In When The Rain Falls

PreviousNext

The one thing that gets to me in an awkward situation is the long, awaiting silence that comes after it. Yes, it happens to everyone a lot, and if you are me, you shall be expecting it come every day. It’s not entirely my fault though, some of the fault belongs to the people I’ve seen and met over the years being stupid to me. I swear starting a conversation with the tale of the scary girl that comes out on rainy days is a something. However, it all depends on the person what they do with that piece of information to take in the next situation. Some would just sigh and walk off and pretend they didn’t hear me say that, while others would start a rumour that I’m a mental freak that escaped from the insane asylum.

Indeed, I really don’t like the situation I’m in right now.

The wind from outside brushes against my hair, pushing is to one side of my face. I watch the clouds roll in and begin to be black and full of rage. Thunderous rumbles escape from the sky above and the clouds start to sob. Rain drops patter against the windows and the shadows with the trees is making the situation more unsettling. It’s pretty much a scene from a school horror movie and stuff; you can just never escape these.

All this whatnot going on has me distracted, so when Casey taps me on the shoulder, I jump. She chuckles and whispers, “Ya distracted or somethin’?”

I blink, realizing the principal isn’t at his desk, “Where’s the principle?”

She laughs, “He’s in the other room,” sighing, she lifts her feet up and crosses her legs, “I’ve been in here for, like, two hours now.”

“Really? Why?”

“Ah, he called me and told me he wanted to say somethin’. However, he sure is takin’ him God damn ti-”

“Enough, Casey,” the principles interrupts, setting own in his seat, “I’m sorry to have you both wait so long.”

“Pfft. Yeah,” she sighs, “What did ya call me in here for?”

He glares but continues, “Now, are you both aware that you don’t have any roommates assigned to you yet?” We both nod and answer just a simple yes, ten he points at me, “Alice, this is why I am assigning you with Casey for the year.”

My eyes widen and I shook my head. Are you kidding? Are you kidding me? After all that time he had to assign me with a roommate he puts me with her? I mean, yeah sure she’s really nice and all, but she’s all the same. One week later, she’ll ditch me for the popular people. I groan, this isn’t something that I control over, I understand that. What I can’t understand is the fact that he always, and I mean always, puts me with the weird and wacky people.

Good grief!

I’m not listening to the roommate rules he’s babbling on about because I’ve been here for far too long now. Instead, I’m just watching the weather outside. It’s very gloomy but for some reason it’s also calming, perhaps too calming. I don’t want it to rain though, it’s stupid plus I don’t want to see her.

Unfortunately, as I stare out the window, I see her hair bounce in the wind as she walks. She laughs, placing a hand on the window and grinning. For some unknown reason, she’s saying her name. Well, obviously the principle or Casey can’t hear her, but I could. She repeats ‘Tiffany’ over and over like she is a broken record player repeating the same lyrics. My eyes widen and I gesture violently for her to disappear, however she just taunts me. Why me? Why does everything happen to me? You see, I just want to be considered normal, but with Tiffany around, there’s no guarantee that’ll happen.

“Alice?” The principle asks.

I snap back into reality, rubbing my eyes, “Yes, sir?”

“Just what was with the wild gestures you were making? Is there something you wanted to tell me?”

I stutter, “Oh! Well…I…I…Was…Ugh…”

“Sir, there was a girl out there a minute ago,” Casey states, making me choke a little. She saw Tiffany? Casey sighs, “She was sayin’ her name over and over…Kinda stupid really.”

“Is this true, Alice?” He stands, looking out his window.

“Ugh…Yeah…It is…S..Sir,” I manage. This is all too weird.

“Well, whatever the case may be,” he turns, smiling and handing me a key, “You two will be roommates. Any objections?”

“No, sir,” we both reply.

“Good,” opening the door, he shoves us both out, “Please find your room safety and please don’t cause any trouble, Alice.”

Casey blinks, confused, “What does he mean by tro-”

I place a hand on her back, rushing out of the principal’s office, “Heh heh! He’s just joking! You know, for a laugh!”

