In the 1800s, there was a Prince named Cesare Albrecht who ruled over a Kingdom alongside his mother, Queen Clara Albrecht, both ruling with deep, deep misery. When Prince Cesare was young, his father died and ever since then, he felt a hollowness that ate away inside him, something that never went away with time, something that was never eased with the wealth that no other person but him and his mother could obtain.

So, he and the Queen executed anyone who dared to act foolishly happy in front of them, hoping that they would find joy then, but every single time, they were just as upset as before. Prince Cesare wished all his life that he could find something more, something that would save them both and then, on his twenty-sixth birthday, Queen Clara excitedly ran towards Prince Cesare as he was brushing his hair in his room and cried out:

“Josephine has found a way for us to be happy! We have to invite everyone over for your birthday and she’ll find the souls with the most happy energy to save us!”

Prince Cesare felt a smile creep up on his face. Josephine was their royal and loyal witch, someone who worked to make them both feel better about themselves and the fact that Josephine had found a way to help them meant that things were close to getting better.

…………………………………………………………………………

When the hours had passed late into the night, Prince Cesare lurked in the hidden hallways with his mother as every villager from town was piling in the castle halls. He imagined that neither wanted to come, but there was the threat of execution to them and their loved ones if they refused, so of course, they did.

But as Prince Cesare and Queen Clara waited and waited and waited, nothing happened. Josephine didn’t come up to them with any news, any sign of hope, any-

“Here is the soul of a little girl that I trapped in a doll. She wasn’t too poor, so she still had her innocence. She’ll do well to keep you both happy.” Josephine said, appearing before them holding a doll with her blond hair in pigtails, her white and pink dress shining from the moonlight on the stained glass windows.

Prince Cesare could see that the doll had a hint of light in its pale blue eyes and knew that Josephine had brought them a little girl’s essence, so, both he and Queen Clara reached out to touch and the doll and-

“What is this talk about murdering our daughter?!” A man cried out, coming out of the shadows with a woman besides. By the anger and fear in their eyes, it seemed that they were the little girl’s parents and they somehow found the three of them hiding.

They ran towards Josephine, seeming to not care that the odds of them leaving the palace alive were slim. Honestly, the looks of disgust in their faces was rather repulsive and Prince Cesare couldn’t wait to see them crumble after a few steps.

“If the both of you cared so much about Fleur, then you both must have been very, very happy. Your happiness will help the Albrechts.” Josephine said, extending her hand and tearing Fleur’s parents to shreds with her lovely magic. Prince Cesare wrinkled his nose at the blood, but at least the servants would be made to clean it up.

And like always, Josephine had saved them.

…………………………………………………………………………

Years had passed on where Prince Cesare and Queen Clara had felt joy in their lives that they hadn’t felt in a long time, joy that they took from the energy of the family Josephine killed, but it didn’t take too many of those years for the family’s essence to not be enough, so Prince Cesare had lamented to Queen Clara about their predicament and then, Queen Clara went up to Josephine and Josephine said that she would track down where the family lived with the doll that trapped Fleur, for the doll would lead them to a gold mine of happiness free for the taking.

Queen Clara put her faith in Josephine and after some time, Josephine had come back with the doll and the location of the house. Though both the Albrechts feared their Kingdom going into shambles without anyone left to ruin the peasants, they carved happiness more and without protest, followed Josephine to the family’s old house.

Many more years went on in the family’s old house and strangely enough, Prince Cesare felt as though he were truly a child again, free to be without worrying about ruling over people who may not have had a lot but still had flickers of optimism that wasn’t deserved, free to live without the weight of his father’s death haunting him, free to be as ecstatically foolish without being expected to do anything more. He cared not for the Kingdom nor the people in it, only that he, Queen Clara, and Josephine were as happy as ever.

One night at the house, Prince Cesare decided that he would read in the library. He was still in his princely attire, for he didn’t feel like sleeping and so, as he walked into the library, excited to finally have time to read, he saw a bleeding man and woman floating next to a bookshelf, their eyes narrowed in clear, sword-sharp hate, their claws clenching and unclenching as though anticipating to be used. Prince Cesare could vaguely make out in the hazy moonlight reflecting from the windows that they looked just like Fleur’s parents, before they madly rushed at him, claws extended out, throwing an avalanche of books at him, tearing through his flesh just as Josephine did to them, surrounding him in a storm of anger and noise, making him feel just as violated as they did on the night of their and their daughter’s deaths, for all the time that Queen Clara and Prince Cesare ruled.

Because not even a Prince can escape the damaged, forgotten ghosts of the past.

Ok time to check out the prince’s story.
From all I have read so far, he’s the character with the least… presence. At least to me. So let’s see what his deal is.

…I’m starting to feel that maybe all this family needs is therapy. And maybe medication. What they definitely don’t need is a witch like Josephine, basically exploiting their power.

…What exactly does that mean…?

She wasn’t too poor, so she still had her innocence.

I like that it actually works. That sacrificing the family did cure depression. Who would have guessed!
Did they at least stop executing ppl now that they aren’t unhappy anymore?

Hm now that I read the story, I still don’t think I got a good grasp of who the prince is as a person. I don’t think there’s enough that separates him from his mother. It still felt more like her story than his.

I also… didn’t really get if he died at the hands of Fleur’s parents or not. Or is that the moment when he became a ghost to live in the attic?

I like the last line of the story.

Yes, their ghosts killed him. And that line means that if people are so poor that they don%u2019t see the good in the world then their happiness cannot be used. Such was not the case for the Bianchi family.

Thx for reading!

Review

Hey, creeperfeverdreams! My name is Cheerio, and I'm here to review your wonderful story. It's been a while since I've reviewed, so I might be a little rusty. Let's dive into it!

What I loved about it:

- Everything!
- The plot
-The Characters

Why I loved it:

- The method they chose.
- Josephine is an interesting character, and her loyalty to the royal family intrigues me.
- I feel that there were lots of deeper hidden meanings in this story, almost like a parable. This feels like a story that would be told around a campfire or one that would be passed down from generation to generation.

What could be improved:
- Some sentences were a bit long and wordy, they could've used a bit more tidying up and condensing so that it wouldn't be hard for the reader to follow along.
- A few times I got lost and had to re-read some sentences for it to make sense.

Closing:
Overall it was a great story with a great plot. I loved the way you captured their search for happiness. It makes me wonder if Josephine and Queen Albrecht found the prince. What happens after this? I'm intrigued.

Your fellow writer,
~Cheerio.
