near enough my first chapter i am working on, tell me what you think guys!
I felt like ice cold water had slipped down my spine, and that needles were stabbing my hands and head. I just stared at his sky blue eyes, as they scrapped over me and his lips let out a harsh laugh that bounced off the walls and the laugh felt like it had punched me in the stomach. My wrists were raw from the rope and how I had managed to snap free, but not before they cut into my wrists. My head felt light and dizzy, I was surprised I was still standing. “Well, well, well, it looks like we have a little heroine in this plot of this unfolding story … how did it feel to unleash that power?” His words had a harsh scent; I could no longer concentrate on what his next movements would be. All I wanted to do was sleep … and sleep was good. “Overwhelming isn’t it? You were that naive to think you could just use up your power at once and not have a side effect.” He pulled a chair out of the darkness and sat down on it, his eyes studying me as I tried hard to keep my balance. I felt my eyelids become heavy; it was becoming harder to fight. I don’t know why but I had to stay awake, but to stay awake was to feel all this pain … how long would this pain last? I let my eyes slip closed and that’s when I let my guard down.

Chapter one
I was in a dark room and it was hazy, I pushed my hands out in front of me trying to wipe away the white mist but it wouldn’t move, like it ceased to exist. I moved forwards pacing my steps; sticking my feet out like a blind person, lost. I felt a glistering light pass through my eyes, it looked so beautiful and pure I was sure this is what I had come for. I reached my hand out and as I did, a piercing noise split into my ears, it was agonising and I was ripped away from the light. I tried to claw back to it, begging for it to come closer. I jolted and my eyes flew open. I was looking at my bedroom, everything was still and perfect besides my alarm that was playing some horrible heavy metal teen music. I slammed my hand on it and it shut off, giving my mind peace. I pulled myself out of bed, as soon as my bedroom door swung open. My mum stood in her work uniform and her black hair was scrapped back into a tight bun. I saw her glasses resting on her jacket pocket, she had never liked wearing glasses she preferred her contacts. “Annika, I’m going to be late coming home tonight, there’s lasagne in the fridge and don’t get to bed late please.” She pulled a smile and her dimples appeared. I pushed my hair out of my face, “I won’t I promise.” I managed a smile back but it felt forced.
She looked me up and down as if analysing me, I felt her stare stab everywhere on my body, “Mum, I’m fine really.” I answered turning my back on her and straightened out my bed. “I know sweetie, I’m just worried after your dad … well … you know where I am if you need me to call and I promise I won’t go all psychiatrist on you at all. I am still your mum.” I felt her hurry to get to the end of her sentence after she mentioned dad. My stomach squeezed itself and I felt my palms being to prickle at just the memory of him. I looked into the mirror just above my bed, I smiled towards my mum. “I’m fine, I’ll see you tomorrow.” I answered and with that she nodded and turned on her heels. I waited for the front door to shut to, before I fell back onto my bed. My eyes shot to the picture of me and my dad which was pinned to my mirror. His blonde hair was whipped back in the wind and the sea was lapping around his ankles, he had a smile on his face and he was pointing straight to the camera. I clung to him like a frightened animal; my sunhat was too low over my eyes for the camera to see my reaction. I was hunched up in his arms just watching the sea. I could still smell the sea filling my nostrils and I remember the flash of the photo that was took too early before I could lift my head and wave towards my mum. I had felt safe in my dad’s arms; it felt like it was me and him against the world. No one could break the connection I had with him, except someone did. Oh the irony of the whole event.
I climbed into my ford fiesta; I couldn’t for the life of me remember why I begged mum to buy the car for me. It took effort alone to get it to come to come to life, and a lot of money to keep it running. I’m still in debt, as I haven’t even managed to pay off the garage bills yet and having no job doesn’t help. I reversed off my drive taking care not to run Mrs Salem’s cat over again … it’s like he materialises right under the wheel either that or he’s on a suicide mission. My car eventually reached the main road and I flicked my tiny radio on letting the latest pop tune blast out, lucky for me it wasn’t Justin Bieber this time. I let my black curls tangle and fly about in the wind as I drove down the familiar lane.
