"Uh, okay..." I said, trailing off as I watched her walk-no, scratch that, run-down the hall.
Who was David?
For some reason, I felt like if he was her boyfriend, I'd...I don't know. But it wouldn't be pretty.
I walked down the hall to my next class: Chemistry. I stepped into the classroom, closing the door behind me. I looked to the teacher's desk. Mr. Hartman was there and...oh, crud. Honestly, were these teachers everywhere?
Ms. Greene stood at the front of the class, flipping through a textbook.
I sighed. I really, really didn't like her.
I walked near to the back of the class, flopping down into the only seat available: the one next to Dusty.
"Hey," I offered, and she smiled back.
I turned to look out the window, not really listening to Mr. Hartman droning on about the table of elements and such.
The sun seemed so bright today. Honestly, it seemed as if it was glowing inside me.
Maybe it was because I was happy I had a...friend. "I guess that's what she is, right?"
I realized with a jolt that I could look straight at the sun and it didn't hurt my eyes. I had been trying to do that for a while, but I had never succeeded.
It was entrancing, really, and I stared at the sun until I felt someone tap me on the shoulder.
"Could you help me?" I heard Dusty say as I whirled to face her, spinning on my chair.
As I turned, my hand flew out and knocked a beaker over. It didn't break, but the contents spilled onto the table.
"Oh, man, I'm sorry," I said, rushing to help clean it up. The liquid wasn't toxic-I wasn't sure what it was.
"It's ok." she said, using a paper towel to clean up.
Once we had gotten that done, she reached for a match to light the burner. But they had gotten all wet from the liquid.
"Shoot!" she said. "Oh well, let's try it anyway."
I looked at the dripping match in her hand doubtfully.
"I don't think-" I started to say, but she had already struck it.
It lit up quickly, blazing.
We both looked at each other through the flame.
"Wow." she breathed, and then put the match to the burner.
I couldn't stop watching that flame.
~~~~~~
Ok, I have NO idea how to work a bunsen burner, so lets just say this one needed to be lit by matches, for creative purposes.
And I hope this is ok, TN.
Ooh, and Risa: Drama? David? Mistaken for boyfriend? Possibly Hmmm....
lol.
Science was my second favorite class after Math. But at this moment I was so bored. The teacher was rambling on about stuff that I had known since grade school. Maybe I should quit summer school, I thought humorously. But I still kept an ear open for stuff that already wasn't packed into my brain. My mom and dad had wanted me to start collage soon, but I had convinced them to let me do a review for the "just in case". A little breeze floated in through the open window and ruffled my hair gently. With a sigh I got back to the experiment. Question, How can it be an experiment if you know what's going to happen?
“One and two and three and four and turn…” I chanted with the other colorguard members. I spun around, in time of course, and threw my flag in the air along with four other girls. They spun two complete circles before we caught them just as the last note echoed in the air. Of course, Reisma made us stand for about ten minutes before he let us shake it out. Standing still takes more energy than it does to walk for the same amount of time. Or so he said…and I believed him by now.
I saw some freshman look at their watches nervously; we still had five minutes until lunch-which meant three more minutes of marching. Suppressing a laugh, I stretched my arms. Stupid freshmen .
“Back to the beginning!” Reisma yelled and we scrambled to our places. A few freshmen groaned. “Fifteen push-ups, just for that!” We glared at the complainers as we set our interments on the wet grass.
We stood up after fifteen push-ups each and stood still. Our chins up were up and our chests out, stomachs in and all that fun stuff that makes us look like we actually know what we’re doing instead of little flags telling us where to go (band stuff).
“Go to lunch.”
……………………..
After Gregory’s description of the last piece, music appreciation had finally ended. If I wasn’t so glad to be out of there, I would have probably strangled Sam for getting me in there in the first place.
I was about to walk back to my classroom and relax before my next English class when a freshman boy came up to me.
“M-miss Greene?”
“Yes?” I asked trying to not sound annoyed. It was very difficult since all I wanted to do was go back to my classroom.
“Mr. Hartman told me to come and find you. He needs a sub for a while or something.”
I sighed defeated. I was never going to go get any planning time. “Fine, I’ll go. You get to your next class.”
The freshman looked at her weird but obeyed still. I was really starting to hate the first day of school.
