This is officially the last part of chapter one. Kablam. It's... longer. I'm so sorry. I couldn't find a place where it could be conveniently split up. I kind of feel like it's a bit rushed, but. I dunno.
I was back again the next day, a coffee for myself in my left hand, and a get well soon card from my brother in the right. I nudged my way through the door when my knock was answered, automatically smiling when Braz's face lit up. I'd been trying to convince myself that he hadn't meant it when he said he wanted me to come visit him again, but this was- it was reassurance enough that he had. I reminded myself to attribute at least half of it to pain medication; people didn't just forgive that easily. Not even the forgiveness masters.
"Hey." The word was out before the door swung closed behind me.
Mai was sitting on a chair next to the bed, Francis perched on the edge of the bed itself. A game of Uno was spread out on a tray over Braz's lap, but the entire thing was abandoned as soon as I'd spoken up. Braz waved a half a wave- just stuck his hand up and let it drop again.
"Hi, Parker," his mother said, feigning a warmness that I could see through with ease. Her smile was tight, and her voice wasn't much better for the wear. Which was... fine, I suppose. A good thing, maybe. I'd hurt her son once- a little hostility was warranted.
I smiled at her anyway, dipping my head in Francis's direction when she offered a wave of her own. "I'll stay quiet until you're finished the game," I offered, setting the coffee down on the nightstand before retrieving a chair from the far wall.
Francis shrugged. "I just won. Again."
I lifted a brow. "Again?"
"Third time in a row," Braz answered for her, muttering under his breath. "She's a master of the craft."
I snorted, holding the card out when Braz slumped back with a quiet, "It's from Koby." The boy didn't even know Brazil. He'd still been a baby when we stopped talking. I'd stopped talking. Whatever. "He says you're the dragon. The city you're burning is apparently 'all the stupid people', to quote him."
Mai looked up, eyebrows pinched in concern, the corners of her mouth twisted up in amusement. "Can I see it?" She held out a hand, and once Braz was done smiling and shaking his head at it, he handed it off. Francis was already up and standing behind Mai's chair. I left them to be entertained.
"Oh. He wanted to throw in a disclaimer about who wrote the 'get well soon'. Which was me." I pulled my legs onto the chair and crossed them, one elbow per knee, left hand to my jaw, right hand to my coffee cup.
Braz laughed under his breath and seemed to zone out for a second, blinking himself back to the present to look at his sister. "Can you put it on my nightstand when you're done with it, France?" He settled back. "I think I wanna keep it there."
She gave him an off-hand nod and put it down, the fold holding it up. He smiled at it with glassy eyes before they started to droop. Mai reached over and took the tray off of the bed, setting it on a counter behind her, under a window with ugly, purple curtains blocking a view of, I assumed, the parking lot. "Braz?" she whispered.
Braz's eyes fluttered back open, eyebrows crinkling under the weight of drowsiness. "Yeah?"
"Will you be alright here for the night? I need to feed your sister."
The girl in question looked up, expression screaming protest. Her mouth closed as soon as it opened, and her shoulders fell. I caught the glance she shot at Braz. Whatever lightheartedness I'd been feeling before vanished, replaced with the same heaviness as yesterday.
Braz nodded weakly, rolling his face into his pillow. "Yeah. Nicky and Michael will be here soon, anyway." He opened his one still-visible eye to smile at me. It was a scared smile, though. One that was digging for affirmation. "And Parker's here."
I managed to smile back at him. "Yup. Till they kick me out."
Mai paused for a second, and I couldn't even make myself look at her. I'd never seen a woman look that distraught before. That tired. And his sister- catching her eye was even worse. Eventually, though, Mai leaned over, brushing her knuckles against his cheek, and kissed his temple. "Alright. I'll stop by before work tomorrow for as long as I can."
She didn't leave until he gave his belated nod. The click of the door sounded ominous, and I couldn't miss how drastically Brazil deflated when it happened. I'd drained half of my coffee already, and I'd meant to save it, but I couldn't make myself lower it. I hadn't eaten as much as I should've that day, and it was acting as much a comfort as it was fuel. Plus, as long as there was some in my mouth, it kept me from being obligated to say anything. Bonuses all around, really.
