The Arcana Academy

[Preface: This is a literate "Storybook", this idea I've posted a few other places and I wanted to see how many people would be willing to try.]

Arcana & Noctrem Academy

Arcana Academy and Noctrem Academy are polar opposites – Arcana encourages and inspires students to be the very best that they can be, and to use their supernatural abilities to help those in need, to save those who need saving, and to just be amazing citizens. Noctrem on the other hand drives their students to be the worst they can be – terrorizing the citizens, scaring those around them, and causing trouble wherever possible. The two Academies have always been rivals, and only interact with each other during sporting events, or the annual tournament, to determine which school is the best. Every year, the winner from each school changes, so no real answer has been determined since the tournaments began three hundred years ago.

Last month, Noctrem was set alight by someone in a black, hooded jacket, hiding their face. No-one was able to determine who this criminal was, but the fire burnt down the entire school, and resulted in three deaths – one teacher and two students. With the students who decided to carry on with their studies after the destruction of their school, it has been decided that they will go to Arcana, and study with those “goodie-two-shoes” they hate so much. They will bunk there, eat there, and study there – but how will those from Arcana accept these enemies?

7. When we have the characters, I shall be creating a relationship thread to help us get an insight into how our characters feel about each other.

Why Noctrem? Everything was so much more alluring. I loved the feeling of invincibility the powers brought me. I craved the attention, the power, I wanted people to see me as mystical, yet devious. I wanted… no… needed to prove to people that I’m not just some pretty face.

]Shape-Shifting: The ability to change form into that of a variety of animals. My most common form is a fox, this is how I used to scare the shit out of my Nanny's. Or a snake, what I would do is run downstairs with an open cage and scream that my snake had gone missing, go into the yard, shift and come back inside, scaring the Nanny.

Shifting isn't easy though, it takes a lot of energy out of me, and it is quite painful. Yet the more I practice, the less painful it becomes. It's almost as if the animal[s] are INSIDE me, just scratching to come out. Sometimes I feel I’m more animal than human.

I guess growing up with high end parents, I’m pretty high fashion. I wear a lot of skinny jeans, loose fitted tops, short skirts/shorts, and tank tops. I got my belly button pierced when I was 15, and I have my cartilage, and regular ears. I stand about 5’6” and I have a slender figure with seemingly perfect curves. I wear a necklace with a golden ring on the end of it. It was my father’s wedding ring, which he had left on my mother’s pillow when he walked out. Mom considered pawning it, but I grabbed it from her jewelry box and kept it on a chain, and I wear it every day.

I love to be doing things outside. I grew up with my mother, a Celebrity stylist, in the heart of LA, and I did a lot of modeling. Eventually, I picked up guitar when I was nine, and started voice lessons around the same time, mostly focusing on jazz vocal. I also love to explore, and travel, and not to brag, but I have already been to London, Spain, the Bahamas and many other places. Some would call me a spoiled brat, but why the hell do I care what they think?

I am extremely smart, top in my class, and I know how to play my cards, and I have been told I’m extremely flirtatious, even if it’s with teachers. My teachers at my old school called me a rule breaker, I call it being an individual. Yet they couldn't say anything because I always show up to class, work done, even if I do show up half an hour late. Some psychologist once told me that I am extremely flirty and a rule breaker because I have abandonment issues… Crazy shit…. Right…?

I love playing guitar by myself and writing songs. I normally hang out with Koa a lot, the only thing that has been truly constant in my life. I guess I find comfort in Koa, and how he doesn't judge, he just loves me for who I am. Not because I’m some model, or I have a lot of money, or that I am connected to so many famous people. I guess you could say I’m more than passive aggressive when I get upset; I normally don't like to, but if I need to I could take someone down. I mean, it's not really a man's world anymore, women are fighting for themselves now. I also find enjoyment in long boarding and long walks.

I was born to a beautiful young couple, my mother -- Tracy Lawler -- being 23, my father -- Darren Lawler -- being 25. My father was a big hot shot record producer, taking over the family recording studio after he studied at college, and my mother was a hair stylist at the time, and worked her way up the chain once she married Darren. We lived a happy life together as a family, and I did some traveling as a young child, and got to meet a lot of my parent's clients. I was the golden child, a pageant girl, and a baby model, my parent's pride and joy. On my fifth birthday I had pleaded my Dad for a kitty and I received a little male, grey Siberian cat that I named Koa.

