Chapter One: Willie

I hate love stories. Always have, always will. But I suppose that's what this is.
A love story.

I just started college. Jay University in Nashville, Tennessee. High school had been a very stressful time in my life. I was depressed and suicidal all through it. I was still pretty bad, but I wasn't at 'the lowest point'. The point I had been at four times before in my life. My four suicide attempts.
Now, I'm not trying to write a story that implies that being in a relationship fixes all of your problems, 'cause trust me, it doesn't. And I'm not saying that this would happen for everyone, but my relationship got me through college without killing myself. Which, I guess is a good thing. At least that's what they told me...even though what happened after college was allegedly worse than high school.
The first time I saw Andrew Jay, better known as Andy, was at the college's swimming pool my freshmen year. I was wearing a tankini. Everyone else was wearing a bikini, extremely immodest ones at that. I didn't go to a Christian college even though I was a Christian...and from what I'd seen, even before the mostly naked people at the pool, proved that it was far from it. There was one Christian group that met every Thursday night at a nearby coffee shop. I hadn't gotten the chance to check it out yet.
When I saw Andy he was with a bunch of his friends, mostly girls. They were flirting with him, I could tell from all the way across the pool. He pretty much ignored them and talked to his guy friends, who were obviously jealous that he got all of that attention from the girls. After a minute I realized I was staring and started to look away, but we made eye contact before I could.
He got rid of his friends and swam through the pool to the side I was on. He got out, shook his head like a dog, and rubbed his hands through his hair.
He gave me a once-over and my face turned red because of my tankini. He noticed and said, "Modest is hottest."
My eyebrows shot up. I didn't think a guy as good looking as Andy would ever say something like that to a girl like me.
    "What's your name?" He asked.
    "Will," I responded.
"Will. That's a boy's name," it was a statement, as if that couldn't possibly be my real name. Sure some people asked about it, but they asked.
    "Yeah," I said timidly.
"Is that a nickname then?" He questioned.
"Willie is my full name, but I suppose that's not much better," I answered.
"No, but I like it. It's unique," he said.
"Thanks," I was surprised by the compliment.
"Hey, do you want to go to the hot tub with me?" He asked.
"What, is that code for 'do you want to have sex with me?" I joked opening up a little.
"Hey, I'm a virgin," he defended. "I just wanted to ask if a pretty girl wanted to sit in a  hot tub with me and talk."
"Aren't your friends waiting for you?" I asked.
"Friends? What friends? They guys I was with only hang out with me because of the girls and the ladies only want to take away my virginity," he explained.
"Wow, must suck to be hot," I laughed awkwardly, not really understanding why he was talking to me.
"Come on," he grabbed my hand and pulled me up from my chair. I looked over at his friends and saw all the girls giving me death glares and the guys started whispering. Andy led me to the hot tub and when he got in, everyone else left.
"What, are you disgusting or do you own the place?" I raised my eyebrows but looked away hesitantly when he looked down at me.
"I know you're a freshman but even most freshmen know me," he waited for me to recognize who he was but I shook my head slowly. "I'm the grandson of the school's founder. My dad is the school's president."
"Oh, you're that Jay," I said distastefully but realized that the comment was disrespectful so immediately bit my tongue.
"Do you not like that?" He asked, with an oddly hopeful tone.
"I just don't really like rich people," I said quietly.
"You're not rich? The tuition for JU is outstanding. How did you afford it? Everyone else here is at least a little bit rich," Andy sounded amazed.
"I came from a poor family. I earned my tuition here with academic scholarships and some scholarships from some writing I've entered in contests. I don't rely on my rich parents to get me places in life," I ranted angrily, forgetting to be polite, and started to get out of the hot tub.
"Wait," Andy said.
"What?" I snapped. "Don't people like me ruin your reputation? You probably don't ever want to be seen with me again."
"No, I mean, yeah people like you might ruin my reputation, but I don't really care. You're the girl my dad was talking about-" I butted in.
"Yeah, I bet he hates me - a poor girl at his 'high-class university'. He must be dying to get rid of me," I said just for an excuse to leave.
"No, not at all. He respects you. All the staff do. They think your amazing! I think my dad wishes that I was even half as smart as you, and you're a freshman, I'm a junior. My dad talks about you all the time. He thinks it's amazing that you worked hard enough to get all of your tuition paid, and he wishes there were more people like you in the world," Andy said.
"Yeah, you think I'm gonna believe that?" I laughed nervously and got out of the hot tub. He got out too and followed me back to my stuff where I had been sitting.
"Wait, let me prove it! Come for supper at my house, my dad has been dying to get an excuse to meet you," Andy suggested.
Yeah, well, he still doesn't have a good one," I responded.
"We can say we're dating," he smirked, knowing I wouldn't like the idea.
"And risk crushing your reputation?" I joked.
"Actually, now that I think about it, going out with the smartest girl in the school would be great for my rep," he replied.
"No, I'm not going, and I'm not going to act like your girlfriend," I pulled a ratty old t-shirt over my swimsuit.
"If you don't come then I'll just come and get you and forcefully bring you," he threatened, still smiling.
"Yeah right," I started walking away but he grabbed my wrist and told me his address. "Not happening."

