Yeah so no real goals this year. Need to remember how to poem. We'll see how this goes.

The past is not clay, but the future is not stone (2023, not completed but I won April Madness so that's pretty neat)
lost stones, old address books, and spreadsheet weeds (2022, not completed)
a year lost, at home with nothing to write about (2021, not completed)
weathered, yes, but still standing (2020, completed but barely)
saturn is home, and all is well (2019, completed)
all the thoughts you wish weren't real (2018, not completed)
buried under the coffee table (2017, completed)
the (non) master of my own (sham) destiny (2016, completed)
often wandering, still quite lost (2015, not completed)
Niteowl's Nest (2014, not completed)
Niteowl's Nonsensical Nothingness (2013, not completed but so many bangers)
Nite's Poetry Dumpster (2008, not completed)

1. perish the (non-poetic) thought!

my brain's last good metaphors
have rotted away
like back-of-the-fridge vegetables,
plucked off a grocery store shelf
in a moment of naive optimism.

I take out the trash and wonder why
I keep wasting money on delusions.

Note for future-me and other future visitors
Spoiler! :
On April 1, 2024, The Young Writer's Society ceased to exist and was transformed into the Young Vegetable Society. Announcement here.. Naturally, I had to acknowledge this in my first poem of the month. I am going to try to be more obnoxious about describing any prompts/links that I use as inspo, after having found so many broken links in my old NaPos.

I just love this poem:] In such a creative way, you described the loss of creativity. It's so beautiful and simply.. flawless :). I look forward to reading more from you!

2. Inertia

Just write. One word after
Another. That’s how it starts.
That’s how stories become more
Than flashes of lightning when you’re
In the shower or driving or in a work call
And you think you’ll remember later
But you never do. Or if you do
It’s not the same as it was in your head
And you wonder why you bother trying to create.
The words never live up to their potential

But if I’ve learned anything from
Digging into my own poetic ruins,
It’s that the ugliest bricks are prettier
Than you thought, and certainly better
Than all the forgotten word palaces
In your mind.

Spoiler! :
hey nite! i love your poetry so far. your second poem is my favorite so far. i think it's the perfect poem to post on yws, seeing as we're all writers who have struggled with creativity and inspiration. the ending message is beautiful; how beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and what authors think is their worst work might end up helping someone else. i can't wait to read more of your poetry; good luck with the rest of your napo!

Thank you @Rose and @momonster! This has been a rough start to NaPo, but I’m getting there.

3. I prayed for fire

I prayed for fire, prayed to want
again, prayed to feel anything but frozen.

Somehow I had forgotten
that when you’re burning inside
it hurts to hide it, hurts to pretend
that the world is the same as it was before you met its axis.

But even if it hurts, I prefer it,
Over the slow death of wanting nothing at all.

Spoiler! :
Eager to read your thread again this year nite, your's is always one of my favorites to follow. Poem two "inertia" I think perfectly describes the struggle of NaPo writing process (at least, I certainly can relate to it!) just trying to get one word out and then not really sure about if it works or not, but slowly working through the month.

Just write. One word after
Another. That’s how it starts.

Yes!

Looking forward to following along with you! You've got this!
you should know i am a time traveler &
there is no season as achingly temporary as now
but i have promised to return

4. shut up about the sun

The sky grew somewhat darker
Around 3 PM on Monday,
And I betrayed my younger self yet again.

If I was a better person,
I would have planned, taken the day off
And driven to somewhere in Ohio,
Maybe made a long weekend out of it.

But I don’t get that much PTO,
And I hate traffic jams
More than I like living
And I figured it would just be cloudy
Wherever I went, so there was no point.

So I pretended to work
But mostly just hated myself
(That is one thing I could put
On any to-do list just to check something off)
And all I could tell you
Is that around 3 pm on Monday,
The sky grew somewhat darker.

Spoiler! :
context for my future self/anyone else who's curious. There was a total solar eclipse on Monday April 8, 2024. My area was like 98% totality, and I really should have planned better to see totality, but I did not. Figured if I did it would probably just be cloudy/the traffic would be terrible (from what I've heard, traffic was terrible but Ohio was relatively not cloudy and even pics I have seen from cloudy areas are pretty flipping cool. Ah well.

Spoiler! :
Thanks @alliyah! Sorry to disappoint this year, I'm basically "no thoughts just vibes" this year. No idea what to write or how to write it and prompts are just meh to me.

5. some refuse from the notes app on my lunch break

Just another morning, trying to drag my eyes away
from the never-ending content screen
and to the blank Notes app
where there's nothing to look at but a blinking
cursor until you write something.