But, behind the curtains is where everything goes wrong. Once both my parent's careers took off, they began becoming too busy to take care of me, and to keep the family connected. When I was six, my dad began having an affair with one of his client's, and I would listen to the midnight fights when he would come home at late hours, Mother screaming at him about how he smelled of another girl's perfume. Two months of fighting, and I was caught dead in the middle. My dad would use me as a pawn to push my mother's buttons. He would try to buy my love with extravagant gifts, which of course, I didn't mind at all. I would just use his money anyway, especially when he started becoming physically abusive towards me and Mom. I watched from my windowsill, my father drive off in the dead of night after a violent fight. I think I even heard a few vases crash onto the floor, but I was too afraid to go downstairs. That morning, I found my mother sitting at the kitchen table, a grim look on her face as she gripped the coffee mug with white knuckles, her face tear streaked. It was then I learned that everyone leaves eventually, whether it be physically, or emotionally.

Around this time, my rage and emotions boiled up something very powerful inside of me: My abilities started showing up in small ways. At first, it was an inhumane growl when I became infuriated. Then sometimes my nails would become thick, like that of Koa’s. I started to notice my bones feel lighter, more...bendable? And I would sit in my room, and sometimes ears would grow out of my head. or I would grow a tail -- since I was around Koa all the time, that was one of my very first things I had shifted into. One night, I felt a strange tingling sensation throughout my body, and then let out a scream of pain, and blacked out.

Apparently, my mother found me in cat form, lying on the floor, Koa standing protectively over my newly formed body. The next morning, I had returned to normal, yet it came with a side affect of a pounding headache and a terrible aching sensation all over. My mother explained that it was rooted in our ancestors, considering my mother’s side of the family was part Cherokee. My mother said it was a gift to be cherished, not abused, but since the gift came so young, I would end up practicing on the Nanny's Mother would hire, scaring them away for good.

When I was supposed to start high school, I got a letter from Noctrem Academy. I finds comfort in my animal forms, and I am learning to control the shifting as time goes on.

Home Town: Born in Tofino, Canada but grew up in Byron Bay, Australia.
Sexuality: Homosexual. He doesn't hide it, but he doesn't really tell anyone either (unless they ask).

School: Noctrem
Power: Technopathy. He can control all technology within a radius of 100 meters. All he needs to do is focus on the machine and tell it what to do. He can't make the machine do something that isn't normally capable of doing. For example, most cars don't have a computer system that enables him to turn it without actually sitting behind the wheel. At most he can start it and turn on the cruise control to make it go froward.

Likes: Being outdoors, hiking, fishing hunting and such. He likes nature in general, which is quite conflicting with his powers. Animals, all kinds (with the exception of spiders and snakes). He has been known to keep animals in his room, even though he's not allowed to. People (those he cares about), though he has a hard time opening up to others, and only has a few trusted friends. Clothes. As much as he'd like to deny it, he likes dressing well and looking good. You'd never see him in sweatpants. Oh, and money, lots and lots of money.
Dislikes: Loud sounds. He doesn't like when people or whatever is being noisy, and prefers piece and quiet. When something bad happens to his friends, needs no explanation, eh? His accent. It's a mix of Canadian and Australian, and he has tried to get rid of it, but it's still there, not as obvious as when he first moved to the states, but definitely there. Unfashionable and/or untidy clothes. He hates to admit it, but he can't stand people who don't care how they look, and thinks that it shows that they do not care enough about themselves or have bad self confidence. He's not very fond of piercings or tattoos either, unless they really stand for something. Bugs and snakes. He's not afraid of them, but he doesn't like them either. Especially mosquitoes, they've ruined too many of his hikes.
Fears: Being rejected, abandoned or betrayed. That someone he cares about could die.

Personality: He doesn't have many friends, at lest not people who he considers as friends. Ben doesn't usually open up to people and he has some trust issues, as he is afraid of getting hurt. The handful of people that he cares about he really cares about. He's protective, caring, gentle and friendly towards them, but the rest of the world might as well not exist for all he cares. You're either on his good side, or you don't exist at all.

