So everyone knows now (because I'm sure to forget to tell everyone otherwise), I'm not going to be here from the October 20th to November 2nd. Well ... is the whole country covered in ash and stuff?? Are there any safe havens/houses?? Could we find a military base and try to contact other countries??

More like 3/4-ish of the country. Since America is one of the main providers of wheat, poultry, and good ol' beef, a dramatic increase in starvation is most likely happening around the globe, especially third-world countries, which would mean very little help would be coming from them. But searching for a military base is a good idea.
