________________________________________________________________________________
Parker
The entire house smelled like salmon and lime. The old armchair I was sitting on smelled like salmon and lime. Granted, I also had my face buried in my arm with the plate of what was salmon and lime sitting right next to my head, so it probably wasn't actually the chair, but still. It smelled.
Like fish.
At least I'd choked it all back.
"Parker?" It was a squeaky little four-year-old voice, riddled with concern and trying to speak around a mouthful of food.
"Yeah Koby?" I asked, not lifting my head. If I lifted my head, I was positive that everything I'd just swallowed would come right back up again. I wasn't going to mess this up tonight.
I listened to his fork make contact with his plate, listened to him pad over until he was close enough that I could pick up that little-kid-soapy smell wafting off of him. I focused on that instead of the fish.
"Do you feel yucky?" He wiggled a hand between my arm and my forehead as he asked it, presumably checking for a fever. We'd taught him well.
I decided that it was a good idea to smile at him. So I lifted my head, clenching my jaw for a second against a sharper wave of nausea. "A little bit, I guess." I ruffled his hair with one hand, combing a few knots out of the curls with my fingertips. "I"ll be fine," I assured him.
"Oh." He paused, lifting my hand off of his head when he thought I'd fussed over it enough, and held a finger in each of his hands. "I can take your plate. And get you more water in your cup."
I watched him for a second before pulling my fingers out of his hand to give his nose a gentle pinch that, for whatever reason, made him giggle. "Okay," I murmured. "Thanks, Kobes."
He took my plate and my glass, scrambled to get his off of the floor- laminate, thank God, because he'd gotten food all over it- and scrambled to the kitchen while I stayed where I was and winced every time it looked like he was going to trip and drop everything. You couldn't see the kitchen from the living room- a hallway ran between the two- but I could hear a chair being scraped across the floor and the sink being turned on. I pushed myself up on my chair when he trotted back in with a full glass of water in his hand and a dorky smile on his face.
"Thanks," I said softly, taking the glass before he had a chance to spill or drop it, and patted my lap for him to climb up.
He snatched the remote off the floor and clambered on, wiggling around until he was leaning against my chest just right, using both hands to adjust my arm around his shoulder. He was a snuggly little kid, and I couldn't say that I minded. The extra affection was kind of uplifting.
I set my glass down on the end table beside me, making sure that I'd put it on the coaster and not the stupid, crocheted tablecloth that my aunty liked so much, and let Koby hand me the remote. I switched it to something kid-friendly and took a sip of water, and then another one, and tried to focus on something that wasn't setting Koby down and excusing myself to use the bathroom. Like his breathing. The squabbling and annoying music coming from the television set, mixed with Koby's giggles and little squirmy movements. His little squirmy movements, but not the fact that they were causing his elbows to jab me in the gut.
I probably shouldn't have had him on my knee. Just in case.
The drone of the television wore on, and I took to staring at the curtains. There was nothing spectacular about them, but grey was strongly preferred to dancing colours and spinning camera shots. At some point in my absentminded musings, the door swung open and a cheerful, How're my boys?" rang out.
Koby scrambled to sit upright, but he didn't climb down, and my eyes snapped open. "Parker made fish!" was the first thing out of his mouth as aunty swung the door shut behind her.
"Ooh, I can smell that," she said, shaking off her jacket. She looked at herself in the mirror hanging on the wall in the entry and gave her hair a ruffle with one hand. Not that she needed it. She was at least forty-three, and every strand of red was exactly the same shade it'd been when she was a kid, still full of volume, and still looked good at shoulder-length. Honestly, she looked young enough to be my sister.
"Did Parker eat any?" she asked, kicking off her boots and turning to raise her eyebrows at me. It wasn't patronizing, really, just inquisitive.
I gave her a lazy thumbs up, eyes drifting from her to the bags she'd dropped coming in. "Whatcha buy?" I asked, half for the sake of a subject change, and half because I was genuinely curious. One of the bags was from a little local shoe store, and one was from a kid's clothing store down the street from it, but I didn't recognize the third.
