Okay. I heard praactically everyone talking about the Twilight books and films so I decided that I would give them ago and read the first book. I was kinda dissapointed with it. I didnt really like it that much. Does anybody else agree with me.?

Hey! I meant that I read it till over halfway - as I got more and more into the story, it became easier (indeed, it was just so FUNNY to read about the mighty and elusive Dracula clawing around the walls of the castle at midnight) but when I gave it a break for a bit...yeah, that's when it got difficult to continue.

Anyway, like I said, people should try giving both a read before they rubbish Twilight. It's quite the eye-opener.
Don't feel ashamed.
I read the first few sentences, and stopped. The old style of writing just didn't appeal to me.
For all those who don't like Twilight...try reading Count Dracula - the Count Dracula in all its glory.
).
I, well, I tried reading it, I honestly did.
(but it was devilishly hard, pardon the pun
Hehe, you're going to kill off the sparklies too? I did that a long time ago. But it was more of a military story, of all things.

*Shrugs* I made it work. Napalm packed grenades are the sparklies worst enemy.
SPWEE! A follower! *high fives*
May I just say right here and now: the Twilight series was O.K. Not great, not wonderful, but not a stinking pile of poo either. Really, it didn't desreve the attention it got {and is still getting}. There are only 4 characters that I like because they have some poetinal: Alice, Jasper, Seth, and Emmett. Why you ask?
Seth is a sweetie; she could have tortured him though to lose his faith in vampires or kill his sister or just off half of the wolf pack.

Alice and Jasper are far more entertaining then a physotic, silly human girl with no sense of surrival and her emo, mentally abusive beau. Jasper's struggle with human blood could have been more highlighted {cue any detailed gore massacares? DEF more detailed fights or, sracth that, it just needed more fights in general. I can hear the blood thirsty people cheering already}. Emmett is a big bro char and my heart has always gone out to those. And Kellan Lutz is cute
The moive had me laughing my a$$ off. Literally. the first one I was laughing so hard my two friends got mad at me and stopped the DVD, refusing to play it till I stopped laughing. So I offered to save their sanity by playing The Green Mile. Haven't seen the second movie either.
Twilight in general had TON of cliches: boring clumsy girl who's popular for no apperent reason {being a new girl doesn't count. I finished my senoir year of high school at a different high school and no one came flocking to me like they did her.}, sparky {eck really?} vampire who is attracted to said boring girl who just so happens to block her thoughts from him, oh and let's not forget the freaky demon baby thingy takes all the ups and downs out of new motherhood.
I am writing a Twilight fanfic {so I don't want anyone calling me a hypocritc} on here called Beauitful Disaster but I assure you, there are NO cliches and I plan on killing half of the Cullen clan {Nessie included, yes I'm going there} and either all or most of the La Push wolf pack towards the end. Unless you consider a main character who's trained as an assassin struggling to maintain her sanity after Jasper inadvertnely rips off her lover's head off cliche? Hope not. I'm doing my best to make my fanfic a better read then all that emo, cliche Twilight stuff
Btw love the Noble Dead Saga, by Barb and J.C. Hendee. Tis the bomb
I've tried to read that before, Rodhead.
It's huge! Never got around to it though. :/

BUT! A great series of Vampire books is the Noble Dead Saga, by Barb and J.C. Hendee. Just awesome.
Never read Twilight...never will.
I'm reading "the Historian" at the moment! It's brilliant!
Has any body read that one before?
But the more that I think about it, Twilight is actually pretty bad. Bad fad. (Ooh, that rhymes!)
~KD
I liked the first three Twilight books.
I thought that they were very entertaining. They don't have any universal messages to be gained from them, they're not particularly literary, but they kept me entertained.
Breaking Dawn on the other hand had no redeeming features. Like the first three books, it contained no message whatsoever (except maybe "don't have sex before marriage"), and the plot just failed on so many levels. It was only entertaining in the same way that a car crash is.
Yeah same here. My friends and my cousins were talking about "how great the twilight series is and your weird if you've never read it." So I read it and thought they are the weird people for liking it so much. It's just another vampire-love story.
