“Grams, I need to talk to you.” I said.
We had gotten home, and everyone went their separate ways after lunch; fish and rice. It was three o’clock right now. Tim had fallen asleep. Izzy and Ave were playing ping pong downstairs in the basement. Aunt Martha was cooking – as usual.
I looked sternly into Grams’ eyes. She looked back in mine.
“Yes?” she said tiredly. I felt bad for waking her up, but I had questions. So many that now I was feeling stressed. Guess I didn’t dodge it. I internally rolled my eyes.
“Can I please know about the necklace?” I asked – my voice softer. She shook her head no.
I wasn’t giving up that easily. “Now leave, honey, please. You’ve interrupted my nap.” she said. I kept on staring at her. “Are you feeling well?” she pretended to freak out and placed her hand on my head. I held back my giggle and continued to stare at her. And so did she. We both stayed like that for a long time until Grams’ eye twitched and I burst into a fit of laughter.
Once I had calmed down Grams asked what I needed.
I looked blankly at her, “About the necklace… And also, why are we even here? We could’ve come in the winter break. Why now? Why so sudden?”
Grams looked guilty, “There’s a lot of stuff you don’t know about my darling.”
I fiddled with my fingers, “Like?”
Grams looked blankly at the wall behind me. “You know how your mother and father passed away?” I nodded. “Well, your mother left this necklace for you. And –” She said something really quickly and I didn’t understand.
“Um, what?” I asked, looking up at her.
“You’re not going to understand,” Grams sighed, “Maybe when you’re a bit more mature.”
“What do you mean?” I asked. “I’m going to get answers now, or…” I felt like crying. Why won’t Grams just tell me?
“They weren’t your parents. Well they are but not exactly.” she whispered.
“You’re funny.”
“I’m serious.” Grams looked back behind me at the light sky blue wall. “I don’t know who your father is. Your mother was obviously my daughter.” she said.
She frowned, “Hear me out first. I found you in the adoption center. I knew you were an angel when I first saw your beautiful green eyes. We also did a DNA test. I was so relieved to find out that you were my grand-daughter.” she said, and scratched the back of her head. “And that necklace… was my daughter’s. The one who ‘died’. She didn’t actually die. She’s still alive. But she’s just somewhere out in the world. She calls me once in a month…” Grams trailed off when she looked at me.
I was about to start howling with laughter. About to. Grams was looking at me sternly, “This isn’t a joke.”
My face fell, “Did she really leave me?” Grams nodded then held her arms out so I could cuddle in them. I didn’t. I didn’t let her talk either. All I did was leave.
It was 5:04 PM according to the digital clock in Izzy’s room. I sat down on her bed. Izzy wasn’t here, thankfully, or else she would have chattered non-stop.
Is it really true? Did my mother just leave me like that?
I got up and decided to look through my bag and get a different outfit to wear. I was going to shower first. I change my clothes a lot.
I didn’t let Grams tell me why we were here. Well, I’m mad at her so I’m not going to – but wait. She did nothing wrong. She took me under her care, so I guess I shouldn’t be mad at her?
Oh my goodness. There were so many questions. My head was spinning!
Ding-dong!
I stopped looking through my clothes and jogged down the stairs to the front door to check who it was outside. Izzy beat me there.
She opened the massive oak door and hid behind it. I gave her a questioning look and she just squeezed her eyes shut. Typical Izzy.
“Oh, hi Carter!” I smiled. Carter was standing there with his skateboard. His blonde hair was all messed up.
He smiled back, “Hey, is Ave home?” I nodded.
“Just a sec, I’ll go get him.” I ran upstairs into his room.
“Ave.” I said, knocking on his door.
“Yo.” he said from the couch in his room. Oh my gosh, he has a freaking couch in his room. He was playing video games with Tim.
“Carter came.” I said and looked at what game they were playing.
It looked very… Game-ish, I guess you could say. I saw that Izzy had left her spot from behind the door and had let Carter come in. The door was closed. I wandered into the kitchen and found Izzy and her mum there.
“Izzy, there you are!” I exclaimed, placing my phone on the kitchen counter.
“Where? On the ceiling?” Izzy questioned, looking up. The three of us laughed.
