I straighten my dress as I weave through my girls in the parlor, winking at a few who have especially rich- in money or information- men hanging onto their every word.
Humming, I glance in the mirror beside the door that I put there to know what I looked like before I go out and see a tired, normal woman. It's just easier to go about looking as though you have nothing to do with your life, as if you have no secrets.
Unable to resist the temptation, I pull a clip out of one of my pocket in my skirt which looks like trousers. The clip has tiny spades on it. No one would know, unless they really looked, but those who really look are normally the ones I want to know.
I strut out, calling the map to mind, and begin to make my way to the rebels' HQ of sorts. God, I hoped this was official. I'm not sure I could quite stand to go another month of inaction.
I slipped through shadows, forgetting the exact color my clothing appeared, but sure it blended in well enough. I was close, only a few blocks away, when a figure dropped in front of me. I looked up, shocked for a moment, and then I returned my gaze to the threatening figure in the middle of my path.
"Hey-" big boy. Is how I normally began most of my interactions as the Duchess, big time, very experienced harlot, but I caught myself just in time to remember that I was merely a nameless face, just trying to blend in on the street. "Wanna let a girl through, huh?" I asked with a crooked smile and met the red gaze.
Surprise and, though I hate to admit it, fear ran through me as I realized just who was standing in my way.
It was the Jabberwockey.
I couldn't let him know who I was.
Spoiler
Wasn't sure if the Duchess knew Jasper was a friend, so I decided she didn't.
