Prologue

Garret woke up in a hot sweat; his heart was racing and his mind was erratic. He was panting heavily and needed to get up, but it felt like his body was working against him. He tried to move his legs, but it was as if they were glued to the bed. The most he could do was throw the blanket off to the side, which he managed to do thanks to his arms being about the only part of his body that wanted to cooperate with him. After he tossed the blanket to the floor, he gazed around the room anxiously. His mind was still bouncing off the walls like a hyperactive child who had just ingested a pound of pure sugar. He needed to take his medication for it to stop.

He inhaled deeply, the cool air filling his lungs as he braced himself to try moving his legs again. After a moment, he swung his legs off the side of the bed with a sense of relief, feeling the blood flow back into his stiff muscles. He took one final look around the room and slowly shuffled to the hallway, leaving his glasses sitting in their case right beside his phone, which was plugged in, and sitting on the nightstand as well.

"Surely I’m not up as late as I think I am, right?"

He stood by the window right outside his room, gazing out into the night. The darkness outside seemed almost palpable, a thick shroud that enveloped everything in its path. He squinted, straining to make out any details in the inky blackness, but it was no use. He realized with a twinge of anxiety that he had left his glasses on the nightstand, and without them, everything was just an indistinct blur.

A sense of unease settled over him as he pondered the implications of his situation. What if someone was lurking in the shadows outside, watching him through the window? What if there was some danger lurking just beyond his field of vision? He couldn't shake the feeling that he was exposed and vulnerable, standing there in the dark with nothing to protect him.

He took a few steps away and headed for the bathroom. Once he reached it, he paused in front of the door. Feeling an overwhelming urge, he looked down the hall the rest of the way toward the other side of the house. After feeling content that there surely was nothing there, he turned his attention back towards the bathroom door. But as he reached for the doorknob, his hand met only emptiness, as if the handle had vanished into thin air.

"What the hell…?"

He muttered a curse under his breath as he stared at the space where the doorknob had been. Surely this had to be a trick of the mind; there is no way a doorknob could just disappear like that. He looked at his hand as if he expected to see the knob there, but it was nowhere to be found.

In an attempt to gather his scattered thoughts, he closes his eyes for a moment and focuses on an image of the door. He then reaches once more for the knob, this time feeling something there that felt like it was the handle he was reaching for. He opened his eyes again to find his hand resting on it. Breathing a sigh of relief, he opens the door, turns on the lights, and gazes at himself in the mirror.

Garret has frizzy red hair that is usually styled neatly, but he currently looks a bit disheveled since he's only half awake. His soft brown eyes seemed to gleam with intelligence and a hint of mischief. He stands at an impressive 6'2" with a lean and toned physique, exuding an air of confidence and elegance. His facial features are defined, with a chiseled jawline adding to his handsome appearance.

After he gets done admiring himself, he opens the mirror cabinet and reaches inside, pulls a few bottles of medication out, places them on the counter, and closes the cabinet. After taking a deep breath, he leans on the counter with his hands shaking slightly as he unscrews the lids of the bottles and pours out the correct dosage of each pill. In addition to medication for his liver and heart, there is a special pill fabricated just for him to keep The Others from taking control. He looks at himself in the mirror momentarily, then swallows the pills one by one, just like he does every other day without thinking.

Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening/Night(whichever one it is in your part of the world),

Hi! I'm here to leave a quick review!!

First Impression: This was a lovely piece here. I think it had just the perfect amount of tension just being built up and up there in the background, climbing up to the top of the tension tree and the way it ends caps it off really nicely.

Anyway let's get right to it,

Garret woke up in a hot sweat; his heart was racing and his mind was erratic. He was panting heavily and needed to get up, but it felt like his body was working against him. He tried to move his legs, but it was as if they were glued to the bed. The most he could do was throw the blanket off to the side, which he managed to do thanks to his arms being about the only part of his body that wanted to cooperate with him. Well we're starting off very strong here with that one there. Looks like we've got ourselves a main character with a couple of pressing issues to deal with there, and issues that also happen to be flaring up in a pretty scary moment so far. I think it does very well both introducing the character and attracting our attention to this at the same time.

