Storm
After our failed attempts at hunting, we lay in the sweet-smelling grass and I closed my eyes. Immediately the awful moment from this morning came reeling back and I shut my eyes tight and pinched the skin on my fingers to keep from crying.
I lay down by myself the group away from me, I had already marked myself as a loser, an outsider. Rayah was too busy with Alex to notice, which was fine by me, she needed to have some time with that boy. Her sunny blonde hair snaked through the grass as she talked feverishly to him. He listened with a content look on his face. Would that be me and Peter if he actually had feelings for me, feelings for girls?
As if he had read the very contents of my mind, Peter himself trampled into our little grassy nap. His face was hidden by a very fat animal but I could have sworn he looked angry. But that was only a moment, and he was happy, cheerful, gloating. His eyes wandered over the crowd, over me and he smiled like nothing ever happened. That stung more than anything. If he avoided me, at least I would know that our conversation affected him too. This made me feel unreasonably bitter and cruel. I looked away.
"We'll have ham tonight! Barbecue anyone?" His call rang to the treetops in triumph and all of the Never Kids immediately looked up to his god-like figure and screamed in delight. "All right then! We'll take this back! Follow me" A little parade of worshippers followed him like a ton of puppies following their ma. I strayed behind, kicking rocks in the back. I resolved that I'd have to get over him and have fun or go home.
