A Deal with the Devil

(This is different than what I usually post. I just thought that I'd try writing a short story. Hope you like it.)

A Deal with the Devil

Hell found me. And before I knew it, my whole life changed. I glanced up at Henry, asking him with my eyes what had just happened, but even he had no words. Hell is a terrible place, a place where only darkness and despair lives. And that day, that day I truly found the meaning of hatred; and sadness.

Two Hours Earlier

Music sounded throughout the house, girls dancing next to guys as they showed inappropriate contact. Henry and I stood next to each other, both still disgusted that we came to this party in the first place. I glanced down at the eerie glow of my cell-phone, trying to re-direct my gaze back down to something more productive. The music made a large headache form between my eyes, making me rub my temples for comfort. I felt like I was in a dream, the music made everything look and feel like some nightmare; a nightmare of which I am forever stuck in a spiral of social awkwardness.

“What are you boys doing standing here all alone?” Vanessa said, her main motive trying to attract attention towards herself. I glanced up from my phone and shook my head, my hood almost falling over my face.

“Vanessa, just leave us alone.” I retorted, while placing my phone in my back pocket. She repositioned her body and ran her fingers through her dark brown hair; as if by doing this she proved a point. She placed her right hand on her hip and scoffed.

“Oh Johnny, you know that you’re not the boss of me.”

“Well, as long as I’m your brother I will be.” I took the hood off of my head, “Or do you want Mom and Dad to know that you came to this party, when they specifically told you not to? Do you want them to catch you drinking again?” I said, in my orderly older brother tone. Vanessa has always hated how I “stop her from ever doing anything remotely fun”. Believe me, I don’t like watching her either; but my parents tell me that I have to. Vanessa has a history of getting into more trouble than what is needed.

“Whatever.” She said, almost falling over.

“Oh, and Vanessa; make sure that you don’t drive home, I can tell that you’re drunk.” I said to her as she began to walk away. She turned around and stuck her middle finger up at me; making myself fall over in laughter. Henry laughed as well, his bellowing chuckle in complete sink with mine.

“Dude,” Henry said, looking over at me with his gray eyes. “your sister is hot! You should put in a good word for me.” he rubbed his hands, looking like a complete dork by the minute.

“Like she’d ever go out with you, man.” I replied, nudging him in the ribs.

“Hey, you never know. Parties like these are magical places. Not to mention that she’s so wasted that she won’t know what she’d doing.”

“Dude, gross! That’s my sister you’re talking about!” I yelled, almost punching him in the face for that reaction. He laughed and went on dreaming about dating my sister, a dream that in my opinion is more like a nightmare. I looked around the disastrous house some more, trying to find more drunk people that I could laugh at. These parties are the stupidest things that high school has ever created. People that say that high school is the best years of your life, are obviously smoking something that they shouldn’t be. I turned my gaze around the room some more as I searched for more people to laugh at; that’s when my gaze met hers.

She was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen. Her blonde hair spilled over her shoulders, standing out in the blackness of her shirt. Her face was flawless, as if she were too good to be true. Her black shorts matched her shirt, as she stood in the corner of the room, surrounded by jocks. I tried my best to look away while she looked preoccupied with everyone else. But there was just something about her, something that just made me fall in love with her instantly.

“Dude, dude you okay?”

I barely heard Henry as I kept my eyes glued to the woman. Her features too striking and beautiful to forget. Her eyes continued to meet mine as well; she barely spoke to the guys surrounding her. Soon, I saw her give her cup to one of the boys surrounding her; and then she walked over to me. She took long strides as she smiled, her blue eyes piercing deep into my soul. When she reached me she placed her hand in mine, and brought her lips close to my ears.

“Come with me John. We have an important matter to talk about.” She whispered. I could feel her slight breath brush my ear as she pulled me out of the house. We went behind the place, away from anyone who could see us. I felt so star struck, I could barely move. She came close to me and made sure that I could see her face, my insides still feeling like liquid.

“You are bored with your life. Aren’t you John?” she asked. I nodded; my inner thoughts just seemed to appear in her head. “You want a way out; a way to get everything that you have always wanted. John, I can help you.” I looked at her in disbelief.

“How?”

“I can give you what you want. Fame, fortune. The only thing that I ask, is that I get something in return.”

“What do want?”

“I want your friend’s, and your family’s souls. I want you to hand them over to me.” I didn’t know what to think. Her blue eyes were so striking, she had me in a trance that I wanted desperately to get out of. "John, do we have a deal?" as she said that a long piece of paper appeared in her right hand. She smiled as she handed me a pen. "All you have to do is sign. And agree." I looked at her, her face so beautiful, I couldn't resist.