Braz's legs curled up under the sheets, and I was more than aware of how deep his grimace was. The hand that wasn't IV-laden poked out from under his pillow, fingers curled over the edge of the bed, thumb rolling over his knuckles. I barely caught it, but I swear, he looked at me, and then at his hand, and that little thing- a hallucination for all I knew- was enough for me to at least cover his hand with mine.
I gave him a questioning look that he met with a half-smile. I wrapped my fingers when he wrapped his, eyes misting over when his closed, throat constricting when his body relaxed. I'd been here before. Under different circumstances, but I'd been here before, and it wasn't a place that I liked going back to.
"Nicky and Michael will be here soon," he said, voice more a mumble than anything else.
I whispered an, "Okay," but I think he was asleep before he had a chance to hear it. I rubbed my thumb over his knuckles and swallowed hard, blinking back a secondary wall of tears. I'd be there when he was discharged. Two days in, a breath of forgiveness later, and I'd made up my mind. This wasn't going to be the call-apologize-visit-part ways scenario that I'd had in my head. This was going to be the call-apologize-visit-stay scenario that I'd been dreading.
I sniffed, eyes wandering around the room, landing on different get well soon cards. A stuffed llama on the dresser in the corner, a bouquet of flowers that were just giving up next to it. Little things. Evidence that he'd been cared for in my absence, at least. He had support. Which was good- it was really, really good- but... he didn't need me. I was here, belatedly and out of place and, supposedly, welcome. But I'd be damned if my presence was on his list of "Ones Required."
And then there was his hand. The one that I hoped he'd asked me to hold. I focused on that instead, because it meant that I was, at the very least, wanted. It was warm, too. I couldn't remember Brazil ever having warm skin- he could have pried his fingers from the sides of a mug of boiling water, and his fingers would have been icy to the touch. This was new. I liked it.
Somewhere along the lines, I realized that I could hear him breathing, and that it sounded more relaxed than pained, and that it was soothing. And, somewhere along the same lines, my entire body drooped- not all at once, but all the way, eventually- head lolling over the back of the chair, and my eyes closed. I could feel his pulse in his fingers, and God alone knew that had always soothed me. I'd only been seven when I found that out. We were at a park, and I'd been lugging around a robin's egg that I was convinced I'd doomed to abandonment by touching it, and it didn't matter how many times I was told that it was already dead, I wouldn't believe it. I was going to hatch that baby bird. But I'd met him, and he'd looked at the ice cream pale I was keeping it in with all of the old doll blankets and the grass, and, somehow, he'd convinced me that it was gone. It wasn't my fault at all, but it was gone, and we needed to have a funeral for it.
I think I'd cried my little, seven-year-old heart into pieces by the time he actually took my hand, but he had, and that's when I remembered calming down. And, more distinctly than that, I remembered giggling after because I could feel his heartbeat in his fingertips, and something about that had apparently been amusing.
I was still back there when the door opened, barely lucid and far too entertained by the names I was throwing at us. Parker, Murderer of Baby Birds, and Brazil, the five year old with too much knowledge of mortality and that-
"I thought you were joking."
dumbass grin.
"Yeah, because it's so humorous." The door closed, and a hand patted my cheek. Repeatedly. I was almost scared to open my eyes. "I'd let you sleep, but I'm pretty sure Nicky'd shred you if she catches you with your eyes closed."
There was a snort- a terrifying snort- and my eyes actually did, after putting up a fight, flutter open to the white ceiling and the white walls and the white floor. And the body that broke it up, with a brown bob and brown eyes that flashed rage and destruction. Even the purple hoodie felt threatening. "I might shred him, anyway."
"Please don't," I squeaked, and his hand was still in my hand, and Nicky was staring right at it, arms crossed, lips cinched. I didn't let go, though- I didn't want to wake him up, and honestly, if I didn't have something to hold onto, I probably would've crapped myself. I swallowed, eyes darting to Michael, instead. He just grinned at me. A little unnerving, but far better than my alternative.