Now the whole twilight series has kicked off the years of the vampires. Like there's that new vampire show, um what was it, oh yeah, VAMPIRE diaries. And all the books are being made into movies. People are going to get tired of it fast. I hate it.
...So today in my class on Faulkner a girl tried to defend Twilight and actually attempted to put it on the same pedestal as anything Faulkner has done. God help us all.
Twilight was okay...but nothing great. Just a week ago I got myself to read it, since my friends kept on talking on and on about great it was, and what a fantastic writer Meyer is. I can't imagine how people can think that Twilight is one of the greatest books in the world, since in my opinion, it's nowhere close to that status. But I still don't think Twilight is horrible.
) anytime soon.
The funniest part in the story for me (though Meyer definitely did not mean it to be) is when Bella describes how 'sparkly' Edward is. I mean sparkly vampires? Come on!
The characters didn't seem to have very complex personalities...they seem a bit 2-D to me, as everyone else said. Meyer had an interesting idea for Twilight, but everything became a bit boring for me in the end. At times she was also very repetitive in many different ways.
Twilight is mainly just a fad. I'm sure other people have said that already before me. I don't have a very strong opinion about it, and I don't think I'm going to be checking out the next book (whatever it is!
~KD
Whatever it is,I think Bella is so stupid. She is so dull and unhappy all the times. She spreads moroseness.
I think that it is a travesty to literacy. But, hey, at least it was a break from Harry Potter.
Twilight was just... ugh. I don't understand how people could like those books. Edward is a crazy stalker with control issues. He crawls through Bella's bedroom window and watches her sleep. If that's not a ten on the Creep Scale I don't know what is. Bella had the intelligence of a turtle, and she was the dullest character I've ever read about. Slogging through those books was just torture. How did Meyer even manage to get it published? She's a shame to writers everywhere.
And the ending of Breaking Dawn was just pathetic. Meyer just got lazy and couldn't bear to off any of her characters. I personally would have been delighted to have Edward and Bella keel over at the end, but no, they have to live happily ever after... Gag. I hate romance books, especially bad romance books.
~ Maggie
I liked it. But the principal character, bella, is such an idiot, she's always like "you die I die, you live I live." And she's so sexually needy, she talks about how much she wants to sleep with Eward since like the second book. I liked the rest of the characters and stories.
And for the plot...NO COMMENTS!!!
To add to your comments...
How can we be jealous of Stephenie Meyer and not of J. K. Rowling? I love the Harry Potter books and I'm not envious of them, and I'm sure many of us can say the same.
I loathe Twilight.
There is no character development.
Bella is just attention seeking, she gets a great start. when you start a new school you'd want people to be friendly and nice, she gets that. She gets the awesome guy, but she still finds something to complain about.
Edward acts like her Dad and he gets boring after awhile.
And vampires sparkling? What a joke.
I know and it wasn't just long it was repetitve, the plot of the series could have been easily put into two books instead of being dragged out that long.
I just want to say something. Did those books really have to be that long? I mean, it seemed like Meyer just rambled about nothing for a hundred pages and then maybe something sort of interesting would happen. Those books could be way shorter.
I mean there are long books, but at least those books were interesting.
Thank you Jassie for clearing up the whole jealousy mess. I honestly couldn't be jealous of her for writing that series because I wouldn't want to be known for writing something that amatuer. Besides I like my writing, I work hard when I write, and I'm damn proud of it.
Many people who are interested in writing or have taken creative writing classes either in high school OR college might know one very important rule in writing a good book:
1. Not everyone should be happy in the end of a book.
When someone dies, or a character loses something and the book ends in an interesting way, it actually makes the book better.
I've "killed off" some favorite characters of mine in my short stories to enhance the story and make it better.
Think of JK Rowling... how many people has she killed in her famous serious Harry Potter?
Yes there was a happy ending.. but not every single person Harry met was able to enjoy that happiness with him, right?