Eden Street had large trees that grew out and linked into each other over the road, causing nature to create an arc overhead. It brought instant shade from the beating sun, and I felt cool and calm. I took a sharp right and parked on the stone drive that had blue flowers sticking up. I always admired this drive. When I was a kid I used to brush away the stones to try and find the hidden buds and help them grow. “About time, I just got asked to empty the cat litter.” I pulled away from the daydream and looked up at my friend as she climbed into the car. She threw her bag into the back seat and huffed out air from her slim lips. Her blue eyes were cut off from sight as her eyelids closed. “I swear I have a migraine.” Alexis, one of the most dramatic friends I have. She rubbed her fingers on the sides of her head in a smooth steady rhythm, I supressed a laugh as much as I could. “You do know that you go way overboard with most things, right?” I asked turning the ignition on, I reversed out of the drive slowly while waiting for an answer. “This is not the time Ann, I have to baby sit my brother tonight instead of working and I have a Spanish exam. I am not made to function through this stress.” She tilted her head back and let the cool breeze wash over her face and her blonde hair. Her eyes emerged from the darkness and looked me once over before turning her head to the view as we came onto the main road. “You’re the only person I know not to have stress. Why are you perfectly calm about everything?” She threw her arms up and they fell back down into her lap. “Lucky … I guess.” I certainly didn’t feel lucky.
I walked into History and stopped dead at the door, on the white board was “twenty paged essay, opening paragraph and introduction.” I had completely forgotten I had an assignment to do. Alexis joined me at my side, “Oh goody, I’m going to get cramp in my wrist also.” She hissed. I took my seat besides Alexis and pulled out my history book, it was stuck with notes from previous lessons. Not all about history, some odd notes were from Alexis. “You’re not going to get cramp in your wrist at all, Alexis.” I answered rolling my eyes. “Speak for yourself; I am not made to write essays.” She said lowering her voice. She flicked to a clean page of her book and sat back in her chair. “Essays are meant to be about me.” She looked at me and winked playfully. I shook my head disapprovingly but I couldn’t hide the smile from my face.
Mr Jay came storming into the classroom and slammed the door too, “If anyone in this room does not want to do history, get out now.” His brown eyes were piercing everyone in the classroom, his long muscular arm was pointing towards the door that was shut too. No one said a word or moved. Alexis slid down in her seat; she placed a hand over her mouth to conceal her words and her smile. “Clearly no one had sex last night.” She said while holding back a laugh. I smiled and turned back to the front but I realised when it was too late that it was the wrong decision. “Something you find funny Miss Opal?” Mr Jay’s voice bounced around my head daring my brain to come up with anything cleaver. “Nothing sir.” Slipped through my mouth and I cringed at how high my voice went. Mr Jay flashed a smile which was all teeth and was not meant to be friendly at all. He reminded me a lot of a shark with his white teeth. Alexis and I had joked how he didn’t need Christmas lights for his tree he just had to smile. “Well clearly there is, do you care to share it with the class Annika?” I swallowed; he was daring me to slip up and say something stupid just so he could ban me from this course. A course I had worked so hard to stay on, I was so determined I had stayed over school hours for two weeks just so I could finish my assignment and stay sitting next to Alexis.
“No sir, just discussing the essay.” I said coolly, but I felt every eye on me in the class room and I felt heat flush up my cheeks. He chuckled, an insane chuckle that sounded like he wanted to string me up by the throat. I slid down into my chair, hoping if I made myself as small as possible he would forget about it. The bell droned through the hallways and Mr Jay looked at his watch. “I’ve wasted ten minutes with you Annika, and for that your grade is going to drop.” A smile crept on his lips, he almost had a snake like quality to his looks and it destroyed that blonde hair rugby kind of guy look.
