Purple Blossoms

PreviousNext

Dr. Rappaccini, a physician and scientist, graduated from the University of Padua, located in Italy. Dr. Rappaccini lived across the street from an old landlady known as Lisbetta. Everyday before he left for work he would see Lisetta attending to her garden, and when he returned, Lisbetta would still be in her garden. Beatrice, Dr. Rappaccini’s daughter, was quite a character. She loved everyone, and was attending a nearby university where she could live at home with her father. Beatrice was studying literature as well as her boyfriend Giovanni. Giovanni always complained to Beatrice about their professor Pietro Baglioni, he was very harsh, and was nitpicky when it came to writing assignments. One day when Beatrice returned home from school, she saw Lisbetta in her garden. She looked as if she was struggling to pull out weeds. Beatrice opened the gate to her garden saying, “need any help?” Lisbetta responding “That would be lovely dear, thank you so much!” “No problem,” Beatrice responded happily. Everyone made up rumors about Lisbetta saying the purple blossoms on her shrub are poisonous and she uses them to poison and kill innocent people. Beatrice of coure, didn’t believe those rumors. Beatrice looked up when she was done pulling the weeds, and Lisbetta was gone. “Lisbetta?” Beatrice called. “In the backyard!” Lisbetta replied. In the backyard was an even bigger garden full of more shrubs with purple blossoms and many other amazing flowers. As Beatrice roamed around the garden happily looking at all the plants and smiling she found a small orange chameleon. “Aww!” Beatrice said giggling at the little chameleon. “Oh, that’s my pet chameleon. Her name is Dizzy, she loves to hang out in the garden.” Lisbetta replied. “She’s so cute!” Beatrice said, while smiling at the chameleon below her. “Why don’t you come inside for a glass of iced tea Beatrice.” Lisbetta finally said. “Okay, that’s sounds really good right about now! Thanks!” Beatrice follows Lisbetta inside. Inside her house there was a long hallway with pictures hanging all over the walls. Once they entered the kitchen, Beatrice noticed a silver vase with a small plant of purple blossoms. “Wow!” Beatrice says “You have a lot of shrubs with purple blossoms” “Oh yeah!” Lisbetta replies “They’re my favorite plants.” Lisbetta lived in an old rooming house. An insect was flying around, and Beatrice couldn’t make out what is was. Beatrice stopped focusing on the insect and went to look where Lisbetta was stand, but she was gone. I wonder where she went. Beatrice thought. Just then Beatrice heard something click as if a door was locking. She went to look, to see if Lisbetta was around, but there was no sign of her. “Lisbetta?” Beatrice said “Where are you?” There was no response. “Thanks for the iced tea,” Beatrice says and then heads for the door. As she walked towards the door, an insect flew past her face. It was big, and scary. At least Beatrice thought so. Beatrice walked faster to the door, and tried to open it. It was locked. Beatrice was trying to get scared. She didn’t know what to do. “Uh… Lisbetta? Are you here?” Beatrice asked, her voice beginning to shake. Beatrice walked back into the kitchen. She looked at the silver vase that was on the table, and noticed all the purple blossoms were gone. That’s weird. Beatrice thought, Why would the purple blossoms all of a sudden be gone. They couldn’t have just disappeared. First Lisbetta, now the flowers. What’s going on here? I don’t want to know, I just need to get out of here. “Um. If you don’t mind Lisbetta I’m just going to let myself out.” Beatrice said. She began for the back door, since the front door was locked. She put her hand on the doorknob and bagan twisting it. “This door is locked too.” Beatrice whispered quietly to herself. Just then Lisbetta came out of nowhere. “Where are you going Beatrice, you never finished your iced tea.” Lisbetta said. Beatrice jumped. “Oh!” She said, “Um.. Yeah, I should probably get going, I have homework to do, and…” She was cut off by Lisbetta. “Nonsense. You can stay for a little longer. I’ll refill your tea, and we can sit and talk.” Lisbetta said with a mysterious grin. Beatrice was a very nice person, and didn’t want to be rude, so she stayed. “Okay, I guess.” Beatrice replied to Lisbetta’s invite. Lisbetta handed Beatrice, her tea glass. The color of the tea was faded and more of a lightish orange than a light brown. “Umm, is this tea supposed to look like this?” Beatrice asked. “Yes, it’s just the sweetner I use for the tea.” Lisbetta replied. “Oh, okay.” Beatrice replied questionably. “How’s the tea.” Lisbetta said sitting down at the table. “It’s really good.” Beatrice said. With that Beatrice passed out on the floor, and was instantly dead. Beatrice called 9-1-1, but there was nothing anyone could do, Beatrice was gone. Lisbetta’s house is under investigation. The police found out that in the tea was poison. Lisbetta was arrested for poisoning Ms. Beatrice Rappaccini.

In the next 48 hours Dr. Rappaccini was arrested. According to the police, Dr. Rappaccini invented the the poison plants that grow in Lisbetta’s yard known as “the shrub with many purple blossoms.” Giovanni, Beatrice’s boyfriend, was shocked to hear that her father invented the weapon she was murdered with. There was a funeral, Giovanni showed up, as did many others, not including Beatrice’s father. No one else seemed to notice this but Giovanni, but on the table beside the pastor was a silver vase with a schurb of purple blossoms in it and next to it, a little orange chameleon.

Hey Im just gonna leave a review here.

Wow this is really good! You kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. There is one thing i did see that was probably something. It is in the last paragraph toward the end.

First you just have a little misspell with shrub and a grammar mistake on the second sentence. But other than that it was a great story and the plot was amazing.

Hey! Don't mind me, I'm just here to pop in for a review!

First off, I liked the plot. It seemed very innocent at first, but quickly evolved into something more sinister. However, there are a few things you could have removed or added in to make it more suspenseful. My main example for that is not mentioning how her flowers were rumored to be poisonous at the very beginning, because it basically tells the reader how the story will end. Also, I feel that Giovanni should have either been mentioned or introduced in the beginning, because it seems like he was a very last minute decision to be added. Another thing, at the end of the story, you mentioned that Beatrice had died, yet in the very next sentence she called the police? That bit confused me just a little.

Another thing I'd like to point out is how the paragraphs are styled. They're very large, but they should be spaced out more to make it easier for the reader to read it. Every time a new character speaks, there should be a new line/paragraph. Here's an example:

"Beatrice opened the gate to her garden. "Need any help?”

“That would be lovely dear, thank you so much!” Lisbetta replied.

“No problem,” Beatrice responded happily. Everyone made up rumors about Lisbetta saying the purple blossoms on her shrub are poisonous and she uses them to poison and kill innocent people. Beatrice, of course, didn’t believe those rumors. Beatrice looked up when she was done pulling the weeds, and Lisbetta was gone. “Lisbetta?” Beatrice called.

“In the backyard!” Lisbetta replied."

There are also a few grammar errors, but I won't go into detail, as it's nothing major.

I enjoyed reading this! I hope to be reading more from you!

Thanks for the review! Glad you liked it!