I was extremely disappointed in the Twilight series. In my opinion, Stephenie Meyer got very lazy when writing the last book and the ending sucked.
That's just my opinion, some people loved the series, beginning to end.
But us writers... not so much. (Although many of you may say otherwise)
I just want to suggest that nobody here does an ending like Twilight. Please. I'm BEGGING you lol
I want to see everyone here succeed in their writing, not become a sell-out or lazy novelist.
Nobody wants to read a book that the author didn't love writing beginning to end, right?
Love,
Jassie.
P.S.
I think the ending sucked so much because after she realized she had something good going and the money was flowing in, she wouldn't have to do anything to make the ending special because she was relying on the fact that she had so many fans that would definitely buy her book. And THAT my friends is L-A-M-E. lol...
P.P.S.
I know people are saying that everyone who complains about Twilight are just jealous of Stephanie Meyer and her riches and fame and everything and that we just envy her.
That is NOT the case with me. People who do envy her.. I don't understand.
Nobody should envy anyone. Everyone has their own unique self.
I think I am a good writer. I'm not being egotistical. Everyone on this website who writes stories should have confidence in themselves to say that they are good at writing. There is no need to envy her.
And I actually feel sorry that Meyer fell into that trap. Her story ending could have been different.
With Meyer's case... maybe she's dreamed of being a writer since she was a child... maybe she's been writing stories her entire life.
BUT... maybe she never took creative writing classes, picked up a Write Your Own Story book, or even compared herself to other author's writing.
That's what we do to become better, right?
Maybe she never did that... and I feel sorry for her if she didn't.
No, I don't like her writing style.. it disappoints me. But I would never envy her. Not even for a million dollars.
I love my writing style and I'm sticking with it. The reason I don't like hers is because it doesn't seem author-ish.
Note: I hate damsel in distress stories.. and because of that I didn't actually read Twilight. But I have a sister who loved it and we share books we like all the time. And she happened to pretty much tell me the ENTIRE Twilight series broken up in 4 different conversations (after she read each book)
And when she told me the ending to the last book I wanted to scream. I had to telling her the entire time how much I disliked the story but that was my opinion.
In a nutshell, I just wish Meyer could have done things a little bit more creatively.
I'm not envious of her because I think I'm writing an awesome story right now and I'm not going to stop until I get it published, even if I have to publish it myself. :]
XD I think it might be a bit harsh to say she has half a brain. I think she could be an excellent writer, if she just learned how to plot, how to develop characters, and how to write dialog. I mean, she writes very similar to how I wrote when I was in seventh grade.

It just bugs me that everyone is obsessing over a sucky book, and that real good authors remain in the shadows where no one can appreciate them.
Alright. I read Twilight about..two maybe three years ago, I believe. I continued the series and just...treated it like any other book. The first time I thought it was okay. It wasn't a favorite and I didn't hate it, I jut thought it was okay.
I read it again. I think I almost vomited. I really despise. Twilight. If Meyer got published than any person on this site can get published, easily. Personally I think Meyer has about half a brain, and the half she does have is about suckering teenage girls with perfect boys, that they know is impossible to have. Seriously.
Amen, sistah.
I have to say that I agree with all of this. Except that I'm actually pretty plot oriented but Twilight had no real plot. It was just a bunch of angst ,suspense that built up to nothing, flowery prose sprinkled every where, and ridiculous ideas passing for originality.
I always imagined him with redish-brown hair. You know, a russet color? XD I dunno why.
I hated Twilight, personally.
a) Romance fans tend to love this book, for obvious reasons. But hard-core fantasy fans, like me, tend to despise it with every fiber of our being. Vampires are supposed to be awful, awaesome, awe-inspiring, fearsome, frightening, and vicious monsters of the night. That is their beauty, and we love it. Meyer, however, has corrupted that image, and made her vampires into sparkling sex objects to lust over. It's disgusting, and I am highly disturbed.
b) People who are more plot-oriented love this book, because her flow and wording is exquisite. However, character-oriented people, like me, hate it. Her characters are weak and shallow, with no development at all. And they all word everything the exact same way when they talk.