Hello Stephjd9! I hope this review would help you although I'm not that much a pro when it comes to things like this.

I like your beginning. It's powerful and it has already defined the voice of your character. The first lines gave the readers a shadow of what they're going to get. I just hope as I read further through the chapters, I'll see that your opening lines here would stay true to the rest of the chapters.

The second paragraph is a little bit off, I think. It feels like you're just describing. And it's really the hardest part of writing. You need to be able to 'tell' and to 'paint' a picture of your story.

The dialogues are pretty great. They represent your characters pretty well.

Congratulations in advance for writing such an almost flawless piece!

"I hate love stories. Always have, always will. But I suppose that's what this is. A love story"
Just two sentences, eighteen words. But they really do give a good sense of the character's personality. Personally I'm a big fan of the more cynical hero. In my opinion it makes for a more interesting story. If it's written well, that is, and yours definitely was.

Conflict between characters is another thing I like a lot, whether it's on a large or small scale. The whole thing with Andy trying to be nice and Willie (Cool name choice by the way) responding with hostility because he's rich was really interesting. Also the way Andy's friends reacted hints at there possibly being issues in the future.

Like Dracula said in their review, "I just started college. Jay University in Nashville, Tennessee. High school had been a very stressful time in my life. I was depressed and suicidal all through it. I was still pretty bad, but I wasn't at 'the lowest point'. The point I had been at four times before in my life. My four suicide attempts." was rather awkward to read.

However that was the only problem that I really saw, which is pretty exceptional considering this is your first work on this site. Well done, and I'll definitely be reading chapter 2. :)

Hey, thanks! This is probably the most encouraging review I've gotten (like you said, you are an encourager like me) :) You also pointed out some helpful stuff so I'll keep it in mind! Thanks again!!

Hello and Happy Review Day!

I just started college. Jay University in Nashville, Tennessee. High school had been a very stressful time in my life. I was depressed and suicidal all through it. I was still pretty bad, but I wasn't at 'the lowest point'. The point I had been at four times before in my life. My four suicide attempts.
I found this paragraph a little choppy. Especially between 'lowest point' and 'the point'. I suggest you try and join those two sentences to make it flow better. Also, the sentence about being depressed all through high school doesn't flow that well either. All the way through it sounds better, but it's up to you.

I promise this is the last paragraph I'll paste here. You've mentioned high school and college so many times that I've become confused. What happened after college? Also, from skipping from high school to after college, you've made me think that you didn't even mean it was worse than highschool, but worse than college. Now I'm confusing myself again. :p But you get the point. Hopefully. I didn't explain it very well.

"I know you're a freshman but even most freshmen know me,"
This sentence reads too fast. A comma after freshman would fix it.

Those are the only things you need to edit. I actually really enjoyed this chapter! You write dialogue really well and I enjoyed getting to know your characters. I'll definitely read chapter two some time. :)

Thanks! this is helpful stuff!! I'll definitely take this into consideration.

Hello Stephjd9,

Well I must admit, I was literally imagining every bit of this chapter. Good for a start, but I must say that your story is kind of moving on too fast. I think you should slow down a bit and give a bit more description to each scene. Nonetheless, really love your idea behind this as it really portrays the phase of life as a college student. I will be waiting for the other chapters.
Well good luck...... :)

Thanks so much! I agree and I'll definitely remember to add extra detail when I revise this chapter! Thanks for the feedback! (and the follow!)

