Ahh, when I saw that this was a piece based off of "The Highwayman" I just HAD to read it. I absolutely HATE poems and I love this one... maybe its because I first heard the song, but ever since I heard it, I've absolutely loved it.
Anyhoo...
Enough babbling.
I really liked the name you came up for the highwayman, since he wasn't named in the poem. Adam fits, most definitely. I'm glad you kept Tom in it-- he was taken out in the song, which made me very unhappy. So I'm glad you kept him in.
What was also great was how they came back as ghosts in the end--the song also kept that out, unfortunately.
I think you captured it perfectly, how a modern Highwayman tale might go, so kudos for that, very beautiful. =D
I think I saw a couple grammtical errors and maybe a few spelling mistakes, but I'm not sure. I was so enwrapped in the story.
Good job once again!

This is great!
everything is perfect!
Please, please, write something else like it or I'll die. Just do what questions said and you'll be all good.
that's all i have to say.
Ahem, and happy writing.
Wow. This is an action packed story, most definitely.
For starters, I thought you could've put more information into the story. Who was Tom? I didn't really get that. And also, why did the Southern and Northern gangs have so much rivalry and hate for each other? That would've made it easier to understand that ''forbidden'' love that Adam and Bess had.
In many points of the story, you seem to have Tom asking, what is happening? Why is that happening? Is that him? What are they doing? It almost got irritating to read so many questions. From my opinion, it would be better if you showed Tom's irritation/annoyance with Adam, or his confusion by describing his emotions, or his actions. That would also further develop his character.
Overall, though, this was a really enjoyable read! If you wanted to, you could totally have stretched this whole plot into a larger amount of chapters. With more detail in between the cracks, this short story could've been a longer one! I liked it, and if something happens after this, I'd definitely be a reader.
I know this is sort of random, but I also liked the names you used for your characters. They weren't common and unique, the ones that we read in stories everyday. I liked it!
=] Kudos, and happy writing!
