Uncle Sim had come back home and Grams had woken up. Turns out Carter is sleeping over. The tension between me and Grams is horrible. Izzy has gotten suspicious. It’s dinnertime and we were eating out in a diner called Buvette Scott. The food is pretty good so far. Carter was with us too.
Me, Izzy, Ave and Carter were sitting on one table and Grams, Tim, Aunt Martha and Uncle Simon were on another table.
I have sweet potato masala with tofu, cucumber, cashew and cilantro. It’s really good. I hadn’t realized how much I was starving until I had first taken a bite of it! The diner itself was really nice. It wasn’t all that fancy. Tiled floors, cashier, tables and chairs, etc.
Izzy nudged me, “Isn’t this so good?”
“Mhm, I’d die to eat another whole plate of this!” I said, taking another bite. Have you ever had that moment, when you eat that perfect bite in the perfect moment, and you just feel so happy?
I looked at the rest of the people who were in the restaurant, eating.
Carter looked behind me, his brown eyes wide. I gave him a questioning look, “Carter? What’s wrong?” he vigorously shook his head and looked straight down at his food and continued eating.
I looked behind me.
Big mistake.
There stood the one and only Raven Hill.
I almost spat out my food, “What in the heavens is she doing here?” I whisper-yelled at him. Why was even whisper-yelling? I don’t know. I felt safer that way. Carter just shrugged and continued eating, looking down at his food. I looked down into my food too. That was not like him at all. This girl, I swear, is dead.
“Oh, hi idiot!” A screechy voice said. I flinched. Oh no. She found us. Never mind, I’d rather die than kill that demon.
“Don’t you dare call my cousin that!” Ave growled.
“What will you do, stupid?” Raven hissed.
“I’ll snap you’re head off.” Ave snapped.
Carter still hadn’t looked up. “Hey, little brother.” she snickered, “I told you I’d follow you no matter where you go.”
Carter and Izzy whimpered. She was huddling in the corner of her chair. Somehow. “Leave him alone.” she said.
“Raven Cross Hill, I’m pretty sure that’s enough.” Uncle Sim said. He had walked up from behind her and had given me signs indicating that he was going to stop her and telling me to stay calm.
Raven whirled around, her black hair flying this way and that, “Um, oui, uh, pardon.” she ran out of the restaurant and everyone’s eyes were on her.
“That girl is dangerous.” Uncle Sim started, when she had left, “Never ever talk to her. Or contact her. She’ll follow you anywhere, anytime.”
“Okay. But she was being such an –” Ave started, but Uncle Sim cut him off.
“Enjoy the rest of your dinner,” Uncle Sim said simply, “We’ll leave in about ten minutes.”
We all just nodded, still scared. How dangerous could this Raven Hill girl get? I shuddered at just the thought. I needed to stay out of her way. Whether I was at home or in the Arctic.
Me, Izzy, Ave and Carter finished out food and cleaned up. I grabbed my purse and Izzy took hers – I thought it was adorable because she’s only ten and… It’s just so cute.
A few moments later, we all silently left the restaurant and piled into the minivan. Nobody talked during the ride home. I didn’t blame any one of them.
So much had happened today, that all of a sudden, I felt exhausted and I just wanted to sleep. But once I had reached my bed in Izzy’s room, I didn’t want to sleep. I thought over what had happened today.
My mother doesn’t want me. Raven is dangerous. I have no more friends. I sighed and turned over onto my left side. What did a do? Does God hate me? Did I do something to upset him? I’m pretty sure not.
I want motherly love. And fatherly love too. I get it from Grams… But I guess you can’t blame a kid for wanting attention from her parents. Or mother in this case, if she’s alive.
I looked at the time. It was already two in the morning. Izzy was softly snoring. I didn’t sense anyone else awake. I don’t deserve to live. I’m sick of my life.
I slowly got up and felt something wet go down my cheek. Tears. I was crying. So much has happened in just one day that I can’t hold it anymore. I need to do something to release all the pain that was happening inside me. And quick. My life is ruined forever now. There’s no reason to let it continue.
I looked at the vase that was sitting on the little table in the hallway. Blood red roses. Thorns and all. What if I pricked my finger on that and my blood continuously came out and no one could save me?
