Ms. King's companion was a large gryphon named Halieo. Once noble children grew up, they wanted to leave their parents house to face the world. Some parents agreed to this; but rarely did these sons and daughters of noble birth have to face it alone. So it was that Isabella was facing it with Halieo. Gryphons were particularly popular companions for young ladies because, in addition to being big and scary, they were loyal and noble.

Companions like Halieo were sometimes confused with bodyguards. Bodyguards are, in essence, a person that stands between you and those that might harm you. But they wouldn't necessarily keep track of your appointments, help you start/run a business, help you find a date for a ball, or otherwise be your confidant. Companions could do all that and more.

So when Ms. Isadora King took her seat in the Green Mare Tavern at 8:00 AM, she was accompanied by Halieo. And while she ultimately made decisions about who would come along, each applicant would be closely screened by Halieo.

"Halieo, what is the first application?" Ms. King asked. Halieo looked down to see the first application.

Spoiler
Please go ahead and post your application (aka profile) and then write the interview where your character gets hired. If you can't think of a good reason why; then you probably need to use a different character.

Bryan | Green Mare Tavern

Bryan Brawn sat down in front of his interviewers and tried to look respectable. He avoided eye-contact with the Gryphon and, instead, found himself staring at Ms. Isadora King. Honestly, with a name like that she sounded like royalty.

"Good morning, Mister...?"

"Mr. Brawn," supplied Bryan. "But they call me Big Bryan in the trade."

"I see," said the Gryphon, elongating the "s" into a menacing hiss. "And did you complete this application form yourself, Mr Brawn?"

"Ah, well," said Bryan as he wondered what gave him away. "I did have a bit of help."

Halieo made a clicking noise in his beak. "Clearly not enough: you misspelt your signature."

"It is quite a long word, though," Bryan said with a shrug. Fortunately Ms. King came to his rescue.

"Tell us about your pain threshold, Bryan," she said gently. Halieo began to ruffle his feathers but was silenced by a glance from Ms. King.

"Well I withstand lots of tiny needle pricks every day," Bryan began but Ms. King cut him off.

"Splendid. When can you start?"

Bryan blinked. "Err, today."

"Excellent," she said, suppressing Halieo's protestations with another sidelong glance. "Ready your gear and meet us here this evening. Halieo -- who's next on the list?"

Job Application

Full Name: Renn Ariyal

Age: 19 (nearly 20)

Species: Elf (actually he's a dragon who can shapeshift but that's an aside to the other writers, if you accuse him of not being an elf he'll deny it vehemently.)

Gender: Male

Weapons: Twin Swords, throwing knives

Skills: Independent Thinking, Stealth, Reconnaiscance, Thieving, Trap Detection, and Drinking

Magic (if any): Elemental magic, primarily Fire/Lightning (It's actually his breath weapon but in his "human" form he emits it from his hands.)

Previous Experience: Self-proclaimed Treasure Hunter (other people call him a thief.)

Are you currently wanted for any crime? (Yes or No): In which country?

If yes, what was the nature of the crime? (Please explain.): As stated above I am a treasure hunter, however I don't particularly care if my aquisitions already have owners. I'm wanted by several high ranking noble houses and recently broke into the King's treasure vault just to say I could.

Picture (if any): http://media.photobucket.com/image/elf% ... b.jpg?o=44

(This is his True form, http://media.photobucket.com/image/blue ... .jpg?o=185 )

Please list all health problems or curses that you have had had in the last five years, (if any): Errr... Nothing that did any lasting harm. I am also under a curse known as the maloncuer, although I still haven't managed to find the details I know from the words that it's a love curse. I also suffer from a bad case of wanderlust but I'm pretty sure that's just a character flaw.

What level of education have you received?
A: The Orphan School of Tough Learning (straight A's)

In the event that you are killed during this mission; who, if anyone, would you leave your share to?
A: Just stick it in my hoard, some other greedy treasure hunter will claim it eventually.