I commend your first published work to YWS, my dearest Stephanie:).
And congrats on the likes! You've got as many as I've ever gotten on a novel/chapter. Most people don't care enough to read through all of em.
I'm liking the idea for this story. And how you begin by clearly stating that your main character (MC) hates love stories. Yet, whether we like it or not, love is a part of all our lives.
I think you could have used a little more mystery and room for the story to grow on us instead of nearly telling us the ending in the first few sentences. I mean I know we don't know what's going to happen, but you hint at how it will wrap up. I don't think this is necessary.
You define your characters well. Snappy dialogue that really shows the characters. I might like a little more description to balance out all the dialogue, however.
As far as your MC I think there's just one big issue that sticks out to me most: she's a freshman in college, she's new to the place, and she describes this clearly high-up guy who's loved by all. Tons of power and money. When he first remarks to her, she seems taken aback and surprised; obviously she's never been "hit on" like this before. But then...she becomes perfectly fine and even sassy to the guy. Acts super self-confident. It just kind of contradicts what I as a reader thought her initial reaction was, to see how she then responded and the conversation that followed with Jay. Get what I mean?
Keep working! Always room for improvement; I revise not to judge, but as a writer worthy of judgment on the same level.
Love to see some more stuff from you Steph!!

DUDE! THIS IS ON THE FRONT PAGE! CONGRATS!

Thanks for this review! This stuff is definitely helpful and I've already begun to revise it, taking into consideration the 'one big issue' you mentioned. When I read through it again I can totally see where you're coming from with that! Thanks so much, and YAY that's so cool that it got front page for a while!!!

I found this very interesting and good. However, I feel as though it could use more detail. I found it was difficult to get into and a struggle to hold my interest until he swam over to her and the conversation began, even then i feel as though it could use more description. For example maybe when she states about how she earned her tuition maybe elaborate with how she earned the scholarships. Did she study hard? Play sports? etc.

Thanks so much for this feedback! I'll definitely take this into consideration. I totally agree that I could use a lot more description! Thanks again!!

Heya pretzelsing here for a review,

Okay, so I will do both general things and nitpicks and I hope that it all help better improve your writing.First of all, what has thrown me off was Will and Andy, two male names and I thought at first while looking at your title that this was like a same-sex relationship which I am dead against. I personally, if I were the writer would change the name to more feminine because I wasn’t going to read your story simply because this was a romance story with two male names. Here is a YWS name generator that you could use if you would like to.

Okay, first of all at the beginning of the story in the first two paragraphs, you are giving us as readers an info dump, which is way too much information. All this about Willie’s high school experiences should be skillfully spaced throughout your whole novel. At the beginning while reading this, it was just too much.

This is a little nitpick that I picked up on:

After a minute I realized I was staring and started to look away, but we made eye contact before I could.

I think that you should change we to he because it was Andy that made eye contact.

Also I think that this is an unnecessary catchphrase that I wouldn't use in my writing:

"Modest is hottest.

I also noticed this very important thing, you have to rate your story age appropriately! It seems like you are not that new to Yws so here is a quick reminder in the form of a link Content Ratings Guideline

Also I think that I would like to see some more character development, and just show us the individual personality of Will and Andy. Here is an article about Basic Character Development Also you should show their character through their dialogue, work on the dialogue to make it strong. Have a meaningful conversation or something like that.

Here you were repeating yourself too many times:

"Will. That's a boy's name," it was a statement, as if I said my name wrong, as if that couldn't possibly be my real name.[s] Sure most people asked about it,[s] but they asked.but Andy stated.

You repeated yourself over and over with two things.I would fix it like that by crossing out and adding that but. Really try hard not to repeat yourself it’s annoying kind of
Overall your story has some potential if you really work hard at it and edit it thoroughly. Also try to vary your sentence length, make some sentences longer, and with more details about everything that is going on around them. Maybe consider telling us how Will feels in the hot tub? Why does Andy look at her in the first place? Why doesn't Willie want to go to Andy’s house?Keep those things in mind and just answers question that need answers.

I hope that this review helps you and I encourage you to keep on writing!

Hey, pretzelsing! Thanks so much for this review! I found it very helpful! I do agree that people may think it's going to be a same-sex relationship, I really like the names I have and I'm sure people will understand if they read the whole chapter. Once I get a couple more review and go back to change some stuff I'll definitely take some of the things you said into account. Thanks again for the review, I'll try to keep this stuff in mind!

Also, I am quite new to YWS and this is my first post so I wasn't sure of what to do for the rating. What would you suggest: probably 12 or 16 , right?

Despite everything, it's still you.
