Second nodded in agreement.
Minra was right, but it was the only reason that Second was wary of Carter's determination to kill James. He wasn't sure how he could explain it without revealing his own secrets - secrets he guessed he'd have to face later, but secrets that wouldn't really help now.
"I wasn't trusting him over you," Second said. He stood his ground. He doubted Carter was going to swing his sword at him - it just didn't make sense. He might push him out of the way, or try attacking James from another angle, but it was hard to tell. "I'm not from your world. What your king decided means nothing to me. And if we're all going to be stuck here together, I'm not going to blindly trust the words of a stranger."
He gestured at the woods around them.
"This was made by you, Carter," he said. "You can't brush us off like you did when you were rescuing Anne - we need to know what's going on, and we need to know it now. I'm not going to let you get any closer to James unless you tell me exactly what crime he committed and what he did to you."
