I kept one when I was younger, nowadays I have a "dream diary" where I write my dreams down, to use them in stories.

Okay… I’m trying to write a story based on a diary… it sounds generic but I promise that it isn’t… so… um… how does it work?

If you create something special it isn´t generic.

What is writing in a diary like? Are people descriptive? Do people really share their deepest darkest feelings and is it just a jumble of thoughts or is it coherent? Should each day have a long entry - what is long?

(My confusion as to what a normal diary looks like should maybe be put in Research instead… my attempt at a diary was not very pretty.)

Just write what comes to mind, for me something like this is more like a bullet point list of what I accomplished during the day to see a little of the positives in life.

Can it be long? I mean if you had a really long day and a lot happened? Because there’s a major moment where the girl learns all about her Mom and there’s like a thousand words:

Yeah! I have 0 experience in this field, but in an actual diary, you don't have a word limit right? You just write whatever and how much ever happened on the day.

Reads book in diary style. First three entries are 16 pages… me having been worried by three entries that are 16 pages!

Because nobody writers 10 pages in there diary every day.

I don´t know. Somewhere in the world, someone is writing the longest text for the day. There could be 10 pages and a diary.

Hehehe… might just have to keep it a little shorter than that but it isn’t looking too bad…

Write as much as you can before planning to write less.
