Rain and Sadness

***

I remember when drops fell on my head from above,

and I looked up to greet them with happiness.

I remember when the water was warm,

and thunder proclaimed its arrival.

I don't remember when the drops became cold,

and I hurried inside to escape them.

***

Rain and sadness don't go together well in my mind.

Rain to me was looking over dripping trees,

and rocking chairs, listening

to nature roar triumphantly,

and hurl lightning across the sky.

***

I looked forward to the rain.

I looked forward to the thunder,

the lightning, and walking down the street

while the rest of the world held its breath.

I looked forward to the smell,

petrichor, after the rain had gone.

I didn't look forward to it ending.

***

Now I look forward to the silence,

when the frigid mist ceases.

***

Rain and sadness go together well

in stories.

In movies.

In poems.

But not in real life.

Hey, Onii-Chan here!

I reviewed drops as well, you seem to enjoy poems about rain! :)
Great poem. I love how this poem is telling how rain can be therapeutic, rather than how most people associate rain with negative feelings. The last stanza is probably my favorite, I don’t know why. Great job on this poem!

Keep on writing!

Radrook here a once again to offer some suggestions.
Apologies if i offend. It isn’t my intention.
Please feel full free to cast aside all things you deem not helpful.
But if you do be sure its true by being extra careful.

That having been said

Thanks for sharing this poem which is based on the personal opinion that rain and sadness only go together well in movies, poems, stories but not in real life. I like this poem and enjoyed the vivid imagery and understand the enthusiasm that the writer is speaking about. .
There are indeed moments when rain is exhilarating and even the sound of the thunder. In fact, the examples provided bring back memories of moments when I ran home in the rain during a thunderstorm. It definitely was not a moment of sadness but provided a feeling of being at one with nature, of being privileged to be engulfed in the whole thunderous event.

But since there are indeed moments in real life when the sky does seem to accompany our grief by shedding tears along with us, such as during a funeral, a burial of a loved one or when one must leave loved ones behind to go to a foreign country, I cannot agree 100% that rain never coincides and reinforces the feelings of sadness during or after a a sad event.

I remember when drops fell on my head, [Reader knows that rain comes from above.]

All in all a very enjoyable read.

Thank you so much for your comments! I will take them to heart :) I wrote this when I was going through a hard time in my life, and really it was almost spiteful in my insistence that rain and sadness don't go together. At the time, it definitely seemed that they coincided, as you said, but in the moment, I felt that the two didn't go together well as the rain and darkened sky only made me feel even more melancholy. So we agree!

Also, I might make a note of this on the poem itself, but the change between my opinion on rain from the first stanza to the following stanzas went along with my family moving from North Carolina to California a number of years ago. Rain in NC usually happens in the summer, where it's warm and the droplets are also warm, and thunder always goes along with it. Quite majestic ;) In California, though, the rain more often comes in the winter, and is just chillingly cold, and instead of the big droplets of NC, the rain only ever seems to come in a sort of mist. (At least where we used to live in California.)