Twilight's popular so people tend to see it every where and it often comes up in conversation. Everyone who's heard of it has their own opinion of the series. This topic was made by someone who didn't like it, so why are all the fans commenting? They have their opinions on it, and so do the people who didn't like it.
I want to be a novelist so I tend to analyze books to find what's good and what's bad about them, which has really helped me improve my writing, so I tend to read popular books to find out why they're so popular.
Either way, everyone is titled to their own opinion and has the right to share it.
I read Twilight. I read New moon. Then Eclipse, and then Breaking Dawn. Right now, I still like those. Sure, I do agree with the over description of the guy, the basic plot. I disliked the end. It should have stayed by new Moon. Eclipse was something very forgetful, and Breaking Dawn reached ridiculous.

Twilight is not that bad. I recently read The Host, and I think is much better. I loved it! And now compared to Twilight, I see Twilight was like a first experience, where Stephenie Meyer was not that bad. I have never read The Vampire Chronicles, or how ever those are called, but by what i read on this it's a serie for another kind of audience. Getting obsessed over this is too much, and getting obsessed over hating it, is also too much. If people don't like it, then why are they posting at threads like this? Only to waste time on talking about something they don't like. I hate spiders. But I don't go around searching for them...
I won't lie I loved Twilight. I loved it because of Jacob. He seemed like an actual person not just a figment of Stephenie's imagination. I tried to re-read Twilight earlier this month out of summer-time boredom, but I just couldn't find what I liked in it. When I first read it the beginning was boring and i kept putting the book down to find something else to do. I even cleaned my room to get away from having to read it. Anyway after awhile I guess I just fell into the Twilight fandom which everyone else and had my mind clouded with all the supposed sparkly greatness of the entire saga. They were generally okay, but I thought Breaking Dawn was such a stupid book that I just can't read it again. It ended so sappily ever after and I got sick of fairy tale endings when I was 6. So thats that.
Haha I do to, but even when I read InkHeart I always imagined Dustfinger with black hair. so maybe it is just me haha. I like a lot of books with different styles but I don't maybe I am weird for liking Twilight.
Ha ha yeah ignorance is bliss
At least sometimes it is, I like to know what I'm reading but everyones differnt.
Yeah I guess, but I'd rather be stupid and love books than be smart and hate them all haha.
I know what you mean, sometimes it's hard to just read a book. Now that I've started to learn about writing I've begun to see mistakes in everything. For example I used to really like the Inhertiance series but now I realize that its not really great at all. I guess tthis comes back to the saying 'Live and Learn' right?
Maybe but I see errors in everything now a days.
Or a really good editor, Twilight just seemed really amateurish to me. It could have been a better book series if Meyer spent more time and effort on it.
Very true, but every book has errors, and it would take a advanced writer to realize it.
Exactly, Twilight was to descriptive when it came to the little stuff but didn't have enough explaination where it was needed.
Hmmmm I have had trouble picturing characters. I pictured Jasper with dark hair, and emmett with blond he he. Yeah I think there are errors, but every book has them.
It's easy to understand because the plot and characters had no depth. The only time we really learned about characters is when they were explained in a simple way.
I think books should have at least a little bit or depth to them that the author could show (not tell) in their story to make it interesting yet understandable. And yes this can be done quite easily as many of the writers on this site and else where have shown.
Personally I don't like books that are hard to understand either, I get bored with them and then frustrated when it doesn't make sense. Which is why I didn't really start reading anything until Grade four.
Then I started learning about writing literature, and how an old idea is often used over and over again. I also learned the term 'Mary-Sue'. Which is a story that an author writes about a mirror image of themselves but makes it easy for the reader to see themselves as the main character.
In fact let me take two quotes form Smeyer's website (the FAQ section to be exact):
I don't mean to be rude, and if ya'll start sellin books I will buy and read them, but I do really like Twilight. I think that it's because it is an easy read. I don't like things that I have to sit there for an hour to figure out. It gets on my nerves.
