Secrets of the Akkira: Chapter 2--Meet the Family

Chapter 2: Meet the Family

I didn't have a watch so I have no idea what time it was when I arrived at our property. I walked past an abandoned trailer on my left, with the woods my group trains in regularly. And ahead of me, stood a small, green home; wood on the outside with a black tiled roof and a tall brick chimney, was my base. Lights on in the back room told me that supper was ready.

I swung open the screen door to the porch and it's rusty spring stretch around, I let it go and it slammed shut behind me. I gripped the gold-colored doorknob and pushed the oak door open. I heard a whistle as I entered and I ducked backwards quickly, hearing two thuds on the door behind me. I looked at the door to discover two knives stuck fast, covered in layers of deep-blue water.

I leaned back up and saw a teammate of mine, Amy, standing in the room ahead of me.

“Amy! What's that about?!” I called out.

“You're late.” She slipped another knife from a holster at her side, twirled and released. I went off to the side and grabbed the hilt, and I jumped forward, preparing a practice strike. However, pain struck me across the face and arms with a burning sensation and it momentarily blinded me. Another blow caught me in the stomach, making me release the knife.

After a minute, the searing heat cooled and I opened my eyes to see that boiling water was dripping off my clothes. “What the...” I looked up at Amy, who now had control over her knife, “That's cheating, you can't use hydro in hand-to-hand combat!”

“No enemy is going to be fair, grasshopper,” she winked. Amy is a colorful character; she has black hair and mud-brown eyes. Today she wears a bright-blue t-shirt and cutoff jeans. On her right hand she dons a rubber bracelet saying, 'Whatever'.

I push myself to my feet and I ring out my shirt, “Where'd you get the hot water in the first place?”

“Casey was making tea on the stove.”

I frowned.

I walked past her, heading past the first bedroom where Amy was first at and into the kitchen on the other side. On the old, old table blanketed with a green tablecloth was a meal fit for a king. Ham was sliced and placed on a white platter, mashed potatoes made fresh were within a large, ceramic bowl on the right with gravy adjacent to it. A bowl of freshly-picked peaches sat in the very center and rice on the left of the ham. At the north of the table was a pot of creamed corn. Our group leader, Casey, stood on the other side of the table stirring a bowl of macaroni.

I didn't say much to the poor soul. He's been out of it since his brother died two years ago, something we couldn't have seen coming. I pulled a white plate from the chipping, white cabinet that is older than my parents and turned towards the table. I took a fork off the dish drainer over the sink to my left.

I started with the ham, I personally am not much of a meat-eater, so I ended up getting just a couple of pieces. I loaded up on mashed potatoes and gravy, topping off my plate with rice galore and corn. I gave Casey a quick glance, and left quickly, taking a peach from the table.

I came to my room, which was a simple den that connected with Casey's room; it had two cots and a couch dividing them. A TV sat on a small oak table across the room from the TV. Terrance sat with the final member of our group, Sarah.

“Hey Cole, you're home late,” Sarah proclaimed.

I motioned my plate towards Terrance, “Blame Captain No-Underpants. He almost got me killed today because he couldn't resist some girl.”

She looked at him in disgust and slapped him hard across the face, “You pig!”

I grinned and took my seat between the two and I began to eat, getting the meat down first. To my right, Sarah popped her knuckles by pushing on her lower jaw, on my left, Terrance was caught up in an episode of NCIS. Sarah drops her hand, accidentally landing on my leg. When she notices it, I see her hand tense up and she draws it back casually.

I ignore it and turn to the TV in time to see Agent DiNozzo get Gibbs-slapped.

“Oh, Cole, before I forget, you're parents called, said they're coming in for a visit, they'll be here in a few days.” Sarah said.

My parents are Beta rank Akkira. These Akkira handle special missions that go on files no one ever sees. Even I do not have a clue of what they do, they cannot tell any soul, living or dead. “That's nice.” I said. My parents and I are not close, in fact I never knew an Akkira who was close to their parents. We are separated from our parents at age ten, when we are assigned a rank based off our abilities, physical and metaphysical. From there, we work our way up.

