It’s raining cats, dogs and fairies

‘’Puck! Puck! Where are you?’’ called Oberon.

‘Here, my Master,’’ replied Puck, randomly popping up out of nowhere. Oberon was ordering fairies to pick grapes from bushes. Once he saw Puck was there, he turned to him and beckoned him to walk over to a private spot to talk.

‘’Titania and I are planning a feast for the Athenians. It is nearly midsummer, so we need to celebrate, and we need to remind the Athenians of our alliance. I am supposed to be providing the meat but I am busy sorting out the fruits for the salad. I have heard of a place which is crawling with animals, just waiting to be hunted. Just fly above the Oil Spots a like and dive down onto the golden owl.’’

‘’Yes your majesty.’’

‘’And Puck.’’

‘’Yes?’’

‘’Try not to cause any mischief,’’ and with that, Puck disappeared into the forest fog.

I ran my fingers along the rough pages of my book, placed it on my electric wheelchair and climbed in. It was an early Monday morning at school and I was waiting for my friends to arrive. Today I had brought the book ‘Missing Me’ by Sophie McKenzie to school to read.

I raked my fingers through my messily plaited hair, trying to twirl my plaits, but only succeeding in making one gigantic knot on top of my head. I sighed and started to read to pass the time away, but I couldn’t help glancing up at the clock every five minutes. The taxi driver had dropped me off at school early again so I had to wait ages for my friends to come.

Suddenly, there was a loud bang right next to me. I looked at the floor surprised, but nothing out of the ordinary had happened. I shook my head and started to read again. I looked at my book in disbelief.

‘’Alas! Oil Spots a Like,’’ exclaimed Puck. Puck? Didn’t Sophie McKenzie mean Maddison, the main character?

‘’Since I’m here I might as well have some fun,'’ the whole book carried on like that. There was this mysterious ‘Puck’ character ruining the whole story. He messed up the romantic scenes by farting, put hair removal in Maddison’s shampoo causing her to go bald and the most irritating of all, appeared to nibble the pages of the book! I blinked in amazement, but quickly put the book down when my friends arrived.

The whole day was tragic. Mysterious things were happening everywhere. At first, we all thought it was really funny. In Humanities, the teacher was being wrestled by an invisible figure and he couldn’t write on the board, or speak. We all thought this was typical Mr. Lima , but some children thought it a little peculiar that we didn’t do anything for the whole lesson. I thought it was the crazy ‘Puck’ character from my story, but it couldn’t be. There’s no such thing as magic.

Performing Arts was miserable for everyone. Something was happening to all of our performances that really was peculiar. Individual groups were acting out the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet. All the Romeos had lipstick on their lips and the Juliet’s were smothered in chocolate that didn’t seem to be there before. They all suddenly dived forwards and gave each other a great big kiss! Everyone was shocked and embarrassed. The teacher thought we were pranking each other and was really mad. Luckily my group just missed our turn as the bell rang to mark the end of the unusual lesson.

Finally it was lunch, everybody rushed out of the class, eager to get away from the embarrassment of kissing their classmates.

“What do we have after lunch, Caitlin?’’ I asked.

‘’Science in the Stag build……….‘’ As soon as Caitlin said Stag, my book suddenly started shaking like an earth-quake. I stared at it in horror. What was this ‘Puck’, going to do now? Cause a volcano? All of a sudden, a figure started to rise out of my book. I dropped it in amazement as a brunette head started to rise out of my book. Two pairs of blue eyes started to emerge out of the thin pages. His legs were covered in blue scales, but apart from that, he was completely human.

“Puck?’’ I breathed. Caitlin was stunned into silence.

“Where is the beast? I, Puck Piggle Wiggle, claim the great Stag of Oil Spots a Like!’’

‘’Um… Puck, this is Oir-Oirschotsed… dijk, and there isn’t any sst… stag,’’ I stammered.

“What?! Noooo!!! Why didn’t you say so in the FIRST PLACE!!!’’ screamed Puck. His pale skin turned neon pink, his brown hair neon yellow and his blue eyes pitch black. He raised his arms to the skies and a dark cloud formed above him. A dalmatian dropped out of the sky and landed on Puck’s head. He blinked in surprise. Three followed and then six cats flew down, their paws frantically pawing the air.

“Caitlin, it’s raining cats and dogs, literally!’’ I shouted, above the noise of purring and yelping.

‘’Puck stop it! You’re going to flood the school in fur and paws!’’ screamed Caitlin who was allergic to animal fur.

Puck, completely ignored Caitlin and , cried, ‘’Why? All I needed was just one piece of meat so I can cast my multiplication spell and there’ll be food for everyone! The Master will be so vexed!’’