She scooped them up and sauntered- because Aunty Leanne never merely walked anywhere- and set all three on the coffee table. "They had a sale on at Below the Holster, and I've been in love with these boots for months. Couldn't justify buying them until today." She dug them out- a pair of burgundy leather boots with a reasonably sized heel and stitching on either side of the zippers. The kind of footwear that incredibly unique in a way that you couldn't quite place your finger on, because they basically looked the same as every other pair of boots in the world, but there was an unmistakable air of ooh-la-la about them nonetheless.
"Those are nice," I said, perking up substantially.
She beamed, lifting them for closer examination. "Aren't they? Seventy-five percent off. Oh!" She set them down, fumbling in the kid's bag. "I got these for Koby."
"For me?" It was Koby's turn to perk up, and this time, he did push my arm out of the way to scramble over to where aunty was standing.
"Mmhm. It's a knit sweater."
Koby's smile fell instantaneously. "A sweater?"
Aunty looked down at him, and he looked up at aunty, who pulled out a navy sweater set with a dress shirt tucked neatly into it. "You need something to wear to Brazil's party, I thought."
"Oh yeah." He was smiling again, like the reason justified the fact that it wasn't the toy dinosaur from Toys'R'Us that he made swoony eyes at every time we passed it. "Then I think a sweater's okay."
I pushed myself up while she knelt and held the sweater up to Koby's torso, lifting his arms, tapping his chin so he'd tip it up, and picked up one of the boots for closer examination. And no, it didn't matter how long I looked at it or how hard I stared at the floral embroidery running the full length of the zipper, I could not for the life of me figure out what was that special about them. Only that they were, indeed, very special boots. I set it back down and narrowed my eyes at the third bag.
"What's in that one? Don't recognize the logo." It was a swirly, bright blue letter K with a pair of equally bright blue, puckered lips underneath it. Definitely not one that I'd seen before. And, I mean, if I'd ever seen a logo with bright blue, puckered lips, I'd definitely remember it.
Aunty Leanne pushed herself up, resting the clothes on the coffee table, and nodded at it. If she thought that I'd missed the sly curl of her lips, she was sorely mistaken. "That, I got for you."
I looked back down at the bag, gaze slowly, slowly drifting back towards her. "You did?"
She nodded, picking it up for me when I made no move to do so myself, and held it out with a single finger hooked through the handle. "I did."
I took it warily, eyes widening when I saw what was in it. There were two eyeliner pencils- one black, one marked 'steely grey'- and two small jars of liquid liner, both a different shade of purple, complete with application brushes of varying sizes. I blinked a few times and took those out to get at what was underneath, heart squeezing, a lump forming in my throat. A pale shade of tinted chapstick and a tube of mascara were nestled in the bottom, and I think that I pulled them out and stared at them for a full five seconds before any of us said anything.
"Why'd you buy Parker makeup?" Koby was asking of course, ever the inquisitive child.
"Because," was Aunty's firm reply. She ruffled his hair. "Nothing wrong with a man who likes to add personal touches to his own face."
"Oh."
Honestly, I didn't know how he hadn't noticed the eyeliner I'd been trotting around in all week, but I was too... stunned, I suppose, to add onto the explanation. I blinked myself out of the stupor, and then blinked back an unexpected wall of tears, and whispered a hoarse, "Thanks, aunty Leanne."
"Anytime, kiddo. Got purple because it'll make your eyes pop."
I nodded, gathering it all back into my hands, and glanced sheepishly at the hall. "Mind if I test it out?"
She shook her head, patting my shoulder with a hand with red-tipped nails. "That's what I got it for. Help yourself to my nail polish, should you feel the urge." She started for the kitchen, Koby at her heels, blabbering about the puppy we'd seen in the grocery store parking lot earlier that day. Aunty told him to hold on a second and turned back to me.