This job is extremely hazardous and can result in severe injury or death. In the event that you are injured. Further, no payment is given until after the successful completion of the mission, which is not guaranteed. Please sign if you understand this:

Renn | Green Mare Tavern

"Halieo -- who's next on the list?" The woman, was she expedition leader or just an interviewer, asked her companion.

The griffin simply shook his head mournfully and answered her. "The next name is just an initial, an R. I don't have any idea how it got there."

Renn slipped down from where he crouched on the roof, quietly listening to the first interview. "That would be me." He spoke from behind them as he landed in a crouch on the balcony. The young man moved with the lithe grace of a predator.

The pair whirled around as he strode through the open door, and placed his application on the desk. Renn turned the chair around and straddled it, his arms resting on the back. He smiled watching his prospective boss with an unblinking blue stare as she studied his unconventional application.

Out of the corner of his eye Renn noticed the griffin's feathers stand on end as he came too attention. Even though Renn had written Elf on the application the griffin could tell he was some sort of magical beast, but he wasn't sure what.

"Well..." The girl, Isadora, murmured as she passed the paper over to her companion. "You've certainly been honest with me Mr. Ariyal."

"Call me Renn." He said, flashing a charming lopsided grin. "And in my current situation I'm finding honesty to be the better part of valour, not discretion."

Isadora reached out and laid a gentle hand on her ruffled griffin. "So let me get this straight. You recently broke into the King's treasury. And now that he's hot to get his hands on you you're taking the first opportunity to leave town... by hiring on with the group going to res... I mean escort his daughter?

Renn simply smiled and nodded. "Yep." The answer continued in his mind. "Dragon logic, gotta love it."

"All right." She continued briskly. "Provided you don't cause too much trouble, you're hired. Be back here this evening ready to ride."

Smirking Renn stood and circled around the desk, leaving the way he had entered. "I'll behave Isadora, provided I get first pick of the dragon's hoard." He told her. As he passed Halieo Renn snapped his teeth playfully at the griffin. As he climbed back onto the roof he found himself wondering whether his mother had been telling the truth when she said they tasted like chicken.

Spoiler
Sorry for messing up the flow of the story initially. I recently edited the post to fix it by adding narrative before and after my application. Also, sorry that this post is a bit long!

P.S. Wow, I edited this post a bunch.

After watching Renn go, Ms. King asked Halieo for the next name on the list. "An 'Elowyn Chorus.' Peculiar name," said Halieo. Suddenly a hand shot up at a table in the corner. "Hey! Me! That's my peculiar name," shouted a young woman. She stood up and rushed to Ms. King's table, bumping into a few people on the way. Before sitting down, she took time to glare cautiously at Halieo. The griffon instinctively stared back at the girl.
"You better not try anything," said Elowyn. "I have a reputation for killing your kind!" said Elowyn.

Ms. King raised an eyebrow at the young woman. She had certainly just demonstrated rudeness, but she also stared right into the eyes of a griffin and practically threatened its life. Ms. King exchanged glances with Halieo, who nodded to approve hearing more from Elowyn, and then looked back at the her - but before she could ask her to take a seat, Elowyn hopped onto the bar stool and plopped her arms onto the table.
"So did you look at my application?" Elowyn asked enthusiastically. "I think you'll like it."
Halieo plucked the form from a stack and placed it in front of Ms. King. They both began to read it.

--- --- ---

Job Application

Full Name: Elowyn E. Chorus

Age: 18

Species: I'm a half-Elf. Got a problem with that?

Gender: I am a lovely young woman.

Weapons: I use a hammer. A huge hammer. As big as a house mountain! On top of that, if the circumstances come about, my womanly charms are absolutely deadly. If you don't consider that a weapon, you've obviously never met a charming young woman before.

