Prolouge: Milo

Why? Why had Dr. Dae helped me? Why did Dae help me escape? I had always wanted to leave my whole life but I never understood how hard it would have been to live in the world after being held in the venter my whole life. I always thought; Dae must have known they planned on doing something worse to me, it always had a soft spot for me. As if I was its child. I was grateful either way, I was getting out, leaving this awful place behind. I was pampered, picked at, altered and I will never forget when how they “played” with my brain.

Dr. D walked over to my bed quickly undoing the restraints on my feet, arms, and neck. Dae helped me up and we walked out of the room. Be quiet and don’t make a sound, you are getting out of here tonight!. I repeated Dae’s first’s words in my head over and over again. I kept my mouth shut as we walked through several long hallways. Going down’s stairs, through doors that led to others. It was a complete maze and I knew why kids never escaped from here. They was no way they could find themselves outside without help.

We finally made our way to a large double door and when we went out, the world emerged around us. I breathed in the city air. Such a new sensation to the stuffy sterilized rooms of the Medicaid. It almost suffocated me really; it was a mixture of grime, smoke, and Co2. Yet it was laced with the smell of really trees and grass, such an eerily freshness to a boy like me.

Dae handed me a backpack, I didn’t bother looking inside yet because Dae seemed preoccupied with other things then letting me shuffle through the contents of the bag. Dae came close to me, pressing it’s lips against my ear.

“Run.” Dr. Dae whispered, “Don’t ever think  of coming back. Just Run.” I backed up a little inspecting Dae uncertainly but it’s face was serious and gave me a look as if I should already be gone by now. I did as I was told and I ran down the street. I glanced back to thank Dae but it was gone.

I could never tell if Dae was a female or male. Dae’s hair was cut short but most of the doctor’s hair was like that. Its face was relatively gender neutral and Dae’s chest was quite flat for a girl. When I was younger I came to the conclusion that Dae must have been a genostic. A she-male created by the Medicaid center. They thought if human’s had no gender it would help reduce diseases, created for each sex. This experiment was done 10 years ago, and still no thesis has been presented to the board.

I kept sprinted through the city. Building shot up all around me. Nobody was on the streets. All the buildings were high-rises and look they were about to crumble to the ground. I learned about this growing up, but I had never seen it. It was beautiful yet absolutely terrifying. The streets were scattered with filth and debris, shuttered were closed on al windows. It was like a ghost town. I was sure any moment a shape shifter would jump out of the bushes and murder me. I turned several blocks trying to create as much distant between me and the Medicaid Center located at the center of town. I had heard of other smaller center around down and I knew how to find them so I stayed away from any symbol pointing me towards this area’s. I started to run out of breath so I hide myself at the edge of an alley behind a dumpster. It was grimy along the outside but I tried to ignore the moldy organic material squishing against my side. I opened the backpack Dae had gave me and found a light coat, gloves, a water bottle,  beef jerky, a small pocket knife, $20 dollar’s, and extra socks.

This was my first time out of the Medicaid Center. Ever. Well, at least that I can remember, my parents gave me up to the Hospital when I was barely a year old. I didn’t even have a name. I had always been called by my Hospital number. I looked down at my shirts which had the stitched numbers, 6456. That what people had called me my whole life, 6456.

I took a sip from the water bottle, I knew I had to conserve it so I promised myself I would only take water when I was thirsty and only enough to keep my throat wet. I heard siren’s going off and a truck whizzed by, the sound slowly faltered off. Maybe they were looking for me, or maybe they need to take a patient to another Medicaid Center. I didn’t know but I knew I had to keep moving.

I decided it would be safer to go through the alley then on the main road. Since all the streets seemed deserted at night I assumed the Watchers would be out looking for new victims to sink their greedy teeth into. The alley was filthy but at least it had some life to it, cats, mice, and insects. It was something, I’ll give it that. The alley came to a dead end which I thought might be an okay place to sleep since I was really tired. I started to lay down the coat as a bed when I heard the creaking of a shutter open and it slammed against the brick wall. I jolted around to see an old woman who looked like a witch starring down at me. I didn’t know whether to run or stay but I felt frozen in my spot so I just stared back.

“Boy!” She scorched out, when we were younger the nurses used to read us fairy tales and she reminded me of the witch from Hansel and Gretel. Did people outside of the Medicaid’s eat other humans? The thought never occurred to me before. “What’cha doin’ on the street at dis time of day?!” Her voice was very horsed and had a peculiar sound to it, nothing like I had heard before really. I didn’t know what to say so I shrugged. “Go to that bloody red door there. I’ll meet’cha there. The Med’s gunna pluck you up otherwise!”

She was a very enthusiastic woman. I didn’t know whether to trust her or not but I didn’t really think I had much of a choice. I had nowhere else to go. So I did as she asked. The witch woman did not actually meet me there, it was more of an, I waited they for a couple minutes and next thing I knew I was being pulled up the stairs. I looked up to notice no door on the walls. She must live at the top. She stop my on the second flight of stairs and looked at me quick she noticed the numbers on my shirt and she smiled. I got instantly scarred. What if she returned me to them? But she kept pulling me up the stairs.

“You’re a got away, are you?” she asked, this woman really confused me though because she didn’t even give me time to answer. “I don’t usually help you type, but I like you. If you’re okay with I think I’ll keep you.” She kept walking up the stairs, mumbling to herself and would randomly say something louder that she would want me to hear.

“I’m Opal. I’m surprised you so dark. We don’t see you type much, did they do that to you or are you always like that?!” She asked, this time she looked back at me as if waiting for an answer.

“My file say’s I’m from the Philippines.” I said, we made it to the top of the stairs and we go through another door. When we entered the door incense filled my nose, it was beautiful really. Three other teens were sitting on couching in the apartment eating cheesed macaroni. The two boys looked up, but the girl kept her eyes attached to a magazine, the pages flipped through her fingers.

“I hope you okay living with a bunch of whiteys like us!” Opal screeched. I realized that this was going to be my life now, living with these people. I decided to trust them; I didn’t think they would eat me at least. This was my life now, for better or for worse.

Okay so I started of confused on why you called Dae an it, but then I kept reading and I TOTS understand now.

'Building shot up all around me.'
'Buildings shot up all around me.'

'and look they were about to crumble to the ground.'
'and looked like they were about to crumble to the ground.'

'on al windows.'
'on all windows.'

Wish you could have described what she was looking at a little bit more though.

'I had heard of other smaller center around down and I knew how to find them so I stayed away from any symbol pointing me towards this area???s.'
You might want to look at this sentence again. But so far I'm liking where the story is going. or where I think it's going.

I am just curious-have I ever been on the bottom quote-thingy?