Aunt Martha stepped in and asked me if I wanted to help bake, “Nah, I’m good. I’ll just sit here and smell. Or taste-test.” I grinned. Aunt Martha rolled her eyes playfully and continued mixing the batter for the chocolate chip cookies.
I sat on the dining chair and reached for my phone. I unlocked it and went to all the text messages I had.
Ella: how’s the trip so far?
Maryam: Are you enjoying?
Maryam: What did you do?
Maryam: How was your flight?
Ella: when r u comin back?
Maryam: We miss you!!!!
Yeah, sure…
Ella: u never ignore our msgs!
Maryam: True, maybe she’s busy?
Ella: but I thought besties were never busy 4 each other
Huh, we’re besties? I bet Maddie listens to you – after all, she’s your new bestie.
Maryam: oh well
Ella: Juuuuuuuuliiiiiaaaaaa
Maryam: Jules, what happened?
Ella: r u ok?
Maryam: You’re scaring us, ya know!
All fourteen text messages from my exes. I’m never talking to them again. How about I block their account? But what if they want to apologize? What if they didn’t mean it? Oh my gosh. Today has been such a long day!
I sighed and flopped back into the chair. I want to scream. I want to kill someone right now! What is going on? Why does it seem as if my happy bowl has just been turned upside down? What did I ever do? Can I die?
I’ve never felt this way before. What am I saying? Oh my.
“I’ll be right back.” I mumbled. I got up from my seat and went back up into Izzy’s room. I had read somewhere that if you scream into your pillow, it helps get rid of stress. And so does crying. But I’m sure they didn’t mean to encourage crying.
I took a hold of the pillow I was using and shoved it into my face as hard as possible and screamed as loud as possible. It was kind of muffled. But I guess not much, because Tim – who was still in Ave’s room – came in and asked me if I was okay. I said yes and he left. I set the pillow so that it didn’t look like someone just screamed in it and went to the bathroom.
I sat on the edge of the bath tub and let the tears flow out of me like waterfalls.
What did I ever do to deserve this?
Why does my mother – Anthea Portman – not want me?
Why did Maddie take my spot?
Are Ella and Maryam even my friends? Am I a good friend?
How come Carter has the same last name as Raven? Shouldn’t they be living in the same country? Let alone house? Hill is a pretty common last name, so whatever.
As the tears came running down, I held the necklace. The lace was real gold and the jewel that was hanging from it was a beautiful sapphire color. It was the real gem. I’m a to-be-scientist, I know this stuff.
Why was Grams so upset about me wearing this necklace?
Does Aunt Martha somehow know about this necklace? Grams was talking to her about it.
Why did we really come here? Now that I know about my mother, I know for sure that we aren’t just here for vacation. And you don’t take vacation after the first day of school.
I heard a knock on the bathroom door. I quickly wiped away my tears and looked at myself in the mirror. I was a sobbing mess. I’ll just have to convince whoever is out there that I’m fine and I was not crying. I opened the door.
“Yes?” I said as cheerily as possible. Which wasn’t very successful.
It was Carter. “Oh, um… Is Ave in here? Or Izzy? Or Tim?” he asked.
I shook my head, “No, why?”
He scratched the back of his head, “We were playing hide and seek and I haven’t found any of them and it’s been – what – fifteen whole minutes?”
Have I been crying that long?
“They’re not here.” I shook my head. “Hey, you’re last name is Hill right?”
He nodded.
“Um, do you have a sister?” I asked, looking down.
“Uh… Eh-ehm, uh, were you crying?” he asked. I glared at him. He was dodging the question.
“What is wrong with you? I ask you a simple question and you ignore me?” I yelled. I clamped my hand over my mouth. What is going on with me? “S-sorry…”
He shrugged, “It’s fine. And, yeah. I do have sisters. Seventeen year olds.” I gawked.
“She’s the freaking devil!” I whisper-yelled.
He nodded, looking down, “I know. And before you ask why we don’t live together, it’s because our parents are divorced. Mother, Grace and Raven live in Chicago. Me and Dad live just across the street.”
I nodded.
Well that’s one question crossed off my list.
Wait, what? Grace?