Skills: First of all I, as previously stated, use a hammer roughly as big as a house mountain. And I use it well. I can tear down a house in no time, just with a hammer. Right after I lift it. You read that right, I am so strong, I can lift a house. If there happens to be a house in our way, you bet I can help, either by moving it, or smashing it. (Assuming the door and windows have been boarded up)
Finally, I am skilled in the art of thievery. And all that goes with it, too. I may be tough, but I am also cunning. Need an example? I grew up on the streets, and yet I always had plenty of gold. Do the math.

Magic (if any): Just the magic of my company. I'll warn you in advance: don't fall in love with me.

Previous Experience: I've slain a number of creatures in my time. When I was twelve, I accidentally killed a Griffon. A Griffon! I was hailed all through out my city for it. Of course, that Griffon belonged to a very, very rich man, so I had to take a vacation in the next city over for a while. Anyway, besides my encounter with that Griffon, I also got drafted into joined the Midland Crusaders when I was fifteen. It was then that I discovered the art of smashing things. That was also the time I discovered that renegades attempting to overthrow an entire country are not ones to forgive people who accidentally reveal their operation to the authorities.
Finally, when I was sixteen to last year, I had a job in construction, in which I smashed things.

Are you currently wanted for any crime? (Yes or No): No comment.

If yes, what was the nature of the crime? (Please explain.): No comment!

Portrait: Are you kidding? I don't have spare pictures to just give away to all my potential bosses. However, I prepared a drawing of myself for you. http://i637.photobucket.com/albums/uu91 ... rtrait.png
I'm even prettier in person.

Please list all health problems or curses that you have had had in the last five years, (if any): Well that's a bit personal, don't you think? However I will answer. Two years ago, I was cursed by a Shaman. Essentially, the curse keeps me from using magic until it is broken. However, I don't use magic anyway (magic is for the weak!) and thus the curse means nothing. Also, when I was six, Milly Forefire put a curse on me to never get a boyfriend, but I don't think she can really cast curses. However, I have never had a boyfriend, so it would make sense I guess. I mean, what other reason could there be for a beautiful woman such as I to be available?

What level of education have you received?
A:
There was a scholar named Devin Merceldo from my birth city who would teach little kids. I was one of his students until I was twelve, since I had to leave the city and all. He taught me very well, apparently. I'd say my education is one or two levels below "perfect and amazing." I also fell in love with Devin when I was eleven, and caused an unfortunate misunderstanding essentially destroying his educational career in Ardrian before it even took off, but that's another story.

In the event that you are killed during this mission; who, if anyone, would you leave your share to?
A:
Devin Merceldo of Ardrian. Also, tell him I said "I'm sorry." Not that I'm going to die or anything!

This job is extremely hazardous and can result in severe injury or death. In the event that you are injured. Further, no payment is given until after the successful completion of the mission, which is not guaranteed. Please sign if you understand this:
Me? Get injured? Ha! I'm practically invincible. But I get it, you want to be all "official" and such. So here.
Image

P.S. I had a librarian write my signature for me. It's not because my signature is ugly, because it's not! It's for security reasons.

--- --- ---

"...Wow," sighed Ms. King. Elowyn, who had been waiting impatiently for them to finish, was resting her chin in her palms. "It's very wordy, I'll give it that," said Halieo.
"And no stranger to hyperbole," added Ms. King. Elowyn sat up and crossed her arms. "Oh yeah? Name one thing I was too excited about," she said, confident in their inability to think of even one example. Ms. King rolled her eyes, and Halieo shook his head in disapproval. "So much for your 'near perfect and amazing' education," said Halieo. Elowyn was confused.

Ms. King picked up the application and flipped it around so that it faced Elowyn, and pointed to the 'weapon' section. "Listen, 'Chorus.' How can we believe anything you say in this application when you clearly lie about having a hammer the size of a house? And a mountain?"
Elowyn gestured for the two to wait as she stood up and rushed back to her table, under which she retrieved a war hammer. She brought it back to Ms. King's table and held it up for them. "There," Elowyn smugly announced.