Gah! I hate when people say that! Nothing personal to you, though.
Anyways, why do I not like Twilight? Because it was really cliche. She completely changed the way vampires were perceived, which was kind of weird. Also, Bella bored the hell out of me. It's the same cliche: The really hot, perfect, nice, well mannered, guy falls for the boring, clumsy girl. I've read to many books like that which is part of the reason I don't read much romance anymore. Edward is way to perfect, why can't Meyer just make him a bit less perfect? Everyone has flaws, even vampires with flawless skin and breathtaking eyes. Stephenie just needs to make him more real.
I read all the Twilight books. And I used to really like them. But, then I started writing my own stuff and when I read I would think about the authors writing. And then I thought about Meyer's and found a lot of things I thought were wrong about Twilight. And I guess I realized it's definitely not as good as everyone thinks it is.
Hm lemme see, make the main character seem better than all the other girls in town, make the love interest perfect, make everyone fell sorry for main character, base the main plot off of older and better literature, go on about nothing for pages upon pages, add random bad characters so the book has some real plot, make sure the book has a pretty cover, and do all that while writing like an average thirteen year-old.
Yeah I think we can manage.
I loved the Twilight series! I can't believe all you people. Maybe there were some things wrong with it, but can ya'll write like that and then sell a lot of books? Probly not...
Sorta, it kinda sucks that there is that prejudice in books but it's part of marketing. I just hate it when people obsess about Twilight and call it the best book in the world when it's a shameless Mary-sue.
Ah. I think I must have misunderstood you. I'm sorry. (: Still, I stick to what I said. It may seem that we have the same opinion...
Yes I see the Hollywood effect in books where the main character is always attractive but that wasn't what I meant.
What I meant is that Bella describes herself as plain and ordinary yet everyone sees her as extraordinarily beautiful. It's annoying, especially when Bella says she's plain and then describes her skin as ivory white. If she really was self conscious she would describe her skin by comparing it to something unattractive, such as fish belly white. The whole thing just really annoyed me because she constantly contradicts herself through out the entire series.
But don't YOU see. Bella is not just a girl. Okay let me ask you something. Bella has perfectly clear skin, slender, heart shaped face and long brown hair. Even her eyes are described as one of her most attractive features. She's not exactly normal. That dosen't sound normal to me. She actually sounds really pretty.
Now, tell me would you have liked this story still if Bella was fat and pimple faced, etc, etc. To be completely honest, I wouldn't have. I'm not trying to be mean and I know half of you will never admit to this, but we are all prejudiced. Just like with movies. If you had two really hot actors/actresses with a decent storyline would you watch it? What about a decent storyline with two old actors/actresses. How many of you would choose the first one? Most people. I've seen this before.
I'm not trying to be rude or anything, but I just wanted to tell you that Bella is not described as some regular girl. I mean she can block her thoughts. That's not regular either. Anyway, that's all I really had to say. As you can imagine, I do not like Twilight. For many, many reasons.
Oh and just to let you know, I agree with you on one thing. All girls want a guy to love them just for existing. Or well, girls who are hopeless romantics like myself. (: That's just about it.
~Nicole
Yes, that is why Twilight is a Mary-Sue story. She's just a stand in for the reader who wants a perfect guy to love them.
Let me break it down shortly. Smeyer and Bella have brown hair. Smeyer and Bella have brown eyes. Smeyer and Bella have pale skin. Smeyer and Bella come from Arizona. Smeyer and Bella have heart shaped facial structures. There's probably more but those are the ones off the top of my head.
So as all of you should get that Bella is Smeyer's Mary-Sue and Twilight is Stephenie Meyer's wish list.
I've just read the first part of ''Twilight'' and watched the film. I know, why did this book became so popular. It has story, which is not ordinary, interesting. It also shows, how it is hard to fight with evil in the soul. And: attraction of this story in one thing! Bella is not very special person. She is just a girl. And Edward loves her and he is a real gentleman! And we (girls) all find part of ourselves in Bella. We want, that we would be loved just because we exist.
We wish it.