Oooh well that was a bit of a twist there. I wasn't quite expecting to have Garret get his situation take a little turn for the better quite so quickly, but then the immediate follow up there of things getting a bit worse again with yet another problem presenting itself works really well I think.

Oooooh well things are starting to get just a little bit spooky. Loving that development so far. I think its a nice addition on top of everything else that we've already got going on. It definitely adds on very nicely to everything we've got going on here. I can't wait to see what more happens for this one. Its already quite the prologue.

He muttered a curse under his breath as he stared at the space where the doorknob had been. Surely this had to be a trick of the mind; there is no way a doorknob could just disappear like that. He looked at his hand as if he expected to see the knob there, but it was nowhere to be found.

I like how this little investigation is proceeding here. I think Garret is doing pretty well there given all of the problems that he is facing on top of this little problem that he currently has to face. I think its all lining up really well here for this prologue.

Well that's quite the place to end on there. I think you've done a great job building up to this point and now this leaves us on quite the little cliffhanger there. I think its a perfect place to end.

Aaaaand that's it for this one.

Overall: Overall, a very solid prologue this one. We're already quite invested in Garret and I for one definitely want to see what happens to him, and we've got enough other mysteries in here to think of too that ultimately we end up with quite a lot of reasons that I definitely want to read more here.

As always remember to take what you think was helpful and forget the rest.

Hi, quick review for this prologue!
This is a very mysterious chapter, making it very interesting. Your first paragraph was really detailed with the explanation of how he got up, it wasn't just like, "Garret got up, he went to the toilet, there was no knob, the end." You used a lot of detail about how Garret was feeling in both his feelings and his touch.

He stood by the window right outside his room, gazing out into the night. The darkness outside seemed almost palpable, a thick shroud that enveloped everything in its path. He squinted, straining to make out any details in the inky blackness, but it was no use.

You described the darkness really well here, using a lot of metaphors. There's also a lot of imagery, and I can see what the character is seeing in my mind.
Towards the end, I think you might have changed tenses, and I'm not sure whether that was just a mistake or on purpose, but it's here:
He looked at his hand as if he expected to see the knob there, but it was nowhere to be found.

This sentence seems to be in the past tense, but in the next paragraph, it changes:
In an attempt to gather his scattered thoughts, he closes his eyes for a moment and focuses on an image of the door.
    z
Now the narration is in past tense, when just before, it was present tense, without the perspective or scene changing.
Lastly, one of the last sentences was really exciting and made me want to read the next chapter:
In addition to medication for his liver and heart, there is a special pill fabricated just for him to keep The Others from taking control.

Who are "The Others," and why do they want to take control of him?
Overall, this is a really good chapter! Happy writing, I look forward to reading the rest of the book!

    Thanks for the review!

I'll definitely need to fix that past tense/present tense issue, and when it comes to The Others... Well, that's a story for a different chapter

Wow! Ok, this story was very interesting, and I am excited to see where this goes. First of all, all of your descriptions were insanely good, and they gave me insight into Garrett's emotions.

Second, the progress of the story was pretty good, I love how you paced yourself while still keeping the story short.

Thirdly, the pills and the reference to The Others is interesting, I am pretty curious to see what this means. Does this mean that Garret has a Moon Knight situation here?

Fourth, the doorknob thing is.......well....I would have been as shocked as him if that happened to my door. Also the way that the doorknob is there and then not is unsettling.

Lastly, I am excited to see what happens next, and I look forward to whatever you write next. Remember to keep writing, and don't give up.

Thanks! Your review was very insightful and I can't wait to be able to post the other chapters soon!

And the pills are foreshadowing at what's to come, so stay tuned %uD83D%uDE09