I walked up the two flights of stairs to chemistry room 300, Mr. Hartman’s class. He was there with the early teacher’s pets at his desk.
“You asked for me?” I asked dully from the doorway. Mr. Hartman looked over the students and at the door.
“Ah, yes Ms. Greene. I needed to ask a favor of you.”
“Favors on the first day of school? How bold.” He obviously didn’t sense my bad mood since he chuckled stupidly and waved for his students to go to their seats. Suck ups.
“I was wondering if you could help my class in the beginning with an experiment.”
“You want me to use my planning period to watch over your students?”
“I’ll by you lunch.” Was he hitting on me? Nah, not possible. He’s so old.
“Fine.” Yes, this is really stupid of me, but I forgot to bring my lunch and I needed to eat today. The old chemistry teacher grinned stupidly, then started shuffling around for items on his desk. I went and sat down with the teacher’s chemistry book in my hand. I was reading about the experiment that he pointed out we would be doing. Why was I the only one that other teachers asked for help?
Mr. Hartman was still looking for items when the rest of the class entered and sat at desks. I was still looking down, but I could feel eyes on me. I looked up and saw Haven. He then looked away and out the window. I traced his eyes to the sun. I smirked, but that quickly disappeared when Mr. Hartman started teaching about the table of elements. I just kept reading, losing my place in time until, before I knew it, the class was already starting the lab.
I looked over to Haven and saw him paired up with another girl who, according to the attendance record, was named Dusty. She asked for something and obviously woke Haven from a daydream since he spun around and spilled a beaker of liquid. They cleaned it up, but I noticed that the matches were soaked.
Dusty picked it up and struck it, the tip of the match burst with flame. Both students looked amazed at it; I, on the other hand, reached for my glasses on top of my head. I pulled them down and saw a red glow all around the girl. She was another elemental. That’s four.
……………………
I know that was very long, but Elise gave me a lot to go through. Not blaming, just stating fact.
I walked with fast steps, trying to avoid most human contact. Some other woodwind players managed to catch me, but I got out of some meaningless conversations with ease.
It wasn’t like I didn’t like them; band was family. Some of them are just too different.
About one minutes after I got into the band room, the bell rang and I speed walked off to lunch. I smelled the cafeteria aroma and forgot that it wasn’t really food for about a second.
“I swear- that Miss Greene is a pedophile.” I heard Haven say to me. I grinned.
“You know, it’s not a good thing to swear.” He rolled his eyes then looked at one of the tables. His blue eyes glaring at someone. I followed his gaze and saw Mr. Sam and Miss Greene.
“It looks like you have an adult stalker.” I said, trying my best not to laugh. Then Miss Greene and Mr. Same looked at us and then whipped their heads around and started talking.
“Creepy.” I noted, and went into the line to get lunch.
“What was that song that you knew so much about?”
“Mars, Bringer of War.”
I knew what my lunch was even before I opened it. PP&J used to be my favorite sandwich, but for several weeks I had this for lunch and I was sick of it. Maybe I could write a book about it, "What Happens to your Favorite Foods". I almost smiled at the idea, but the sandwich in front of me was to much of a depressor.
((Jeez guys, I’m soooooooooooooooo sorry about not posting for forever. I’ve actually been busy with babysitting a lot lately. And getting to the library to post stuff is harder because my mom’s been out of town. ANYwho, I’m done with my excuses/explanations))
I smelled the cafeteria food and felt my stomach growl in anticipation. Our cafeteria food isn’t as bad as most schools are. Better than the elementary and middle schools at least.
I scanned the room for an empty table when two something-or-anothers poked me in the side. I jumped and whipped around and saw Haven smirking at me.
“Stalker.” I murmured.
“I resent that.” He said back, glaring at me.
Then, as per being me, I turned around and rammed into someone. Figured I should make a habit out of that, you know?
“Smooth.” Haven muttered under his breath. I looked at who I ran into. He was tall. How lovely…more giganitical people. (I am well aware this is not a word, just to clear that up with you)
“Sorry,” I muttered, looking down at my feet.
“Did you nearly kill someone, again, Kaleb?” I looked up just enough to see a red haired girl glaring at Kaleb.
“Other way around.” He smiled at her.