“Come on, Cole, be happy, it'll be nice, like a little reunion!” She was looking right at me. Sarah had a face no one could match, scarlet hair fell down to touch her shoulders lightly, she had an Irish-Cherokee built face and amazing green eyes with red halos around the pupils.

“I'm not too sure about that, Sarah, last time they were here, I saw them for forty-five minutes and they were gone again.”

“Don't blame them for work! Don't be so negative.”

I shoved a fork full of rice and gravy into my mouth to avoid saying anything.

Sarah stood up, wearing a white shirt and green skirt, and looked at me, “I'll be right back, I have to take a shower.”

As she shut the bathroom door, Terrance looked at me, “You know she's into you right?”

I rolled my eyes, “Well, you do tell me that very often.”

“Dude, you should do something about it, take advantage before she finds someone else.”

I sighed while clearing my plate of what was left of the potatoes, “It's bad for the group.”

“Sure. That's why.”

I leered at him, “What's that supposed to mean.”

He looked back at the TV, “Nothing, young pyro. Nothing at all.”

With a look of scorn on my face, I bit into my peach.

A little while later, Sarah entered the room dressed in her night clothes, a long, white nightshirt and blue short-shorts.

I stood up and headed to the bathroom for my shower, “Hey,” Terrance called, “What about your dishes?”

“Take them, you're perfectly capable.”

Later that night, I was sound asleep, slowly drifting off into a world of dreams. Terrible dreams. It was dark, no stars dotted the sky, the moon was all but gone. The group... they were crumpled on the ground unconscious. I... I was slipping but I was there... I saw it. Six-foot tall, black suit with no tie, glowing red eyes staring at me, mouth having four elongated canines twisted in a grin most foul, each finger was tipped in talons and his hair was an odd purple. His body was coated in the Sin Marks of a Altissimus Soul. In his right hand, was the neck of our youngest teammate, Kage.

Kage looked at me, one hand on the creature's tight grip, one hand reaching out to me. He called my name, “Cole... help me...”

But I was too far away, my legs would not function, would not move, I whispered his name, “Kage...”

I was dying, and I knew it. I was fading. I watched as the monster's right hand moved ever-so slightly, as if teasing.

Then his hand plunged into Kage's body, leaving a splatter of blood upon the ground.

Kage screamed in pain and I winced. It was too much for me.

I watched as a sickly-white orb was pulled from Kage's body and his eyes go blank. I reach out, “No... Stop!” I try to scream, but nothing comes out, and the monster swallows Kage's soul whole. It was too late. The creature vanished and I faded into an endless abyss.

I jolt forward from my cot, sweat dripping from my head, down my arms. My mouth was dry, heart pounding and I trembled uncontrollably. I tucked my legs to my chest and wrapped my arms around them.

Truth be told, I always blamed Kage's death on myself. True, I didn't stand a chance against a Altissimus, I was half-paralyzed, and I was bone dry of energy, but I watched it happen. I saw him die.

Casey and Kage were inseparable, though they never looked like each other. Casey has a large frame, muscular build, with white hair and light green eyes like his mother and tanned skin. Casey also knows aerokinesis, control of the wind. Kage on the other hand was thin and frail, pale and sickly. His hair was charcoal-black and his eyes were solid gray. He used umbrakinesis, controlling of shadows and darkness.

I always called my group my family, and the death of Kage hurt us all, but not nearly as bad as Casey, who became almost mute over it.

I got out of bed and walked on the cold floor towards the kitchen, where I pulled open the refrigerator door open and removed one of my Dr. Peppers. I gulped down a good bit of the bottle. I screwed the cap back on and ran my hand through my brown-blond hair. I exhaled loudly and walked back to my room where I collapsed onto my cot.

My head was beginning to hurt, another one of my many migraines. I reached over to the right and picked up a container of Advil. I took two and gulped down two swigs of Dr. Pepper. I heard some movement coming from Sarah's cot. I didn't move and didn't breathe, I didn't want to wake her up. When she stopped moving, I got up and walked out of the room. In Casey's bedroom, Casey's bed was on the wall across to me and Amy was on the bed to the right. I go out the door on the far right and into the living room, where a dresser, two recliners, a large, gray television and a couch with a sleeping Terrance on it as he does not have a bed.

