Introduction

She betrayed you! After all you went through, she didn’t give you the credit!

Those villains wouldn’t be in jail without you!

You had to do something…now.

Chapter One

What would you do? How would you get back at Midnight Witch for leaving you behind?

“Come to the flames.”

A voice? But who could it be?

Chapter Two

You turned around and found glowing flames on your couch.

Your couch was on fire!

“Your couch isn’t on fire.”

“Yes it is! Look, you see that? Fire!”

“Just come to the flames.”

“Why?”

“You’ll gain power from them.”

“Oh will I?”

“Yes, yes you will.”

Chapter Three

You shrugged, confused as heck, but decided to walk towards the flames nonetheless.

Strangely, you didn’t burn to death. You only felt yourself getting stronger. They gently touched you.

Then you screamed.

Chapter Four

What were you thinking? Step into the flames? Trust an unfamiliar voice?

These weren’t wise choices!

You were now going to die, being swallowed up by greedy flames-

And just like that, you weren’t burning anymore.

Chapter Five

You were instead staring at the bloodied face of a young girl who couldn’t have been more than ten..

“Eva?”

“Yes, it’s me.”

Chapter Six

“Come with me.”

“Can I trust you?”

“Of course. I’m not some strange flames. I’m a ghost.”

“Okay..”

Chapter Seven

You took Eva’s hand and found that you were back in the place where she died. Where the Marina robot was standing right in front of you and Eva, all color faded from her metallic body.

“Marina is alive. You just have to say her name.”

“Eva, she’s a robot.”

“So? She is just like us! Come on, say her name.”

“Marina?” You asked, feeling very much like a helpless protagonist in a horror movie.

Chapter Eight

You waited for a moment and nothing happened. That should be good, right?

Suddenly, the decaying robot’s eyes flash red and she said:

“Why hello there! I’m Marina, your best friend forever! What would you like to do?”

You couldn’t help but be amazed. She seemed so real, so lifelike. The flicker in her eyes, the joy in her voice, it was all human.

“Marina? Say hello to Y/N!” Eva said brightly.

Chapter Nine

Marina waved at you. You waved back.

“This is all so cool, but why are you showing me?” You asked, perplexed at why Eva wanted you around in the first place.

“I just thought that you should meet her.” Eva said with a shrug.

Chapter Ten

“Come with us.” Eva said.

Eva took hold of  your hand. Marina walked out of her stage to join the both of you.

You don’t understand what’s happening, yet you let her lead the way through the silent theater. Before, you thought that Eva was gone, taken in by flames. But with the Candle Man and his henchman imprisoned, Eva could be free to do as she pleased.

She led you further into darkness, Marina clicking, whirring, and buzzing behind you both, as if she were excited and it were an important moment.

You heard other voices getting closer.

You felt a purpose in your heart.

Whatever that was, it was important.

Chapter Eleven

She took you to a movie room. The blank screen was like a pale mirror, the red velvet curtains and chairs inviting you to watch a movie.

But sitting on the seats, you saw a pale, ghostly girl in braids sitting next to…

You clench your teeth.

“Midnight Witch.”

“Hello, Y/N. I believe I owe you an explanation.” Midnight Witch said calmly.

The absolute nerve, the audacity that she had to say that when she gave you no credit whatsoever was certainly monumental.

“Yeah. Fess up, traitor.” You said. Whatever she had to say, it had to be good.

Chapter Twelve

“It’s not safe for you to be involved. It never is. I heard of your powers. I watched from the shadows. I knew you could help, but you’d be in danger if I showed you on T.V. .”

So you had powers? What else would she lie about?

“I’m just a regular person. No special powers.” You said. You thought that she saw something special in you just as who you were, nothing else.

She cocked an eyebrow. What was wrong with her, anyway? Thinking she was all that?

“I can show you if you want.” Midnight Witch said.

It was the best time for you to walk away.

But why not stay? It wasn’t like you had anything else to do.

Chapter Thirteen

Midnight Witch took your right hand. The pale ghost girl in braids took your left one.

“This is Stacy, my  ghost friend. My real name is Mackenzie.”

“Nice names, but can you just get on with it?” You asked. You didn’t come for a meet-and-greet, you came for answers.

“Righto!” Midnight Witch said enthusiastically.

You wished you hadn’t said that, because the next thing you knew, your stomach felt like it was dropping into your knees and everything around you was blurred like a faded watercolor painting…

Chapter Fourteen

You, Midnight Witch-Er, Mackenzie, Stacy, Eva, and Marina had been teleported to a jail cell. The Candle Man  and his sidekick were sitting in the cell together.

“What is this about?” You asked, for how would being in their jail cell solve anything?

Stacy turned to look at you.

“I was engulfed by his flames, that’s how I died. He did the same with Eva.” Stacy said. There was slight fear in her voice, but numbed by years of being dead.

Eva nodded. You still didn’t get it.

“I possessed Marina after my death.” Eva said, the same slight fear in her voice.

“Okay, this is all very interesting, but that still doesn’t explain why Mackenzie betrayed me-“

“Y/N.” A deep voice said.

You stopped cold.

It was the Candle Man. He was talking to you.

Chapter Fifteen

“I see you.”

You and the others were trapped in the flames, fire dancing all around. Though were the only one who should physically be harmed, everyone but Mackenzie screamed in agony. Mackenzie only watched in silent horror as the flames singed her flesh.

“What is going on?! How can he see us?” You asked, heart racing in your chest. Mackenzie put you in danger. She put everyone in danger.

“Look. He’s evil. If I revealed that you helped me, he would hurt you. He would burn you. I had to protect you. I wanted you to help, but I didn’t want you get harmed.”

“Why would you lead me straight to him?!” You asked.

She didn’t look at you.

“So you could see.” Mackenzie said softly.

