Chapter One
" Cate, everything hurts, I'm so tired."
That same sentence had run through her mind only about five million times in the past five years. She knew he was strong, but Cate knew he couldn't be strong for much longer. She noticed the little things, the small tremors in his fingers or the shakiness in his voice. He had tried to hide it, but she could see right through it. She picked up her phone and typed her response. " Michael, listen to me. I know it hurts. But I'm right here and you of all people know I'm not going anywhere. You'll be okay, I promise." Cate pressed the send button and placed the lime green phone back on the dresser.
She had wanted Michael to open up to her, they were like siblings after all. But she wasn't sure if she could handle all of it at once. Her phone buzzed.
" I feel like I need to go." It read
" Well go, do anything but this. You need to go and sleep. It'll get better if you do that." She typed back.
"Why do I feel like I've made a life ruining decision?"
The words stared coldly and confusedly at her. Cate bit her lip in remorse and sympathy. She knew the feeling. "Because you're being honest." Was her simple answer. She knew that to be true because every time her past was brought back from the dark edges of time, it was key to ruining her future. Honesty liked to ruin things.
The small typing bubble appeared and re-appeared. Cate wondered what Michael would say. In truth, she was scared for him, she wanted to protect him- thing was though, she didn't know how. Another text buzzed in.
"Cate, I can't do this."
The phone slipped from her fingers and onto the dresser as she rushed to her closet for a jacket and chucks. That was it, she had to make sure he wouldn't do anything stupid. Slipping out of her bedroom window, Cate rushed through the soggy grass ad stormy sky to her friend's house. As she came upon the two story Tudor style house, she passed under the hedge and towards the back of his yard. She knew that he wouldn't be in his room, he rarely ever was. He was always in his little hideout, a clubhouse near some old and torn down fence. Without warning, she barged in, breathless and shivering, but relieved to see her friend. Her eyes searched him as he sat in the corner cry heaving. There was no strength left in his solemn face, no appearance of the old Michael, just a hollow shell of his former self. It made Cate cringe, the fact that someone could go down so fast astounded her. Michael lifted his head up to reveal bloodshot eyes and tear stains marking trails on his usually smiling face. His lips were swollen from biting and his voice inaudible and raspy, but she knew what he had said.
"Sissy?"
The pleading in his voice tore into her. Her heart slowly slid to her toes as a sense of pain swirled in her stomach. Surely a burn would feel better than this. "Michael..." She whispered, falling beside the younger teen," It's okay. I'm here now, I've got you."
She felt his hands grip her tightly, desperate for some humanly comfort. The girl passed her arms around Michael's shoulder blades and pressed him into her chest. Cate shouldn't have been startled when he let out a weak sob, but she was. Michael's body quaked against her as the thunder outside shook the wooden walls of the two room clubhouse. Michael had told her that when he fell, he fell hard. She let out a saddened sigh, he was right.
Michael didn't know what to think when Cate had barged in, dripping and pale faced. In his blurred state of mind, he couldn't wrap himself around it. He didn't need to be comforted, he could handle this himself. That's what he had done for the past ten years anyways. He didn't need her. But seeing her face, feeling her arms wrap around him and hold him he realized he did need her. Michael hid his face in the nape her of neck as hot tears escaped from his eyes.
What had he done?
The question erupted in his mind like a gunshot, she now knew his deepest and blackest secret. He tensed in her embrace and became rigid. " I shouldn't have told you... I-"
"You're not fake, you're not what you think you are." Cate responded, cutting him off, the desperation in her voice evident," Knowing that won't change what I think of you. You're a fantastic person who I hold incredibly dear." She whispered gently in his ear. The boy leaned heavily on her chest as the storming winds screamed and pushed against the metal roof.
He lifted his head, voice full of shame," It won't?"
Cate gave a motherly smile," No. Nothing can change that."
Michael sighed, with anxiety or exhaustion... or both. Cate couldn't tell.
They sat in silence, Cate holding Michael for what seemed forever, but she didn't care. It ripped her heart into shreds as he trembled in a tangle in her arms. His black waves of hair swung to the side in an unruly and sweaty fashion. Her eyes traced him. Michael was built like a tank. Not an ounce of him was weak. The little 5'5" boy had made 200 lb linemen fly onto their backs, he could outrun anyone triple his size. He could do anything he set his mind to... he didn't seem human. But, here he was, in her arms, quaking in fear of her rejection. Cate closed her eyes, forcing her own tears back into her throat and rested her chin on his head. She would never reject him... she couldn't. They were just too much alike.

Ayyyyy ashlingwolf here! Happy review day!
I see this has multiple chapters, which I look forward to reading and reviewing as well, but I thought it would be best to start about this at the beginning.
I really want to continue reading this. It's not particularly suspenseful, but it's interesting and engaging, and the plot (so far) is great. The emotion in this story is unreal simply because it's so real. One wouldn't think that so few words could invoke such, but Michael is so purely feeling awful, and through his clear effect on Cate it's obvious that she really cares about him. This just of reminds me that no one can be happy all the time, and that suddenly, with no warning, one's life can just be thrown down. After this, I really want to read more. I want to know what happened to Michael. Seriously, something had to be really big for this sort of raw sadness. This is so far a piece that is very strong, very descriptive, and has a great voice.
There are a few typos, but they're few and far between. I'm not going to waste your time pointing them out as i'm sure other reviewers have already done so. Just remember to always proofread!
This has been great, and I can't wait to keep going.