I walked down the stairs, taking each step as carefully as possible, not wanting to make a sound. I went to the kitchen and opened the drawers in which Aunt Martha kept all her sharp knives. I wanted to scream at myself, pull my hair, and do the worst things possible. But I didn’t. A tear slipped down my cheek. Why? I quietly sobbed and when I realized that tears were coming out fast, I wiped them away.
I took one out and held it against my wrist, my hand shaking.
What am I doing?
I pressed it harder. My heart was beating faster and faster by the second. I stopped. What if someone really cared about me?
No. If my mother doesn’t care, why would anyone else?
But what if someone feels as if they feel guilty of my death?
Nobody likes me.
A small voice spoke in my head. Julia, come into your senses. What are you doing?
I don’t know, so don’t judge me, Voice In My Head.
Thump. Thump thump. Thump. I thought that was my heart pounding, but nope.
Footsteps. Who’d be up right now?
I quickly hid under the table, without a noise, taking the ridiculously sharp knife with me. I’ll just have to attempt suicide down there. Suddenly, a thought came into my head. Grams…
Whoosh!
The water from the sink was flowing, making me forget about my grandmother. It just made me realize that that’s how my blood is going to gush out when I rip open my forearm with this damn knife. Julia, stop acting as if your life is a movie. You can’t just do that! The voice spoke again.
I pressed the tip of the knife – the sharpest point – against my wrist. Harder this time. I winced, “Ouch!” Blood trickled down my arm.
“Huh?” The voice said. I recognized it as Tim.
“You heard nothing.” I whispered. I guess it worked because Tim said okay and walked away. Then his footsteps stopped.
“Wait, what?” Tim said, walking towards the table. I flinched, pressing the knife so hard against my wrist that it started to bleed more. Tim lifted the table sheet and gasped when he saw me, “Jules!” He exclaimed; shock was written all over his face.
“What are you doing?” he said softly, taking my hand and pulling me out. I didn’t budge, so he came under the table with me. “What happened, Julia?”
I started crying, “Tell me. Did I do anything bad?” I sobbed.
Tim embraced me in a hug, “No, Julie. Who said that?”
“No one. My mother isn’t with me and she hates me! My father is dead! And Grams is my grandmother and I have no friends and Raven is a crazy idiot and my life just turned upside down…” I cried. Tim started stroking my hair.
“Shh…” he said, “It’s fine. Who told you this?”
Tears were rolling down my cheeks as I tried to find my voice again. When Tim realized I couldn’t, he kept quiet and continued soothing me. I felt as if someone else was in the kitchen with us, but I was too upset to even care.
Finally, I whispered, “I have no reason to live.”
“Don’t think that. If you feel down, just talk to someone or write it down.” he said. I nodded and continued crying.
“But promise you’ll keep this in between us?” I let go of him and held out my pinky.
Tim promised. “But only if you promise not to do…” he gestured towards the knife and took it from me. I nodded.
“Promise.” I leaned back into him and broke into tears again.
They’re right. Thirteen is an unlucky number. Or age, in my case.
A while later, at five in the morning, I had finally stopped bawling my eyes out and had went to bed. I kept poor Tim awake the entire night because of my stupid suicidal thoughts. I’m such a baby.
+++
“JULES!” Izzy screamed, “WAKE UP ALREADY!”
I moaned and rolled onto my belly, “Leave me alone.”
“GET UP!” she yelled into my ear.
“Leave her alone,” Tim said, coming into the room, “She’s tired and she’s having a few bumpy days.”
“Aww. But we were gonna go riding!” Izzy whined. Tim rolled his eyes and left, shutting the door behind him.
“I barely know how to ride.” I mumbled, rolling over to my back.
Izzy grinned, “I’ll teach you! Let’s go!” she pulled me off the bed and dragged me into the bathroom. “I’ll get your clothes. You freshen up.”
I groaned and did as asked. A few minutes later, Izzy knocked on the bathroom, “I have your clothes!” she said. I opened the door to let her in. She had taken out a soft green tee-shirt. And gave me white breeches, “I brought these for you. The shirt will bring out our eyes.” she beamed.
