I sit on the motorcycle and stare at the rose-colored clouds against the fiery red skyline. People chatter and pass by as the voices of those around me mix and converge into one loud mumble. A few women shoot me flirty looks, but I don't pay them any attention. My heart is already elsewhere, with someone who cluelessly wears it around her pinky finger, dragging it along dirty streets and smelly canals, and I have neither strength nor will to get it back. I've given it to her years ago and only she can return it to me.
But she won’t return it to me in the manner in which she’ll restore my heart, no. She’ll return it crushed, turned into fine red powder that will fly away with the wind and rise to the skies. There, maybe my feelings will be free, but for now, I’m chained to someone whose future does not have me in it -- at least, not in the way I want to be.
I am stuck – stuck in a cage which only I made.
A cage called unrequited love.
We met each other years ago, from way back when we were both foolish and proud. I would carry her and twirl her, and in turn, she would laugh at me then tell me to go faster as she wrapped her arms around my neck. I would find it hard to breathe at times, yes, but if it was for her, then I was fine with it.
I would do anything to see her warm and innocent smile.
One day, when we grew older, she asked me to introduce her to sports, so I taught her what I was most familiar with: basketball. She would pout when she couldn't shoot a basket, so what I’d do was to carry her on my shoulders so that she could get the ball through the hoop. She'd gotten heavier by then, sure, but that contagious laughter once she scored was worth the sore shoulders.
I was just happy to see her happy.
Then there was the time when the street near her house got flooded due to strong rains and broken sewage lines. Sedans, hatchbacks, and SUVs couldn't pass through the roads, as the only vehicle that could withstand going through were large trucks. So, in order that I could bring her home, I carried her on my back and made her wear my raincoat. As I trudged through the murky waters, careful with my every step, she held the umbrella over our heads and whispered sweet apologies, embarrassed that I had to piggyback her. I shook my head and reassured her it was fine. I couldn't tell her why when she asked me, but I wished that somewhere in her heart she knew. Maybe I did get stinky, and maybe I did get scratched, but it was worth it not to have her cross the dark water, where broken lines and open manholes could have swallowed her whole.
I wanted to be the man who kept her safe.
When she wanted something, I’d be the first to know. I would go out, buy whatever it was, and give the item to her with a shy smile on my face. She, in turn, would grin at me and say "thank you", yet would barely talk afterwards, such as give me any follow up question like how my day had been or if I was fine or not. That was okay though. Waiting for her to talk to me again may have slowly killed me inside, but at least I got to be with her even for a little while.
I wished to be the person who’d provide her with what she needed and wanted.
There are a lot of wishes I have -- a lot of things I want to come true: that I be the one whom she leans on, that I'd be the boy who she can truly be herself with... but it's too late. There are no real chances I could take, because who am I, really?
I'm no one.
I'm just her family's lowly houseboy, currently tasked to buy ingredients for the food she wants to make for a guy who's coming over to the house. There is no room for me in her life -- there's no hope for my feelings to get across.
All I can do is serve the daughter of my employer.
All I can do is watch as another man unlocks the treasure that is her heart.
All I can and want to do is dream the winner was me and savor those tiny moments I can actually have with her.
Because there can be no place in her life for someone like me, right?

I really like how you did not reveal he works for her father until the end. It seems sad and haunted but a story almost all can relate to.
I love short stories like this, because you had me wanting to read what's next. but there is no more?
As far as the fine red powder, personally I would try and relate it to something like " sand that will swirl away into nothingness" something that people can relate to, something that they have seen.
Also the sentence at the end "All I can and want to do is dream the winner was me and savor those tiny moments I can actually have with her."
The sentence is a little off, maybe reword it to something along the lines of
All I can do is dream I won her love, and all I can want is to savor these moments we share..
something like that!
Thanks for the good read! I hope it was helpful!
Hey there, lily!