“Sir, you cannot do that! I have worked like hell to get that A!” I felt the blood fume inside of me, as anger was pushed through my veins. He couldn’t actually be serious! He turned his back on me and marched to the front of the board “well, now you’ve worked like hell to get a B.” his voice had a hint of annoyance to it but the smile demolished that he cared about my grade. “You should learn from this Annika and learn to shut up when being told.” He moved his mouse and the monitor burst to life. I felt like I had been ripped away from something that was important to me. “In fact,” Mr Jay straightened up and looked at me, his eyes sparkled with a brand new idea to torcher me with. “Seeing as you’d gladly backchat me, we will have a new seating plan.” He pulled a smile that reached his eyes. I opened my mouth in pure horror and the whole class moaned. “That’s out of order! You just can’t do that.” I blurted out. I was furious as his eyes trained on a piece of paper he quickly began to map out the room.
“There are a lot of things that you say I cannot do Annika.” He looked up just long enough for me to catch a glint in his eye before he returned to his sheet of paper. “Right, listen for your numbers.” Mr Jay counted random students from one to three and when everyone had a number he told us all to stand at the back. Alexis dragged her feet so they made a horrible squeaking sound that made me cringe. A pain shot through my head straight after and I began to massage the pressure points. “Pick up your feet Alexis! Right number ones sit down in rows one,” he pointed to a row with his hand “and row two.” Number ones slung there’s bags on the shoulders and moved each one muttering to their selves. “Right number twos, yes that includes you Alexis don’t try and hide. Sit in row one and then in row three.” I felt like Mr Jay should have German subtitles he reminded me much of a war lord condemning his soldiers to utter death. Alexis gave me an apologetic smile and sat down in row three on her own. “Right number three’s sit on row two, AH boy girl order!” he shouted as a girl tried to sit next to her friend. I slumped down into my chair next to a guy who had moved to our school a year ago. My eyes flashed to the side as I took in his brown wavy hair and his jaw line. His arms rested on the table, showing off the muscle underneath the skin. He wore a red t-shirt with the brand name printed onto one of his sleeves. His eyes flashed my way and they were a brown sort of gold colouring.
“This gives me a perfect opportunity to give your assignments!” Mr Jay said clapping his hands together and rubbing them causing a horrible sound to come from them, like rubbing sand paper on bare skin. “I want you to get to know your partner sitting next to you and I mean so you know their family history, I want to know any family diseases, passed on genes and ages they died at.” I raised my hand and I felt every eye fall on me, no doubt they already blamed me for moving everyone. Mr Jay looked at me “and yes Annika, this will be added to your original assignment which I want handed in by next month, any objections and I’ll make it two weeks.” He flashed a smile that reminded me a lot of the Cheshire cat. I let my hand fall down to my lap and the room gradually fill with noise as people began chatting. My partner however sat there staring straight forward.
I turned to him and smiled gentle, I was beginning to think he didn’t know English. “I’m Annika, what’s your name?” I asked pen poised at the ready so I could begin writing down. He turned towards me, his eyes looked me up and down and even though his face looked solem I would see a slight upturn in his lip. I stared at him waiting for an answer. But nothing came from his perfect lips; I bit down on the inside of my cheek why was he making this hard for me? “Name?” I asked again and I felt my head edge to the side. “You can call me Daniel.” He answered; his voice was smooth and addictive. I wrote Daniel down in my book. “Parents’ names?” I asked I felt like I was interrogating him. A smile flashed on his face briefly. “Isn’t that a bit personal?” I heard the laughter in his voice and it felt like he was laughing at me. I frowned and as I did the shooting pain came back into my head. I squeezed my eyes shut and rubbed my head gently. “Can you just answer the questions?” I asked opening my eyes. I saw him studying me carefully, like I was a bomb in his hands about to blow off. “Let me guess, Annika Opal, lives with … one parent … she works a lot, so your lonely when at home,” he smiled when he said lonely and I felt chills creep up my arm as if he was insinuating something. “What about you, one parent too?” I asked I felt I had a harder grip on my pen. How did he know so much about me in a short space of time? He smiled at me; it was becoming an annoying smile.