She raises an eye brow but chuckles, “Is that so?”

I laugh nervously, walking ahead of her, “Yep!”

“But he was serious, weren’t he?”

“Let’s just go.”

We walk out of the building for now, heading towards the dorms. The rain is still bucketing down like wildfire and the wind is whistling a rough song into my ears. The clouds roll around the sky and sit in the middle, making my clothes more drenched than usual. I dart my eyes to where Casey is and she seems to enjoy the rain, humming a song and spinning in circles like she’s Mary Bow Peep or whatever. Her dye is coming out though, the blue fading into the bright blond hair.

I sneeze, rushing to the dorm building.

There’s this rule about life that makes me want to vomit. The fact that lovers can make out anywhere they want. Now, I’m not saying that is a bad thing, in fact, I find it rather cute. However, when I’m in a rush to get somewhere and they stand right in front of me like statues; it rather makes me sick to the stomach. Both James and Kathryn, two completely random people that I bumped into a couple of times, continue to suck each other. They’re like fish really, gasping for air and giving it to one another by mouth to mouth seems like the only option to them.

I pinch the bridge of my nose, trying to get their attention, “Excuse me, I’ll like to get through…” They continue to eat each other’s faces off, which makes me rather annoyed. I twitch my eye, “Can you please make way so Casey and I could get to our dorm? It’s bad enough I’m sharing it with someone I don’t know, so please move.”

They ignore and that tips me off the edge. I want to punch them, scream at their faces, drown them even but something stops me. Casey places her hand on James’s shoulder, slamming it into the staircase. She hisses, “You seriously need to get a room.”

James scoffs, “Look who’s talking.”

“What is that supposed to mean,” Casey asks, clenching her fist together.

“Oh, nothing…” He goes back to making out with his fish faced girl.

“Hey! Are you deaf or somethin’,” she pushed him out of the way, yanking me up the stair case, “Alice asked if she could get through, ya fuckin’ retard!”

He laughs, “Alice is a freak! No one can be bothered with her!”

“Oh…Pity,” Kathryn smirks, “It’s a shame that we couldn’t hear her, otherwise we would’ve moved.” She flicks her hair, walking past me into the entertainment room with James.

“Oh bullshit,” Casey grabs her wrist, glaring into her soul, “Ya lucky that your dorm is not next to mine. Otherwise I’ll personally guarantee that I shall kill you while you sleep.”

“Yeah right!” She laughs for a few moments, before seeing the serious look in Casey eyes. It’s like Casey is the lion and Kathryn is the weak little animal of the Savona. Her eyes went huge, “Ugh…Eh heh, you are joking…Right?”

She blinks, “Why would I be?” With that, she walks up the stairs and turns a right, leaving two confused yet terrified faces staring at each other.

I follow after Casey with thoughts running through my mind like a speeding bullet. Did she stick up for me or something? It was completely overwhelming yet, somehow, filling me with great joy. On one hand, I have to make sure I don’t piss or frustrate Casey off to the extent that she’ll end up killing me, yet on the other I have a friend for a change. Well, besides John and Sky of course. I want to give her a huge hug right now but somehow I know that will annoy her, I have to do something to show her my gratitude. What though?

With all this going on in my head I fail to see where I’m going, which results me to bumping into John’s back. I land on the ground with a dull thud, causing me to get one of my contacts stuck in my eye. I wince, the dull throb beating in my eye and my other one is trying to stay open. This is when John spins in a circle, gasping at the sight of me. He slams a door open to what I think is my dorm room and yanks me on my feet. God, with Casey yelling at him and his violent gestures on my face is causing me to have a headache. Water is splashed on my face and, oddly enough, my contact falls out of my eye and into drain. That’s when John runs off, not wanting me to rage at him.

