In terms of magic and determining how strong a witch is: Imagine a well, strong witches have a deep well, from which they can pull a lot of water, weak witches have a shallow well. If you drain the well, depending on how far you drain it, your witch can either pass out or die, this is called burning out. A death from a burnout is extremely dangerous to those in the vicinity as well.
Book magic makes a little magic go further. In terms of what it is, you learn a spell from a spell book, and can use that. More complicated spells require more control, magic, and often require a symbols or a pentagram. Otherwise, it's more or less up to your imagination!