I swear to god this family is as rich as heck. I hugged her. It was glad to know someone cared, “Thanks.” I looked at the time and let go of her, “I should finish getting ready.” She nodded and left the bathroom.
Once I was done changing, I went down the stairs and ate breakfast with Ave, Tim, Aunt Martha and Grams. Uncle Sim was out at work again. Tomorrow, he was off from work. The rest were coming riding with us.
We had pancakes for breakfast. Aunt Martha was sitting at one end of the table with Grams at the other. They were talking about something related to sewing. Me and Ave were on the right side. Tim and Izzy were on the left.
Ave nudged me, “You seem upset.” he whispered. I shook my head.
“I’m good.” I smiled at him. He nodded but didn’t seem convinced.
I continued listening to Izzy babble on and on about what horse she was going to ride. And what she was going to do.
“I’ll ride Major! Or no… How about Rockette? But then there’s Minny too… But she’s a mother-to-be, so not allowed.” Izzy took a breath and took a bite of her food. I was done already. And so was Grams and Aunt Martha.
“WAIT!” Izzy yelled. Everyone looked at her.
“Izzy, I’m pretty sure you’ve been taught manners.” Aunt Martha said sternly. I giggled.
“Julia.” Grams looked at me. Izzy smirked.
“Anyways… Like I was saying…” I tuned her out and leaned over to Ave.
“When are we leaving?” I whispered.
“After breakfast.” he said, “And, I’m done! Me and Julia are going to go start the car. We won’t drive, though. Promise. We’ll probably get killed for that.”
I laughed, “Let’s go.” I took Grams’ phone – I had an idea – and slipped on my boots. Ave got the car keys and ran out the door to the front of the garage.
He opened the passenger seat door for me, and I went in. He sat on the driver’s seat and started the engine. Ave turned on the radio and listened to some music on low volume.
I turned on Grams phone and put in the password. I went to contacts. She said she still calls her. I typed in: Anthea.
“Ave, can you turn the volume down a bit? I need to do a call.” I said.
Ave grinned, and turned it off completely, “You sound so professional. I’ll get out so you can have privacy.”
I smiled at him, “Thanks.”
I looked back at the phone and called Anthea Portman. My mother.

Hello Liberty I really liked this chapter i wonder what her mother will do when she finds out that Julia called her what if her mother dose not remember her that would be heart breaking. I can't believe that Raven Follows her younger brother Carter around that's super weird and that's kind of creepy. Also what if Julia's mother dose not pick up the phone or something bad had happened to her or if she was at the hospital very sick. You kind of had skiped a lot of story when i went to read this i was making sure that i was reading chapter seven you went from Julia saying "Wait.What.Grace?" and then their at a diner. Will Julia's mother pick up the phone and remember her Daughter Julia or will she not and think she stole Grams phone and call the police on her well i guess i will find out in the next chapter.
Hey, Liberty!
This chapter was great. Not much to say, really. I think the flows really improved since the first few chapters! Which is awesome! And also just when I think I can't relate with Julia anymore, you bring in food.
AND RAVEN???? HOW????
I agree with EternalRain about the next scene.
And I'm at the edge of my seat to see what happens with Julias mom. Seriously though, this part is the part where I relate to Julia the most so far. (I know that I've said that so many times, but I just wanna say) The need for answers is something I can totally understand!
Keep on doing what you love, chase your dreams, and have a great day!
Thanks for the review!
Hi Liberty! Sorry, I’m a bit late! I read this late last night but was a bit too tired to review, so here I am right now.
Okay, so, wow, a LOT happened! Raven’s here??? She’s really got everyone spooked, so I wonder what it is she’s doing. It’s also kind of weird how she managed to follow Carter. Did she fly on a plane herself? She almost seems like she has supernatural powers. It leaves a lot to be uncovered!
I am so excited for this mother drama. I wonder what it’s going to be like when Julia makes the call. It was pretty sneaky of Julia to steal Grams’ phone, but I like that grit it adds to her character. She’s desperate.