Great, that was my only pair. Once my eye is healed, I take the other one out and scout around the room for my glasses. Well, when I say scout, I mean more like a blind old man trying to pick up his pen or how people look for needles in haystacks. My hands just tap against the now open boxes on the floor. I just know that it’s my box that busted open because my dad, the so called genius, always forgets to put sticky tap on the opening. My figures press against a large frame and I pick it up, sliding them on my face. They’re so huge, like goggles or something.

At the corner of my eye, I see Casey picking up all my belongings and placing them on the left bed. What joy, I have to sleep on the left side of the room now? I hate this side of the room; it’s just too weird and somehow disturbing. I sigh, “You really don’t need to…”

Casey laughs, sitting on her bed, “Nah! It’s alright, Alice!”

“You sure?”

“Yeah! I don’t mind,” she stares out the window, “At least we get a nice view, eh?”

I smile, staring at the garden outside of our window, “Indeed, but we need to get curtains.”

She darts her eyes at me, “I didn’t bring any…”

I stand, opening a box full of sheets and curtains, “It’s alright. I have some.” I pull out a thick white one with roses painted all over the rims. As I stick the pole into the opening of the curtain, I couldn’t help but stare at Casey’s possessions. I blink, “Punk bands, huh?”

Casey grins, nodding as she sticky taps a Fall Out Boy poster on her wall, “Yep! And these guys are my all-time faves!”

I chuckle, placing the curtain on the holders and I start to work on my side of the room. I get the covers for my beds and start to make it, “So, do you have any other posters or is it just them?”

“Umm…Hmm,” she searches through her boxes, shaking her head, “Well, none of bands anyway…”

Perfect. Casey is a fan girl, the joy of youth. Good grief. The blue and green strips of my blanket thing for my bed blind me with the light from the sun. I sigh, finishing it off by placing a stuffed animal in the centre, “What are the posters of anyway?”

I turn, only to see the shock of my life. Her bed is decorated with stars and her blanket is a picture of the universe, a stuffed dog sitting in the middle of everything. The walls were bombarded with pictures of famous men, with Johnny Depp and Billy Boy Armstrong staring into my soul. However, I just shake my head, “First, isn’t Billy from Green Day or something?”

Casey nods, “Yep! He’s so cute!”

“Right…And second, why is everything of your so random?”

“Oh,” she stretches, now placing my family photos on a dresser next to my bed, “I like different things. And besides, it’s better to have different things rather than the same ones, that way it makes things more interesting.”

I sit on my bed, “I guess….But why are you helping me? Now that I think about it, why are you putting up all my stuff?”

“Ha ha ha! I just like to help out someone who is my friend,” Casey laughs, “Also, I have OCD.”

No! Why me? I don’t want to put up with that! I just smile, “Which is why you are placing everything of mine neatly everywhere?”

“Uh huh. If I freak ya out in any way, Alice,” she smirks, “Just yell.”

Okay? We finish the room off to a decent arrangement, with my things on the floor and hers on her bed. It’s like scattered leaves all over the place. I walk out of the room and down to the dining hall, feeling rather famished. Anything would sound great for dinner now, like bees and moss or something. My shoes make a clomping noise which echoes off the walls around me, with the heavy breathing of Casey right behind. I wish she would stop following me! Yet again, she’s new, so I can’t just abandon her. We make it down the stairs and to the dining hall, with paintings of flowers and people rushing in my vision.

Let me just say this, dinner is the busiest time of the day.

I line up in line whilst Casey chats to John and Sky. I see Sky laugh, his laugh that fills my heart with joy and pretty much happiness at the darkest of hours. He’s so cute, with his glasses sitting at the bridge of his nose and his blond locks hanging loose from a pony tail. He’s so tall, muscular and cute. Wait, I mentioned cute before, didn’t I? It doesn’t matter though, he’s my sunshine.

All the staring manages to make me bump into someone yet again. This time being someone I hate, Jessica. She is apparently the most popular in the school but I don’t see how though, she’s so rude. Her faces looks like it’s been stretched too many times and her hair is just dying to be free to flow down her back. However, it’s her makeup that is most frightening, with the mascara being so thick that I don’t know her actual eye colour.