“ I have an idea!” I exclaimed. My sister and all the MP4s are cutting open pig hearts today, you could take one. I heard they’re very crunchy! Just stop the storm before my friend gets an allergic reaction!’’

“Fine. But it better be tender!’’ And with that, Puck disappeared among the barking bull dogs, along with the whole pack of barking, clawing and meowing animals, just as quickly as he had come.

Oh sis, you make me laugh ;)

This one was so much more creative than mine! I love how you included Puck in the book and made him fight with the teacher invisibly... I can just imagine how weird that would look! Also, making it rain cats and dogs was a brilliant idea, as well as the solution. It would be hilarious if he didn't like the pig heart though, because what other meat would he use?

I am going to keep this short because I'm pretty tired. But I just wanted to say that for all the situations you kept using the word peculiar to describe it. Maybe mix up the vocabulary a little more so it doesn't always sound too samey.

I know this is a short story but there were some things that made me wonder. For a start, why was Puck so surprised as well when it started to rain cats and dogs? Does he have no self control over his power, hm? Does it have limits? Because obviously he doesn't have the power to make meat suddenly appear if he has to go searching for it. Better yet, you could make it so he doesn't even know how far his powers bend himself, hence him being surprised that storm cloud doesn't form but cats and dogs do.

The one situation that included Puck that I didn't like so much was the Romeo and Juliet one. I felt like it was very random, the chocolate suddenly appearing and the teacher just putting it down to them pranking. Where would the students have gotten the chocolate from? Maybe Puck should be more discrete here, tripping up students and making them mess up their lines so it sounds like praise to Puck instead or something. It would be interesting if the same thing happened to the main character and then she can feel the magic working, because although her mouth is moving she never gets to choose what to say... and so on ;)

We never get to know the main characters name! Just Puck's and Caitlin's! So maybe get her mates to say it at some point so then we know. I don't like referring to her simply as main character :)

Anyways, I am off now! I hope this helped :P

Hi there! I'm here to save your work from the Green Room!

So this was cute. That's really the only word for it. It was light, and... well, cute.

I don't know if you kept Puck completely in character the whole time-- he seemed a bit too obvious for that kind of thing. Puck as a character in AMND (or Robin Goodfellow, if we're going to be proper) was much more subtle about his pranking, choosing the prank to speak for itself rather than causing dramatics and being able to be blamed for it.

You need to include more detail in the modern era part. The MC just kind of lies down and takes whatever Puck does. Also, you tell us about what he does, not show us. I want to be in the moment as a reader, not have someone say to me, "Puck did this, Puck did that."

Telling is this:

The teacher thought we were pranking each other and was really mad.

Showing is this: "Mr. Henderson looked around, his building rage emerging in the veins on his prominent forehead. "What is going on here?" He demanded, his face turning a strange shade of purple."
Perhaps that was a little detailed for this story, but do you see what I'm saying? In the second example, you can really feel what's going on, rather than having to be told that the teacher is angry.

Remember to think from your character's perspective, and think about every detail. Think about each of the five senses and include what is most important in that situation.

I hope that this review proves helpful to you. I'm glad that someone is writing fanfiction about something as good as AMND! Have a great day, and keep writing!

Thanks for the review! I definitely understand what you're talking about. I do need to stop making all my stories accounts and start making them more happening. I did have a word limit though, and I was already three hundred words over it, so I was kind of rushing through the scenes, not adding detail. Luckily, nobody noticed my passing over the word limit.

I find this cute & light. I like the portrayal of your characters and the humour that goes with it. It was a fun read.

Keep going :)

Thanks. That was what I was aiming for, glad it was a success.

Okay so hi! I have not read A Midsummer Night's Dream, but I know about faeries and who all of these characters. So I will review regardless of the fanfiction element. xD

A few quick nitpicks:

‘’Science in the Stag build……….‘’

There's no need for so many periods. Ellipses are only three dots.

Puck, completely ignored Caitlin and , cried,

Random comma after "and" is not needed.

“ I have an idea!” I exclaimed. My sister and all the MP4s are cutting open pig hearts today, you could take one.

Quotation mark is needed before "My sister".

I gotta say, I love the way you wrote Puck. You kept him in character and how I would imagine him. He's a total mischief brat, isn't he? <3

I do love that he disobeys Oberon and wreaks havoc on everyone in the mortal world, particularly Caitlyn and her school. It's kinda funny that he chose to target her and followed her around through every class, and then the raining cats and dogs was a nice addition. I liked that a lot, because it's something he would do and would make it so hard to believe because it seems so unreal. xD

Overall, this was really funny and amusing to read. I enjoyed it very much!

Hope that helps~

Thanks for the review, Iggy. I didn't realized I put so many full stops in that sentence. By the way, I love your avatar.