It was my opinion about this book.
I'm on the same page. Everyone's ranting about it, but... it's not that great. I mean, it was cute, but not fantastic. In fact, my friend told me how depressing the second book is, and why do I even need to be reading that? That's just stupid. So. I do not like Twilight.
I've only read the first book.
As most people round here think, I don't think it deserved even a quarter of the popularity it got. I don't hate it, but I think it's just a waste of time. The characters are underdeveloped, there are heaps of 'dragging' bits...jeez.
Haha. Good one!!!
Really, cause to me the plot was very dumb
I mean she spent way to much time on getting a date with Edward, and the dance, and left so little for the action, which was the only slightly bearable thing in my eyes.
And the changing vampires Is not that good in my eyes, Its one thing to tweak them a bit like say instead that they die in the sun, they lose there power or something, or maybe When they bit someone they don;t make them a vampire unless they want to. But she totally changed them, every thing that made a vampire a vampire was gone. She should have just changed the name of the them and called them, well can;t think of a good name right now. Werewolves, okay sort of. Instead I would have made something more like, the native Americans had ancient tribal magic, or something like that, and this allowed them to transform at will. If she did those I would have been fine with the drastic change.
Also next some changes to the general writing, cut down in the description.
People can deal with that, let us have some imagination of what they look like. But what you do need is to develop characters, have Bella slowly, with Edwards help, think better of her self, and become less klutzy as a result, but still have some insecurities, and make her klutzy when nervous. Make the other Cullen's less welcoming in a short period. Slowly have them welcome her, because of Edward and her love growing, and still have them not fully accept her, have more than one not like her. And develop the secondary too. Make hints that they will be becoming more major later, have them change a bit to, slightly though, to make it so they ave started changing, then it continues in the next book.
Yeah I'm done, for now though.
Asxz: This was not directed at you soloy, but I was using the stuff you said.
crazy miths made them fun, and the fact that they are so incredibly overused in fiction now, made the "Our vampires are difrent" nothing that original.
I would be much more impressed if she found a way to make the old miths work.
Also, Ed was a mix between too creepy and unbearably bruting, and the avatar of Joseph Smith.
If we take in account how obviously stephen meyers is in love with Bella Sue, I honnestly think that is something for one to concern himself over.
On another note, the one part of the story it trully felt original was the one where I don't remember who (was it Ed?) saw something so horrible he ponders ripping his brain and pouring into a vat of blech, considering his need to forget what he saw to outweight the probability of brain damage.
(Oh how I understand you, what's-your-face)....
I think that twilight is good - and I'm not one for romance!
I wasn't too bothered about the words 'stunning' and 'dazzle', as the plot made up for it. I think what all of you 'Twilight-haters' out there think is that the book was stupid bacuse of the way it was written, and the way that she made Edward look like an angel. I really think that Twilight was good bacause of the plot, and the way that she twisted the vampires and warewolves to suit her book, giving us a ew view of he crazy myths that people made up thousands of years ago. By the way - I still think that the 'I don't get burned in sunlight, I just shine like a diamond' thing is stupid, but that's about it... and the fact that everyone gets into huge debates over Warewolves vs. Vampires! I never once heard of the competition between the two untill I read twilight...
Twilight and the mormon failpires, in their eternal clash against the pedowolves
No, you're perfectly healthy if you didn't like them.
I thought I was the only one who considered these books a bore. Honestly, I don't get it why people are so crazy about them. In my opinion, they suck.
It's good to know more people think the same as me
I thought I was the only person who found Twilight, New Moon (pt.2), Eclipse (pt.3) and Breaking Dawn (pt.4) incredibly lame, dull and boring.
To tell you the truth, I only got halfway through Twilight, and found it such a bore I started to read random bits, skip ahead chapters, you know- then I watched the movie (which in my very own opinion SUCKED as much as the book). I also read random bits of New Moon, Eclipse & BD but I fell asleep reading them! Literally.
So, yeah, I guess I'm pretty anti-twilight.