"Did you cook enough for three, or should I start rooting through the cupboards now?"
"Made some for you." I usually did, but I'd been slacking this week. Actually, I'd been slacking since I started visiting Braz in the hospital. I'd made supper before leaving every afternoon and took off as soon as Aunty got back from work and ate when I got home. I figured I should probably make up for my sloppiness while she was working the later shifts and I couldn't go much of anywhere. "It's still in the warming drawer, so you shouldn't need to microwave it or anything. Salad's in the fridge."
She nodded, and I swung myself into the hall, and then into the bathroom, because it was closer than my room. And also because that's where she kept the aforementioned nail polish.

I've been such a bad reviewer... The farther I get into my senior year, the less time management I seem to have.
Anyways, hi~
Dang. This is beautiful. All of these characters are so cute, and I loved the interaction between Aunty Leanne and Parker.
I'll admit, I know next to nothing about the LGBT community or what makes people what, but I like Parker the way he is, and I'm not sure how him transgender would affect my opinion of him. :/ I don't know why I added that, but I'm not going to get rid of it.
I'm really struggling to find anything wrong with this piece, unless I bring up setting, but everyone else has too, so that's really unnecessary.
Ridiculously small nitpick that is kind of embarrassing to point out, really, because it shows desperation, but he never closed his eyes.
I've been thinking about it though, and I'd like to see more physical movement of Leanne's toward Parker because body language always says a lot, you know, and it's kinda missing.
I'm grasping at straws if you can tell xP
This is fantastic. I have nothing more to say.
I'll get to the next one soon. I promise :3
Megs~
Duuuude, Parker isn't transanything. Parker's as CIS as it gets. He's just super super flamboyantly gay, is all |: (also if he was transgender I'd just tell you to suck it up buttercup, but xD)
Makeup does not make you transgender. Being transgender makes you transgender.
XP I think a comment in a different review made me think about it xP and made me question the vibes I had gotten so far and then made me question what I thought I knew. I didn't really intend it as a comment on your writing which isn't obvious at all. It's... Me giving a bad spazzy review XD
(What does CIS stand for?)
Hi again!

Sooo, this was awesome, as usual. I'd be shocked if it wasn't.
I know I'm always raving about your character development, but it's seriously impressive. Even the small details you put in give us a good feel of the characters—like mentioning how Aunty Leanne doesn't just walk anywhere. Which isn't to say there's a bunch of unnecessary details or info dumps about the characters, either, but rather details that very subtly tell us about each person.
I love Parker's narration, and Braz's. Honestly, I'm torn on which one I like best. Both are very strong, clear, realistic, and yet very different from each other. All of the characters stand out and are totally unique, and I love that.
I also think it's worth mentioning that Parker's been shown as being feminine and wearing makeup, yet he's not at all a stereotype. He's not flat or cliché or unoriginal; he's one hundred percent realistic and unique. Huge props for that alone.
Everything about this was so flawless, I could go on for ages, but (of course) I have to get on with the nitpicks.
"Scrambled" is repetitive.
The A in "aunty" should be capitalized here.
That's all I have. I found no unnecessary commas, not one. Yay!
I'm seriously digging Leanne, as well. And Koby. Every single character you introduce is so maddeningly awesome that they grab my interest right away.
Well done and keep up the great work!
Here once again~ Yus, more of Parker's past! And yus, we are back to his POV. 8D
Nitpick tiem:
You're missing a quotation mark!
Add in the bolded word~
Okay, so I love Leanne. Anyone who is willing to accept someone despite their differences is good in my book. I also love her because she shares my love for boots and the special shezam they have and how cute they are and omg we could be besties.
I love seeing more and more of Parker! I see he has a love for makeup in general, not just eyeliner. This makes me curious. Is he starting to discover that he doesn't quite feel right as a male and would rather be female? Is he going to be a transgender? If not, then I will still love him, but you'll have to explain his love for makeup, because I've got nothing as to why he would wear makeup if he isn't a transgender.