“Sorry.” I said again, biting the inside of my lip.
“It’s okay…I’m Kaleb, and that’s my little sister, Dusty.” I smiled weakly, clutching my elbow nervously.
“Erica.” My voice was quiet and a little shaky. “Uh…I better go get my food.” I excused myself and walked towards the line.
Glancing to my left, I noticed Miss Greene and Mr. Sam looking at me strangely, whispering. Creepy.
I bought myself a pizza and sat down at a random empty table. Again.
So alone…
I saw Erica sitting alone at a table near the window and went over to join her. It seemed wrong that anyone should sit by themselves in a high school cafeteria. She didn't talk to me as I sat down, but that was what I expected.
How the heck was I supposed to react? For the first time in…uh…a long time, someone had voluntarily sat down next to me. Our school is made of jerks (mostly) or anything but I’ve been a loner since…the incident…
I swallowed my pizza and looked down at the table, “Hi.” I murmured, and I saw (peripheral vision; band camp) Gregory kind of stiffen.
“Hi.” I looked up and managed a small smile. Something out of the corner of my eye made me look at Kaleb and Dusty. She slapped him on the shoulder and was talking to him angrily. Kaleb was laughing. Big brothers…
“I swear…that Greene teacher is stalking me.” Haven muttered as he walked to the table I was sitting at. I raised my eyebrows.
“What?”
“Mr. ‘Sam’ and Miss Greene are staring at us…and whispering. Maybe they’re pedophiles or have a Lolita complex…or both.”
I looked over at the two ‘stalkers’ and they whipped their heads around…they’d obviously been staring us down.
“Very creepy.”
"Stalkers usually are..." Gregory muttered. Haven glared at him just as he looked down to eat.
……..
Lunch period had finally come and I sat at the table where Sam was. All I had was a sandwich and bottled water, but that was fine. I didn’t have enough time this morning to prepare a good lunch.
“So how many have you found?” Sam asked not looking up from his lunch.
“At least four. Fire, light, water, and darkness…”
“Amazing, you managed to find two pairs of opposites,” he said sarcasm hinted in his voice. I rolled my eyes but then saw a group of kids. The water elemental that I had seen earlier had just ran into an older boy and the four were talking. I glared a bit at the stalker boy I had seen many times this morning.
“I swear that one of the boys are stalking me,” I muttered.
Sam looked over at where I was staring then looked back.
“A student is stalking you?”
“Yes, he keeps showing up in every class that I’m in.”
“That would be the school’s fault, not his. You’re being paranoid.”
“I am not.”
“I told you what happens when you where those glasses of yours too much…”
“I am not being paranoid! Gah!”
“Whatever. Just remember not to draw too much attention to yourself, okay?”
“Yeah, yeah…”
Sam just shook his head and went back to eating. I started watching the light and water elementals conversing with another student. The light elemental looked at me weird then talked to the girl. She looked up which made my head twist away remembering that I wasn’t supposed to draw attention.
"They re both looking at me. Is stalking contagious?"
"That is it. You are oficially paranoid."
I glowered then went back to eating my sandwich, not in the mood to argue that I was NOT PARANOID!
By the time I was half done with my sandwich a commotion occurred on the other side of the cafeteria. From what I could see, a squirrel or chipmunk had landed on a table and grabbed something. It was probably eating one of the student’s lunches. Sam had already gotten up and went to see what the commotion was.
I guess this was the new "thing" this year. Teachers stalking students and vice versa. Last year it was all about the "Witch", a substitute principal who happened to dress in black all the time, and had an uncanny ability to to tell if someone was lying.
Suddenly there was a commotion over at the table next to us.
I looked around my shoulder and saw a few chipmunks and squirrels fighting over Lilith’s lunch.
“Don’t, fight over it! Share it, at least.” Rodents were fighting over her lunch and she was scolding them over fighting over it? Holy crap, she’s more messed up than the stalking teachers.
“What happened?” Mr. Sam asked after pushing through some laughing students.
“I offered my sandwich to that scrawny squirrel right there,” she pointed at one squirrel cowering at the corner of her table, “and the rest just came on their own.”
Mr. Sam frowned and motioned for stalker number two.
Miss Greene came over and put some old glasses on. Her eyes grew wide and she whispered something to Mr. Sam. Very suspicious.