I don't get it why everyone's so crazy about it- it's not a masterpiece, can't be compared to the good ol' classics, which are really the books I like.
Good to know I'm not alone!
Yes, I avoid it as well. I created the contest. I hope people join, I always love to see what people come up with ^^
Anyone and everyone is welcome to join, it's called Book Bashers Welcome, join if you'd like.
I will probably participate in the contest as well xD
You are quite right, I definitely agree. I've just gotten sick of the,"Eww, that book is lame." kind of feedback. If My books were bashed like that I'd kind of feel unaccomplished. But, that doesn't mean I would give up. I would love to become a writer when I'm old enough, because I've wanted people to see what I see. I dream that one day people will understand why i am the way i am. But, then again humanity is going back to the apes so I guess i may never experience achievement.
...I just avoid the damsel in distress story idea when I can; which is 98% of the time I write. I work with concepts that focus much more on the primal side of man, when he loses control of himself. Or at least, I'm starting to move in that direction....
But you should try that contest anyways to give people a challenge.
and just so I can have a final word on Twilight in general; I don't envy the author. I respect her as an accomplished writer, which is something I am not at the moment, although I might get there someday. But on a personal level, these books seriously annoy me. How many girls read these kinds of books, and they start thinking about having sex with vampires? For that matter, how many guys watch movies like 300 and think they're badarses sudenlly and can beat anyone up? While these ideas and tales are cool, (and I'll go as far to say Twilight's probably cool, although I've not read it and don't have the desire to do so.) it has to be remembered that in the end, most of these kinds of tales are not really anything other than entertainment. It takes real work to make something art.
And quite honestly, from the sound of it, Twilight is not "art" per-se. Then again, the same could be said about a lot of literature. But I'm one of those people who'd like to push it a little further, try to take stories and concepts a bit further than the typical damsel-in-distress sequence, or the 'save the world in twenty-four hours' kind of story. Am I being realistic in thinking that I can write better than people who've been writing those stories? Of course not. But maybe someday, I'll come up with something that will reinvent what makes a story worth reading.
You never know. Anyone on this site could be that writer that makes reading popular again. It's just a matter of time before we find out, I suppose.
So if you guys are so sick of the damsel in distress stories why don't you try to make a story without a hero to save the day. Hmm, maybe I should make a contest for that, then let's see how hard you found it to do. It just seems like people bash and bash these poor books. I feel sorry for them, what is funny is that I'd still read these books over and over again. I'm way into fantasy, but I guess many of us have jealousy for these books as muffin stated. I just hope you people don't end up bashing my books as much as you bash twilight, hp, eragon. I mean really don't you have better things to do.
I'm probably going to try that contest idea, because you all act as though you can do better. I'm sure you can but i want to see :]
-goes to work on contest-
My friends are like that too - they talk about it every single day. Don't get me wrong, I didn't dislike the books when I first read them but now the hype has gotten too much and I'm kind of sick of them. I've read the first three but I'm avoiding the last one since I'm not really bothered now. They're good for some light reading but definitely don't deserve the title of 'Bestest Book Ever!!!!111!!!" that some fangirlies give them.
Me too! All my friends are Twilight fanatics or weirdos as I like to call them.
Sheesh. They talk about it EVERY day! I don't know what the big deal is about. Just another damsel in distress story. Always Edward to the rescue! Yeah. Just sharing my opinion.

Lets face it. harry potter. Eragon. twilight. a serious of unfortunait events(it never got half as big as the other 3 unfortunitly) there have been others, and there will be more.
with popularity, comes hate. espicially with this site, I think at least a bit of hate is generated from jelousy. I mean who doesn't want to think they can write better then some author whos raking in the money from their books? Who doesn't want to think that it was just pure luck some every day person ended up rich from writing?
All writers have a certian... style to them. We all have it. If you want to find something to pick at about somebodys writing style, you can. I have isshues with my suspense building, and my intros are usually a bit draggy as I put in a LOT of descriptive detail, almost too much at times, espically at the beggining.
The truth of the matter is, we all will love some books, and hate others.