"I won't let her," he said, stepping over to pat my shoulder. He looked at Braz, and his face fell a little. "How long's he been out like that?"
I shrugged one shoulder. "Dunno. Dunno how long I was out, so." I rubbed my forehead with my free hand and sighed. "He passed out pretty quick after his mom left, though. If that helps."
"It-"
"Was France here?" Nicky cut him off. "How was she?" Technically speaking, I knew that the girl was fully capable of love and genuine concern, but hearing her voice go that soft over someone that wasn't Brazil was... odd. Surprising, almost.
I licked my lips and braved looking at her again. It didn't last long- my eyes hit the floor so fast. Something about the way hers were misting over, I guess. "She was... alright, I think. Didn't look like she wanted to leave, if that says anything." Michael had said that it was hard for her to be here. Wanting to stay was improvement, then, wasn't it?
"Yeah. It says something." Nicky sighed, making her way over to the other side of the bed to occupy one of the chairs. Michael followed suite, his hand landing on her shoulder. She didn't even shrug it off- just framed her face with her hands and propped her elbows on her knees. I swear, the wall of mist in her eyes just kept getting thicker.
Michael caught my gaze, offered a small, apologetic smile, and looked down again. More silence. Just like yesterday. It didn't stop until Braz stirred, at which point the sheets rustled around a little bit, but he stilled again, and I leaned forward so that he could keep his grip on my hand. A few more seconds, and Nicky sniffed, and I watched Michael's hand squeeze her shoulder, and it shook. I blinked, and they were up and hugging each other; Michael still had a leg on his chair, and Nicky's face was buried into his far shoulder.
I didn't look down until she started crying. Audibly. And something told me that this wasn't what she did every time she popped by. Not after a month of visits. Not after years of not knowing when he'd land himself in bleach-and-Popsicle-sticks land next. She hissed something that I didn't catch into Michael's shoulder, and he squeezed a little tighter. "It's fine, okay?" He was murmuring, and something about it just felt wrong. "He's fine. Braz was fine."
I was ninety-five percent sure that they were talking about me, and if they didn't stop immediately, I'd start crying, too. Nothing about this even seemed real, anymore. Surreality was setting in, and I couldn't, no matter how hard I tried, make myself believe that I was here. That this was happening. Had happened. I was exhausted- totally, completely done. Brazil was in the hospital. I'd officially given up all hope of accumulating Nicky's forgiveness. My eating plan was screwed. Brazil was in the hospital. So I blocked out the whispering as best I could, scrubbed at my forehead again, scooted my chair closer to the bed, and buried my face in the sheet near Braz's side. If I focused hard enough, it was just him breathing. Just the pulse in his fingers. Just the knowledge that he, at least, had forgiven me. No Nicky, no Michael. No hospital.
Nicky eventually calmed down, and I don't remember why or when, but she wound up having to leave the room for a few minutes. All I heard was the, "Yeah, I'll be back in a second," and then the footsteps and the door clicking. Michael brought his chair around next to mine, but I didn't really notice until he started rubbing my back.
"If it makes you feel any better, I'm not still that pissed at you." He chuckled. "I mean, I'm little bit pissed at you, but you're almost at an eighty percent forgiveness level."
I sniffed, but I didn't lift my face up. Didn't have the energy. "Eighty percent's not bad, I guess." Better than Nicky, from the looks of things.
"Nope. It's really not. Plus, his mom told me that she was really glad you showed up yesterday." I felt my eyebrows furrow. "Said that when she got back last night, Braz was, like, ninety percent happier."
"Percents are kind of your thing, huh?" My voice was crackling- a total betrayal of how much that actually meant to me. I'd made him happy. Showing up, in all of my guilty, cowardly glory, had made him happy.
Michael snorted, patted my back between my shoulder blades, and lifted his hand away. "Ever since I was fourteen, to be exact." He paused. "Seriously though, Parker. Everyone's really, really freakin' glad you showed up yesterday. Nicky included."