Under the dresser, I pull out a journal of mine, a marble composition notebook with the word “Esper” scrawled across the front. I flip through it, finding the next blank page. And I write: Dear Esper, I had the dream again, five nights in a row. I still refuse to tell anyone though I may burst. There's still no news on the Altissimus, no news on anything like him with his description. The dream is exactly the same as it has always been. Down to the last detail, I should see an Akkira medical professional soon because it may be post traumatic stress disorder. I wonder how long I can last. It's driving me insane. But I can't admit this to the group, they'd just say things like “There's nothing you could have done” or “You shouldn't worry about it.” Because neither of that is true. At least, I wish neither is true. I'll last as long as I have to. I'll update as necessary. ~C. Kindlin

I kept Esper since Kage died, I figured it would help me cope. This is my third Esper, the previous two have been filled and stashed away. I tossed my journal back under the dresser until it hit the wall, then I turned and went back to my room, hoping to catch the remainder of my Z's.

Okay, your style has recovered and is back on track, though it doesn't quite have the funny touch that your latest chapter has.

This is starting to make me think that it's from some kind of computer game or something, and that we're supposed to just know what the world they're in is like, what some fancy name you give to a monster will make it . . .

Sorry, I don't play this game.

The first paragraph was really messy I'm afraid to say, it was sad.
A house can be wood on the outside . . . but not on the inside?

I'd advise you to re-read your first few paragraphs (Yes, out loud would be ideal) and then rewrite them, it would do wonders for the rest of the story.

The first paragraph of a story is almost as important as the last, the first gives a feeling for the story and helps determine whether a reader likes it or not, and the last paragraph helps determine whether or not he reads on or not.

Your last paragraph needs work and so does your first.

Now, I don't know any of Coles history, I need too, badly. What does he look like? What do the different members of his family look like?

It can really help in a story (When putting in details) to put in simple pronouns. Like instead of just saying, couch, you might say, grey couch. Just an example.

It really helps.

But, good work, this is interesting, and overall it makes me want to read on.

Keep writing!

Hey there Jay! A belated review of your second chapter.

Overall, this was good. Your dream sequence was good, and you included your character's emotions afterwards, something that I haven't often seen, even when reviewing horror. Kudos to you on that. This was a little on the shorter side, as was, your last chapter was like that, and hey, short chapters are okay! It also means, however, I'll have to nit-pick a lot.

I didn't have a watch so I have no idea what time it was when I arrived at our property

Should be 'had'. I'm sure English has a name for that tense, but since I fail at remembering those, you'll have to take my word for it. Tense switches are, in fact, a rather more pressing concern in this chapter. You do it quite suddenly, and without explanation, so that was rather jarring. Examples below:

I swung open the screen door to the porch and it's rusty spring stretch around, I let it go and it slammed shut behind me.

Past tense, here. However in keeping with that, it should be 'stretched.' Furthermore, it should be 'its', as it's possessive, while 'it's' indicates 'it is.' I would also replace the comma after 'around' with a full-stop, separating the syntactical periods, it sounds more natural that way.

I jolt forward from my cot, (...)

Conversely, 'jolt' is in present tense, thus should be 'jolted.' In fact, you switch pretty much totally to present tense after the dream sequence, which is grammatically incorrect. So either choose present or past, but not both!

You also misuse punctuation in dialogue at times, like here:

I rolled my eyes, “Well, you do tell me that very often.”

There should be a full-stop. Commas are only used when followed by a speaking verb, and even then, like so: "Well, you do tell me that very often," I said, rolling my eyes.
It could also be I rolled my eyes. "Well you do tell me that very often," I snorted/said(speaking verb).
Basically there are multiple ways, just not how you did it.

Conversely,
“Oh, Cole, before I forget, you're parents called, said they're coming in for a visit, they'll be here in a few days.” Sarah said.