"That's just your average warhammer," argued Halieo.

"Oh really?" replied Elowyn.

"Of course. It's hardly the size of a house, nor a mountain."

"But you're working off of assumptions. You see, the house and mountain I compared my hammer to were quite small - about the size of your average warhammer."

After a moment, Halieo grinned. "Very well then," he said.

"You also say you can lift a house," said Ms. King.

"Again, tiny house," Elowyn replied.

"So does that mean you can't 'smash' a house that is normal size? And am I to assume that you can only steal from people who are blind and deaf? Because your strength and your thievery were the only two redeeming aspects of your application."

Elowyn again gestured for the two to wait. She jumped out of her seat and pushed a table towards Ms. Kings', sending the man who was using said table into the floor.
"What are you doing?" asked Halieo.
Elowyn swiped her hammer off of the table and stepped to the side of the second table, so that her future employers had a good view. "Watch closely," said Elowyn. She raised her hammer overhead, and crashed it down on the table, which proceeded to shatter into a hundred different pieces. The destruction of the table was loud, catching the attention of those in the tavern who weren't too drunk to pay any mind to it, and it was also unnatural.

Elowyn looked around to all who were staring at her. "Don't worry, we're with the government. Official business over here," she hollered.
"What's wrong with you?" said Halieo, who, just as Ms. King, would have preferred to do without the attention. Elowyn sat back down and placed her hammer on her lap. "What did ya think?" she asked.
Ms. King looked again at her application. "Ms. Chorus, on your application you stated that you don't use magic, and on top of that, you claim a Shaman cursed you, preventing you from using magic."

"That's correct," said Elowyn.

"Then how do you explain being able to break that table so violently, so effortlessly?"

"My strength, of course."

"Let's be honest, Ms. Chorus. You have a very average build. I'm surprised you can swing that hammer, let alone destroy anything with it."

Halieo nodded. "Clearly the hammer is enchanted," he said.

Elowyn looked about nervously, and began fidgeting with her fingers. "Well, there may be a bit of a catch to my strength," she admitted.
Suddenly, a guard grabbed Elowyn by the arm. "Official business, huh?" he teased as he pulled her from her seat. Elowyn's hammer fell, and she caught it with her foot.
"Hey! Stand down, soldier!" she ordered while trying to escape his grip.
"I'm sorry miss, and... griffin. This girl's got a habit of disrupting the peace, and curiously frequently by smashing tables in public places. I'll get her out of your hair."
Elowyn flung her foot up, sending her hammer a few tables over. Her intent was to catch the hammer in her other hand, but her aim was less than impressive. "P-Plan B!" she yelled. "Take the hammer to my house!"
The guard sighed as he watched a young boy jump out from beneath a table, retrieve Elowyn's hammer, and scurry out of the tavern.

After a moment the guard apologized again for Elowyn's behavior and began dragging her towards the door. "Don't leave without me! I'll escape and I'll meet up with you right after, I promise!" she screamed.

After a few moments of silence, Ms. King looked to Halieo. "So what do you think?"

"I think she's got an interesting card up her sleeve, as well as quite a... personality."

"What about her supposed expertise in stealth and security?"

"Well, she technically wasn't lying about being able to smash a house."

Ms. King nodded. "If she breaks free of their custody in time, we'll consider allowing her to come along. Now, who's next on the list?"

Full Name: Basil. That's it, I'm afraid.

Age: 78, but I suppose I'd be about twenty in human years.

Species: Elf, but my Mom was part tree Nymph... So, it's complicated?

Gender: Female.

Weapons: Small, simple dagger. Still deadly, though. Sometimes I spike the end with poison, but it's not much my style. I've also been known to use to sticks of various nature- you wouldn't be laughing if I used one on you.