No. You wouldn’t be burned. You wouldn’t let everyone burn.

You had to stop it.

Somehow, you had to stop it.

Chapter Sixteen

There was a primal rage buried deep inside you. A rage that came from being seen as “weak” and something that needed to be protected.

Not anymore.

You screamed with so much fright and fury that the flames themselves parted. The Candle Man’s henchman had bleeding ears, but the man himself only flickered.

“Wow. You really can scream.” Mackenzie said in awe. Stacy and Eva nodded. Marina smiled. All was right, just like that. Just because you let yourself scream like never before.

Boy, the four of you would make a lovely team..

Chapter Seventeen

The Candle Man, ever so enraged that you even dared to cross him,  had you trapped in bigger, more biting flames. You couldn’t scream, try as you might.  Your voice had died, there was nothing left. You couldn’t do anything. You could only stand  in the fire as it singed your eyes, tore through your flesh.

“Burn.” He seethed.

You hated feeling so powerless, like you couldn’t do a thing. You saved the day before, why couldn’t you do it again? What kind of hero were you?

You heard the slice of a sword. The beep of a robot.

They..they were going to help!

Chapter Eighteen

“Your reign ends here, Candle Man.” Mackenzie said, slicing his flames with her sword.

Marina sent a shock wave which caused his flames to dissolve a little. Eva screamed a classic siren scream, the kind you did, but more ghostly. Stacy danced on his lingering flames, putting them out with her movements.

He was puzzled at what was going on around hi, for usually, his victims ran from him.

Then, like the flame on a birthday candle, he was gone.

“Is he dead? For good?” You asked worriedly.

“Yes, Y/N. He is.” Mackenzie said with certainty

All of you turned to his henchman, cowering on the ground.

“I-I-I’ll spend time in jail. I-I-I’ll pay for my crimes!” He stuttered, his voice a falter and a quiver.

“Did you actually do anything?” Mackenzie asked.

“N-No.” The man said.

“So you just followed him around?” Mackenzie asked.

“Yeah.” The man replied.

“While not doing anything about it is cowardly, you didn’t do the things he did. I won’t forgive you.  I’m not mad at you. I feel nothing for you. Rot in jail for all I care.”

“Oh-my name is Joshua.” The man said, as if it were an afterthought.

“Cool.” Mackenzie said, shrugging.

You smiled at Mackenzie. In the end, she had your best interest at heart. What made it even better was that you had friends. You weren’t alone anymore.

“What I did to you was selfish of me. I should have given you credit for helping me out. No amount of apologies will fix my mistake.” Mackenzie said, guilt in her eyes.

“It’s fine. The past is in the past. You did what you had to do.” You said.

She smiled back at you. Somehow, you felt that it was the first time she ever really smiled in years.

“Let’s get you all home.” Mackenzie said.

You and the others gathered around her, each holding the other’s hand, ready for Mackenzie to teleport everyone back home.

Then you thought about Joshua, with his bleeding ears. Did he even hear the words that was said from Mackenzie or was he deep in his own head, imagining things?

“Joshua, are you deaf?” You asked. You just had to know before you all left.

He rolled his eyes at you, as if you didn’t know a single thing.

“No, I’m not “deaf”. The bleeding ears was just a minor inconvenience.” Joshua scoffed.

It sure didn’t look like a “minor inconvenience” but whatever. Who cared?

You had good friends at your side!

Hello friend!
I saw your work in the Green Room and figured I’d check it out.

Per my interpretation, this was an awesome addition to the story! It built upon the relationship we already knew, but this time gave us a happy ending.

Y/N, Midnight Witch, and a couple others teleport to the Candle Man, when suddenly he lashes out and they have to fight. It's a quick fight, and the girls end up winning, and because of that, there's a wonderful friendship.

This was a fun, short little story!

If I could offer any sort of advice, it would be one small thing when they are fighting the Candle Man. You said,

.Marina sent a shock wave, which caused his flames to dissolve a little.

There's a period at the beginning of the sentence that doesn't need to be there. I assume that was just a simple typo, but fixing that would help with the flow of the story. I kind of stopped there to see where it came from.

But, obviously, this is just a suggestion, and it's always up to the writer, so please take this criticism lightly and know that I mean nothing negative by it—only trying to provide a somewhat useful critique.

If I had to pick my favorite part, there would be a couple! There were some really great things happening here!

The first thing in this story that caught my eye was the description when Y/N asked Midnight Witch for answers before they teleported to a different scene. You said,

You wished you hadn’t said that, because the next thing you knew, your stomach felt like it was dropping into your knees and everything around you was blurred like a faded watercolor painting…

I loved the description, "blurred like a faded watercolor painting." I feel like it's the perfect way to describe what happened to Y/N in that moment and how the world began to look. I mean, that's how I imagine teleporting would look, and you showed it very well, so kudos to you for that!

The other thing that stood out to me quite a lot in this story was the evolution of Y/N and Midnight Witch's relationship.

It started with sheer resentment, the opening line reading,

She betrayed you! After all you went through, she didn’t give you the credit!

But after they defeated the Candle Man, the story comes full circle, and Y/N forgives Midnight Witch for what she's done, the story saying,

You smiled at Mackenzie. In the end, she had your best interests at heart. What made it even better was that you had friends. You weren’t alone anymore.

I loved the way this relationship ended up being a good one. It gave a happy ending to an otherwise terrible situation, and I liked that a lot. The relationship started with resentment and ended with friendship, which is an awesome trope that I love to see, so good job writing that!

Overall, this was a great story with an amazing ending! I really enjoyed what I read and will definitely be coming back for more!

Thank you for taking the time to write and post this, and I hope this review is of some use to you!

Goodbye for now! I hope you have a magnificent day (or night) wherever you are!