That there, after 'day's requires a comma.

And ahead of me, stood a small, green home; wood on the outside with a black tiled roof and a tall brick chimney, was my base

Perhaps you mean 'wooden' or 'made of wood.' Then you might want to create an independent period after 'chimney' and so have it 'This was my base' or something. Otherwise it's incorrect!

Now, enough grammatical nit-picking and onto broader comments.

For example, the whole Casey/Kage thing. This probably happened a while back, so no doubt the characters would have a subdued, particular relationship with Casey, as Casey with them. How they'd elaborate this depends on their personalities, especially the MC, who blames himself. Perhaps something more than post-traumatic stress disorder? Either way, I look forward to a potential conversation between Casey and Cole. Oh yes.

Also the Sarah/Cole deal. It's mentioned Cole knows, and if I'm not mistaken he might have some form of feelings for her. If not he, then Sarah (whom the readers know have feelings for Cole). Why have they never spoken about this before? Sarah evidently has no qualms. Another tasty charactership I look forward to.

Also Cole's relationship with his parents, perhaps that could be done more introspectively/subjectively. Oh yes, that I look forward to.

In other words, perhaps you could have spared more thought to individual characterization. Never fear however, that can be done in further chapters! I hope.

One more thing, when Cole dodges the daggers. Now I know he's no ordinary human, but no ordinary human is that fast. Just saying.

To recap, work on your characterization some more, and re-read this to correct the grammatical errors, especially your tenses! This was great though, as your first chapter.

Hope this helped

Hey there JayShay!
You've got a nice story here, but there are a few mistakes.
I'm going off reading this chapter alone, so if any of these issues were brought up/explained in the previous chapter, feel free to ignore them.

Alright, first;

Spoiler
I didn't have a watch so I had no idea what time it was when I arrived at our property.

I changed 'have' to 'had'. You're using the past tense in the rest of the sentence, and the majority of the passage, so you would have to continue it here. You do this a few times throughout, actually, here's another one;

Spoiler
I swung open the screen door to the porch and it's rusty spring stretched around...

It's a small problem that can easily be edited, so I'm sure you'll be able to fix it on your own.

Another problem I found was that your descriptions were a bit off. They were hard to understand, like here;

Spoiler
I walked past an abandoned trailer on my left, with the woods my group trains in regularly.

From this description, it actually sound like the woods are in the abandoned trailer. Maybe it's just me, but it's kind of confusing. This also happens quite a bit when you try to explain things. I recommend trying to focus on describing situations. Try using more details to paint a picture in the readers mind.

Those are the two major errors I found, besides a few grammar and spelling errors. I'm sure you'd be able to fix these easily, and when you do it will be a much more enjoyable read.
But anyway, good work and keep on writing :D

All I have to say to that is my original copy said the woods were on the right sorry for the confusion

ED here. I’ll be reviewing your work here today. I nitpick a lot, so I broke it up into parts for you. Hope this helps!
PART ONE:

Spoiler
I didn't have a watch so I have no idea what time it was when I arrived at our property. I walked past an abandoned trailer on my left, with the woods my group trains in regularly. And ahead of me, stood a small, green home; wood on the outside with a black tiled roof and a tall brick chimney, was my base. Lights on in the back room told me that supper was ready.
I swung open the screen door to the porch and it's rusty spring stretch around, I let it go and it slammed shut behind me. I gripped the gold-colored doorknob and pushed the oak door open. I heard a whistle as I entered and I ducked backwards quickly, hearing two thuds on the door behind me….

Too many sentences starting with "I's" here, get some variation in there! Plus everything's really choppy, I know you're aiming for a "eerie" feeling here, but it gets a little old. Experiment with sentence structure and word choice... get some strong verbs in somewhere. It’s interesting enough... just needs a lot of revision to become "gripping."
I looked at the door to discover two knives stuck fast, covered in layers of deep-blue water.

What the heck is this supposed to mean?