Skills: I've trained under a dagger master, and I've been known to be quiete clever. I'm smart for being trained in the forest my whole life, but know my way around the woods and minor in Nature magic. I can heal with said Nature magic. I'm not a master on it, but probably better than most.

Magic (if any): Simple healing magic my mother taught me, and a bit of earth magic as well. I can't do a lot with either, so there won't be bringing any one back from the dead or bending elements to my will- but there's enough to remark on.

Previous Experience: Job or fighting? I killed a basilisk that wandered into my villiage once and tried to eat a few kids. With daggers. In job terbs, I guess you could gall me an apprentice healer- not something i want to bbe for the rest of my life, thank you very much.

Are you currently wanted for any crime? (Yes or No): No...

If yes, what was the nature of the crime? (Please explain.): I did I little pickpocketing as a child- nothing anybody cares about, kay?

Picture (if any): Psh, like a wood elf would have one. Erm, I don't think so.

Please list all health problems or curses that you have had had in the last five years, (if any): ...Broke my arm two years ago...

What level of education have you received?
A: Three levels of school required by my Elven Clan, six months under the dagger master L.A.Karls, and current apprenticeship under my mother- a town healer.

In the event that you are killed during this mission; who, if anyone, would you leave your share to?
A: My older sister, Lyla Smith. She's married to a human.

Basil I Green Mare Tavern
When Basil walked into the Green Mare Tavern was the Griffon. Until that point, she actually thought she could get away with a view white lies- with the Griffon there, that would be virtually impossible. basil never was a good lier.

When the woman she pressumed was Ms. Isadora King called her name, she immediatly went and sat quietly in the chair. She brushed back a loose strand of hair, hoping that Ms. King caught a glance of her ears- with the Griffon there, and her chances already low- every honest attribute would be an addition.

The woman looked up at her from the application. "Miss Basil?" Basil nodded. "I see that you have no last name. May I ask why?"

"... I'm the child of wood elves- the very deep in the forest kind. They never had a last name, didn't need one. Sometimes I make one up. I will now, if it makes you more comfortable."

Basil could tell she was rambling, and quickly snapped her jaw shut before she could blurt out some of her usual last name choices. 'Tree' and 'Woods' weren't exactly impressive material.

"No, no, it's okay." The griffon made a cawking noise, but not a bad one. Basil figured she'd passed the first test. The Griffon looked over his mistresses shoulder at the next question. "Your seventy-eight?" Ms. King sounded considerably suprised.

"Um..." Basil rubbed the back of her head. "My species of elf ages a bit slow- not to mention, there's a little Nymph blood in there- they live forever. Well, not literally."

The Griffon- whose name Basil still didn't know- seemed to laugh. Basil guessed lightly that it was the fact she beat people up with sticks. She'd long revolved to stop lying- what she fought with was no different. Besides, sticks could be very useful. You never knew the damage they could cause until you got one to the back of the head. Sometimes, she'd rather fight with a stick than a dagger.

Ms.King did a lot of nodding and murmering. Basil presummed that she was after a lot of crazy characters, so she didn't come off as much. Well, yet. The Griffon kept his eyes trained on her, like she might jump up and stab someone at any point.

Must've been some characters.

"Why are you intrested in this position?" Ms. Isadora King was asking.

Basil tried to shrug uninterested-like. This would be her first lie- well, not a lie, but stretching the truth. "I just want an adventure- it's not very interesting in the woods."

The Griffon snorted, as if he suspected there was something behind the story, but not enough to be worried about. Isadora King nodded.

"You can start anytime?"

"Right now, if you need me."

"You've got horses, supplies?"

"... Have a horse. I can get everything else."

Ms. King- the irony of the name was not lost on me- tilted her head to the side, as if this was the first side of me that she considered even slightly interesting. Which was probably good.

"I'll see you soon then, Miss Basil."

I couldn't keep the smile from my face.