Now - the suicide thoughts scene. I’m a little unsure about this. Suicide is a really heavy topic and usually something that isn’t sprinted upon. Julia hasn’t had many signs of depression/depressing thoughts/previous suicide thougts and the attempted cutting was really, really shocking and while definitely added to the emotional depth of the scene, it felt really out of place. I really liked the bit where Tim comforts her, though, and I like how we understand the pain Julia is in - but perhaps it might be more affective in a different way? Maybe she could simply be crying really loud, she goes down for a drink of water, and then hides. Just a suggestion! (Also, For now, I’m going to change the rating to 12+ and mature, because of the suicide attempt scene. Just to keep ratings appropriate for young members!).
Anyway, even if you don’t decide to change the scene - totally cool - I agree with Jabber! I’d love to see more emotions so we can almost feel the agony Julia is going through. A stronger emotional description allows readers to connect more - emotionally - with a reader as well as relate to them!
This chapter had a lot of great moments. Izzy’s little talk about the horse’s was so cute. I hope we get a riding scene sometime down the line! And I definitely have to know how this phone call turns out.
Peace!
~ EternalRain
Thanks for the review! It's totally cool if you were late. No problem. Also, thanks for changing the 12 thing for me.
I dunno how you did it, but whatever. I guess mods have supernatural powers
like Raven. Just kidding. No magic stuff happening here. Thanks again!I'M BACK. Sorry I'm a little later than usual, the holiday is keeping me busy this week.
Also sorry for any typos. My tablet keyboard is just not as responsive as a computer.
Gosh, now I'm super hungry. YES I HAVE, JULIA. I know of the infamous Perfect Bite.
WHAT. What's Raven Hill doing here?! WHY ISN'T SHE IN SCHOOL. And why doesn't Carter know about her being here?! WHAT IS GOING ON.
Okay that was weird. So Raven Hill walks into the restaurant, walks over to their table to taunt them, an then leaves the restaurant. I wonder why Raven is obsessed with tracking her brother?? That's kind of creepy. It's also very strange that even Uncle Simon knows she's dangerous. She's in middle school, and adults are warning the kids to stay away from her. I wonder what she's up to?! I wonder if police were involved in her lifetime?? SHE'S CREEPY.
And also Very Rude. Goodness, she's got a mouth on her. There is no reason to be that rude to people you hardly know. >:[
Omg only ten minutes to eat. because of Raven Hill. Who's already gone. SHOVEL IT QUICK.
Also it was kind of cute how Avery stood up for Julia, but Carter is like the exact opposite of when we first met him in the park. In the park, he seemed super confident introducing himself to Julia. I wonder why Raven gets him so... I don't know. He's suddenly a whimp. Avery is suddenly a badass WHICH IS UNEXPECTED. He is so protective of the people he loves, that's adorable.
Omg poor Julia.
So I had to read through the whole scene to understand what was happening. It would definitely help to dwell on the emotions a bit, to help capture the reader's heart and lead them through the whirlwind of thoughts Julia is going through. This could mean slowing things down a bit and taking your time in describing the scene and how Julia sees it, using specifics/details to explain what's going on through her mind. Suicide/depression is such a strong scene, it doesn't do it justice to rush through that kind of emotional roller coaster.
But gosh, I get it. That feeling when you have nothing left.
So Tim being here made me happy. I love how he almost just walked out after Julia said he heard nothing. Like, that is totally at teenage-boy thing to do. What surprised me was how... motherly he was under the table. That felt more like an Aunt Martha thing to do. Tim is very... motherly. Which surprises me 'cause he seemed very teenagery before, playing video games and not caring an ounce about people in general, just wanting to hang out with his friends at the park and ignore the guests, not very interactive with his guests 'cause he doesn't care about the idea of hosting at all (unlike Avery). So seeing him drop everything to sit with his cousin for hours under the kitchen table was very surprising to me.
That doesn't mean it's wrong, it's just a perspective of his character I didn't predict. Like there wasn't enough foreshadowing in his character for this scene to make sense for Tim. Like I said before, it made more sense for Aunt Martha or even Uncle Simon or Izzy or even Avery. Just not... Tim. BUT I LOVE WHAT HAPPENED BEFORE THE TABLE. So I don't want to like... remove this scene or anything. I just wonder if this is out of character, or if edits earlier on should be made to better explain Tim's character/personality to lead up to this point.