I actually lifted my face, not realizing that that little patch of sheet was soaked until the air hit the moisture on my cheeks. "She obviously doesn't know that, yet."
"She's Nicky. Give her five years. She'll get over it." He reached over me, standing a little as he did so, and when he sat back down, he had a tissue in his hands. I took it with gratitude and dabbed at my eyes.
"You're not just pulling my leg, right?" I blew my nose, just for good measure. "He was- happy, right? Like, I didn't- I didn't upset him?" I was already fairly certain that I'd never forgive myself, but I was completely certain that I'd never forgive myself if I'd swung by and dragged him back to some dark, shadowy place in the back of his mind. God knew he had plenty of those.
"Swear it." He leaned back. "I mean, granted, I wasn't actually there. This is just what his mom told me."
"You didn't upset me." The voice was slurred, weighed down by drugs and sleep, but it was there, and it had both Michael and I pausing.
Michael laughed under his breath and combed a hand over his hair. "How long've you been awake, dummy?"
It took a while for him to answer- too busy blinking off the grogginess, I guess, but he smiled when he did. "Probably only thirty seconds or so. Where's Nicky?"
Michael's gaze flickered to me, and mine flickered to the wall. "Had to step out for a second," I mumbled.
There was a breath of a pause, and then an, "Oh," and he had let go of my hand. I recoiled, a little, heart falling. He started shifting around, said shifts accompanied by winces. I think that both Michael and myself rose at the same time, but I was closer to his head, and he sat back down when he saw that I had it. Which was... nice. I was positive that Nicky would've shoved me out of the way. I shifted the pillows until he relaxed again, digging around the sheets for the little bed adjuster button thing, and handed it to him.
I sat back down, checking my watch. "Kind of forgot to mention this, but I've gotta head out early." I scratched the back of my neck with that hand, offering Braz a weak apologetic smile. "The aunt's dug herself up a new boyfriend, so. Promised I'd watch Koby so they could have a date night. He's picking her up at six." Hadn't I just told him that I'd be here until they kicked me out? God, I was a dumbass.
Braz nodded to the best of his abilities, opening his mouth to speak. He was cut off by the door opening and swinging back shut- I'm pretty sure we all watched his face light up. "Hey, sugarplum." The beast was back, and I only felt a little guilty for thinking it. "How're you feeling?"
"Crappy." He settled back again while Nicky breezed over, worked her way to the other side of the bed, and bent over to plant a kiss on his forehead. They'd always been affectionate with each other. I'd never really questioned it. They branched off into a conversation that I didn't understand, and Michael did, and he took part, and I... watched. I didn't mind, but it wreaked of all the things I'd missed, and I couldn't convince myself that I wasn't out of place. That I was supposed to be there.
They talked about that stupid thing Michael'd done over Skype video chat, and Nicky and Braz told him about a trip to an ice cream shop, and the little girl who'd just walked over and plopped herself down on Braz's lap. Michael told track stories. More Skype stories. Conference calls, because apparently, telephones hadn't died out in the nineties. Things that I'd had no part in. That I couldn't add to.
I excused myself at five thirty, accepted a hand-squeeze from Brazil, and drifted out. Surreal. It was still all surreal.

Isha!
I got through to chapter one for now -- I'll get by chapter two some time later.
1.1
My first impressions? It's so clean <3 At least compared to the other chapters, chapter one is the cleanest, but overall it's been pretty polished, like I can eat off this and I've read right through it without the slightest difficulty.
But the writing is delicious. As a reader, I'm hooked. As a writer, I got to appreciate those little things. I like how you begin with the phone-hovering. It's one of those keen observations that you totally miss until a writer points it out to you. I *do* that all the time, and the layers of meaning of the thing is like I'm biting into a delicious, hearty peanut butter sandwich -- speaking of. It's all in those details, and you've chosen the most endearing little things.
AS to my first impressions of Parker. This:
I am going to be quoting this. Literally. xD It's funny, it's intriguing! I actually can't wait to start this little journey along with Parker. I can be really fleeting in friendships myself
Brazil is an odd name, at first I was thinking his name was Basil. I'm sure I'll get used to it.
