One Last Time

PreviousNext

I grip the arms of my chair. The sweat on my upper brow has worked its way down past my shivering nose and my quivering mouth. All the way to the cuffs of my salmon pink shirt. We vibrate and shudder, the stranger on the tannoy reassures us that this is normal. That the shakes of metal giving up and cracking is normal. I know there's something wrong.

The person sat next to me is reading a book calmly, casually turning the pages as if we weren't all going to die in a matter of minutes. 'Learn to be Happy' the title read, written by some phony. Writing each page laughing to himself as he counts the dollar signs. She was a petit Japanese woman, quiet and curious. She kept herself to herself, only pausing my moments of terror to ask for a pen. She bowed her head as I passed the Bic across to her, our palms polar opposites, hers smooth and dry, mine were dipped in a sweaty oil that was too persistent to rub on my jeans.

Jeans were a bad choice, dress for comfort they said, I naively ignored that advice as I put them on. They were tight around my waist and thigh, it oddly made me feel more secure. I poked my head out to the side, to peer down the aisle, another jolt made me lose my seat for a brief second. I rubbed my forehead and scratched my beard, the salmon pink getting darker and darker as time went on. Rows upon rows of arms and shoulders glazed my vision, two seats in front of me there was a shoulder wearing a black leather jacket with fake metal spikes at the top. The next one ahead was a dark blazer and the rest were generic business shirts, red, white and blue.

We were all lambs to the slaughter, lined up row after row to the chopping block. I had to get out. I unbuckled my seatbelt and as calmly as possible made my way to the back. My hands were still shaking. I put them in my pockets, hiding my fear. Everyone was staring at me, were they asking for help? They were stuck here as well as me. Some looked angry others looked annoyed, I didn't fully understand as my eyes darted between all their faces. I just ignored them. I kept my head down and carried on to the back. I was almost there, the exits were clearly marked, taunting us all, showing us how close we were to freedom and how far.

"Excuse me sir!" A voice echoed behind me, I ignored it, no amount of pleasantries will get me back in that chair. "Excuse me sir, you should sit back down in your seat." A woman appeared from in front of me, her bright red lipstick complimented her cravate. These were all ploys, a nice facade to keep us all in check. Another woman came in behind me, they had closed me in, I was defenceless against them, trapped like a rat in a cage in a falling elevator. I had no where to go, she grabbed my arm, not as harsh as I expected, firm but assertive. I was powerless, my hands were still trembling, my clothes were soaked through and tight to my body. Courage had decided to take the day off, the shift being taken by obedience. My feet reluctantly dragged me back to my seat, the adventure of escape being cut short.

I place my hands back in their position, firmly clasped to the arms of my chair. I reach into the bag under my seat and take out my phone. It's an old brick, nothing but calling and texting, didn't see the point of everything else. The man sat next to me on the other side of the aisle leaned in, I caught eyes with him, he looked deep into my eyes for only a moment. He pulled away and whispered something into his partners ear. She then peered over at my seat, a look of suspicion on her brow. It made me feel uneasy.

I scrolled through my contacts. Mum, Dad, Ahmed...Laura. The reason I'm on this trip in the first place. Mum and Dad always had a problem with her, but I was adamant in my endeavour to win her over. She knew all about me the second we met, she was perfect and she always knew how to calm me down and make me feel safe. Getting the best of my nerves becoming a two person job. She thought it was cute. I just wanted to hear her voice, I want hers to be the last voice I hear, ever. I check down the aisle again, this time making sure they weren't lurking round the corners again. I caressed the phone, I wasn't allowed to use it, I mean hell it might not even work at all. The guy and his wife next to me were getting even more agitated. The fake metal spikes and the red, white and blue turned around, their focus drawn to my seat and the anxious mess sitting in it. My heart was racing, bump...bump...bump...my seat was juttering about, trying to shake me out of it. If I just heard her voice then all of this would just float away, one word. I started dialing her number, she was staying at her mothers, the number being catalogued in my head. The man next to me stood up and waved over the attendant, red lipstick and cravate included. He's betrayed me, he's betrayed all of us.

"Excuse me sir, you can't use that whilst we're in the air." She said, making her way down the aisle, her voice bringing the attention of everyone on board.

