I stared out at the cold, snowy landscape dotted with pine trees and shivered. I wrapped my black jacket tighter around myself, and grinned ruefully. How different this place was from hot, noisy, traffic-filled Naples.
'to storm or fire, the world must fall'... hmm. I caught myself and chuckled. I always seemed to think about doom when I looked at Canada. I had heard of the second Great Prophecy soon after it was ordained by my old mentor, and often reflected upon it.
Speaking of my mentor, I decided to pay him a visit. Or rather, I decided that he should pay me a visit.
I glanced up as a bird cawed across the clear blue sky. Perfect.
I drew my sword, a gift from Tharnatos, and pointed at it.
The bird dropped to the ground, dead. One one hand, I thought, as I picked up the goose, my powers seemed more powerful here... probably because of the many great deaths that had occurred in this land recently.
I pointed at the ground with my sword, and it fell apart, forming a rough pit. Then I slit the bird from tail to head, my sword humming through it without the slightest resistance, and tossed it into the pit. Not a lot of blood -my master was old fashioned- but enough.
"Confucius" I intoned. "Rise. Taste again"
Mist swirled around the pit, and soon, it solidified into the form of a dumpy old Chinese man in robes.
"Apprentice" he greeted, voice like dry paper burning. "It has been a long while since we last spoke"
I nodded in respect.
"My old master... what does Tartarus say? What of the prophecy?" I asked. Confucius, while having achieved Elysium, was always informed of the goings-on in the underworld- he was Hades's adviser, after all. I was sure he could tell me something.
I was not dissapointed. Confucius was quick to reply "The five half-bloods approach, my apprentice. Make ready"

Kala Matin

I arrived at the Vancouver International Airport. During the flight I had been studying my English flashcards. My father had insisted I learn English, saying that it helps no matter where you go because everywhere you go there's at least one person who knows the language. However, here, it wasn't just a confused German tourist who had a low mastery of the language, everyone here were natives and I would have to improve.

"Hello. I am Kala Matin. I am attending school here." I muttered under my breath for the fifth time, hoping that my accent was disappearing. I said it again to make sure I had it down when a woman standing behind me tapped me on the shoulder. I turned and noticed that she was with two others who looked similar to her; elderly, gaunt, and all wearing unattractive knit sweaters.

"Hello sweetheart. You are studying here." She asked without a question mark, and gave me a smile that revealed her unruly teeth and dark black gums.

She scared me. Everything from the way she leered up at me and the wings that were breaking through her sweater in the back. Wings? I took another cursory glance and realised that before I had noticed anything, this woman, and her companions had transformed into three demon-like woman who hissed when they spoke in a language I didn't think I knew, but recognised all the same. It sounded like Greek, it was similar to the accent a guest professor used, but it was not quite the same.

My thoughts were broken when they lovingly began to pull apart their sweaters, which seemed to be made of one long piece of yarn and take out an ominous pair of scissors that were serrated and rusting. Before jutting them in my direction, one held it over the string, about to cut it. I ran off the plane without looking back, still hearing the whispering voices and menacing laughs of the trio.

I searched around the terminal for my rendezvous point. My father said people would meet me at the gate and would take me to the school. He also said that you can't trust everyone and that they must be able to prove that they work at the school. That was his old Indian mentality, but after what was on the plane, I valued it.

Welcome!

*********
I couldn't really get away from the monster. To my surprise people were looking at me like I was ruining their flight.well excuse me for valuing my life. I decidied to just keep on runing until the plane landed my plan would have worked if a flight attendent didn't stop me.
"Listen little girl this isn't a play ground please go back to your seat!" He said through gritted feather and had a fake smile.
"There's a monster after me!" I nearly cried. I didn't quite understand what he had told me. The passengers started glaring at me. The monster caught up with me.
"Your blood. It calls for me!"it hissed.
I yelled pointing at the thing and shouted" its coming"
There were some gasps as they looked at her.finally they understood. I was so wrong.they didn't understand at all
" how rude calling your grandmother a monster" I heard someone say I was at a loss for words. What was with their eyes?
Just then a strange wind began to blow that only afected the monster .she was pushed back until she hit her head and fell unconscious. I don't know what the others saw when I was told to take my seat like nothing happened.

We were landing and from there I would look for whoever paid for my ticket.