One thing you should clear up is Koby's relationship to Parker. I assume he is Leanne's son? You never did mention whether he was Parker's cousin, so I'm not sure if he's his cousin or his brother or what.
Also, I agree with Deanie about mentioning more about the house. I'm curious to know what it looks like! I'm also curious to know if his mom and brother live there, and if so, why would Leanne let two druggies near her child? Questions and more questions. I do hope they get answered soon...
Hey there! Here on a sick day from school to review this chapter for you! ;D

First, this seems like a really cool novel you've got going. I can tell that a lot of time an effort went into developing each of the characters and just mapping out the general big picture direction you want to take this in. This chapter did exactly what any really good chapter from a full novel would: It definitely felt like part of a whole while still maintaining it's ability to stand alone. In other words, what's especially cool about this chapter is that it isn't one of those things where you have no idea what's going on because you haven't read the rest. It serves as a good place for new readers to get hooked onto the novel and to want to read the ensuing parts of the story and to explore the previous chapters as well. Like I said, your characters seem to have very well-developed personalities and they each seem to aid you in moving the story forward. So often, "perfect" characters appear in literature where they have their own personality, but really don't fit into any sort of niche in the story or seem to have any sort of inner or external conflicts to deal with. This can become annoying sometimes (especially with novels) because writers sometimes will then try to develop them further later down the line in a last-minute attempt to keep things fresh and interesting or to add a plot twist. It can be done, but not when the characters are flat and underdeveloped. Here, you seem to have a very good grasp on each one of them and although they aren't experiencing major inner conflict (disregarding that of the main character) they still help to move things along without seeming like props, so good job there.
Now then, there were a few things about this chapter that I think you could spruce up a little bit. First, the opening paragraph. I think I understand the mood you are trying to create and the sensory details you want to convey, but in all in honesty, it had me feeling quite lost. Just the syntax of those first few sentences seemed a bit confusing to me. Don't get me wrong, you still succeeded in making the opening paragraph comical and established your narrator's unique narrative voice, but I was left wanting more information about the setting, time, etc. In other words, I think that opening paragraph needs to be more effective in pulling the reader into the story and really immersing them in Parker's world. I get that it's a novel, so most people who would have read this are probably already pretty intimate with the story's major themes, etc., but it certainly couldn't hurt to tighten that intro up a little bit. Like I said, the beauty of this chapter is that it could definitely hold it's own as a one-shot piece, so I think it would only make sense to give it an introduction that could hold it's own as a one-shot intro.
Also, it seems that there are a few syntax lapses in your narration of this chapter. Just the way you describe certain feelings Parker experiences and his reactions to certain situations such as when he receives the beauty supplies from his aunt (who btw is my favorite character in this story; well done!) seems a little bit disjointed and slightly removed from the rest of the general tone and style of the narrative. I'm running out of anything else to really say here, but I hope this helps you moving forward.
This is a really interesting novel you've got going here. Good luck and never stop writing!
Hey there Isha...
The writing seems perfect. The characters are flawless, so realistic that if I didn't know better I'd think they were real. There is nothing to nitpick that I can see. I also really like the character Aunty Leanne... I just wish they'd have that talk where Parker could be completely outright with it and she could accept it ^^ But she's nice, as well as Koby. It was also great to have a change of scenery from the hospital.
You don't know how hard you make it for me to review your work you know
I'm interested in knowing what Parker's house is like? Seeing as some of his family is on drugs, but they seem to be well when it comes to financial stuff and all. I also want to know what his room is like, because usually that brings a lot about their character forwards as well. So, some more setting in there would be nice.
Pacing is flawless as usual... plot? I think we'll be getting into it at enough time. We can already see there are plenty of problems within the family that could do with resolving as well as personal things like Parker's bulimia. And the dialogue is fine ^^
If I'm super picky then the How're my boys is missing a speech mark in front of it, but really that's such a tiny thing D: I'm going on the next chapter. This is wonderful ^^