What I like about this too, is how you've introduced Parker's thoughts before we get the mother's explanations. So Parker is expecting suicide and the mother says it's an accident -- all of a sudden, I've got Parker's thoughts intruding on my judgement, and I'm wondering
how much of an "accident" it was. Hmm. Intriguing.
peanut butter sandwiches, green tea lattes, it's all in the details. <3 Love.
1.2
This bit gave me some confusion. Mostly it's because your sentences are well crafted, one thought sort of slinks into the next without any sort of friction. This thought however kind of comes from no where like a slap in the face. You know? The accident is serious and you were talking about the accident and that's where my curiosity and attention is at right now.
Then you mention the latte, and I'm like whut? The short style is nice and unique and refreshing, but I might suggest to lead up to it just in this particular case, like for example saying "The nurse lead me into the room, said the frappe was fine..." or something of that manner.
Also, how does Parker know so much about Braz' parents? It's odd. He calls her Mai. Not Mrs, etc. And he seems so close to them, like knowing up to the exact generation o.0 Like. Even *I* have to think to myself what generation I am. It just seemed odd to shoot off those
facts. I think for the most part, it's fine that Parker knows...but I dunno, you can put an "I think" in there, or revise it a bit as far as how much we know about Parker and Braz' relationship. At first, we're thinking they were once friends and got sort of distant..but
I'm thinking they are *much* closer than *just* friends. I don't even know my own friends' parents names like that.
It's weird someone would say "listen to exclamation point" to me that sounds like a writer-joke. Is Parker a writer? I think that if you're in that exact moment of listening to that screech, your thoughts are going to be focused on the /sound/ of it - "listen to that screeching" for example, rather than the grammatical syntax of the moment, y'know? o.o If this is a 'geeky' character quirk, it should be introduced from the get-go.
"and" her daughter...
I know you're going for that casual kind of short sentences. FOr the most part, you do a good job of it. In the above case, you're sacrificing clarity though, so I'd still add those conjunctions. I mean, people barely notice them anyway, so it won't kill your style either.
Ffff, yeah xD *eyeroll* And I BET you like the hand holding TOO Parker, I
know your game -- sorry D: I tend to talk back to the words on the page. This is a sign of excitement though, not like...ok I know, I'm weird.
D'aw. Look at him, he's being all formal and distant, yet polite with him. I can tell he was in a lot of hurt :c wat ya do to him Parker?!
The fire eyes of all brown terror is a little awkwardly phrased x-x;
brown eyes livid of fire maybe? I dunno. How can something be "brown terror" o.o Unless it's a dog. With teeth.
like all dogs don't have teethI knew it. Parker did something (broke up with/distance himself from? Had a fight?) and that's what led to Braz's "accident" ? Hmm.
Conceited jerk.
Grrrrr. I dunno if Parker is just clueless and really just so cold and closed off >:/ he seems selfish/self absorbed. He *is* a bit sympathetic though, I get that he didn't intend this kind of hurt, and I understand that he seems a bit closed off in himself, and that this is a self-defense thing. I get that. He needs to learn humility and to open up. Tell the guy how you feel, that you love him and that you're not only sorry, you messed up because you're a conceited little ---> Okay. I'll get back to reading and stop trying to judge your characters before I even hear the whole story x) In addition to talking back to them, I also give them advice, I can't stop myself.
**sighs** I just sense trouble looming. That is just so utterly human. The moment we fuss up bigtime, we console ourselves with like --well I'll just make everything better in the future. And that can be a good thing, y'know? It's not good to dwell on the past, so what Parker is doing
is sort of healthy, particularly if he feels incredible guilt. And you can do a lot of good with that mindset, but it's not the kind of "closure" mindset that keeps you from making those same mistakes over again. :/
I can't be too sure I"m interpreting this right, this early in the
story but Parker seems so buried with issues. He needs to face his skeletons, fast.
c: This should be fun.
1.3
^ Oh lawd, Parker makes me nervous. Guys do this don't they? I can't stand it when they bring me books they think I'll like or flowers or candy because they want to "make it up to me" GAH!