Hello Lib this was a awesome chapter i really liked how you wanted us to think that carter will do something and be like Raven well that's good because i don't know why they would be friends with carter if he was mean to them or others. This chapter answered a lot of my questions like why there was a necklace in the first place that was a good idea to do for a chapter. Maybe you could talk more about Carter's family in the next chapter so we know who Grace is unless you mentioned her earlier in the story because Julia seems to know Grace. The chapter was a cliffhanger but its good to keep your readers hooked on to the story i cant wait to read chapter 7 I have never been this hooked on to a book like this in a long time.
Thanks so much! I can't wait to see your thoughts on the next chapter.
Great chapter! Also, PLOT TWIST!!!
I loved the flow of this chapter, and I love that Carter asked Julia if Izzy and Tim were in her room. I laughed out loud at that part, and I still don't know why!
But really, I know in the past chapters I've said that I relate to Julia, but now, oh my gosh, she feels so real to me, and I relate to her so, so, so, so much. Best friends hanging out with your bully? Check. Wanting to scream into your pillow and cry? Check. The outcast? Check. Fear of being left behind, questioning if your a good friend? Check, and Check!
I don't have much else to say about this chapter, so onto the next one! Keep on writing, and I hope I'm not spamming your notifications with all these reviews and likes!
Lol, it's fine. Thanks for the review!
Woop woop Happy Review Day!
Sorry this review is a bit late! I’ve been a little busy haha.
Anyway so WOW! A lot was revealed. I like how Julia addressed the whole why-are-we-here-so-early thing, although If I were her I’d probably be curious about that from day one haha.
But that twist though!!! So her mother leaves her... wild. I do think Grams’ explanation was a little all over the place - so Grams adopts her granddaughter ?? Accidentally or intentionally? If accidentally, that is an INSANE coincidence lol! But yeah, yikes, Julia has all the reason to be mad. Especially since this has been kept from her for her whole life - I would feel an intense feeling of distrust!! I wonder why it’s been kept secret so long? Why hasn’t Grams told her before? Interesting...
Woooah okay so I love these questions Julia was asking for herself - I do this all the time to sort my thoughts out haha - but this one was just like what??? It felt unexpected and hadn’t been addressed previously - maybe when Julia first meets Carter she realizes he looks similar to Raven? Otherwise, it seems like she’s jumping to conclusions about them having the same last name because “Hill” isn’t too rare! And what a coincidence that Raven and Julia go to the same school! That’s awesome.
I like how we got a bit more Carter backstory. I wonder how his parent’s divorce - especially the extreme separation from his sister - has affected him. I would be devastated to have to be separated (my parents are divorced but only live about 15 mins away haha!). Anyway, I love these realistic events here that help shape his backstory.
Loved how we approached a few more answers in this chapter as well as seeing Julia’s frustrations with both her newfound parental discovery and her friends. I hope she comes to terms with them, but I’m not sure if she will!
Hope this helped!:)

This helped very much. Thanks for the review.
So, I feel your writing style has changed since the last chapter. Sorry, that didn't make sense. I think this is pretty good and YOU COMPLETELY GOT MY EMOTIONS I LOVE IT AND AUGH I'M NOT GOING TO CRY IN PUBLIC!
I love the twists and depth this story has and I know I've been more focused on your wording and flow and style in my past reviews. i think this is amazing and I congratulate you on just being able to grab my feels.
The only critique I can offer is watch the flow, your wording and the meaning of this book is amazing. Also, try to do more character development. I think that will give this even more depth.
I hope this made sense,
Jade
Thanks for the review!
HELLO! Sorry this took so long.
omg these two are adorable.
GRAMS. so SASSY.
YES. BINGO.
Everything has led up to this point. There's about to be a Moment here and this is perfect. I'm so excited for what I'm about to read. Julia's asking all the questions on the reader's mind.
WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT
omgomgomgogmomg
okay so Grams unintentionally adopts her ACTUAL granddaughter. It sounds like her mother WAS her mother, but her father was an unknown. and her mother is NOT ACTUALLY DEAD. OMG.