“You're late.” She slipped another knife from a holster at her side, twirled and released. I went off to the side and grabbed the hilt, and I jumped forward, preparing a practice strike. However, pain struck me across the face and arms with a burning sensation and it momentarily blinded me. Another blow caught me in the stomach, making me release the knife.

Why are they slicing each other up if they’re on the same team? (I must have missed something in chapter one)
“No enemy is going to be fair, grasshopper,”

Dude, everyone knows where that’s from. Star Wars/Kung Fu references are not clever dialogue.
Amy is a colorful character; she has black hair and mud-brown eyes. Today she wears a bright-blue t-shirt and cutoff jeans. On her right hand she dons a rubber bracelet saying, 'Whatever'.

Why is this such a sudden transition? One moment they’re fighting and now he’s describing her outfit? Don’t copy and paste a character profile here, you can hint at her appearance throughout the story but don’t dump. Hint. Also, this is in present tense. You need to keep it in past.
I push myself to my feet and I ring out my shirt, “Where'd you get the hot water in the first place?”

Present tense again. And boiling water, I must point out, causes serious injuries when it soaks someone’s shirt.
I walked past her, heading past the first bedroom where Amy was first at

Where she was first at? What do you mean be this… clarify via sentence structure.

How did they get a feast like this in the middle of the forest?
I didn't say much to the poor soul. He's been out of it since his brother died two years ago, something we couldn't have seen coming.

This is out of place later… why does he mention this now? Save back-story like this for later on… again, hint and clue, don’t tell us everything about the characters right away.
I pulled a white plate from the chipping, white cabinet that is older than my parents and turned towards the table. I took a fork off the dish drainer over the sink to my left.

You don’t have to tell us where everything thing is… show, don’t tell. We don’t care where he got the fork from, you could trim down the sentence by saying “I pulled a plate down from the white cabinet that’s older than my parents. I grabbed a fork and sat down.”
I started with the ham, I personally am not much of a meat-eater, so I ended up getting just a couple of pieces. I loaded up on mashed potatoes and gravy, topping off my plate with rice galore and corn. I gave Casey a quick glance, and left quickly, taking a peach from the table.

Don’t describe everything he ate… but rather, how did they eat? In silence, what was Casey doing? You could put something like “We ate in silence, and I grabbed a peach before heading up to my room.”
Also, what happened to Amy, did she just disappear?
I motioned my plate towards Terrance,

You didn’t mention he took the plate upstairs… so it seems to appear magically, and suddenly, in his hand! What’s wrong with him eating at the table?
“Blame Captain No-Underpants.

Um, this is a rather juvenile insult. How old are your characters? Try something that sounds a little more “mature.” Maybe, “Blame head-in-the-clouds over there.”
To my right, Sarah popped her knuckles by pushing on her lower jaw,

“Rights and lefts” don’t matter in fiction. Just say Sarah, who was sitting next to me, cracked her knuckles.”
Sarah drops her hand, accidentally landing on my leg. When she notices it, I see her hand tense up and she draws it back casually.

Present tense again. “Sarah DROPPED her hand, and it accidentally LANDED on my leg. When she NOTICED, I saw her tense up and she DREW back casually.” You seem to do this all lot… go back over and read it, watch out for all these types of problem areas.
I ignore it and turn to the TV in time to see Agent DiNozzo get Gibbs-slapped.

Ignore what? The hand? Her drawing back? And why are they watching a kid’s show if their training in the woods? They’re probably too busy and tired for stuff like that.
Sarah had a face no one could match, scarlet hair fell down to touch her shoulders lightly, she had an Irish-Cherokee built face and amazing green eyes with red halos around the pupils.

Irish-Cherokee? This is unusual, and the reader will have a hard time picturing it. Again, show, don’t tell. Don’t describe what she looks like, don’t just dump a bunch of information on the reader. Show. What sticks out the most to Cole when he looks at her. Her eyes? Describe that, but nothing more.
“I'm not too sure about that, Sarah, last time they were here, I saw them for forty-five minutes and they were gone again.”

Say: “Half-hour” and not 45 minutes. 45 minutes would have been too precise for him to tell.
“Don't blame them for work! Don't be so negative.”