Jessica stares, scoffing, “Nerd, where’s your contacts?”

I rub my eye, “Ugh…It’s none of your business…” However, as I take my hand away from her eye, I see Tiffany leaning against a wall. My eyes widen, “Tiffany…”

“Tiffany? Who’s Tiffany?”

“Umm…No one…?”

“Pfft. Okay, psycho girl,” she laughs, “Well, you’re a freak anyway. So I guess glasses do suit you!”

“What do you mean?”

“It hides your crazy eyes, you little slut.”

“Hey! Back off,” John’s deep voice really gives me the creeps, “Just who do you think you are?”

“Heh, you got someone to save you, Allie?”

I groan, oh how I hate that blasted name. However, I just smile, “At least I’ve got someone.”

Everyone just stares blankly at me. What did I do? I just stuck up for myself, like dad is always telling me to do. Tiffany laughs, “Loser!”

I stare, “Just how will this night go?”

“Probably in Hell,” Casey adds in.

Somehow, I think she’s right.

The Messenger Knight here to review for you, and KotGR. Happy Review Day!

you shall be expecting it to come every day.

The bold word needs to be added.
I like the beginning paragraph. I haven't read your previous chapters, but this opening one really get's me interested. It isn't an action scene, or even anyone talking. But it's an interesting topic.
The wind from outside brushes against my hair, pushing is to one side of my face.

Is should be it.
“But he was serious, weren’t he?”

Should be wasn't, not weren't.
He goes back to making out with his fish faced girl.

There should a dash in between fish and faced, connecting the two words.
I line up in line whilst Casey chats to John and Sky.

Line up in line. Try a different word instead of using line twice.
Her faces looks like it’s been stretched

Faces? Yipes! I understand it's just a typo, but it was funny to read.

OK, so you had a couple more spots where you had an extra letter, or you wrote in past tense for a few sentences, but if you re-read it you can find them.
Characters: I liked this chapter a lot, due in part to your characters. Alice seems very real, as well as Casey. All your characters do. Alice is very well written in this, due in part to how much you got into her head. I feel like I knew what was going through her mind, and how she felt, the whole time. You did a good job of balancing detail without boring me out.
Overall this was very good. I hope this helps. I really don't have much negative to say.
Keep it up!

It does. Thank you very much!

Hi SunsetSprite, DK with quick review on your story^^
Something captures my attention immediately at the first paragraph of your story. It is about a mysterious girl who go out every time it rains.Furthermore, you tell the story as the 'first person' who gives a wider space in the story. You are free to talk about what you think and it's something more interesting to read.Just a few things that you might overlooked here;

I watch the clouds roll in and begin to be black*(began to turn black) and full of rage.

*It is more suitable to be used. I am not going to comment much on grammar. Let's the expert do that part ;)
I love how you elaborate this story. However I feel you that enter too many element of monologue on some paragraphs that making it less appetizing to read. It is okay to use that style in your story , but try to minimize it and tell more description on action/ view of character.
with my things on the floor and hers on her bed. It’s like scattered leaves all over the place. I walk out of the room and down to the dining hall, feeling rather famished. Anything would sound great for dinner now, like bees and moss or something.

Like what you did in this paragraph. :)
Apparently I put too much hope in the story. I wondered about the mysterious girl with the rains, but you just put a little story about her. Perhaps you mean to tell more in the next chapter? This is a good story indeed.
I also think you need to practice with the use of punctuation. Some sentences using with less appropriate punctuation marks/Semicolon. I will give a little example here.
My eyes widen and I gesture violently for her to disappear, however* she just taunts me. Why me? Why does everything happen to me? You see, I just want to be considered normal, but with Tiffany around, there’s no guarantee that’ ll happen.

*Using however to open a clause, without any punctuation, turns however into a full conjunction like 'but'. Too much commas here huh? :D
Overall,nice story! Keep it up.
Kudos,cheers.

Thank you very much for this! I'm having a writer's block with thius story at the moment and I was just like...UGH. XD But thanks a lot for this! *hug*