“What the heck…” Haven muttered, shaking his head, “I was just joking about the stalker part but…”
Jaden:
I saw Sam motion for me to come over. Why does he always drag me into things? I mean seriously! People will start to think that we are a couple or… or something.
Giving up my delicious lunch (NOT) I walked over to where Sam was and saw a girl shooing away chipmunks and squirrels away from her food. She was trying to get one little squirrel to come closer though.
“What’s wrong?” I whispered.
“Put your glasses on.”
I pushed the ancient glasses from my head to my eyes and saw it. A shining brown glow around the sandwich girl who I saw was Lillith from my first hour. How is it that all of these kids are winding up in my classes? You never see too many of them in Sam’s! I blame him, it’s all Sam’s fault.
“Yep, she’s another,” I whispered to Sam, who nodded.
“Okay everyone! There is nothing to see here! Go back to your lunches! Lillith, do not give the animals anymore food.”
Lillith nodded and pulled the sandwich back. All the squirrels and chipmunks scampered off when they realized that they weren’t going to get any food.
I walked off and Sam followed. “So how many does that make?” he asked.
“Five. By the way, your counting skills are just great since I already told you that I had found four before this incident. That means that I am winning four to one.”
“We’ll see about that.”
“And why do you have to keep calling me over to double check if they are elementals?” I started to complain. “You need to get some sort of detector.”
“Like what? Your crazy glasses?”
“They have contacts nowadays as well.”
Everyone settled down after Mr. Sam said to, but everyone (Ok, just us) continued to stare at the stalker teachers. Honestly, they were frightening.
"Haven. Haven. Haven!"
I whipped my head around to look at Erica.
"Stop looking at the teachers," she whispered. "People are gonna think you're...weird or something." she said, using 'weird' in a different context than it usually was.
"Don't care." I murmured. "It won't be anything new." I said, the bitterness in my voice surprising me. But nevertheless, I turned around and picked up my sandwich.
Erica shook her head slightly and wrinkled her brow a bit, an expression that made me smile softly.
Apparently it did the same for Gregory, because when I looked up he was smiling at her too.
I couldn't help the glare that came across my face then, nor the soft growl that came from my throat. I didn't like him. Not at all.
He caught my glare and glared back. Suddenly the sky outside darkened and I saw the wind begin to blow the trees back and forth.
Ok guys, I'm SOOOOO sorry for not posting. I have been SOOOO busy this summer.
But now that school's about to start back, I'll be able to get back in the swing of things.
Again, I'm so sorry i haven't been here. And I'm also sorry this is so weird. I just wanted to post something. (Because I felt guilty. And I want to get moving, lol) Well, thanks for being so patient and faithful guys!
“What the heck?” I heard Miss Greene say, looking at the sky. She gave her stalker counterpart at look and I stopped paying attention to them. What worried me was that my two friends…
My thoughts froze. The last time I had friends…
“Stop it.” I whispered, my voice icier than I intended. They looked at me curiously, then glared at each other again. Guys.
“Will you stop it!” I said, louder, the ice in my voice purposely. Hail started pouring outside.
“We have to hurry.” I heard Miss Greene murmur, looking through the old glasses at Gregory. But I wasn’t really paying attention to that.
Gregory and Haven were staring with confused expressions at me. I sighed and shook my head. “Your macho-manly-trying-to-beat-each-other-at-anything thing is starting to tick me off. Just because the weather is screwed up, and the rodents are too, doesn’t mean we have to be.”
They looked away, mad at the world. “And Haven, you’re right, who gives a crap what the idiots at this school think.”
“Uh...yeah.”
The weather calmed down a bit. I sighed; it wouldn’t be raining all day.
“You should be our football team’s coach. They need some help.” I whipped my head around to see Kaleb.
“You shouldn’t eavesdrop,” I muttered, feeling like my brother was making fun of me.
“I was just brining this over,” He handed a piece of paper to me. I recognized it as something I’d thrown down on paper earlier, “you dropped it when you ran into me this morning.” He smiled and I took it.
“Thanks.”
“Harassing young girls again, Kaleb?” Dusty came from nowhere and punched his arm..
“What else do I have to do in this school?”
I stifled a giggle and took a bite of my sandwich.