He has no qualms about using his powers as he wants, and he doesn't really care if he hurts people in the process. He's very greedy, since he from an early age was taught that you're nothing without money and reputation, and thanks to his powers he always has more money than he could possibly spend. He's proud too, and seldom admits when he's wrong. He carries himself with dignity, chin high and good posture, and he does it without thinking about it. He sometimes often comes across as haughty.

He's smart, and has never needed to make an effort to get good grades, actually he has never needed to put effort into anything, which has resulted in him becoming quite lazy. He doesn't lift a finger unless he has to, or he thinks that whatever he's going to do is fun (like hiking).

Oh, and one last thing. He's very outspoken, and does not care much for tact. People might think he's rude, but he just speaks his mind and doesn't hold back when someone is doing something that he dislikes.

His parents had always told him to be best, but not to follow the rules or be considerate of others, so he used his powers to get whatever he wanted.

When he was 15 he feel on love with a guy from his class, named Lucas, and they started dating. Ben's parents didn't like it, but by then he had stopped listening to them, and his powers were frightening them too much for them to really protest. He and Lucas stayed together until Ben's 17th birthday. They were out surfing together when Lucas suddenly got a seizure. When Ben had managed to pull him ashore he was already dead. Ever since that day Ben hasn't allowed himself to fall in love with anyone, and he doesn't open up easily either, since he's too afraid that if he does he's going to lose that person. He's still mourning Lucas, but he doesn't show it.

He needed a fresh start, and his parents wanted to get rid of him, so he agreed to go to a school that his father had managed to find. A school for people like him. When he first arrived at Noctrem he didn't really talk to anyone, but he gradually warmed up, especially since he noticed that the others were just like him when it came to using their powers to get what they want.

Other: I'd be very happy if he managed to get a new boyfriend and get over Lucas ^^

Power: Umbrakinesis, Umbrakinesis is the power of controlling darkness with the mind. The user can make dark object solid for combat and it can make the user pure dark energy.It can also be used to control shadows and darken places that are bright like a light room,this involves negative energy.The only problem is that it causes her to become more vicious as she continues to use this power, the longer period of time she uses it the more likely she is to hurt someone. It's effects do were off after a time, and viciousness is just the least bad side effect, other things include holding grudges, becoming reckless, using of other peoples life force without permission to continue using her power. She can use negative energy and shadows to use as a shield. The longer she continues to use it, the more she'll use ir, every negative emotion will continue to pent up until it all comes exploding out.

Likes: Kind people, kisses, any where dark, soft music, and that special someone.

Dislikes: Using her powers, bullies, peer pressure, loud music, and becoming destructive to the point she harms everyone around her.

Fears: Her powers, she absolutely is scared of using them and will try to get out of ever having to practice them, oh and she really dislikes heights.

Personality: Sanja is a very kind girl, and easily frightened by others as she one of the few of Noctrem that are absolutely scared to use there powers and its not because of not knowing how to use it, its because shes afraid she'll hurt everyone around her. So she's not the one to practice often, she's withdrawn to herself with little friends if any, because of the people who bully her for her refusal to abuse her power. No one to really talk to and if anything abhors Noctrem and its students, she has a special grudge against a student in particular who seems to have it all.

But when she begins to use her power, she changes from a kind, easily frightened girl, to one of the most powerful and reckless fighters of Nocterm, this great power which makes her one of the most vicious fighters of Necterm. Has also made her afraid of her own power, she's seen all her emotions come out all at once and she's seen the damage she could do to someone. It all has made her afraid of her own power and she needs, wants someone to help her.

History: Sanja always felt like the black sheep of the family with two sisters a an older brother, with her father extremely successful music producer, her mom an actor, her two sisters, one was a stylist, and the other was a porn star, tho that's not brought up much. Her brother was a successful estate agent, and Sanja, she was always the black sheep of the family, not old enough to have a successful career in anything yet and was still just in high school.

But it wasn't until she was thirteen that she learned about her powers, she had problems with bullying in school because she was a loner with very few friends. During the time, so a lot of her emotions became pent up over the time. But eventually it all came out, her powers exploded after they found out about her crush and then proceeded to tell that person about her. Needless to say, things got ugly, fast, she hurt a lot of people at that school, teachers, students, security, visitors, a lot of people got hurt.