When I am sorry about something and I want to be forgiven, I try not to think about "wanting to be forgiven" :/ that's not something *you* can do, that's kind of like saying "Please feel better about this because I feel bad that you feel bad" and it's not really absolving yourself of guilt, is it? You're only putting more burden on the other person, because now they have to worry about your feelings too?!!!
FFFFFF. GAWD, Parker is *SO* self-absorbed and closed up. Now I wanna know why Braz likes him so much. I want to know what it is about their relationship that works --- I mean, I get why they have problems XD
I suppose if I think about it, it's not about "wanting to be forgiven"
it's about 1) understanding and accepting responsibility for the wrongs that you've caused --
this means allowing the person the freedom to be right on mad at you if they want to. And
2) Knowing that it's okay if that person is mad at you, you still have to forgiving yourself. If you're genuinely wanting to redeem yourself, you'll have to know yourself enough to *know* you *cant* do it again and you *wont* You have to know why you were wrong and learn from it and not take it too hard on yourself, everyone makes mistakes. And
3) open communication with the other person; having them know why you did what you did. A lot of the times, people have good intentions, even if their actions are suck-y and selfish. That is what the other person needs to be consoled in, they need to know what your *INTENTIONS* were. Go ahead and tell them that you were wrong for doing what you did, what you intended in doing what you did, and that you love them and you want to be better. c: I know. I know.
People are people are people and complications. I'll stop picking at your flawed characters <_<
>:/ Parker is going on dangerous territory now. "A little hostility
was warranted" - ya think? GOSH JERK!
Stupid jerkface BETTER recognize.Gossssh his attitude ;-;
That's all Parker cares about is how he *feels* :/ Things like this really make me question Parker's intention for being there. GUilt probably and probably obligation at this point, less about Braz and he'e just so utterly selfabsorbed ;-; He needs to learn to put himself in other people's shoes, the world doesn't revolve around Parker!
Ugghhh yeah. My thoughts feel confirmed.
NO DUH HE"S HIS OWN INDEPENDENT PERSON! UGH WHAT A JERK!!!!!!!! D:<
When I think of a voice crackling, I think of feeling/emotion. When you say "total betrayal of how that actually meant to me" -- It suggeststhat he was actually cold/sarcastic when he delivered the line, so which is it?
So in this part, I think overall, it could improve with more descriptions for characters would really help a lot! Nicky is pretty memorable (those brown terror eyes o.o) but Frances? Michael? I mean, Michael gets a *little* fleshed with the percentage line, but until then, not really anything.
WHile I know I was harping on Parker a lot -- at the end, we do see a bit of softness. c: Nice moments. Poor Braz. He's dealing with a tricky one...
Writing wise, I think the main problem here is that these characters are revolving around Braz right now. They are all just kind of standing there and paying attention to his every movement. Humans aren't that..devoting. When I was in the hospital, I'd draw pictures or watch TV or read or walk around and get to know the area. So these are good ways to also develop your characters further (show them as their own agents each with their own worries and interests
and such *OTHER* than just what's happening to Braz, because it's evident that they care about him and worry about him, but their whole lives do not revolve around him.
This will also help us distinguish between who is who. Like I know Nicky as the angry one, and I know Michael as the quiet percentage guy c: But give us something... Hm. Conflicting/Dimensional/Interesting?
So with Nicky, you did pretty good because she is described as angry, but she is also intensely loyal loving and sweet/soft to Braz. So that conflict of tough cookie but also soft is a good dimensional dynamic.
In contrast, Michael seems quiet and that's all he is, :/ I get the feeling that we'll get to know more about Braz in subsequent chapters, so I'll hold off on my impressions of him for the moment.
C: Good read, thanks for that! I know this isn't really my standard review -- I feel like with poetry I have the ability to go real technical and I don't have much practice reviewing prose. But I figured what the heck. An "impressions" review is fun to write, so!
And you, keep writing all this good stuff. c: I want to be able to buy stories from you.
