h a z e l e y e s
flare with the warm fire of sunset,
then soften into to the cool calm of mother earth.
look long enough, and you’ll see gold threads of sunlight,
flashes of copper that pulse with something alive, like
embers hidden in a bed of ash.

they are the warmth of the earth after rain,
the color of soil rich with stories.
hazel eyes are fields at dusk,
the color of wild grass and sunlit autumn leaves.

every time your gaze meets theirs,
the world shifts, evolves, mutates into
something that feels boundless, wild, and free.

It’s October again and I have hazel eyes, so I felt it was time for me to review this poem.
It’s very rare that I see anything mentioning hazel eyes, let alone describing them in such a wonderful way. You have great imagery and used descriptive language to illustrate not only the color of hazel eyes, but also the feelings experienced when looking into someone’s hazel eyes. (That part especially made me very happy to read.) There are so many details added into this poem, and you worded it just beautifully.
Some of my favorite lines are

then soften into to the cool calm of mother earth.
look long enough, and you'll see gold threads of sunlight,
and
the color of soil rich with stories.

the color of wild grass and sunlit autumn leaves.

Hazel eyes can be described as a mix of brown, green, and gold, and I think it was an excellent idea to compare hazel eyes to nature and the natural colors of soil, the earth, and sunlight. I really like the phrase “soil rich with stories”, as it shows not only how soil has so many stories and so much potential for life, but also how a person’s eyes can tell a multitude of stories.
The only issue I found with this poem is where it says “into to”, which I believe is a typo.
All in all, I adored this poem’s descriptions of hazel eyes and its underlying themes of nature and autumn. The last stanza’s words on what can be felt looking into someone’s hazel eyes were a lovely way to end the poem. I also like how you put the words in a hazel color, and paired them with a gorgeous image of a painting of hazel eyes.
Thank you for writing this poem, it made my hazel eyes and heart very happy. <3

Truly surely indeed actually without a doubt definitely indubitably verily forsooth significantly epic mode poggers style for real on God no cap and maybe mayhaps perhaps perchance even so on and so forth if you will for the sake of the argument as a matter of fact in my oh so humble and honest personal opinion not going to lie confirmed truth and a verifiable statement. (Other people use ChatGPT to cheat this word count thing (I have personally confirmed this) so at least you're getting words I actually typed myself...) (Also even though I'm doing this for points I do actually like this poem)

Hey, just so you know, it's against the YWS rules to make spam reviews (which are reviews that have no real critique material and are just trying to farm points). It's unfair to authors who are looking to improve their writing.

Hello, there! Avi speaking :)
@Elektra, this is beautiful. I have brown/hazel eyes, and it feels like they're barely ever romanticized. This poem made my heart swell. At one point (I believe it was around the line "look long enough, and you’ll see gold threads of sunlight,
flashes of copper that pulse with something alive, like
embers hidden in a bed of ash."), I softly brushed the pads of my fingers across the crinkles near the outer edges of my eyes and smiled.
I've always loved it when I'm on a bus, turning and talking to my friends and sunlight comes and hits me lightly (oh my gosh, get it?? Lightly?? I didn't even mean for that to happen lol)- okay, let's just say *softly* in my eyes. I'm making eye contact with something gold and bright and beautiful and in those moments, I feel beautiful and powerful from something as simple as how beautiful I feel my eyes are in that moment.
Thank you so much for writing this, I adore it <3