“Look if you’re not willing to cooperate,”
“Oh, I’m willing to cooperate with you. But can you handle my cooperation?” the smile never faulted from his mouth. I narrowed my eyes ever so slightly as I tried to figure out what he meant. The pain in my head begged to be paid attention too. My hand slipped into my jean pocket and I pulled out two Paracetamol. Swallowing them quickly without water I felt them slide down my throat at a slow pace. “I’m guessing a drug user runs in your family?” Daniel asked scribbling down on his book, I grinded my teeth together. “I have a headache, and I took two Paracetamol, what’s the big deal?” I snapped I didn’t like the fact how he knew I had one parent and that she worked a lot. He sat back in his chair, with his one sided grin. It felt like he got enjoyment from me being freaked out. “Do me a favour and meet me halfway, I cannot afford to lose that A!” I heard the tone of my voice after and it sounded like I was begging, I cursed myself. “Tell you what; you can meet me halfway by calling me.” He winked and stood up. “It’s not even the end,” the bell rung out cutting me off. He pulled his back off his chair, “I don’t even have your number how am I supposed to call you?” I asked shoving my book back into my back. He carried on walking ignoring my question. “Hey?!” I stood up and he turned around leaning on the door frame, his eyebrows raised as if say ‘yes?’
“I don’t have your number.” I repeated, I felt heat flush up my cheeks, I knew deep down that I was asking a guy for his number and it’s the first time I had asked. “Look it up.” there was no smile on his face at all as he turned his back and walked off. Alexis joined me at my side “compared to him, my partner seems like a great match.” I heard the sarcasm dripping from her words.

Well, this is difinitely an interesting story so far and I'm wondering where it will go from here. There is one thing that I have to point out though; have you ever read a book called Hush Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick? Chapter One of your story is eerily like it. If you've never read that book read Chapter One and see what I mean.
The prologue was a real attention grabber and I like how you don't say whether it happens in the future or has happened in the past.
- 'his lips let out a harsh laugh that bounced off the walls and the laugh felt like it had punched me in the stomach' I would change this so that it is two sentences (take out 'and the laugh' and replace it with a full sto and start the next sentence with 'It'). This builds more atmosphere.
- 'My wrists were raw from the rope and how I managed to snap free, but not before they cut into my wrists' Same here as the previous one, make it into two sentences to build atmosphere (take out 'and how' and replace it with a full stop).
- 'we have a little heroine in this plot of this unfolding story' It should be 'the' instead of 'this' (the first 'this')
- 'and not have a side effect' I would change this to 'and not feel the side effects' because this speaker seems more sure of what he is talking about, like he knows more then the girl does.
- 'and that's when I let my guard down' Great ending. Real suspense builder and awesome cliff hanger.
- 'I tried to claw back to it' Great verb choice. It shows how desperate she is to stay in her dream like place.
- 'Oh the irony of the whole event' I would take this bit out. Ann seems truly upset about her Dad's death (I presume he died), and this sentence breaks that.
- You have lots of commas and full stops that need to be added around so re-read your work and make sure all the grammar is correct. I'm afraid that there's too many to write them all in this review.
I also love you're character Alexis. I think she will become a favourite of any reader! Hope my review helps and, of course, any comments that aren't grammatical are my own opinion so feel free to ignore them if they don't suite your style, Midnight x
Alright, so, right off the bat, I'm not too sure about your prologue. Personally, I'm not a fan of them in general, and yours seems to confuse more than help. I'll admit, though, I liked the mood of your prologue and you lost that going into the chapter.
Don't forget to start a new paragraph every time someone talks, as a way to space it out.
This also moves just a tiny bit too fast for my taste. You don't seem to go into the characters thoughts or emotions, which makes it hard to for the reader to visualize the exact setting and what the characters are thinking. As the reader, I want to feel the boredom from her classmates seep from my computer.
I feel, though, that you have a solid start. Good luck and keep writing
