The Tavern

Nate · 2007-06-06T02:28:59Z

His wife was the first one to suggest reopening the Tavern. Then his friends, and even finally his enemies beseeched him to reopen the Tavern. But it had been so long, and he had vowed to never again be involved in the drink dispensary industry. The mix-up in drink orders on that final day just never did sit well with him. But now Nate stood in front of the old building, refurnished yet retaining all its old charm. The hinges on the door were shot, the floorboards creaked, and the shingle roof owed much to a thick moss. But there was now a new ribbon on the door. As he stepped in, he flicked the light switch on only to discover it didn't work. After a brief interval of opening the windows, he turned the sign over to say "Open: Serving Soda, Milk, and Juice!" Now he just waited behind the bar for his first customer to arrive.

Catch picks up his toweled-off head and tries to reattach it, but it can't seem to stay put. He gives up and decides to hold his head under his arm.

"Hey, Cat, sense you're apparently the bartender now... can I get a coke?"

Cat smiles wearily, picking herself up from the place where she was thrown by the rampaging troll.

"I would beat you up for shoving me, troll, but I could use a break. By all means, work away," Cat says, chuckling.

The powerful Coke spray sends Catch's bodiless head out the Tavern's window.

Catch picks up the whiteboard, erases Cat's Simpsons drawings, and writes out:
"That was delicious."

Way, way back in the 1988 Presidential election, then Vice President George H W Bush had a phrase he liked to use: "A Thousand Points of Light." It refers to the idea that a community is made up of people who contribute in a thousand, different small ways, but with each helping to illuminate their community. It's a phrase I think about a lot when it comes to YWS. Looking forward, the site will continue to change and grow, but it will always remain a community dedicated to promoting creative writing as a favorite pastime.