~ as always, Audy
Oh good lord this was beautiful xD
Notes on Parker: Parker is currently dealing with a lot of LOVELY STUFF in his own personal life (which you see more of in chapter 3), but yeah, he can be a bit conceited sometimes. I think his tendency to worry about his own feelings is a coping mechanism =/ If he thinks too hard about what Braz is feeling, he sorta loses his mind.
Notes on other characters - Michael's expanded on in chapter two. I'm saving Nicky-expansion for later because she's actually THERE for almost the whole novel xD I'm not entirely sure that I could show them as anything but devoted to Braz, atm? He can't leave the hospital, and Michael and Nicky aren't important enough that I can switch to their POVs. o.o
Also, Parker and Brazzy-pie were VRYinvolved (and Braz's family was Parker's happy place during his early teens), so they know each other very well xD
You learn these things eventually! 8D
Srslytho Parker was sitting in my head scowling at you this whole review. He promises that he's not /always/ conceited. Only when he's supestired.
Haha, xD D'aw, scowlface. Though to be honest, I wouldn't have it any other way. I definitely did get the impression that there's a coping mechanism/survival instinct thing as far as emotions and such, and as much trash talk as I was yapping about - he's my favorite character so far - he's portrayed realistically, and I don't remember any characters I've ever read about who's made me contemplate the nature of forgiveness, so it may not have come across in my review, but I meant it all as a good thing, anyway (I think it's because I wrote my comments as I was reading, rather than reading and commenting afterwards.)
I'm hoping sometime this weekend I can have "sit down time" to enjoy the rest! So I type this reply just as a follow up, let ya know I haven't forgotten c:
I've actually been told by multiple people that Parker is one of the most realistically human characters they've ever read /)_o I'm actually ridiculously glad that you chewed him out XD It reassured me that I'M DOING A GOOD JOB WITH CHARACTERIZATION.
Take your time <333
I'll just knock chapter one out of the park tonight...
Hey!
Here to bother you once again...
Oops... I see Iggy also talked about the imagery... Oh well.
Another emotional section.
"Wreaked" is used when one wreaks havoc.
I understand what you're trying to say, but I'm not sure what the details are at all.
Why this repetition? You said it once. We don't need the word repeated.
So, when Francis and Mai are introduced and really far into the chapter, I have no idea who is who. I understand that one is a sister and one is a mother but I'm not sure which name belongs to which roll.
Also, let's spend a minute to talk about character development. Now, it's only chapter one, but all of your characters come off flat. The memory of Brazil is kinda vibrant, but the character we have now is rather foggy. I'm a little worried that I'm spotting a ton of stereotypical characters.
Parker the guilt ridden main character just trying to prove himself.
Brazil the selfless, quick to forgive childhood friend
Nicky the quick to anger protector with her emotions on the surface
Michael the peacemaker that makes the occasional joke.
Now, it is the first chapter, so these characters aren't dead in the water. You have a chance to fill them out, give them your own twist, but you want to do so quickly. Characters are the lifeblood of a book, especially a book of this genre where the plot is heavy on character development (or so it seems). You have to make the reader love or hate them quickly. As familiar as I'm sure you are with the characters, keep in mind again, that we're meeting them for the first time.
This section was really cute though. I loved the little bit about the robin egg. My heart breaks for poor Parker. I feel like things are only going to get tougher for him.
I'll get the next section tomorrow.
Megs~
On character development:I swear the characters grow xD They've been in my head for YEARS now, and I've pretty much just started a version of the novel that I'm okay with, so I kinda forget to actually add the detail and development, because I know who they are and what they're like, and I tend to forget that other people don't? I did go with typical types at first (which I did for reasons that I won't explain here), but they do develop.

I've done some tweaking to the first chapter, just little phrases and stuff, that I hope clears up a little more of the who's who. I haven't posted the edits yet, because I'm not done with them, but.
Thank you again.
Sidenote: Nicky is actually the most difficult character to build. xD She has a personality, but you don't see a whole lot of it unless she's with Braz's family, her family, or in a scene for a really long time. Which isn't an option in this chapter /)_e If I am not successful in building her up in the next two chapters, please scream at me and I'll rework things accordingly xD
Hi again!
