The Life of an Introvert

Some days are like a struggle

With these people all around,

Their noises keep on coming

And they never ever stop.

They try to engage me in conversation,

But sometimes I want to be alone.

No one cares.

No one listens.

They don't truly understand.

To be outgoing is a challenge.

For me, at least.

Sure, sometimes it’s nice

To have a friend by my side,

To console me when times are tough.

But don’t try to bring me to the dance on Friday night.

I won’t enjoy myself.

Once you get to know me, though

I swear you will find,

I’m not a closed up turtle

Hiding in my shell.

I'm unique.

I just want you to understand

It's not depression,

It's not anger,

It's not sadness.

I am just an introvert.

Nothing and no one can ever change me.

This is my first review, so...

I was so happy when I read this. You understand what it's like, and it's very comforting to read this. Even though some people don't understand and won't get this poem, I enjoyed it quite a lot. It's very nice, good job

Hey there! It's MysteryMe, here for a review! (well, kind of a review, just not a very good one).

Let me just start off by saying: YES, YOU GET IT!!!!

Hehe... anyway, nice poem. I totally understand what you're implying. I'm an introvert too, and it's hard sometimes, considering we live in an extrovert-dominated world.

My parents are always telling me that I need to go out more (my mom even thought I needed therapy, once, just because of my introverted-ness) and my friends are always dragging me to social events that I really don't enjoy. I wish they could just understand that I am what I am. Being an introvert is no better or worse than being an extrovert, and I can feel comfortable being around people just as easily as they can feel comfortable being alone (sometimes I like it, but it's just not natural for me). I mean, don't get me wrong, I absolutely love my friends, and I usually have lots of fun hanging out with them, but for extended periods of time? I'm out. I just need my thinking space, or else I explode, and that's never pretty.

Well, this wasn't much of a review... but nice job! I love the message of this piece, and you pulled it off really well. Keep writing!!!!!

Wow! I really like this poem. Although I am a serious outgoing person, but I understand what this means. I don't like going to the dance, though. But anyway, I think this is an interesting way of portraying the life of a introvert. I especially like the last paragraph. Way to go!

Hi there FinnWaterfall, LGF here for a quick review!

I'm a bit of a mix between introvert and extrovert. I like to think I'm an introvert because sometimes I think it makes me more mysterious, but I love being around people so I really need to stop pretending.

Anyway, back to the poem.

I thought the concept was neat. Its funny but I kind of took it like it's kind of specifically towards extroverts to sort of teach them about introverts, and the everyday struggles they have to go through.

Personally I did find it eye-opener. It broadened my knowledge and feelings of introverts. I totally agree with these lines;

It's not depression,

It's not anger,

It's not sadness.

I do think a lot of people think introverts aren't happy, as if they secretly want to be really outgoing. I think introverts are actually perfectly happy the way they are, and not trying to overcome some personal battle.

Okay so those are my thoughts for the concept. Now onto some nitpicks;

Their noises keep on coming

And they never ever stop.

I don't know, to me this line didn't really feel like something associated by being an introvert. It almost sounds like schizophrenia or something, like your hearing voices in your head.

Sure, sometimes it’s nice

To have a friend by my side,

To console me when times are tough.

But don’t try to bring me to the dance on Friday night.

I won’t enjoy myself.

This isn't a nitpick, I just wanted to say that I LOVED this stanza. Really. Just the flow and the rhythm and the ending just the stark 'I won't enjoy myself' really interested me.

Anyway, fantastic poem I really loved it and your a very talented poet;

LGF

Thanks for reviewing. I just added that stanza before I posted them poem so I'm glad you liked it.

being an extrovert, this may be a bit difficult to review.
wait no, its because its a poem >.>

well then, i will critique you on two subjects here; one the poem being what it is, a poem, and the content.

the poem aspect

alright, this seems to be in a structured free verse form. not one of my personal favorites, but it seems to be popular among people who like to put a prose touch to a work they dont want to be prose. is that what you were going for? i only get that feeling because of the proper grammar and the lack of a rhyme scheme.

besides that, a little note on the single lines in the middle of the poem: usually someone puts something separate form everything else in order to isolate and/or emphasize it. when you have an a long set of these single lines after one another, they lose their value. it might be a personal thing, but i feel like it would've had a much greater effect if you only separated these three lines:

It's not depression,
It's not anger,
It's not sadness.

just a stylistic thing, but it would've made the poem look much nicer as well as gave an extra oomph to the conclusion of the poem.

the content

now im not much for criticizing the topic that someone writes about, so i wont go into detail here xp you present your ideas in a way that makes them easy to understand. while the title will help attract people who either enjoy or loathe the subject, making it so obvious what the poem is about usually takes a way half the fun. the other half is taken away when you reveal what you're talking about in the poem itself xp
my suggestion for you to improve is try to keep the reader guessing. if youre going to tell us straight up what youre talking about, you could do it in a much simpler way, with much less words. but the fact that its meant to be hidden behind this poetic form means it should be just that: hidden. not sure if you get what im saying but yeah xp

other than that, another job well done. i look forward to even more from you in the future :D

ps. i couldnt find this anywhere in the poetry section or in the green room. i only got to it because of the link on your wall xp maybe my computer just hates me T.T

and it seems the poem has changed in the time it took me to write this review, so some of that structure stuff might not make sense xp

I changed some things :/

i gotcha xp and congrats, you're my one hundred and fiftieth review xp

Hey there and welcome to YWS! Purple and fellow introvert here to give you a review! Let's get started.
I like the basis idea for this. The only comments I have are that introvertedness isn't really a good thing but it's also not so some of this extent. Like introverts have some trouble doing social things with unfamiliar people and usually prefer to be alone, but it's not that this could never change or that we don't want to change. In fact, I'd love to have a surge of bravery and take charge of what seems like my life slipping away because I feel like I'm better on my own. Along the lines of poetry, the flow is pretty choppy and unorganized and some of the wording could be stronger or more poetic. Also, the line "The noises keep on coming" sounds like something totally different than introvertedness, i.e. skitzophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression. Are the noises in metaphor for..people? Because you then continue to say that they try to talk to you but you rather be alone. If that's what you meant then that sounds like people are negative toward you and bother you and somehow you want to be alone so much that anyone who tries to talk to you is annoying you..which isn't really introverted then.
I hope this helped and you'll improve the longer you're on this site. Have a nice day!
~Purple

Thanks for reviewing. I'm not saying I feel like this all the time, but sometimes I just want people to disappear. You probably know the feeling...
Extroverts just don't get it.

The changes you made improved by a long shot! :D Keep it up!

thanks so much! I hope you will continue reading my work.
