I used to be a tree. A tall, magnificent tree. I was happy. Then the Carpenter came and took his saw to my trunk. I could only think that surely this is how I die. But I did not. The man chopped and cut. Shaped and sanded. Carved and polished. He made me into something new, something beautiful.
I was taken away by another man. They tied me down in the back of a truck. I rattled and shook as we drove further from my creator thinking surely this is how I die. But I did not. I was placed in a bright room and decorated with a blanket and pillow. A young woman sat and rocked with me every day. Until one day she did not come. I sat alone for what felt like an eternity in the darkness. I rejoiced when she returned. This time with a small babe in her arms. They sat and rocked with me each night. I could even soothe that babe when it cried out.
The child grew up and I grew old. The child did not know how to play gently and broke my arm and my back. I lay still and thought surely this is how I die. But I did not. Mother and Father repaired me with a piece of wood that was not my own. I was whole again. I continued to soothe and comfort my family through 6 children, 2 homes, and many repairs. I became a mosaic of our home. My family grew up and I grew creaky. Until one day I was moved into a cool dark room, and I never saw them again.
I collected dust for years. And every day I thought surely my family would return for me. But they did not. When the light returned it was not Father, but a young man. He dusted and cleaned my carvings. He gently touched every one of my repairs and smiled. “You have been well loved, my friend. I know the perfect spot for you.” And I thought surely I will be loved again.

Hello, RandomTalks here with a short review.
This was a beautiful story. On the surface it may feel like the autobiography of a tree as it passes through various phases in it's life, but when you actually get into the story, it is so much more. The feelings and emotions you managed to infuse into such a simple story is amazing. I love how many times throughout the story the rocking chair was sure that it would die. I am sure you did not intend to make it humorous, but it made me smile a lot.
My favourite line was:
"I became a mosaic of our home."
We often forget how long the little less important things in life have kept up with us. We do not acknowledge them when they are there, but the moment they disappear, something feels missing. So we patch them up, fix the broken parts together, desperate to have them where they belong. But in the process, we forget that each scar and each tear becomes another new memory.
This was truly a wonderful story. It was short, it was sweet. And I loved how even though the story ended, the journey of the rocking chair did not. You can feel it getting ready for another new adventure in the very last line.
Good job on this story. it's a compelling and unique narrative, and In my opinion you've written it so that the story never really ends, and in a way retells itself with the fact that the tree never really dies, but gets and always will get remade in some other form. That's a really valuable aspect of any story and not an easy one to do. The story's also really well written, not just in terms of the style but also in the fact that there's no typos/errors etc. Overall it was pretty engaging and interesting story.
Hi, this is Kahlene here.
When I started to read this story I wasn't sure about it... I thought it was going to be about some tree getting cut down. That was until I actually read it, this story captures the light of being loved. I even almost shed a tear when the young man found the rocking chair in the storage (at least that's what I thought the room was). The fear the rocking chair felt well being carved, handed to, and sold was very funny to me, I probably would have peed a little being that chair. I also wanted to mention how you made the story flow, it had great consistencies and it never dragged the reader on. This certainly is a good short story.
I also wanted to let you know that throughout this story it made me smile a lot. This life that the rocking chair lived is truly beautiful, she felt love, she was beloved. You did a great job here! I would love to see future projects from you like this, that make me smile. I hope you have a good day!
(Geez, I sound corny in this..)
Thank you for the kind words. I love corny haha
That's good because I am very corny...
Hi! Welcome to YWS. I hope you have a lovely time here. This was amazing. Through your work you have proved that, " Everything has life of its own." This is a beautiful piece of work and tells how everything is alive and has it's own feeling. There was a constant smile and sense of realization which I got as your story proceeded.
Just like human beings, everything has some feeling and that must be respected and taken care of.The process how chair feels that it's end is almost here. But, It is not is a beautiful way to tell that we must not consider bend of the road as it's end. This was a well- written piece.
Lastly, all the best for your future works and keep writing!