I was just falling to sleep when I heard a soft voice sing, "Come sing, sweetly sing. Come and sing so sweet with me. Come sing, sweetly sing. Deep down in the sea." and repeat until I fell into a trance. In this trance I got out of my seat and started to walk to the emergency door. "Maria! Maria! Stop and WAKE UP! Remember the spell!" another voice said, waking me up.
"Huh? What the fuck am I doing out of my seat?" I said.
"I was just about to ask you the same question." said the flight attendant.
"Sorry miss. I must have been sleep walking." I said, in a mock-guilty voice.
"That's fine, so long as it doesn't happen again, daughter of Hecate." she said, looking at me wierd. "We don't want anything to happen to you. Now at least try to ignore the call of the Sirens and Merpeople as we fly over the sea, please."
"Oh-kay, I will try." I said, this time it was me looking at her wierdly as I walked back to my seat and sat down.

The Irport was like nothing I had ever seen. I looked around as if I knew how that person looked like. That person was the one who bought me the plain ticket and set up everything for me.. I was starting to get scared when a whole hour had gone by .

Kala Matin~ Daughter of Athena

I stumbled out into the thick stream of people, looking in all directions and hoping to to someone or something familiar.

"Hello Miss. Are you looking for someone?" A tall person in a dark coat asked me as I passed.

"Yes. I am Kala Matin, I am going to study here in Canada. I am looking for someone representing an academy?" I asked politely hoping that he would help me.

"Ah, yes I do. Follow me." His voice reflected a smile, but a cold one that made me nervous.

Do not trust him.

I heard a voice say this and I turned to look behind me but there was no one there.

Run. Do not follow him. Leave before it's too late and look for the others.

I glanced at the man who was leading me, like a lamb for slaughter. I waited until the natural wave of people separated us and I ran in the opposite direction, without looking back. I did not know why I listened to the voice, but it seemed to be the only viable option.

He knows you have run. Quickly find the others before he finds you.

The others? I ran past terminal after terminal, slamming into people and tripping over newsstands. My white collared shirt and plaid skirt were splattered with coffee as I ran headfirst into a Japanese businessman who yelled at me, spurring me on further and further.

Do not give up. You are the Daughter of Athena. You are strong.

Daughter of Athena? I was tossed by the crowd and fell to my knees. I had studied malakhra, my father insisted on teaching it to me though it was generally a sport reserved for boys, and I knew basic self-preservation skills. I rolled out of the way of feet and landed against a wall. I found that I had stopped right by a girl clutching a suitcase and looking as confused as I was.

She looked down at me, shocked.

"I am so sorry." I apologised, standing up looking down. When I glanced up though, she didn't look Canadian. In fact, she looked as if she was of African descent, and she was carrying a tag on her luggage that implied that she was heading for the same academy I was.

"Are you, by chance, an Academy attendee?" I asked her hopefully, praying that she was not yet another strange and dangerous creature that I had been seeing all afternoon.

I walked off the plane and then saw another kid who seemed to be like me. She looked scared. I walked up to her.
"Hi! I'm Maria. What's your name." I asked.
"Why do you want to know." She retorted.
"Just trying to be nice." I replied, upset.

I guess I must have fallen asleep. The flight attendant was shaking my arm.

"Get off the plane!" She said.

I gather my stuff and walk off of the plane.

When I get into the airport, a chill runs down my spine. I wonder why, because it isn't terrably cold in here.

A girl walks up to me.
"Hi, my name is Maria. What's your name."

"Why do you want to know?" I asked because my mom told me not to trust anyone.

"I was just trying to be nice!" She walked away with a hurt expression on her face.

"It's Robin!" I shout. I don't think she heard me though.

I walk outside and find a taxi. I open the door.
~~flashback~~
"Robin, go!" My mother shouts as she opens the taxI door. "You have to go before your stepdad finds you! He will take you away!"
I stand on the curb in front of our apartment building.
"Robin!! Get in the taxi, NOW!!!"
~~end of flashback~~

I was surprised at the girl who bumped into me. She asked me something in english,
My engilish wasn't so good. It took me some time to process what she had said. I was really happy because I wasnt alone it was almost as if luck was on my side. I really wished that that was the case.

Robin

Quickly I turned to see who shouted at me. It was the girl I was rude to earlier. I guess she had heard me after all. I glance back at the taxi. The taxi driver was taking her sun glasses and turban off.

"LOOK AWAY!!" Maria shouts at me. I spin to look at her. An elderly woman, who turned to see that the commotion was suddenly turned to stone.

What the... I think. I stare at the reflection of the glass airport walls. The taxi driver's hair was moving... Wait! It wan't just moving.... It was Alive! Her hair was made of snakes like the Greek Myth about Medusa I learned in 5th grade...

That was a myth...Right?
