mind. I mean when I read the ending it really did bring tears to my eyes. Even though you scared me half to death I will admit this was a good and well written story. Everything went together perfectly and the flow was nice. Honestly you should consider starting up your own Horror/Novel collection and try to sell them.....no lie you are truly that good.
Thank you so much! I the nk it would be really fun to do that! Thanks again and again for that review!!!
Oh my gosh, that ending was so creepy! O.o
)
This story was pretty well written. You had nice descriptions and I loved the surprise ending. The way the narrator finally found an escape that was almost too good to be true and seemed like such a coincidence but in actuality it wasn't an escape and just led to another room. And really especially creepy how the "nice try" was written in blood....
Really good story, keep up the great work!
Thank you!
Heya goldypopo, I saw this in the green room and I promised you to receive it. *pings godly with a notif about this review*
I will promise and try to keep an open mind here,as you suggested me to.
Anyways,let's get started,shall we?
~About your title, I think that since you chose it, you actually have to stay very consistent with it, and make it pretty apparent in every story of this series that you write. I don't necessarily agree with what this means and represents, but I respect your time into thinking of this up.
~This is a very quick story,at least it feels like it and it's very fast-paced because of that. I think that you need to slow down a bit and add more:
emotions, actions,thoughts,instinct,description,imagery,etc.
What I mean is that first he's in the cell for all these years, for such a long time and then he finds a door and opens the door, only to find a warning/threatening message. It's just all too much for my brain to wrap around,so I actually had to read this a couple of time to understand what was happening.
~Word choice with your adjectives here. For me, dark and silky portray opposite/different things. Dark is like evil and black and bad, but silky is soft, calm, and warm. So this is really contradicting themselves here.
~I am not a fan of having two adjectives describe one noun, in this case it's a very simple object: a wall-which all of us have seen and know what it looks like. I would recommend that you keep the "dark" and remove the "silky" part of that sentence.
~I always encourage writers to have more specific nouns, because it paints a clearer picture. So here, instead of prison, I think that you should just write "cell" because I think of a prison as a whole big building where criminals are kept. A cell is a box of walls with bars,or in this case,no bars.
~You can always count time, and it would make a clearer image for the reader. A lot of people lost track of time, but that isn't helpful, because a sense of time for the reader is pretty important in this case. It gives us a time frame.
~One suggestion is that, like a lot of other inmates, the prisoner someone does tally-marks or even scratches on the wall for every day that they are there. Something to count and keep a record by.
~I found it very unusual that the character suddenly just found a door in the cell. I think that it's logic that there obviously had to be an entrance/exit somewhere. The way that you found it though, was very quick and made them seem dumb that they have never saw this before.
~How does the MC feel when they get out of the cell, and actually breathe and take their first step out of it? What emotions/thoughts are running through his head? I want to feel this breakthrough along with them.
~All of the ellipsis used in here, are unneeded because they aren't doing any of the functions of an ellipsis. I'm not really all that good at explaining things like this, so I will link you to an awesome website, which has helped me in my own use of them.
~What was the reaction of the MC when the wall actually started to open? Plus, as a more practical question, how did they have the strength to do this, if they only lived on and drank water. This doesn't make sense, there is a puzzle piece missing from the big picture. I know that you probably want to make it apparently seem that they are thirsty and malnourished, but this is just a big hole in your text.
~Okay, now you specifically asked me to comment of the ending. I agree that you were building up to the moment, and I know that there will be a second story/part. So this is how a basic plot diagram should look like:
Spoiler
~In your story, I feel like we didn't really have an falling action and resolution, maybe because this could be a possible continuing story. I still felt, like we were almost just at the climax and then a sentence or two after that, and then BAM,done.
~You need to really strengthen your resolution and falling action, even though there might not be one directly here. The ending is abrupt, because it's a cliffhanger that doesn't give us any information, and makes us want to know more questions. Tbh, your ending is very cliche. It's unoriginal, because I have seen many endings end with a note of sorts,or writing. And that,in fact is pretty boring. We, as writers, don't want to be writing notes here, we want to be writing stories
~So as a suggestion, think about how you should wrap up or finish this first section. Maybe try to experiment with a couple of ending ideas, until you are perfectly satisfied with the one that you chose.I honestly don't know what's going to happen next, but maybe you could continue a bit and write this story futher(making it a bit longer) so that the ending could be more well-rounded. Look to the future
Anyways, that's it from me for today. I hope that this review helped you improve your writing, and if you have any questions, then please PM me or reply below.
~Peace Out~

Thanks for the review! (I would like to see at least one compliment or comment on your thoughts of the story since just throwing me critiques doesn't actually tell me anything of your interpretation. I appreciate the critiques but only really saying one phrase which sounds as if it was sarcastically placed in my favour is not going to motivate me. I know that this is silly that I am critiquing such a good review-but it is very important that even one line can be good enough to let them know that there is potential and not just a heap of mistakes.)
I looked at the counting off the days with tally marks. There are 3 things wrong with that: the MC has no idea when each day passes so how could they mark it off, the idea is more cliche than my ending and the MC has nothing to do it with.
This whole story has an air of suspense and mystery that you added to it, and well, may I say.
Thanks ^-^
Hi, Terian here to review your work!
To start off with I'd just like to ask about the title. This appears to be a short story, but it says '1'. In the title. Is this a part to a short story? Or is it just a short story in itself? If it's a part I'd just re-classify it as a Novel/Chapter.
But is it's just one short story then write more to this! Because its really got me hooked now. Your language really made me want to read onwards! I also enjoyed how you used description to describe the characters train of thought. Stuff like 'as if I were on some sort of treasure trail,' I enjoyed.
However, there were a few nitpicks. When you use ellipses (.....), don't make the next word capital. For example you put 'That just pushed the disappointment deeper into my mind...'
'That...' doesn't need a capital, and also at '....Unless...". Also revise your spelling a bit, because you spelt 'another' in the fifth paragraph as 'anouther'!
There were a few other things I noticed. In the first paragraph you said, that there wasn't a single strand of sun entering the box. If this is so then how can the character see the message on the wall?
As well as this try to describe the second room a bit more. After all if the character has just entered somewhere else after being trapped for so long, then the first thing that would hit him/her would be what the room looked like!
Overall I really enjoyed this! It has lots of potential! Always keep writing!
Thanks for the advice! The one is because I am doing a series of short stories called: no such thing
