Chapter Three
What?
Mmm, Saturday. Possibly the best day of the entire week. Suddenly remembering the text Ava sent me, I picked up my phone.
Ya, she really did send me that invitation. But what time?
What time should I come over? I typed to Ava.
About five minuets later came her reply.
Now.
Well OK then.
I went to my dresser, first things first, I had to pick out cloths.
When I sat down at my computer to print directions, I was wearing my home made dark short shorts, and a Pac Sun zebra print tank top, and black gladiator sandals. OK, now where is this place? After I Map Quested it, I wrote a note to my Mom, and Dad explaining where I was going. They were off doing their morning yoga. And I set off on the hour and a half car ride.
When I got to the massive wrote iron gate I couldn't see the house at all.
Wow, big property.
I had to check my phone again to get the entry number right. As I slowly drove the windy rode that led to Ava and Katie's House I suddenly became creeped out. The woods surrounding Ava and Katie's property were scary, the tall thin trees were closely mushed together. Even in the mid day sun I could imagine some beast lurking out there. Shivering I sped the car up a little.
When I reached the house I was astonished. The thing was a monster! It was three stories and had a tennis court on one side and the biggest pool I've ever seen peeking behind it. This was a house that belonged on Mtv's Cribs.
I hesitantly got out of my car, and walked up to the door. Right when I raised my hand to knock, the door swung open. Katie was on the other side wearing red flannel pj shorts and a baggy charity T. I felt was over dressed.
“Hi.” I said in a questioning voice.
“Hey!” Katie answered brightly, “Come on in! I'll give you the grand tour while Ava finishes getting ready.”
“OK, cool.”
“Well, as you can see this is the entrance.” Stated Katie gesturing vaguely around the room. “Up there's a Strass Cristal Chandelier. It's been in our family since 1899. Pretty isn't it?”
“Wow, ya it's beautiful!” And it was. The Crystal looked spotless and sparkled with out seeming to have moved at all.
We the walked down the hall way into the 'Family Room'. The room was the size of my bottom story all together.
“This is the Family Room and we don't really use it that much...we actually don't really use this house at all. Anyways this room is very expensive, and blah blah blah. It's not that cool.”
I laughed at that, “Wow, how much did this house cost?”
“Hm, about four million.” Katie said casually.
“Oh wow!” I gasped. “Where are your parents?”
“They're somewhere in Europe. I don't really pay attention where anymore.”
“Wow, your really lucky to live here all by yourself! My parents would never let me do that!”
“I'm sure they would if they were multi billionaires and had a nanny raise you, so they had no real connection with their own child.” Stated Ava roboticly from the door way.
“Hey!” I said brightly. I was slightly put off by what she just said.
“Hi.” She said in the same dead tone.
A purple furry pillow suddenly hit Ava in the face.
“Shut up, gosh today your all emo. It's annoying, drink some caffeine already!” Katie said plopping herself down on their modern couch.
“Ow, that hurt!” said Ava frowning.
“How could that hurt? Its a furry pillow!” I asked smiling.
Ava playfully pouted saying in a soft voice, “Katie threw it hard...”
Katie giggled and put her hands up indicating that Ava should throw it back. Ava held on to it and walked over to me.
“Here ya go,” She handed me the pillow. “A purple furry pillow for you!”
I smiled a little embarrassed, “Um, thanks!”
“Hey! That's my pillow!” exclaimed Katie in mock anger.
“To bad!” Ava said with her back to Katie.
After that it got quiet. Not knowing what to do, I cleared my throat, “So, what are we doing today?”
“Oh, ya I forgot to tell you! We're just going to try and not get our sorry asses killed when we go back to Lawboynia.” Katie said as if she were discussing the weather. Ava quickly slapped her wrists, “Ow! What was that for!” Katie hollered.
Ava grunted staring at her then grunted again staring at me. “Wha-oh.” Katie said realizing what she had said.
“What?” I asked staring at both Ava and Katie.
“What? What's What?” Ava said slightly coking her head to the side and unsuccessfully trying to seem nonchalant.
“What did Katie just say?” I asked again.
“She said 'Wha-oh.' It's sort of our secret language! That meant...I have to fart.” Ava said pinching her nose.
“What! No it doesn't! It mean wha-oh.” Katie said trying to clear things up.
“Well, what does wha-oh mean?” I asked slowly.
Katie paused and then exasperated said, “Oh my god! OK this is what we're doing today!”
Ava interrupted, “Shut up Katie,” she warned, “don't freak her out.”
Rolling her eyes Katie annoyed answered, “I wont! OK, so, Penelope, before we came here we knew that your sister was kidnapped.” Once again unsure what to do I hugged the pillow closer to my chest. Katie continued, “In fact, we know the lady who kidnapped her.”
I gasped not believing what I was hearing, “You do! You know her! Wait are you friends with her!?”
