Written for NaPo earlier this year. Again just posting it. Constructive crit welcome and enjoy!
don't let the light burn you
this darkness is so deep
and absolute
that i cannot help but think
of the sun or the moon,
a splash of colour and light
across stone and grass and trunk
but the sun won't reach me down here
in the deep and the dark
where only shadows and demons dwell
don't let the light burn you
on your way out

The last line “don’t let The light burn you on your way out.” Reminds me of the saying ‘don’t let the door hit you on the way out.’ I feel it comes from a place of discouraging love. To make a statement of you’re better than what I can give you. I am not good enough for you and will only bring you down. But it comes from a place of good intentions. I wish there was more to this poem. I feel like there is so much more that could be said. You refer yourself to a demon, that the sun won’t reach. I can’t help but feel a sense of despair and slight acceptance. This poem also almost gives me a sense of longing for ‘the light’ the positive and beautiful parts of life that maybe is just out of my reach, though I don’t feel I deserve it anyway. Great job incouraging imagery and longing for what one may deem as unreachable.
Anyways, that’s how it made me feel. Great job.
My first reaction when reading this poem is how much I thoroughly enjoyed the title. The dichotomy and almost oxymoronic action of light -- a typically "good" or "positive" symbol -- causing something as painful as a burn is a powerful enough metaphor to capture my interest without having even reading the poem itself.
In terms of the poem itself, I thoroughly enjoyed your usage of imagery; the contrasting images presented by the sun vs. the moon as opposed to the dreariness of a "deep" and "dark" place where evil "demons" dwell really helps bring the poem to life.
On a more personal preference note, perhaps the poem may have benefited from a period in the very last stanza, but again, this is more of a personal comment of mine. Intentionally leaving the last two lines without punctuation can help propagate a sense of urgency (or even anxiety) within the reader; if this was the intended effect, I applaud you for implementing it so well.
Overall, I loved the poem!
Hi!
I really like this poem! It was really dark, but in a good way. I love the title; it was kind of controversial in that generally light in considered a good thing but now you’re reminding us it can also cause hurt. That’s how I saw it, at least.
I also really liked the line ‘the sun won’t reach me down here’, because it’s kind of like you’re giving up, but you portray it in a really powerful way. I don’t know, I really liked that.
I was only a little confused at your rhyme scheme. I couldn’t tell if it was meant to be rhyming or not. In the first four lines, I thought it was supposed to be, but for the rest, I wasn’t sure.
Yeah. I hope this helps!