After the incident, she was sent home, and after some work her parents managed to pay off everyone involved and kept things out of court, Nocterm caught word of the incident, and the dean was quick to send a letter of invitation out to her. She barely knew about the latter, and by time she found out was the first day of school, her parents signed her off without even telling her about it. She didn't even have a choice weather to go or not, and since she was still realing from the incident at her old school, she became absolutely afraid to use her power again, in fear of hurting more people like back at her old school.

Present Day: the bullying hasn't stopped, she's pushed around because she refuses to use her power and show what she can do. No one in the school really knows what she can do, only the dean and teachers know, and they been trying to draw out this power, and to them, she was an ace in the hole against Arcana Academy. Her friends problem hasn't really changed, and the bullying hasn't stopped at all, if things continue as is, Nocterm will be the next explosion site for her powers.

There you go. I needed to take a chance to make him a bit connected to doctor House-- er, the Principal.

Sexuality: male, bisexual (slightly more interested in women, though)
School: Noctrem

Power: I am a Puppet Master, the only one ever of my "kind" that I knows is alive. I can make any person do as I please, and have practically perfected my ability to do so. However, my power does nothing to the mind of the person I control (they don't want nor like doing what I make them do, mostly), and I have to say a word or make a move to get someone controlled. I'm working on making it a silent, motionless thing, but so far I can only say I succeeded twice, and for a short time period. Once I do get in control of someone, I can continue controlling their actions for as long as I see them, or for as long as I have something of theirs in my possession. My power controls the physical, but not only the outside - I could, if I really wished, stop a person's heart. In theory, that is, as I never really did so. As for other living creatures - I can, to a point, control an animal's movement. That is, for as long as we maintain eye contact, and for some reason I can't force anyone to maintain eye contact if they don't want it (not even humans). I never really tried controlling plants, though it certainly does sound interesting.

Likes: Clocks. I have tons of it - from wrist and pocket watches to the ones on the walls - and I love listening to their ticking sounds. I also like children, especially the small ones, as I remember myself from that time. I enjoy staring at fire and I love the heights (I climb the building's roofs and such when I have a chance).. I enjoy photography as well. One more, I like sweets. A lot.

Dislikes: People telling me what to do, that I just can't stand - I am the one who's in control. Also I dislike people who can't think of anything but materialistic possessions. I don't like religion of any kind, for I know how "helpful" it is when one needs help, nor I care about the money in any matter (I can actually get what I want in a different way). What else, I don't like being touched. I really really don't like being touched.

Fears: To tell the truth, I'm mostly afraid to be left alone again - yet still, I function the best when I'm not depending on anyone. I guess I just really need to know that there is someone I could rely on if I needed to. Take that person away from me, and you made yourself a mortal enemy. I also feel uncomfortable in open spaces, unless they're really high up. Don't make me walk over a field. You may end up hurt.

Personality: Well. I am mostly serious, I suppose, but I do like to tease. I despise authority. I am mostly calm, and come across as cold, yet that is only so because I know very well how to hide my emotions. I tend to be mean to people I don't like, but I will not (probably) get sadistic over someone who did me no harm.. There's only one person alive who saw my tears, and I'm not planning on letting that happen again. I believe in true love and friendships, and enjoy reading about all sorts of things, but I'm finding it hard to believe anything like that could exist in reality. One could say I sort of lost the faith in humanity in general. I obviously have some abandoning issues, coming from my past, and though I know very well how to be charming, I rarely let go of sarcasm and bitterness. I don't intend to change for anyone, though at the same time I'm pretty sure no one would really even want to bother trying to get me to love them. I function perfectly fine alone, and have my "fun" when I want it (not always the other person is able to do what they want, though, but it's never not consensual). I also have a thing for making things symmetrical - and I don't thing I need to mention that I'm a bit of a control freak.


History: I was born in a wealthy, loving family in my home city, to an University teacher and a banker's daughter. I always liked puppets of different kinds, ever since I first saw one my grandfather always carried around. I still have that one, as it's been with me through it all, and I take it whenever I go, in my pocket or such (not very big, with strings and looks pretty ragged by now).