Even as you know creating feels better
than passive consumption,
still you wander back to the screen.

6. hush, the muse is sleeping

Perhaps you can only have
A caged muse play for so long
Before she collapses on the ground,
Her fingers bleeding from the lyre.

Perhaps marveling at her gifts
From glory days
And demanding she do better
Is not the way to make her sing again.

Perhaps it is time to let her rest.

Spoiler! :
I love the honesty in these poems and in your efforts. <3 It really resonates with me because it's a lot about what I've been feeling, but not voicing, about writing, and that strikes a chord.
I like the consideration that this "Is not the way to make her sing again" in 6.
I also loved the way you talked about not seeing the eclipse -- it was really poignant in its own right. <3 The repetition at the end really brought it home.
Thanks for bringing us your poems this April, even if it's a different process than it might have been in the past!

7. Victory lap

Something they don’t tell losers about winning
Is that victory is not eternal.
There’s always someone gunning for a rematch,
Dreaming of the day your name is etched out
And theirs shines in its place.

You must always be on guard
In case your friends pull a Brutus
And as you’re bleeding in the streets,
The judges argue about whether your legacy
Is worth commemorating.

Most victories don’t make you a war hero,
Worthy of a state funeral and a 21 gun salute—
Often the only prize is surviving.

And perhaps it is better to die young and betrayed
Than to be old and bitter on your front porch
Telling the youngsters who have surpassed you
That their wins don’t really count.

Spoiler! :
Thanks @Que! I feel like winning April Madness last year, as awesome as it was, made me feel pressured to repeat the feat this year and write something amazing and it’s just…not happening. So I wrote this about that feeling. But then it got away from me a bit. Lots of mixed metaphors. And then I started working in other things: the last stanza was inspired by this story I read about an older female basketball player who’s claiming that Caitlin Clark beating her record for something “doesn’t really count” because…idk reasons, may need to look this up later. 8. an emo mosquito's lament

i never asked to be a killer.

in the pond, they said we would grow
into powerful women, the envy of all the insects,
but we don't get pretty wings or honeycombs,
just a need to pierce skin and scales.

even our crowning glory, our roles in the death
of half the men who have ever lived,
is not ours, but our plasmodium passengers.
we're just the uber drivers of disease.

all power comes from blood, i suppose,
but did i have to be born powerful?

Spoiler! :
Yes, I am aware the claim that malaria has killed half of all people who have ever lived is basically nonsense, but mosquitos are not known for their fact-checking abilities.

Prompt was from the poetic line generator: "the insects above you hurt beneath the surface"
"You do ill if you praise, but worse if you censure, what you do not understand." Leonardo Da Vinci

9. you're calling on a sunday afternoon, and yet i'm the crazy one

i told my psychiatrist
i had visions of swirling stars
and sunflowers and men without ears.

perhaps i should have mentioned
that i was at the van gogh exhibit.

there are no olive trees here.

Spoiler! :
Loosely based on a true story. So, as you might or might not know, I have bipolar disorder, but it's pretty well controlled with meds. Like most doctors, my former psychiatrist switched to telehealth after COVID hit. He's also old as dirt, so we didn't do Zoom, just phone calls, which is fine enough. What was not fine was that our appointments were nominally on Monday evenings, but for some reason he would just call at some random time on the Saturday or Sunday before. Luckily, I'm pretty stable so our appointments weren't too intense, but it always caught me off guard and was super irritating. One day as I was complaining about this to my therapist (who was at the same practice), she said that he did this to other clients as well and she said the same thing: "Why are you answering?" Literally a few weeks after we have this conversation, my friend and I go to the Van Gogh exhibit and...guys. He literally called while I was in line at the gift shop. I didn't answer, but I really should have just for the lulz.

Last line references this painting, which Van Gogh painted while in an asylum. This was actually part of the exhibit.

10. Who needs sleep when there’s a new Taylor swift album out?

(cw: brief mention of death/suicidal thoughts)

Spoiler! :

It’s another sunken Thursday night
I’m falling asleep to morning bird cries
Don’t know what I should do with my life
Since I let it fade, yeah I let it fade

I’m a woman born ugly, a force invisible
Would life have been better if I was born asexual?
Never noticed cute boys, never tried to dance with them,
Never crushed on a girl, oh my god what’s happening

But it’s all stale day dreams in my mind
I’m an unmasked phantom haunting the sidelines
Don’t worry, you’ll never hear me cry
‘Cause I’m fine, swear to god I’m fine
Just want to die in the morning light,
don’t know if anything’s worth the fight

But with morning coffee, thoughts of death fade.
This happens every single day.
I don’t know why I never change.
