Lovers in Blue

In the beginning of time, Sky was just a mess of smoke. It stretched infinite but was almost void. One fateful day, everything changed when Sun came to her side. Having pity on her devastating existence , he adopted her as a daughter and helped her on her feet. He gave her light and worked with her to make air and clouds. With time, her station drastically improved and she soon became a beaming presence in blue. The hours Sun went away, she's mourn in black- symbolising what she was before him. She missed him till dusk until sunrise and she went back to her serene blue self again.

She grew old a beautiful girl and talks about her stretched far and wide. One day when she had gotten of age, Sun began to think of potential suitors for her. He finally settled on the fearsome Thunder to be only one worthy enough of her brilliance. The proud father went to discuss the prospect with Sky but she gently turned down the suggestion. Sky preferred someone gentler and someone had already caught her eye.

The Sea was Sky's biggest admirer. He is endless, just like her. They'd meet sometimes on the horizon. One fine day, he had gifted the lady a portrait of herself at sunset, which thanks to his reflective tendencies, captured every detail of her brilliance effortlessly. He was the best painter nature ever knew, and now a famed lover too. Of his flirtations, the Sky blushes red. The Sea turned red in return too, mimicking her. He whispered a declaration in her ear, "The next time I turn red, I'd turn you mine."

Since then, Sky has kept to her standard blue, knowing the Sea can't change color by himself. So unless she became red herself, she could delay that fated day. She looks for the perfect moment to marry him. She was waiting for the perfect opportunity to tell her father of him. For better or for worse, this conversation with him is when it gets decided once and for all.

Sky's blunt refusal caught Sun off guard. For a daughter who he had raised with so much care, he thought she'd be grateful at this arrangement. But she had indirectly challenged his better judgement. Is this dishonour to be cost of his kindness? His pride broken, Sun burned in fuming rage. Unaware of this, Sky revealed Sea to be her lover, and he one she intended to marry. Sea had been watching this exchange from beneath. Intending to make a grand show, he turned red in proposal. Sky looked below in bewilderment. Sky's presence gave Sea air. Her love has made him brim with nutrients. In these ideal conditions, Sea had enlisted the help of algae to make his love confession. He was seeking not only the permission of Sky, but also the blessing of Sun for her hand in marriage. Sky blushed at his grand act innocently.

Their love was so obvious at this moment in time. But Sun was blinded by anger to see it. Thinking him too low for her respected station, Sun forbade her to pursue this relationship further. This broke her heart to pieces. "I can't live without him, Father", pleaded Sky. But Sun would not relent. He was acting on his wounded ego. Sea's proposal hanged in the silence. Sky knew she had to make a choice.

Sun had the upper hand here. To accept Sea's proposal, she must turn red in return- they had discussed before. This wasn't possible without the Sun's consent. For as long as Sun didn't set upon the horizon, Sky had to remain blue. Thus, her father dictated her choice for a happily ever after. The warning was clear- let go of the man and stay an obedient daughter. But Sky wasn't one to be forced beyond her will. She was just as stubborn as her father.

Nothing could keep her from being with Sea, even her own father. Lacking the Sun's approval, Sky took a mighty form in protest. She returned to the black she had been before, letting dark clouds take over. They held the Sun captive, making him powerless. In agony, the Sky wept in rain. The Sea, being a true lover, matched his colour to hers. His gigantic waves mirrored the turmoil she felt within. As drops of water hit the Sea, he knew it was a yes. They were finally united, despite the worst circumstances and obstacles. Thunder crackled. He, too, stood in support of a union no one could dismiss as anything other than fated.

Seeing his daughter's displeasure, Sun realised the pain he caused. The confinement of the clouds gave him a chance to reflect upon himself. His anger now put to rest, Sun realised the grave mistake he had done. He requested the clouds to go away and let him repent. The clouds obliged, ridding the sky of it's misery. Seeing the lovers wrapped in each other's embrace, the Sun began to set. The Sky smiled and ran back to embrace her father. He kissed her on the forehead, bidding his goodbye. She knew that without him, she couldn't live a happy life. Now with him at her side, she has everything she could ever want. He gave Sky's hand to Sea at the horizon, wishing them a happy life ahead. With this, Sky and Sea became eternal lovers no one could seperate.

Over time, they've become synonymous with life. Without Sky as in algal blooms, Sea begins to suffocate and kills everything in the process. She's become the very essence of his existence. They must not part if the nature is to not perish. To this day, they flirt in their changing colours- such has always been their way.