When I was seven, my parents died in a car accident, drowning in the sea. Because of that, I feel like I hear their cries for help whenever I see large water surfaces. After that, I got moved to an orphanage, but didn't stay there long. That was the time when I learned about what I could do, but I had no idea how to control those powers. I tried to hide them, but it got known. By the time I turned twelve, other children and the staff were all afraid of me, as I can't say I was gentle when practicing my powers. I needed someone to do it on - so I took what was offered to me.
The orphanage burnt to the ground, one winter day as I got taken by a man who said to give me new family. I don't know if it was me who made someone plant that fire - I don't want to know.
I didn't end up in a family, but in a group of children and young people who had no where to go. I learned to not trust anyone and how to make everyone trust me when I wanted it. I wasn't loved there, but I was not alone either - and it worked for a while.

As I turned fifteen, I've been already been using random people as my objects, knowing how much I can do with my ability. The man who made me that person killed himself - again, perhaps I was responsible for it, I don't really want to know - and though they never found it out, I made sure that at least the younger children of the group get proper homes. Then I got a message once, and met the Principal of the Noctrem Academy, who convinced me to come with him. Ever since, I've been learning to develop my abilities and working on telling the truth a bit more often.

Anything else? I don't particularly enjoy being seen like one, but I am something close to a protege of the Principal. He's the only person I truly respect and trust, and whom I could take orders from. Also perhaps a bit of a fatherly figure, since I didn't really have much of those - but I'm not exactly what you'd call nice even around him.

Power: Philip's power is creating a forcefield. Insofar as he has experimented, the field has no physical limits. He must have full use of his hands to create it, so being tied up, etc. is bad news bears. The force field can only stop bodies, not weapons or any inanimate object. Personality: Philip is an extrovert. He loves big parties and having many friends. A bit of a daredevil, he loves freedom most of all, and relishes every chance to do his own thing. While he has never had much luck with women, Philip continues to pursue them cheerfully. Philip is brave and kind, if poor at sympathy. He is not afraid to lead, though he might not make the best leader. However, he is skittish with commitment, prefering to be his own man. He is often dispassionate about important subjects.
History: Philip grew up in Kircudbright, with one younger brother. His parents both worked in a dental clinic, so he grew up in a comfortable home. A bit of a late bloomer, he did not discover his power until he was 16. His brother, then 15, got a girl in his class pregnant. His family went through a big overturn and his parents separated because of the stress. Because of his brother, Philip received a lot of ridicule. One day, he was in an irritated mood, when a group of jocks walked towards him at school. Not at all interested in dealing with them, he wished that they wouldn't touch him. Suddenly, a wall popped up between them and the jocks smacked into it.

Confused and intrigued, Philip combed the Internet and found the two Academies. Driven by the influence of his parents, Philip chose to use his powers for good. He figured nobody need suffer any more terror than the world already supplied.

He convinced his parents separately that his leaving was necessary, then packed his bags and left for Arcana. He never looked back. It was an ultimate symbol of freedom for him, leaving home and not returning.

Home Town: Born in Italy to Argentinian parents, was brought to Oxford, England when she was nine. She speaks with a Spanish accent, though when she is angry she sounds Italian and she can do a flawless English accent.

Sexuality: Heterosexual, though she is accepting of everyone.


School: Noctrem, though she could be in any school.

Power: She can change her appearance at will to anyone, though it cna only be someone she's seen before. Depending on her emotions there can be small changes on her, but she can't control them. Everyday she looks a little different.

History: She was born to two professers, both men. She is only related to one of them, she doesn't know which, but she feels a strong connection to both of them. She grew up in Lucca, Italy. Her dads decided that they wanted to get out of Italy when she was nine, and around that time she started getting her powers.

At first it was just small things; one day her eyes would be green, and the next day they'd be purple or brown, and when her hair started changing colours overnight about when she was twelve, she started questioning what was going on with herself. One of her fathers, who was deeply superstitious, suspected she was magic.

About two years after her powers came in full force she recieved two letters, one from Arcana and one from Noctrem. She decided to go to Noctrem, and she was very happy there until it burned down. She doesn't know what to think about Arcana.