I picked up the pen and signed my name, the black ink showing my selfishness. "Okay." I said. Soon the paper disappeared as she went around the corner. Her smile creeping up her face

She nodded and left me alone in the darkness, her blond hair flowing out behind her. I broke free from the trance, looking around at my surroundings unsure what to think. Soon, I heard screams and loud sounds come from the house. I raced inside, only to find fire, blood, and bodies. Some were dead others were burning alive in the fire. I watched as the blonde woman held my sister in her hand, her neck squeezed tight in her fist.

“No! No, stop!” I screamed.

“It’s too late John. You signed them over to me.” I watched as she took their souls, enjoying seeing them die. I watched my sister die right in front of me. I glanced up at Henry, asking him with my eyes what had just happened, but even he had no words. Hell is a terrible place, a place where only darkness and despair lives. Soon, she too took Henry by the neck and killed him as well. My heart sagged with guilt as I watched them die. I stood there, alone at that house smelling the scent of burning flesh.

“I just made a deal with the Devil.” I said to myself, as tears fell down my cheeks. That day, hell found me. That day, I learned death comes at a cost. Deals made in hell, always end in flames.

Soon cops came to the scene. They cleaned up the mess and asked me what happened. I told them that I was as surprised as they were as they swept the street, looking for suspects. They helped me into an ambulance and told me to let them check me out; to make sure that I didn't have any injuries. And then, I saw her. The blonde woman. Her face was still beautiful, while her hands were covered in blood. She placed her finger to her mouth, as if she were being clever by saying, "this is our little secret". After the feds left the sight, she came over to me, placing her hand on my shoulder. Then whispered, "I will give you everything that you want. But you belong to me. You are mine." she gripped my shoulder, making a pain screech throughout it. A deep guilt rose up in me, one that I'd never felt before.

"I am yours."

This is very interesting, good job with the story.
For one, the characters seem realistic even thought this is a supernatural story.
For two, what is presumed to be the devil is portrayed in a interesting way, although the seductive lady has been used countless times, and is a little bit cliché.
And for three, the story shows psychologically, what making a deal with the devil, or one of his cronies would be like.
In all, this is a very interesting story that realistically shows a simulated deal with the devil.

Thank you. I am glad that somebody likes it.

As a lover of fantasy and the supernatural, the story title caught me.

But it was hard to stay with it. The characters don't feel very real, but like they're flat and serving as mouthpieces for the story. The sister felt more like the overdone party-girl stereotype than a real person, the friend didn't seem to have any reason to be there other than his dialogue, and the MC felt flat as well.

While reading, I just wasn't sure why I should care about him handing over his family's souls. There's not much backstory to make it feel like a significant thing - we only know about his sister's rebellion against their parents' wishes and that's really it.

Good story overall, and a good plot idea. Just needs work for it to make an impact on readers.

Thanks. I will work on that.

Adleweiss Review

Hi Ashley123, I'm Adelweiss! And I'm here for a review. This is my first one, and I chose yours because "A Deal with the Devil" sounded like it would be a really interesting thing to read, and once I read it I knew that there were those average flaws every writer makes, but you could easily tell it was well written overall, and it was deep enough to put the picture into the readers head like it was a movie. And the ending is magnificent, where you can really see John and that he regrets ever meeting the blonde girl, and when he seals his guilt with "I am yours." lets the reader know that he is totally surrendering to her. Anyway it was good, and hope to see more of your work. :)

Thanks. And I will look for those flaws, this is just my rough draft.

Hi Ashley123, acm here for a review! This is going to be a pretty short review because I didn't see much that I would change. I really liked this piece, because the meaning and lesson weren't clearly shown so the reader would have to look a bit deeper. Even so, I had a few suggestions.

“Okay. I hand them over.”

I think that you meant for the ending quotation mark to be placed after the word 'okay'. It's a simple mistake, and I only caught it on my second time reading it.
I also felt like this line needed more description. All it says is that the character hands the the souls over. How is that done? Are they in his pocket? Does he grab them from the party? Does he sign a contract and they appear? I think that you should spend some more time elaborating on the giving of the souls.

And try your best to resist temptation.

I don't think this last line was needed. It is already clearly summarized-- the blond woman is temptation, and if he had resisted her and her offer, then he would not have suffered the consequences. The last line is unnecessary.

Lastly, I feel like there wasn't much evidence for the main character to want fame or money. We just see him unhappily sitting at a party. His motive might have seemed more realistic if we saw something wrong with his life. Maybe a bully came up to him or he saw a girl at the party that he loved, but she hated him. The reader needs more evidence of the main character's unhappiness.

Anyways, I really liked this piece overall. It had a good message, and a good setting description. The things I mentioned in the review weren't very noticeable and should be pretty easy to fix. I can't wait to read more of your work!