Twilight deffinitly was the type to suck you in, and keep you reading (except for a few chapters here & there). Vampires & werewolfs, may not be everybodys thing, but nobody asked them to be.
I personally read all four books in one week. (i waited until all of the books were out to read any of them). the fact of the matter is, things may be repetitive or weird, fallen together almost too perfectly, but I enjoyed them. then again, I was always a sucker for fantasy & always a sucker for romance.
ehhhh....the problem with escapism is look what it did to Cobain. That's my only problem with thinking escapism is a good thing. It only causes people to avoid the problems they need to be conquering, not running from.
As for twilight? I knew the moment it became popular an anti-twilight crusade would come along. I didn't like it when I first heard of it. These kinds of stories tend to be nothing but pure masturbation for the mind.
I hate to be a jerk like that, and I'll even give the author of twilight credit if she's got a great sense of writing...but that's all these kinds of stories ever amount to.
I was having this conversation with my friend who is a huge twilight fan (like even writes fan fic) *shudder*
I told her I thought meyer was just a mediocre writer.
My friend replied: yeah, well if she's so bad why does everyone buy her books and make them into movies?
I said: well, alot of people buy crack cocaine, but that's certainly not a good thing.
I don't really like it as well. Last year, since it was getting "all-the-rage," I bought the books and I wanted to see how was it like.
And it greatly disappointed me. I remember shaking my head as I put down the first book.
I didn't hate it. I just thought it was a little...weird? The guy sparkled, Bella "loved" that. I would find that really creepy! Edward was too perfect, Bella was too "I need you or I'll die," the most real person in that book was like...Charlie. But, he just got stupider as the series went on. Okay, I'm done.
It's only a "witchhunt" because of the popularity. Just because a book sells millions of copies and everyone's talking about it doesn't mean it's a good book. Twilight is just the new Eragon everyone can enjoy hating. Though, Youtube has a lot more videos of people burning Twilight than Eragon. :O
Yep Twilight definately has its issues.
I was swept along at the start, and I still hold it as a guilty pleasure. But after reading all four books in the space of a fortnight I'm laying off for a while.
I could rant forever about Meyer's writing style but at the same time, she is out there. She has an audience and she's "living the dream," unlike the rest of us would be writers.
Bottom line:
Twilight= escapism = good
But I am sick to death of Twilight spoofs and the Meyer witchhunt on this sight.
My Twilight-obsessive-phase is over. I still kind of like it, but I don't like it as much as I used to a few weeks ago.
Maybe it's because the first time you read (at least in my case), it's about the general content, and only after a few times of rereading, you notice the details.
I have to agree with Incognito Temptation about the repetition of words, and the overall ... well, shallowness of the characters. True, I didn't notice it the first time around, but now I think neither Edward nor Bella have depth to their character, and their behavior starts to annoy me a lot.
Twilight makes me weep for the future of literature.
All you need to do is throw hot guys and a cheesy romance at the page.
Plus some kind of supernatural aspect.
There you go. Bestseller.
Twilight was so stupid.
It wasn't well written and the movie was rediculous.
I can't believe people are so obsessed with it.
yes it was terrible, i hated it to.
there is an anti-twilight group here if you want to join it, here's the link.

No need to start a new thread, I think there are already a few for Twilight.
Twilight isn't as good as it was when I first read it ... two years ago. But I learned to dislike it as I read on and on. That series is indeed nothing compared to the Vampire Chronicles, yet the Vampire Chronicles are indeed based for a different audience. There is only a little bit of romance and so forth but if you want a twist on the vampire existence, the Vampire Chronicles are a great read.
I also found in Twilight, Stephanie Meyer over used words like 'stunning', 'dazzle', 'god-like', and 'icy'. Twilight certainly wasn't as well written as I thought it was when I first starting reading it. I think people liked it because it was written differently, almost 'refreshing', compared to other novels.
You'll find a large anti-Twilight club here. I hate Twilight, but I don't want to start another debate (there ate tons of threads like this)

My advice? Go read Anne Rice's vampire novels.
