YWS Serial Challenge

Greetings, friends and strangers!

Come one, come all, and enter in to Shino's Serial Challenge! (Yes, I know I'm Paracosm, but alliteration makes everything better.) Chances are, you've read a serial novel, but long after it was actually a serial. For instance, have you read:

Anna Keranina
The PIckwick Papers
Huckleberry Finn?

If you haven't, it's okay. I haven't either. (Oh gosh, don't tell anyone... those are required reading for future famous writers... right?) Now, you are probably wondering what a serial is, if not, skip ahead a paragraph to see the competition.

A 'serial' is short for a 'serial novel', which is basically a story that is written on the fly and published in chapters or 'episodes' on a semi-periodic basis. A serial can be never ending, like a soap, or it can last a few weeks. It all depends on how long it takes for the author to let the story realize itself.

This 'competition' will basically go like this. If you run a serial with at least one entrie a week for three months, I will give you a prize of 3000 points! There will be several 'bounties' as you go along. If you finish these bounties you'll get bonus points. The user who gets the most points by the end of the three months wins!

Rules

1. Each entry is encouraged to be at least 300-500 words long.
2. You should strive for one entrie a week. It shouldn't be too hard, most of us can crank out 500 words in fifteen minutes or less.
3. Make it to the end of the three month period.
4. Post in this thread so that I know you are competing. Also, please link to each entry in your serial in your original message stating your entry, with a brief description of your story. A paragraph or two is okay, don't get too caught up in the rules.
5. Reader input is strongly encouraged. Read reviews to see what your readers think about the story, so you can surprise them.
6. Review other serials, not required but strongly encouraged.

Also, it starts September 29, and goes on for twelve weeks, the rough equivalent of three months.

Sounds interesting! However the content amount seems odd. Just my two bits. I hope many people enter!
I may do so myself, but I don't feel that small bits of a story are my thing. I much rather prefer to start posting things in unnecessarily large chunks.

That's just the suggested amount, as long as you are posting regularly, it's not a huge deal how many words you post each post. As long as it's roughly 600-1500 words a week, it's all good!

This is a really cool idea.
However I do see one flaw.
It costs 300-500 points to post, and if many people participate in this it will prob be at its max which is 500. If one posted 36 episodes that would cost a whopping 18000 points. (and 1500 a week for 16 weeks = 24000) That's more than I have, and I know that most people on this sire have far less points than me, including your dear self. Sure reviews work, but reviews take time, and three a week is already quite much time for many.

either way you may have to reconsider this.

It made me sort of stop to think about something that could be a feature of the publication center for serials or even novels as such, in where episodes or chapters, are based within one post (with perhaps an index or scrolling to find the most recent one) were you post a new chapter or episode that appears beneath the previous one, (with the reviews in a little sub thing that can be hidden or revealed.) In this case each chapter added to the collection could only cost maybe 50 additional points, as you are no creating a whole new page for it, and it all stays together. This would be a ton of coding but it is just a suggestion perhaps.

Math is such a thing. These rules will be revised in the morning.

I agree with all your rules and the numbers you pick seem reasonable IF you disregard the points... Ideally if you could ask Nate for some sort of reductions to points for posts about this... but yeah.

By the way, I am in either way... although if it comes down to having to do 10-15 reviews per week to cover the cost I might fail XD

Here ye here ye! The YWS Serial Challenge rules have been modified. There can be TWO winners... wait no, wrong game. You only have to submit one entry a week now.

I'd be game for this; with the new requirements for the challenge it'd only take 40 green room reviews to get enough points to participate.

Definitely doing this!

Curious here my friend. Should I try get in my first part for review day or wait until afterwards?
(since technically its not the 29th for some until later than I as it will be the 29th shortly for me.)