This is such a good story! The character development is great. The MC and Braz are already very interesting and likable. The pacing was perfect, not too fast like some of the stories on here. And pacing can be tricky, so major props to you for nailing it.
The relationship between the characters is also very strong and realistic. All of it seems scarily honest and true to life at times, which is awesome. Really, just great job.
Nitpicks:
Careful not to go too overboard with the dramatic dashes. You really don't need it here.
The comma's unnecessary.
Again, you can get rid of that comma.
Other than that, well done! Really, really well done.
Hey there Isha!
If you do want to keep the mystery going for as long as possible, you could drop hints or something along the ways to feed the reader little bits before they get the full picture.
Let me know on my wall or something when the next chapter is up because I'd happily read it.
I read all the previous parts of the chapter just to make sure I knew what was going on. It's pretty interesting so far, and you've definitely got me hooked. I didn't even know Parker was male until I read Iggy's review in the second part, and if I hadn't then I still wouldn't! I understand how he's a male with feminine characteristics, but I feel like you need to make it more obvious. One easy way of adding it in would be to have Nicky and Michael talking about Parker and say "that boy," or something like that, referring to him as male so all the readers get it.
You've tied in a great element of mystery in here. What happened before that made Parker need forgiveness? Why did she drag out the apology for three years? All very hooking, but make sure you don't drag it out for too long or it can get annoying. I am aware this is only the first chapter though
You've done a great job of building up characters. I already feel like I can understand Braz and Parker pretty well, and from what we've heard of Nicky we know quite a bit about her. The only character I'm still trying to fully figure out would be Michael. And what's up with Frances? Hmm, more interesting things to learn about in the future.
Other then the key point of gender issues, there isn't much criticism from me. You've got a very good style, and you write exceptionally well. If this was a published book I'd buy it for sure
Deanie x
Deanie!
Thank you so much, m'dear.
One thing that I would like to say, because I'm getting "I thought he was a girl" a LOT. And this is that there are two people that have read this story who knew beforehand that Parker likes dudes (spoiler alert but not really? I think it's pretty dang obvious at this point so xD).
Both of them said, "... he doesn't sound like a girl at all."
Thus, I have concluded that it's a "first person; narrator angsting about boy??? OHHH! MC = GIRL" thing. So this is the only actual crit that I will ignore from here on in. xD
Otherwise, thank you veryvery much! I'll try to elaborate on Michael more in the next chapter, because I have more opportunities to. Same with Francis.
Hey doll!
I think you mean pail, here.
First off, don't panic about the length. It wasn't frighteningly long (I woulda ran away if it was). I think it was at the perfect length for all of that.
Disappointment, though. We still don't know why Brazil is in the hospital! Nor do we really know the relationship, or prerelationship, between Brazil and Parker. You do hint towards a love relationship(?), by the affectionate hand-holding. As we all know, two straight guys won't hold hands unless dared, and maybe not even then. Plus, in my opinion, Parker has some girlish/flamboyant/nonmasculine qualities.
Anyways, I'm anxious to know why he was hurt, and why Parker left him. It must've been really bad, due to Nicky and Michael's reactions. Don't keep us in the dark for too long!
I think you're doing a great job with giving the story a slow and steady pace, even if it is making me hungry for more. I like how you've developed the characters and how you show their relationships and the love they have for Brazil.
A suggestion I'll throw at you is more imagery. I know it's hard to do so in the hospital, but try! Like we all know hospitals smell like clean and peroxide and ickyness, so you could focus on that, or open up a window so poor Brazil can get some sunlight. Something to give the scene a bit more than a bed, a chair, and a patient. All I picture is white.
Overall, it was a pleasure to read and I look forward to chapter two!
-Iggy
Thanks again!
The only problem I'm having with imagery is... it's a hospital. I have no idea what to throw in, since most North American hospitals (especially the rooms) are pretty much identical.
I can definitely try more with the people, if you think that'd help? Or, if you have any hospital imagery tips, hit me up
Thanks again. I appreciate it muchly.