"I just have to make a call." I said, I stood up and stepped back, slowly creeping to the back as the eyes followed me. Why were they all against me? We were in this together and now they were crumbling under the pressure, or maybe I was? "I just have to make a call." I said again. I pressed the little green phone symbol and place the phone to my ear. Half the cabin gasped, why? I was only making a call, I had to grip the handset tightly, the liquid fear was trying to to make me drop it, betraying me like all the others. A man appeared from the back of the cabin, he pulled back the curtain, coffee in hand. One of the attendants was talking to him, he clocked me quickly and rushed forwards, he wafted back his jacket and pulled out a gold badge, thrusting it forwards. The coffee being left behind to get cold.

"Put the phone down, sir."

"Just one quick call."

"Air marshall! Put the phone on the ground!" He yelled, the pleasant prior tone being completely dismissed, he pulled out a small revolver, concealable in design. I put my hands up but the phone was still firmly in my possession. The dialing tone ringed through my ears.

"Don't let him do it!"

"I knew there was something wrong with that guy."

"Get him."

"Why is this happening?" The passengers yelled, a sea of hate and confusion. The people sat near me reeled away, leaning as far away from me as possible. I'm shaking all over now, not helping the situation. What was going on? I just want to phone Laura, why are they being like this? I started getting emotional, my eyes clouding over with a slither of water, my lips quivering. I need her now.

"Put that phone down and get on the ground or I will be forced to put you down." He said. The dial tone stopped. It either went dead or she was there on the other side. It was a normal day ten minutes ago but now someone was pointing a gun at me, everyone was egging him on, all of them relinquishing their morals out of fear, a fear I didn't understand. I need to hear her voice. I put the phone to my ear. He focused his arm and aimed at my head. His finger lightly grazing the trigger.

"Hello." she said. One last time. I closed my eyes and I floated away.

Hi LMJ,

Another chilling story. You write a lot of dark ideas down. I liked it, but I must say this one was more confusing. I didn't really understand that he was on a plane until later on, and I think you need to make this a lot more clear.

I also noticed run on sentences again. Down below I have a few and my corrections on them. But there are still some more in there because I was lazy and didn't fish them all out :P So I left them for you to do :)

"Jeans were a bad choice, dress for comfort they said, I naively ignored that advice as I put them on." Jeans were a bad choice. Dress for comfort, they said. I naively ignored... etc

"Some looked angry others looked annoyed, I didn't fully understand as my eyes darted between all their faces." Some looked angry, others looked annoyed. I didn't fully... etc

"A voice echoed behind me, I ignored it, no amount of pleasantries will get me back in that chair" A voice echoed behind me. I ignored it, no amount of... etc

"These were all ploys, a nice facade to keep us all in check. Another woman came in behind me, they had closed me in, I was defenceless against them, trapped like a rat in a cage in a falling elevator. I had no where to go, she grabbed my arm, not as harsh as I expected, firm but assertive" These were all ploys, a nice façade to keep us all in check. Another woman came behind me. They had me closed in. I was defenceless against them, trappled like a rat in a cage, in a falling elevator. I had no where to go. She grabbed my arm, ... etc.

Just remember that each time you need a break and the sentence is getting too long, it's highly likely you need a full stop. As well as this, always remember that a new line of thought or action can be a separate line. Like I had no where to go, she grabbed my arm. You can kind of tell they should be separated.

I'll stop going on about sentences now though. I think you did a good job with description. I could empathise with how panicky he was feeling. One thing though, although there isn't actually anything wrong with the plane except turbulence (from what I gather) at first I thought there literally was something wrong because you mentioned the sound of metal bending. If there isn't supposed to be anything wrong than maybe you need to phrase this differently so the reader understands it's a sound which can be interpreted that way, but actually shouldn't be.

Hmm, I don't really like the title to this short story. I think there could be something better and more suited than one last time, although it is okay. Personal opinion here though. Hope all these reviews on your short stories helps!

Deanie x

The reason I mention the sounds of metal bending and stuff like that is because he is overreacting, he's hearing slight noises and interpreting them as something sinister. And I deliberately didn't tell you he was on a plane because I sort of like keeping the reader in the dark for as long as I can, if you knew he was on a plane straight away I feel that you may not have been as 'anxious' and 'scared' as I would have liked.