OMG.
omG THIS TIES OKAY this ties in SO well. I immediately thought of how she got choked up when she told her friends Ella isn't her mother AND IT JUST KINDA. FEELS.
OH MY BABY.
IT'S OKAY, BABY. It's so much more information than we expected. GRIEVE AS YOU WILL.
but you are handling this SO MUCH MORE MATURELY THAN I WOULD HAVE OMG.
I feel like someone who actually lives there would open the door. But I guess I'm not one to open my host's door for them. XD Maybe Julia is just SUPER FRIENDLY and OVERLY HELPFUL.
HE HAS A COUCH IN HIS ROOM.
Also, Tim is playing video games in his little brother's room. Does he just float around and play video games on the nearest station? HE SOUNDS LIKE MY LITTLE BROTHER. He always just HAPPENS to have a Nintendo handheld on him. XD
LOL
omg bless this little clown
OMG MY BABY IT'S OKAY. It's okay the happy bowl can be flipped back over and filled right back up it's okay plz dont lose faith omg D: LET'S JUST FILL THE HAPPY BOWL BACK UP OKAY ??
Okay, so on an unrelated note yet related note, I totally relate to this because my dad hated when I cry. He'd actually ground me for crying. Yet we live in a society that says crying is okay. SO I TOTALLY GET THIS MENTALITY and my POOR BABY JUST NEEDS A FREAKING CRY.
XDDD okay I swear, I think my brain is putting Tim in this stereotypical teenage-boy character 'cause this just made me laugh at how REAL it is. I could see him creeping into the doorway, hesitantly asking with a wild look "you... good?" Julia saying yeah she's clearly fine and Tim just slowly backing away from the room, pretending like he didn't see anything. THAT'S HOW I PICTURED IT AND I LIKE IT though I don't know how entirely accurate it is. XD
I didn't know Julia made this correlation. I needed nudging to remember it myself. Also, Hill is a rather common last name, so there's no guarantee they're related. UNLESS. OH. UNLESS Avery introduced him as Carter who also has a
cousinsisterdistant relativein Chicago. THEN MAYBE? HNNNNNNNNNGLOL. God I love this too. I LOVE JULIA'S WIT, GOD. I know this stuff.
NEVER MIND. SHE ADDRESSED IT.
I'm not gonna lie. I didn't even know the door opened, I thought they were shouting through the closed door. XD
WELL THAT WAS EASY.
I wonder if Avery and Carter pieced this together already, like they already knew Raven went to Julia's school. And that would be why it didn't surprise Carter that Julia was asking.
This chapter was ALL KINDS OF EXCITING. omgggggg.
Jabber, the One and Only!
Thanks so much for the review! You pointed out a few stuff and just commented on it, but I looked at it carefully and knew there was something to fix, lol.

Can I ask who you're favorite character is?
Thanks again for the review! I love your enthusiasm; it keeps me up!
I think it still might be Julia right now because I just love her narration to death, but I get such a kick out of Izzy when she's being young and goofy! It's like comical relief, and she's adorable.
Cool! I understand what you mean.
Katnes here with a review
This review is not intended to offend or hurt you or make your novel seem bad. But be warned you may feel offended anyway. So let's get started.
Grammar & Punctuation
Okay let's get started with this line
“Grams, I need to talk to you.” I said.
You might want to add a comma after the word you, instead of a period. I believe it flows better with a comma instead of a period.
Then we have this line here
I guessed it was his, because he was holding it.
The comma after the word his could be removed.
Now let's tackle this line
“Carter came.” I said, and looked at what game they were playing.
Again consider replacing the period after the word came with a comma.
Flow and Structure
You seem to have a lot of dialogue and not enough description, and what description was there seemed rushed and hurried. I really couldn't imagine myself there if that make sense. And that really interrupted with the flow for me. Other then that however the flow, and structure seems to go nicely.
Spelling
You have only one spelling error-bath tub. The two words might be combined.
Overall
This was a well done piece of work, with a little polishing I am sure it will shine.
Katnes Out
Thanks so much for the review! For the period and comma thing, I usually always put a period if my character isn't continuing his/her sentence. For example:
That's were I'd put a comma and a period over her:
I really hope that makes sense.
Thanks for the third time!
