Actually Phoebus is killed at the end of the first act, not being the main character. He is a jerk in the book. There is another guy, though, the main lead who falls in love with Esmeralda, but he ends marrying someone else.
And past tense is "hanged"

Yeah, I remember something about a goat, but why would he fall in love with one?
And the main character, whose name I forget, is like the Nick Carroway of the story. As a matter of fact he isn't really the main character at all, that being Quasimoto. Whatshisface just drives the story, him being used as a first person narrator speaking in the omniscient third person.