Hey Alex 😊 A short story is much more up my alley =D
Hm I find it a bit strange that we are talking about celestial objects and then you say something like “the devastated girl”. Kinda makes it seem less grand ☹
I also don’t quite understand what you mean with “her station improved”. Because we started out with knowing her as a mess of smoke, a void, but given that we have no context, this doesn’t quite feel like a bad thing? And why “station”? What exactly has improved here? She’s no longer a void?
Aww I like this phrasing: “They'd meet sometimes on the horizon.” And the double meaning. I wish there was more of this and less… personification :3
This one is also brilliant: “he had gifted the lady a portrait of herself at sunset,” and I feel like the “reflective tendencies” you mention in the next part of the sentence kinda lessens the brilliance? Since it’s self-explanatory and the other part is kinda overexplaining it?
I like this: “knowing the Sea can't change color by himself. “
This feels like an unwelcome repetition: “She was waiting for the perfect”. You either make it three sentences with “perfect” to establish a pattern or you have to think of a completely different phrasing here.
There’s also something wrong with the tempus here: “For better or for worse, this conversation with him is when it gets decided once and for all.” I know it shouldn’t be “is” here. Because she’s talking abt an upcoming conversation and in addition a hypothetical one, because she cannot be certain abt where it will go. Maybe with “would be”… But then the entire sentence sounds even stranger. Maybe you can be more specific and say something like “it’s this conversation which would decide their fate” or something? I’m not entirely sure. If you want this to signal the moment she does indeed talk to Sun, then it’s the “gets decided” that brings the tempus trouble btw xd
Ugh I just hate it when ppl aren’t allowed to make their own decisions. I don’t care that Sun styled himself Sky’s father and sunk so much attention into her; he does not get to make decisions like this for her.

Oh so Sea can turn colour without having to mimic Sky! And he does it to make a statement :3
Ach, if Sun doesn’t want to allow her to turn red, a smalllllll forest fire might do the trick =D *cough*
Nice! That is cool idea: “letting dark clouds take over. They held the Sun captive, making him powerless.”
Oh this is also brilliant! “the clouds gave him a chance to reflect upon himself. “

I really like the idea and you have some really great lines and metaphors in there. I just think you didn’t explore the concept to its fullest potential and fell back on too many humanizations for me to enjoy it completely :3

A few typos and grammar things:
“, He adopted her “ – he
“ she's mourn in back“ Shouldn’t it be “she’d”? And “black”?
“He finally settled on the fearsome Thunder to be only one worthy enough of her brilliance“ – either “the only one” or “Thunder, the only one” but the “the” is necessary in either case =D
“to be cost of his kindness?” no to be, replace it with “the”. I mean it …is technically correct. So, maybe it’s just that it sounds off to me?
“and he one she intended to marry.” – the one

Woah, thanks for such a detailed review, Tikaya! I understand now why you always said stories are your speciality.

I find it a bit strange that we are talking about celestial objects and then you say something like %u201Cthe devastated girl%u201D. Kinda makes it seem less grand %u2639

Duly noted! I get you so well here. Personifications were my least favorite part about this as well. But in a legend comparing them to humans or gods, its almost inevitable. Perhaps I ought to work on my phrasing though.

She%u2019s no longer a void?[/quote ]

I mean, yes technically. But mainly she's no longer black with smoke, but light blue with refreshing air and beautiful clouds. I've compared it to a noble's station rising - from poor to wealthy. She's become much more appealing overnight.

Since it%u2019s self-explanatory and the other part is kinda overexplaining it?

I do that at times, I'm afraid. I'll fix it there!

it%u2019s this conversation which would decide their fate

Love this suggestion!

I just think you didn%u2019t explore the concept to its fullest potential and fell back on too many humanizations for me to enjoy it completely

Genuine, I shall work upon it.

Also thank you for sorting the typos, it makes editing for me a lot easier!

No problem Alex :) I'm glad you wrote a short story I could read and I did like the concept! At times it felt more like a poem than a story though with how much I had to put my interpretion hat on XD [That was actually my favourite part!]

Hello there, human! I'm reviewing using the YWS S'more Method today!

Shalt we commence with the jinxed S’more?

Top Graham Cracker - Sky is in love with Sea, but Sun wants her to marry Thunder. Sky, furious about this, makes everything gray and Sea helps her out (Thunder too!), until Sun agrees to let her marry Sea. <3

Slightly Burnt Marshmallow - I have no recommendations to make as of right now, but if you would like to edit this, then you may.

Chocolate Bar - I love the mythological vibes this story gives off, it feels like something I may have read in childhood. But most of all, I love the themes of love’s strength and how it can triumph anything, even when love is being threatened. Another thing I liked was how even Thunder supported their relationship, because he knows what true love is.

Closing Graham Cracker - Overall, a very lovely short story on the great and terrifying powers of true love! I enjoyed reading this and I’m glad that there was a happy ending. Now, I wish you…

An amazing day/night! ^v^

Thanks for rhe crisp review, creeper! :D