Yup, your review was helpful, so thank you for that. As for if there's anything more, there is, which is to be posted by my co-author, Skydreamer. If you want, I can ping you when it's published.
Cheers~
Heyo loves <3
. Anyways, I'll get straight to it.
I know it's mixed cheese and all, that doesn't stop me from shredding it. To top it off, I think this may the most enjoyable review I've written for a while. But let's keep that between us,
Let's have a look at your beginning paragraph, I know this is cheesy and cliche and all. But I think it's over doing it a bit. The first sentence alone made me groan out-loud. Rose-colored clouds and fiery red skyline basically screams clicheness, there are better ways to illustrate your point. Opt for more unique descriptions that also portrays the same feeling, and just another note, your MC is unrequited so why is it rose-colored, that sort of implies that everything is happy in his life. However, I quite like the metaphor in the latter part of this paragraph.
Hmmmmmmmm.
Hmmmmm.
Hmmm.
That bordered on something between an info-dump and a far too literal metaphor. Maybe it's both. I'm going to employ the age-old case of showing and telling. I think this entire chapter may have some of the things mentioned on there. You don't want to 'tell' us every single emotion through action, go beneath the surface and try to bring up more subtle hints and allow the readers to make these decisions for themselves. The same goes for the info-dump on their background, it's extremely flat. I'd much rather you put that information into context instead and show us.
Right.
I seriously hope that I'm going to be wrong with my guess as to the future plot-line, they fall in love due to some mysterious ways and that question is fulfilled with a righteous yes. If that's the case, please change it. Or, just alter this ending line because it is so cliche that it's almost as bad as the 'it was all a dream' line.
Anyways, my main critic here aside from the info-dump and the tone, is that there isn't much substance within this chapter. It serves as a mere introduction into the setting and characters of this new story and gives us a background, but apart from that there is nothing else. Not much world building or character development happening here, the entire chapter evolves around the MC stating the fact that he yearns for someone who he cannot love.
I would try and base your chapters around a pivotal point or to illustrate something about that character.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me. Keep me updated. <3
Forever yours.

Heya, Chef Flite~
. Haha, in all seriousness, thank you for the review. This'll make it easier to know what to look out for.
Pfft. N'aaww, don't worry about shredding the cheese. You're helping us make the fondue
'Til you get dipping food, cheers~

A very sincere stoem (basically a word I made that means a story with heavy poetic elements or an atmosphere that is strongly poetic) that has a nice beginning a a very charming end (though I am a little confused about it). The stoem has very strong realism that makes it seem more like a retelling of someone's story rather than work of fiction (unless it is a retelling of someone's story of course) and has strong sense of relatibility even if the situation differs from the one of the reader. The stoem is visually sound and the grammar is on par except for the things LeftyWriter pointed out, but other than that, this was definitely enjoyable and very appreciated.
Hey there, Isaac!
. To be honest, I wasn't really aware the story had poetic elements, so when you mentioned that it did, I read through it again, haha. Thank you for the review and I'm glad you liked the piece.

Interesting word you made
Cheers.
Hi, there! Lefty here to review!
Wow, this was really beautifully written. I really enjoyed reading this. Sometimes writing seems a little forced or you can tell that the writer really had to figure out what they were trying to say, but this just seemed like it was written so smoothly that it probably just flowed out when you sat down to write it, yeah? Anyway, onto a couple nitpicks...
I think saying "We met" would sound more natural than "We've known" in this sentence."
unlocks not unlock.
"All I can and want to do is dream."
That's all I found. Nice job! Your grammar and punctuation is very, very good. Your sentences flow nicely and I got a really good feel for your character. I was really rooting and feeling for him. I was drawn into your story, wondering what he was going to say next and I really, really liked how you described things. Very well done. Well, have a nice day and happy writing!

Hi, Lefty!

Thank you for the corrections. I've edited the piece now, guided by your review. I'm happy you like it.
Cheers~
This is a beautiful piece, stunning really. The story is so descriptive and perfectly flowing. It was easy read and I have only one small comment. Towards the end, you changed it, and made your character a person who works for the girls parents; this didn't fit, until then it felt as if he were talking about a best friend, not someone he works for. It affected the tone of the piece and definitely changed how you looked at it once you read it.
Heya, ooh! Thank you for the compliment.

Mm, yeah. I wanted the effect to be that way: that once you get to the end, you go back to the story and see how it changes your view. Overall though, it's still about a boy who fell in love with a girl.
Thank you for your review!
