"Well, even without service, he can still take pictures and videos of stuff, which could be useful," Bo answered matter-of-factly. "He'd also have a flashlight and a compass if he's got those apps. Apart from that, I don't think there's any wifi... not that Google would be likely to provide a lot of useful information about alien planets."
"Okay," Aegeas said, not sure what half of those words meant. "So why is he, of all people, the one who gets to use it?"

"And talks about how nice numbers are," Aegeas said, scowling.

“Oh, you mean 69? All Raiden meant was that his phone has a certain amount of power before it runs out and doesn’t work any more. That power is measured by numbers out of 100. So he has 69% power left, which is a little over half. And also, he’s not the only one with a phone,” he said, reaching in his pocket and pulling out his own. “I have one too. It’s off so that I can save the power for when I really need it.”
"Oh," Aegeas said, turning to Bo. His voice mellowed ever so slightly, "That makes more sense. Thanks."

"We have ours, too," Nadira said. She pulled hers out of her pocket. It was of a slightly different design than Raiden's, but it still made Maahes - who had been gaping at Raiden's phone for the past minute - stare.
"That's a phone?" he finally asked, dark eyes wide. Nadira gave a hesitant nod. Wasn't he from Earth, and supposedly savvy with technology? Her phone wasn't even all that special - it was just a regular Android phone, like Codix's. "Can I-Can I hold it?"
"...Sure?"
Maahes eagerly took it from her and began turning it this way and that as he stared at it. "I-I don't get it," Maahes said. "How can there be phones like this without me knowing about them? I thought I was keeping up on the technological advances that I missed while I was away from Earth!"
Nadira and Codix exchanged another look.
"Maahes," Codix asked, "what do phones look like for you?"
Maahes looked up from Nadira's phone.
"They're a little taller," he said, "and they have a keyboard underneath the screen. Why?"
"...I don't think we're from the same time, Maahes," Codix guessed. Nadira gave a nod in agreement. "These phones are everywhere right now, and Nadira told me that not everyone from similar Earths are coming from the same year - Bo and Raiden are both from 2018, and Nadira and I are from 2016."
Maahes went a little pale.
"...Oh," he said, his voice suddenly quiet. "I'm from 2006."
"And how much of a problem is that going to be?" Aegeas said, tensing up. This conversation only reminded him how out of sync he was with everyone else. He wasn't on anything remotely resembling an 'Earth.' He didn't know if he was hundreds or even thousands of years off from these people's realities (when he entertained the idea that there was other realities). It unsettled him, just like everything else did. And he didn't think today was going to get any better.

Maahes looked over at Aegeas, noting how tense the otter had become. He gave a sheepish smile and rubbed the back of his neck. "It's not really a problem," he admitted. "It's just that I didn't realize I was talking with people from the future."
Aegeas sighed and pinched the bridge of his stubby nose. "Can we please figure out how we're going to survive out here?" he said.

His guise's face turning red in embarrassment, Maahes hurriedly nodded. His gaze traveled back to the pile of weapons. If they were going to start searching this planet, they would have to take care of the weapons. They had to hide them to prevent them from being taken by other people - or things - but they also needed to make them easily accessible. He scanned the surrounding area for a clear landmark.
And then he found it.
He scooped up the weapons in his arms and walked over to the dial home device, stopping in front of the coordinate console and using a concentrated burst of wind to dig a hole in the blink of an eye. He discarded the weapons into the hole and turned back to the others.
"If you want to get something from the weapons," he said, "this is your last chance."
As Maahes started to speak, Bo was nodding but already walking over to the pile of weapons, unashamedly grabbing the largest gun with a strap and slinging it over his shoulder. "I feel like I'd rather explain to folks living here that we got stranded her by a god and took weapons as a precaution than get caught with fewer weapons and run into a giant monster who wants to eat us."