Cheers for the review,

LMJ

Hey! I'm gonna try my best not to disappoint you with this little review. First of all, it all started with a big blurry picture shrouded by all sorts of intense emotions. I didn't understand the guy was inside a plane until the middle of the story. I kept thinking maybe it's a prison or maybe a courtroom. Then you described the ladies with res lipstick so it made me doubt myself again. That having said, the description and your use of words was marvelous. Even though I had absolutely no idea what was going on or why everyone was being so serious about it, I could so easily connect with the main character.

The way you showed his agitation and along with that you also described the thoughts of the people surrounding him. They weren't on good terms with him, that was for sure but to think they looked at him with such skeptical eyes, it was all too too strange. It seriously created the kind of atmosphere where the reader is just waiting restlessly while reading, thinking why doesn't he just push his way through or make a run for it. It made me so anxious just thinking about it.

However the fact that the man just took out a gun intending to shoot him was so strange. Perhaps you had to describe a little bit of the past or just give us an insight to the current situation. Was this guy accuses of something? Did he do something bad? How was he aware of the fact that he was about to die? And how come he was trying to get off the seat while being in the air. Those were all the confusing bits but putting it aside, I really liked the ending. It was sad yet peaceful but also painful . I think you're a pretty good writer. You just need to add a few more bits of information unless they were meant to be like that. But that's fine. Keep it up! =]

LMJ,

Just...wow. This was really well written. The character, the descriptions, the fear was perfectly written. I was held in suspense the entire time, my heart even sped up a bit. Even though it was short, it held my attention the whole time. Only two typos caught my eye (nice job!)

"Excuse me sir, you should sit back down in you seat."

You should be your.
"Hello." She said.

And she shouldn't be capitalized.

Other than this, that was amazing work. I was left with a lot of questions, which may have been your point. Why was a gun drawn? Did he have paranoia or another problem? Why did her voice calm him so? Where was he traveling to? And lots more...great job. Hope this review helped!

Keep writing and being amazing!

~GC

Cheers, nice reviews are always helpful :) Glad you enjoyed it, I seem to have a scan read editing affliction that annoys me more than the reader. I will clean it up right now!

Thanks,

LMJ

Wow. This has left me a little speechless I must admit. I did love this story so I am here to leave a review! :)

Firstly, lets attack the grammar.

" 'Learn to be happy' the title read, written by some phony, writing each page laughing to himself as he counts the dollar signs."

This is a great sentence but it took me a few times of reading it to understand. Maybe I am just being picky but it doesn't seem to flow right. I think it would work better if you split the sentence up a bit.

Like this, " 'Learn to be Happy' the tittle read, written by some phoney. Writing each page while laughing to himself as he counts the dollar signs."

Personally, I think this flows a lot nicer however that is my opinion so it is up to you to change it or not. I am no expert on grammar so feel free to ignore me! :) Other than that nothing jumped out at me as being wrong and I didn't notice any spelling mistakes.

Next the story! Like I said I thought it was great. It is very interesting and I was hooked from the beginning. It has a nice pace as well; not too fast or too slow. You linger only on certain things to describe which I think works really well to put us into the characters mindset. Also your character was intriguing to read! There is a great build up of tension in him as he gets more and more nervous and, as readers, we get more tense with him. My own heart was even speeding up a little at the end of that.

The story is also left open to let the reader use their own imagination. We question why he is so scared of being on a plane that he would be driven to trying to jump out of the door (I presume thats what he was planning to do?). Then when he is trying to call Sam we emphasise with him and hope that they'll let him make that call. However, it starts to become a little suspicious and along with the passengers we start to become worried with his actions. When the air marshall intervenes we are caught between wanting to trust the MC and dreading whats actually going to happen when the dial tone stops.

By the last line you have successfully taken us on a thrilling journey. At one point I honestly thought he was going to blow them all up. The way in which you have written this gives us a disjointed view of what is actually happening and I don't think we can be 100% sure who is right and who is wrong. The last part, "I floated away.", pulled on my heartstrings and I am angry at the other characters for being overly suspicious.

Again, this is an amazing short story and I am going to reread it one more time after posting this. Keep up the great work! ~ Valkyrie

Thanks very much for the review, I'm glad you found it an interesting read. Funny thing is I wrote this entire thing on a plane.

Cheers,

LMJ

That makes this even more awesome! :D