“Don’t blame them for THEIR work”
Sarah stood up, wearing a white shirt and green skirt, and looked at me, “I'll be right back, I have to take a shower.”

Don’t describe her clothes. Cole would have noticed that right away, and she’s taking a shower so she’ll change anyways. Plus, the reader isn’t going to care. Also, she just randomly decided to take a shower? Why not have her do something more useful?
“Well, you do tell me that very often.”

This sounds a little weird. Just say something like “on a regular basis.” It fits better.
I leered at him,

“Leer” means “smile in a sinister/inciting manner.” Try “glare”
“Nothing, young pyro.”

Why is his friend calling him “young pyro.” They’re the same age so that’s odd. Try “pro” or “ace” or something like that.

DREAM PART:
Spoiler
There wasn’t actually a lot I could comment on here, this section was great. Watch out for your grammar--- there’s the sneaky present tense that slips in, and read out loud to see where you need to revise.
Here’s my question though, why did you NEED to have your characters sitting around the house talking to each other? You could have skipped almost right from the end of his training to the dream. If something doesn’t help further the plot, it shouldn’t be in there.
Later that night, I was sound asleep, slowly drifting off into a world of dreams. Terrible dreams.

This could be so intense… but it falls flat. Use more verbs. “I must have been asleep. Slowly, my body drifted off into a world of shadows…” etc. etc. etc. Work with this, this could be a really cool part if you added and changed stuff.

Excellent.

PART THREE:
Spoiler
though they never looked like each other.

This doesn’t have a lot to do with them being inseparable now, does it? Plus this lends itself to more boring (sorry) description. I’m sure you want to write action just as much as the rest of us want to read it. Don’t feel like you need to describe your characters… give hints throughout the story. (You’ll make you’re readers feel smarter that way, and they’ll love you for it.

Plus this whole paragraph is out of place.

Dr. Pepper should not be drunk so late at night… and it’s hardly calming. What about some water or a glass of milk? Also, don’t have your character describe his own appearance. You can hint at it by the way the other characters talk to him or act, later on, throughout the story. But don’t put “I ran my hair through my brown-blonde hair.” Do you know anyone who talks like this about themselves in real life?
I took two and gulped down two swigs of Dr. Pepper. I heard some movement coming from Sarah's cot. I didn't move and didn't breathe, I didn't want to wake her up. When she stopped moving, I got up and walked out of the room. In Casey's bedroom, Casey's bed was on the wall across to me and Amy was on the bed to the right. I go out the door on the far right and into the living room, where a dresser, two recliners, a large, gray television and a couch with a sleeping Terrance on it as he does not have a bed.

(…maybe he gets migraines from the Dr. Pepper? ;) ) There is a lot of telling going on here, but not a lot of showing. What does Cole notice the most? Maybe it’s the even breathing of the sleeping Sarah… maybe the humming of electricity which irritates his headache, or the dim green night light that shows him his way down the hall. Make your description more personal.
Another point: You might be kind of young but it’s still weird for girls and guys to sleep in the same room. Have the girls sleep in one and the guys in another.
hoping to catch the remainder of my Z's

This seems a bit too comedic for the mood, try: “I hoped I would be able to fall back asleep.” Or something along those lines.

ESPER PART:

Spoiler
This section was okay, but just okay. What is the relevance of Cole’s Esper to the plot? As is, it’s very boring, and the reader just skips right over it. And you know what? They don’t miss anything. Only put something in your story if it’s important… other wise you’ll have your readers zzz-ing.

Well, I hope all this huge amount of information helps. PM me if you have any questions. Keep writing!

For.starters there's no upstairs. And a lot of problems with tenses and things happened on my computer because the program I use isn't Microsoft word. Next, Terrance is older than Cole by a year. Not a big difference, I know, but that's the way people are where I'm from. Also, Cole and Amy were sparring, it's part of their training and society. At the beginning of the spat with the knives is because Amy is a hydrokinetic. As for the Terrance insult, refer to chapter one, that chapter explains the basics.