Omg Tim telling Izzy to back off is SO BIG BROTHER-LIKE AND I LOVE THIS.
D'awww Avery and Julia are such buds now, it's adorable.
Omg and he's so freaking polite too. He leaves her in the car to talk on the phone. Like... clearly Julia doesn't care or she'd have left instead. She probably wanted the company if anything. I'm also impressed she is feeling well enough to make this call, or at least... I'm surprised she doesn't feel down still. Somewhere along the way, she cheered up dramatically. I'd imagine she'd still feel so down that she thinks her one of her last chances at getting answers or contentedness is making this call.
She's calling her motherrrrrrr omg how is this going to go THIS CAN'T GO WELL ;_;
Thanks for the review! I'll make edits and notify you asap.
Thanks so much!
Hallo!Am here for a review. So i have been reading your novel ever since you started writing it.So far soooo good.I have been loving all the chapters. You kept the suspense good which made me crave for more info continuously so thats great.Especially since you dropped the bombshell about Julia's mom. That came out of nowhere.A really good plot twist.Your wordings, expressions and grammar are really well too.The plot of this story is quite well knit
But a few things that i felt should be more and were missing from overall the whole story are:
1)Descriptions:
I know this not the type of novel that offers too many descriptions since its her life and stuff but since this novel needs to win a competition so you need to somehow add situations that will offer some sensational descriptions.Like you could have described that park more or this resturant.Or you also could give us some gustatoty imagery about that. You also should have described that necklace more in the previous chapters since it seems like a big part of the story. The way you introduced it seemed quite abrupt
2)Emotions
This i feel like is greatly lacking in your story. You often resort to telling us rather then showing it.Now Julia is going through a terrible emotional roller coaster in her life but you haven't effectively showed her feelings yet.You mostly say that she was crying like crazy but you don't tell the situation of her heart like it was being ripped open or sth.For e.g When you wrote that she just came to know about her mother so that was a huge blow like whoa but you literally rushed through those feelings which made me feel it was not such a big deal for Julia.I am not saying you don't show emotions at all i am just saying it should be a bit more.
Now lets talk about the characters.I really love all the characters in the story. They are awesome and you really put your heart into imagining and writing all of them. Its crazy seriously how much your own personality and some life events are reflected in this novel but that kind of thing happens to every single writer.I also really admire the different personalities of each character. In some novels all the characters seem a like which makes it really boring.I am gonna give a view how these characters seem to the readers that i hope will help you polish them more and really commit to their own individual personalities:
Grams
:I absolutely love this quirky grams. She is not one of the typical grandmas. She is cool, understanding, free going and a real sweetheart.I don't think she needs sth more.Just keep up her wild swag.Julia
:She acts like a tough nut but inside she is really sensitive, emotional and gets hurt quite easily.I don't blame her, her life's(or you)been messing her up.She is really sweet and loves like everbody.I was like so sad about her friends though. What she needs is more strength and a teensy bit of typical gal stuff and if you don't want that you should tell more about her non typicalnessAvery
He is like so sweet and helpful.Quite a joker too really. You should add a bit more boyish acts of his life too. That could be anything from cheek to laziness to sport craziness or whatever you want.Carter
:He is supposed to be the clown right but is has not really shown that aspect. He should have cracked jokes and been the life of the dinner in this chap but nope.I wanna discuss the other chracters but dang am getting tired*ouch my hand*so i am just ending this i guess next time
This chap was really good.I totally enyoyed it.One thing though Julia cut her hand so shouldn't she bleed and require bandage and stuff.I missed that. Now i am super curious what is gonna happen when Julia calls her mom. That was a real cliffhanger.
Plzzz plzz don't hate me for this review and don't be offended.I just want to help.Your novel is gr8.There is always room for improvement.
Just a last suggestion Do not move too fast i know there is a deadline and all but still it is important to take the story slow.Explain and let the reader completely absorb all the glory.
Hope the next chap is out soon
Keep up the excellent work
PEACE OUT
Thanks for the review! It all helps very much. The description thing - I very much agree with. And yes, Carter kinda went non-clownish, so I better keep that personality in him, lol. Thanks again!
