A student of Latin should also gain a firmer grasp on English vocabulary by recognizing that almost all the big words come from Latin. I've never had the chance to learn Latin myself, but this is one con I've heard from people where I live: Latin, for the most part, is only helpful in learning European languages, as languages in other parts of the world have very different structures. (For example, you wouldn't be able to branch from Latin to Japanese.) This could limit its worth as "preparation for learning any language".
