In Phoenix

PreviousNext

This is a work in progress! This poem is meant to have a stanza at the beginning of each of my novels in my Phoenix series. There will be at least one more stanza. I really, really want to know what people think of them and if they'd find that an intriguing beginning to a novel. (By the way, I've got the prologue to my first book posted! If you're interested, please read that, too! It's called Heart of a Firebird.)

Touch the star-lit words

Raindrops cascading from an emerald leaf

Falling like tears of music,

Soft chimes upon the ground.

The wind, low voices

A storm, a mournful violin

A requiem that brushes a trembling sky.

Hesitant sunbeams pierce the quavering clouds

Like a melody on a piano

And the rippling silver grass

Like whispering—

So reach out, Phoenix, stretch to the sky

And touch the star-lit words

That ascend to heaven on gold-speckled wings

Soaring into the distant reaches

Of flaming eternity.

O, remember the Celestial Fire

Born again into the One

Of white angel wings,

Each moment of beauty

Suspended in stillness,

Illuminated to astonishing clarity

As redemption is born

And the Five are One:

Fire, Wind

Water and Wood

And Earth, the Immovable

Inside she, the Phoenix, in whose eyes

Is the power of Emtipha

And the beauty of all magic.

-

The Phoenix on silken wings

Fell to Earth, a single star

Tumbling from her beauteous home,

An angel stripped of glory and power

To dwell alone—

Scattered memories and shattered dreams

A life left frail and crumbling.

But she rises again in a halo of flames

From the ashes of her withered life,

An ember catching, spreading fire

To burn in her blue eyes,

Power.

She finds her strength; discovers reason

And through the fear becomes a beacon

Of hope unto all those lost

Or kept subdued beneath the hefty burden

Of life without liberation.

For within the Phoenix lies the beauty

And the radiance

Of the brilliant sun

That soars above, proudly in the sky.

And within the Phoenix’s gentle heart of love

Passions brood on,

She exudes brightness, the truth upon her tongue

And trails stars behind her step,

A voice to sing down the moon

From her lofty perch;

For the Phoenix song remains

A luminous lullaby

As she spreads her wings and takes to the sky.

-

But deeper is the story,

More important the tale

Than the beauty or magic within,

For every Reality had a role to play

And each day guided by the red path of Fate

Leads into infinity

Where she stands beckoning our wayward hearts.

Lost and alone no more,

The Phoenix bore the dreams and pains of others,

Lifting them on her shoulders

So they could climb to new heights.

Like a wayward flame

Drifting along the endless ocean

Or threatened by a raging storm,

She couldn’t find her place in the world;

She built one herself,

Of sweat and blood and tears,

Of laughter and dancing and love.

Those hardened beyond emotion

Found their hearts in her gentle hands and kind smile

As she kindled flames of faith and courage

To face whatever trials should come

Pounding on our flimsy doors,

Ready to knock down our safe havens

And leave us tossed on the restless sea.

With every memory, the Phoenix knew another tear

But she bore the burden beyond the sun

So she could rescue those oppressed by greed and hate

And spite—

And in this she found purpose, her reason to live.

This is really great poem and i love how it is about my second favorite mythical bird the Phoenix. I can see how this can start a book series it is lovely and beautiful so i look forward to read the novels. I love how you portray the beauty of the bird to the natural elements of the earth. I hope to see the novels and more poems like this one keep up the great work.

This is a fantastic bit of poetry. I myself write poetry sometimes, and I enjoy giving a picture of the setting. You have some beautiful descriptions on here, and I think the of having a stanza for each chapter is a good idea.
Also for not rhyming it was very well done. I generally don't enjoy poetry that doesn't rhyme, but this poem captivated my imagination. I could just see the Phoenix soaring in the air, wings out-stretched, fir-lit.

Hey There!

First off these are absolutely beautiful. I, as someone who loves poetry, am really intrigued by the idea of starting off your novel with a stanza, it definitely shows creative flair with the mixing of two different styles of writing. Also your word choice am imagery kept me very involved as a reader, especially in the first one (which was probably my favorite since I am a musician and have a soft spot for music related images). Very well done.

Thank you so much! I'll admit, I wrote that first stanza when I was in a very musical mood. I'm a singer and I hold music very dear to my heart. I'm so glad you enjoyed it!

Hello there! Rosie here for a review.

I really enjoyed this! I love all the imagery and the details that you included. The first stanza is my favorite, and for some reason it really spoke to me. I didn't completely understand your poem, but knowing that it goes with a story makes it a little less confusing. I love that you paired your poem with your story. I would totally do that if I had any flair for poetry.
For some reason, the imagery in your poem put me totally at piece. I don't know why, though. I think it was the natural rhythm your words held. I also wanted to dance (I'm a swing dancer), but then again I always want to dance. I think it's so cool how your words had that effect on me. It just shows how much I truly enjoyed your work.
Anyway, keep writing, and good luck with your novel. I will have to give it a look sometime.

Love,
Rosie.

Thank you so much for your kind comments! I love hearing that my poetry can affect anyone. Yeah, they're about the main character in my novels, and each stanza is styled to somewhat reflects what takes part in that book. I'm really glad you liked it!

Wow, you really have a way with words. I've impressed. What a splendid opening. You took imagery to a whole new, superb level. And I really admire that. Some of my favorite lines included, "raindrops cascading from an emerald leaf" That is just lovely and descriptive.
"But she rises again in a halo of flames"- that's somewhat interesting imagery.
"And in this, she found purpose, her reason to live". Simple, but satisfying way to end.

I'm so glad you like it! *sighs with relief* I'm not really used to sharing my poetry. It wasn't until a couple of years ago I discovered I had some real talent at it. It's really great to know someone else enjoys it!

For in everything it is no easy task to find the middle ... anyone can get angry—that is easy—or give or spend money; but to do this to the right person, to the right extent, at the right time, with the right motive, and in the right way, that is not for everyone, nor is it easy; wherefore goodness is both rare and laudable and noble.
