Randomly came across this today:
http://oceania.org/

Apparently, the City of Oceania was a real project that started in 1993 but died due to a lack of interest just a year later. The founders wanted to base it around Libertarian ideals, which would probably mean minimal (if any) government.

In any case, there are a ton of images on the site that I think people could use as a setting for any number of stories. Science-fiction comes to mind first, but any genre would fit just fine (except for historical fiction).

Also, would you live in such a place? I'd love to.

I say we bring back the idea and make it YWS' headquarters.

*WANTS*

Gosh, and I have a little story idea just waiting for such a setting. xD

:O *stares*

That's pretty awesome. I'd kick back there any day.

Oh I totally agree with Jabbs on this one! Anyone got a couple million dollars lying around?

Wow. =o The place looks gorgeous. Great place to write. :) But little or no government? It sounds like things could get pretty messy.

Storms would be a nightmare.

But other than that, awesome. Sounds like a paradise from Brave New World. You know the islands they sent the thinkers away to so they could be happy and be with other thinkers and not cause the rest of the world trouble? Yep.

Edit: Also, where would all the waste and garbage and other generally unwanted things go? That pretty harbor probably wouldn't stay very pretty for long, unless some other country (a land based one, probably) would be willing to take it on. Still, it's a very interesting idea. Now watch a flood of Oceania-based stories pop up in the forums, haha.

Storms wouldn't necessarily be a nightmare. A floating city could simply maneuver itself out of harms way. And trash also wouldn't be too much of a problem. Aircraft carriers, which are essentially floating cities, carry trash incinerators to dispose of trash.

Hmmm, I think I this has been used for a setting, loosely *points to Pendragon 2, city of Faar* The setting is a planet with very little real land, and all the people live on floating cities. I'm still gonna use it though for something. It could be perfect for a character of mine so he can't simply leave his adventure.

And Bond, for the money issue. I command all of YWS to invade the coach cushions of the world!