Hiya!
So, a slightly late stalk of your portfolio revealed this little piece of amazingness! Why oh why you didnt make me read this.... *sigh* I've been missing out. Ahh well, I found it now, so prepare for review full of me going on about how good this is.
But first, a couple of super minor little things.
Numero uno:
Okay, so here, as I said super minor, the K shouldn't be capitalised because it wasn't the end of a sentence.
Number two:
The gaps in the paragraphs are a little weird in terms of size, like they go from normal paragraph gaps to massive paragraph gaps... little thing again.
Last one:
When you switch from it being Cate's perspective to Michael's perspective I'd maybe just section it off a little bit so that it's a little clearer. Like maybe if you used a few *** thingys, or something? Just a suggestion that one
Okay, so whoa! Talk about gripping! I want more like right now! Which is exactly what I'm going to do after I've finished this review. But, I love your characters, and how you've shown their bond is amazing, like you can really see the connection between them. I want to know more about their backstory and what's happened to get Michael into such a state. I love love love how easy you've made everything to picture, it's like I could see the events all happening in my head as you wrote them.
But yeah.... I feel a serious case of the feels coming on.
And a long story cut short, this is incredible!!! I LOVE IT!!!
Hey, BasicWaffle here!
Praise: I really enjoyed this it was well written and well thought out. Your grammar was really nice and this chapter made me curious. I want to read more. I wanna what's wrong with Micheal. I wanna know Cate's and Micheal's history. You really intrigued me and that is a very important factor when your making your first chapter.
Suggestions: I think that the chapter went really fast and you should maybe add a tad more to it. Also you should think about indenting the first line it will make it really stick out and add some emphasis.
Grammar: I saw something that wasn't really a mistake but could sound better. In the second line you should change run to ran since the rest of the story is in past tense. Other than that I saw no other grammar mistakes.
Overall, I loved this I enjoyed this a lot and I can't wait to read and review the next chapter of your novel!
Bye, have a nice day!

Thank you! I'm new to writing present realistic fiction stories like this. I'm usually in the fantasy/fairytales genre, so to hear your praise is quite nice. The next few chapters will be quite longer, this one was just to get my feet wet. You shall see their histories quite soon
Thanks!
This is defiantly an interesting story line. Honestly, I'm a little confused as to what's going on here, I just don't quite get it. But, I do like the plot and the line that you already have going. This is only the first chapter after all, and the way that you ended it made me crave to see the next chapter. I really want to know what is happening with Cate and Michael and everything else, it really is something that I'd like to read more of. I'll probably understand as I go along. Now for the review part of this passage that tells you what you need to improve on. I only saw a couple of things, that are an easy fix and wouldn't be that hard to improve. First off, in the beginning if this piece, I saw a minor mistake:

"That same sentence had (run through) her mind only about five million times in the past five years." Now this improvement is just mostly a biased opinion about what I like better. But, I would change the "run" to "ran", and the "through" to "throughout". Just because run is present tense as ran is past tense; and your sentence sounds more past tense to me. So you should change this sentence to "That same sentence had 'ran throughout' her mind about five million times in the past five years." Another minor mistake that I found is once again a very easy fix:
When the character was talking to Cate and texting her or whatever, you put the text messages in quotation marks. Now, I don't know if this is correct but I don't think that you should make the messages look like dialogue. It may confuse the reader and make them think that the characters are talking face to face instead of texting. But, I could still be wrong. But, if it were me, I would've put the text messages in italics instead so that the readers know that the texts are something different than normal dialogue. But that's probably also just a preferred choice. Now, this last one, I'm not sure if it's a mistake or just something that I don't understand:
"The phone slipped from her fingers and onto the dresser as she rushed to her closet for a (jacket and chucks)." Now I'm not quite sure what a jacket and chucks are, maybe you could explain it to me because I just don't understand. It may just be a typo as well but I was truly confused when reading that line. Anyway, other than that, I don't think that there is anything really wrong. Keep on writing this, I really would like to read more and continue understanding this new book plot. Never stop writing.
Hey!! Thank you for your review. Yes, in the next few chapters, I will lay a more solid foundation, like go back a bit in the past so you can get to know the characters a bit better:) and yes, I shall fix those minor details. No big deal:)... Chucks (my mom said) are converse tennis shoes. That's just the old fashioned name (?). Thank you for your review. I will keep you posted! And btw, just a little secret, this is story is based off of a situation that a friend and I had a month or so ago. It really brought us together, so I had to create a story. (Of course with his permission). I shall never stop writing! Thanks

Cool. I will be sure to read more of this as you continue on this novel. And thanks for telling me what chucks are, I never knew that before, that's actually interesting.
Thank you:) and no problem, I just learned about the chucks as well:)