Ava barked a harsh laugh, “Ah no. I hate her. Little-”
“OK! Anyways,” Katie interrupted Ava's curse word, “We're pretty sure where she is. But, we can't get to her with out you.”
I thought about what they were implying, was this like some movie or book where a normal girl is actually really special and holds the key for something amazing! And falls in love with a prince, and saves the day! Oh I hope it is!
My heart filled up with excitement and I tried to hide my smile, “Why do you need me?” I asked hopping that I was right.
“Oh, we can't go into our country with out having someone who isn't put under this, for lack of a better word, curse.” explained Ava.
I instantly deflated. So I'm just means of transportation. Great.
“Not that we don't need you! We've never successfully operated with just two. It always been either three or four. Well, actually just three, the fourth didn't work out so well.” Katie said in a soft voice, casting watchful glances at Ava, who had set her jaw. I made a mental note to find out the story behind that.
Ava cleared her throat loudly. “So, you in? Are you coming with us to save your sister and kill the people who took her?”
I nervously laughed, “I'm ready to save my sister! I, um, I'm not to sure on the killing part though.”
Ava dropped her chin and looked at me darkly, “Screw this.” She stalked determinedly up to me, with her right palm up. On her palm was a black scar that stood out against her creamy skin. As she got closer to me the lighter the scare got. Up to the point where it was so white it hurt to look at. When her hand was inches from my nose, she lunged forward and smacked my forehead.
I flew backwards, but her hand was still against my face. The pain was to it's climax. I couldn't stand the light nor the breath taking agony.
When I woke I had a splitting headache and was lying covered with blanket on the couch. Not wanting to move I stayed there with my eyes closed. Two voices were whisper arguing.
“You didn't have to nearly fry her brain! We need her!” said one voice.
Fry who's brain? I thought lazily Ha ha, scrambled egg brain! Aliens would eat that! Poor person.
“Katie! Doing what I did just saved a lot of time, and it didn't kill her! She's still alive! And by doing what I did it might just save our lives if we got into a fight.” Oh, that was Ava talking to Katie. But who were they talking about?
“OK, first of all, we don't know if she's brain dead or not” Katie whispered.
“But if she's brain dead she's still alive!” countered Ava.
“Not my point! And fine! Your Ava. And Ava can do whatever she wants cause she's the special one. God! You've always been favored over me! You got Elizabeth and you won the bet! You turned Slum Dog Royalty into a killing machine that bested even you!”
“Shut up!” Ava whispered in a deadly voice. “I will kill her after I kill Eric Tillman and Vivian March! God I hate their names!”
After a pause Katie softly whispered, “I'm sorry for bringing them up. I know two betrayals hurt. And I promise Ava I'll help you.”
Ava snorted. “Thanks Katie but after Elizabeth somehow got out of a blood oath and Eric got out of an even stricter blood oath, promises, mean nothing to me.”
After that I started to stir. So that's why Ava doesn't like it when certain things are mentioned. Two friends betrayed her. But what's a blood oath? That sounds like something out of Dunces and Dragons.
“You up?” asked Katie.
Rubbing my head I muttered, “Ya, what happened?”
“I made you into something special.”
I opened my eyes in alarm. Wow. Everything was sharp, everything I looked at I could see their potential use in any situation. It wasn't like every detail was vibrant, like I was Super Man. It was just that I knew what to use if I was attacked, what could burn easily to make a fire, I could analyze everything.
“Pretty cool huh?” said Ava with an exited, dancing, gleam in her jewel green eyes.
“Ya, I'll say.” I breathed.
“Are you OK? Are you likening how you see? I promise I didn't know anything a bout this.” Katie rambled.
“No. I love it!” I exclaimed. I had never been the type of person who wished that I was special, who wanted my life to be like a fairy tail. But now that it was, I couldn't stand the thought of going back. “Um, is this temporary?” I asked them both.
Katie answered first in a rushed tone, “It can be! If that's what you want! After all this is done we can reverse it and you can go back to your normal life! OK?”
“NO!” I yelled sitting up. My vision clouded, I slowly lowered my self. “No, I never could go back after this.”
I looked up at the two girls. Katie's eyes were darting everywhere and her lips were in a thin, worried line. Ava however was calm and staring at me with a small, proud smile.
What was our relationship exactly? Sometimes they were completely cold to me. Other times they were inviting. Was that because they needed me for their revenge plan? Wait, no it was also mine. Except I never imagined this would happen. I always imagined I would find my sister then pepper spray the woman who took her, then call the cops. After that it would be all over and things would go back to normal.
In that moment I decided that Ava and Katie were my friends, they were cold maybe because they were P.M.S.ing? And inviting because they wanted to be my friends? Ya, I'll go with that.
“So, when do we leave?” I asked standing up.