Aryn Dawn | Green Mare Tavern

Job Application

Full Name: Aryn Dawn

Age: 21

Species: Human (best guess)

Gender: What's it to you? (Female, and quite lovely for the benefit of other writers)

Weapons: Daggers. I prefer a sword of my own design, but I haven't had the time to sit down and make myself own after that idiot Kilhein - just a dragon I used to run with, no one of consequence - melted it to a pool of steel.

Skills: Close quarter combat, long range killing, petty thievery, and accounting.

Magic (if any): None

Previous Experience: Paid Assassin Flower Shop Owner

Are you currently wanted for any crime? (Yes or No): Yes

If yes, what was the nature of the crime? (Please explain.): I'm not permitted to share any such details

Portrait (if any): Just look at me; that should be portrait enough for you.

Please list all health problems or curses that you have had had in the last five years, (if any): That insolent Kilhein shouted some curse after me when I left him bound and dropped in a ditch in his human form after he burned up my sword and sufficiently screwed over my career prospects. I had River here look it up in an old book at the library for me and it's supposed to start doing all sorts of mad stuff to me when I turn twenty two but I never believed Kilhein to be particularly magical so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

What level of education have you received?
What education do you need to be an assassin own a flower shop? Let's be sensible about this.

In the event that you are killed during this mission; who, if anyone, would you leave your share to?
River, here. He may just look like a fox, but he's smarter than I could ever claim to be.

This job is extremely hazardous and can result in severe injury or death. In the event that you are injured. Further, no payment is given until after the successful completion of the mission, which is not guaranteed. Please sign if you understand this:

Ms. King glanced up at Aryn from the paper she held in her hands, an eyebrow raised. "You didn't sign your name," she said plainly.

Aryn nodded her cloaked, concealed head. The red fox sitting in her lap cleared his throat and spoke, "Aryn has never benefitted from the environment that would have taught reading and writing skills. I handle those areas."

"Can Aryn speak for him-her-hisself?" Ms. King inquired, eying the duo across from her suspiciously. "Or has he-she not benefitted from the environment that would have taught speaking skills as well?"

"Aryn, you see, has been plagued with a curse since birth that has caused him to become mute," River explained. "Being a fox with particularly magical qualities, I have a connection with Aryn's mind that allows me to speak his thoughts for him."

"So Arynn is male, then?" Ms. King asked, glancing back down at the application that still lay on the table in front of her. "Would you not just indicate that on the application?"

"Do you believe this figure I'm sitting on to belong to a man?" River asked, cocking his little fox head to the side. "Certainly this petite body could not be that of a man's."

Ms. King sighed. "So she is female?"

"What self respecting female would spend ten years of her life at the side of a dragon like Kilhein?" River asked, cocking his head to the other side now. "That's none, I'll tell you. Kilhein's a dirty fool that deserves none such beautiful company."

Ms. King leaned forward across the table, eying Aryn and River closely. The gryphon at her side mimicked the action, turning his big head slightly to the side. "Then what is Aryn?"

"Human, of course," River said. "Gender should be of no consequence for this position. Aryn possesses astounding skills that should benefit anyone on any sort of journey."

"Very well, then," Ms. King said, sitting back in her chair again. "Return here this evening, ready to embark.

Aryn rose from the table after River had jumped from her lap to her shoulders. She bowed respectfully and left the tavern. The pair went quietly down the road until they reached a small patch of trees where they could move off the road and out of sight.

"You could have made me sound a bit smarter," Aryn said, pulling her hood back to reveal a mass of dark brown hair that waved over her shoulders. "And yourself a bit less ridiculous."

"What do you mean by that?" River asked, jumping from her shoulders to the ground and curling into a tight ball so as to take a nap.

"Being a fox with particularly magical qualities," she mocked, slumping back against a tree and sliding to the ground. "All your magical qualities came from Kilhein, and even so they aren't very impressive."

River rolled his eyes and rested his head over his paws. "You ought to rest some if you're serious about going on this journey."
