Chapter 5: May Traverse
Viewpoint: Veda
It was an odd feeling, walking behind him. His speed was hard to keep up with as if he was in a hurry to find someone. Sure, we were trying to find these people but as far as I knew he didn't have a strong relationship with any of them. It was wearing on my mind and it slipped out.
"Can we slow down? Why are you in such a hurry?" I said, probably a little more bratty then necessary.
"Look up." He said continuing his pace toward the side door of the school. Stopping, I looked toward the sky. I hadn't noticed before but it was dark. Not like your average storm dark but almost pitch black. The cloud coming over the school looked sinister and forced my feet to move a little faster then before.
"Wait for me" I said nervously. We got to the side door and Lucas opened it quietly, hoping that no teachers were in the hallway. He peering inside then gently opened the door all the way motioning me inside.
The school gave off an unusual eerie feeling. I wrapped my bare arms around my body as if it were cold, my purple tank top scrunching beneath them. Lucas walked toward the steps at the end of the hall, we bent down as we passed by the cafeteria door.
It was strange sneaking around, as if we had done something wrong or were going too. Not that I wasn't used to that. I was starting to get worried about Seth, I really hoped we would find him.
"Hey" I whispered to Lucas.
"Yea, what is it?" He said still not looking back at me.
"We should check the third floor. That's where his last class was." He nodded in agreement and we made our way to the end of the hall and up the stairs. Thunder crackled in the sky and the lights flickered again.
"We should hurry." He said, again not looking toward me.
"Okay, really." We got to the top of the stairs and I raised my voice.
"Shhh, not so loud." He turned around and put his finger over his mouth.
"Now you decide to look at me then?" I lowered my voice again.
"What are you talking about?" He said, turning away again.
"Ugh, seriously? You've been avoiding me ever since you-know-what went down. Look, I am sorry your girlfriend dumped you, I'm sorry about everything that happened that night."
"I haven't been avoiding you." He kept his back turned. "You just didn't notice when I was looking." He said innocently.
"What are you talking about." I asked as he made his way to the next floor.
"I'm not sorry about what happened at the party, so hearing that you are is....well." He reached the third floor and turned around to face me.
"I was sorry cause I thought you hated what happened. That you were angry at me. That I went too fast when we barley knew each other." I confessed.
"Well, I'm not sorry." Lucas turned around and walked to the left toward the classrooms. "What class?"
"Room 307."
We walked down the hall and made another left and at the end was room 307. Lucas opened the door and went inside. The English classroom was a mess. Textbooks, jackets, pencils, and other things were scattered across all the desk. If I didn't know better it would look like all the kids had just disappeared.
Thunder rolled through again, this time even more fierce then the last. I could feel the school vibrate which caused my body to start shaking as well.
"I don't think anyone is here." Lucas said monotone and sounding slightly disappointed.
"We should head to one of the other places, see if they found them." I suggested.
"Yea, good idea." Again, Lucas lead the way. As we were about to turn the corner and head for the stairs thunder boomed again but this time it had a friend, lighting. The building rocked as the school was hit with a burst of lighting. It rattled and caused Lucas and I to fall to the ground. We stood up and I ran over to him, somehow thinking he could protect me from it.
Behind us a strange sound started too come from classroom 308, the room across the hall from 307(in case you didn't know). I hid behind Lucas who didn't make any attempt to move toward it, smart. The sound grew louder until, without any possible way of expecting it, the wall exploded into pieces sending us to the ground again.
A few seconds after the blast we stood up as the smoke started to clear. Standing, if you want to call it that, were two large black wolves. These things were giant, probably bigger then mountain lions. Their eyes glowed a dark blue and they didn't look happy. Their growls paralyzed me as I stood completely still in fear of an attack.
"Veda." Lucas said quietly.
"Ye-yes?" I replied.
"We need to go." He took a step back which caused the wolves to snarl and gnash their teeth. "Now!" He said motioning me down the hall. As expected the black wolves started their chase, without looking back we ran as fast as our legs would carry us. This is when track came in handy.
Slightly ahead of Lucas we came to the halfway point to the stairs and a pair of doors were in front of us. These doors were always left open and only closed after hours or in case of an emergency and we intended to use them. As we passed through the doors we both stopped, spun around, and slammed the doors shut. We leaned against them as if our body weight could stop the monsters chasing us.
The slam of the wolves against the door almost caused them to come open but, oddly enough, thanks to our leaning against them they were cut short. You could hear as they use their claws to scrap against the door.
"It won't be long till they get through, we have to run again." Lucas said looking at me, showing more bravery then i would have pegged him for. "One, two, three!" On three we pushed off the doors and ran as fast as we could toward the stairs. We didn't make it.
The wolves broke through the doors as soon as we pushed off and they were much faster then us. They jumped along the walls and with amazing speed ran on the lockers and past us and jumped in front of our path. We slammed on the breaks and I almost fell forward but Lucas's hand protected me from a fall.
They wanted to play a little more so they continued to snarl and growl at us as we stood in fear.
"Now what." I asked without moving a muscle.
"I...don't know." Lucas responded.
The wolf on the right, the one in front of me, looked at me intensely then started a charge straight for me. I thought it was the end and I had no more cards to play, I closed my eyes, expecting the worse. After a few seconds, and no pain, I opened my eyes again to see why I wasn't dead yet.
The wolves snout was inches from my face, his mouth opened wide and ready to bite. Only he hadn't. I couldn't imagine why. My eyes meet his and his eyes showed the same as mine, confusion, for whatever reason he had stopped, it looked like it wasn't his choice either. I turned my gaze to Lucas who looked even more confused.
"Wha-what happened?" I asked Lucas, barley able to speak.
"He just...stopped."
He started to back away from me slowly and I could tell by the way he looked at me that he didn't want too, as if someone else was in control. I felt it, like second nature, like an extension of my own body, the wolf was being controlled, by me. As I realized this, his body felt as if it were mine. I backed him farther away and then in a circle, just to be sure.
There was no way to explain but what happening but I was going to have to try,
"Lucas, I can- I am moving him."
"What are you talking about? You are what?"
"I can feel it, I am controlling every move he makes." I probably sounded crazy, then again two giant wolves just blew through a wall started attacking us a moment ago so it might not have been as far fetched as I imagined.
"I have no idea what is going on but just keep doing what you are doing," Lucas said encouraging me, then the other wolf turned is attention toward the one I was controlling. "Make it attack the other one or something! Take control of both of them." He suggested.
"I-I can't take control of both, I don't even know how i got the first one!" I argued back. The second wolf raised its claw and slashed the wolf under my control and he fell to the ground. He walked over to him and started chewing on his body, which made the most disgusting sounds. I almost threw up right there.
"This is not good. Get the other one." Lucas asked.
"I told you, I don't know how I did that in the first place!" I yelled back. The wolf brought his attention back to us, but focused on Lucas. Blood dripping from his mouth he ran at Lucas and tackled him to the ground. The blood of his comrade falling onto Lucas's face I could only stand and watch, trying to somehow active whatever I had just done again.
The monster raised his claw into the air in order to finish off his prey. His attack fell short, in as quick as I blinked the wolf was thrown against the locker so hard it completely destroyed them. After a few seconds the body fell to the ground, a pool of blood draining from it's corpse.
"I think i just did that." Lucas said, still on his back.
"I'm sorry, what the he'll is going on here!" I screamed falling to a sitting position.
"I don't know. I just don't...can this even be?" Lucas didn't finish his sentence, instead he sat on the floor as the blood eventually made contact with his shirt, which made him jump up. He looked over at me and his eyes were filled with so much fear. "We need to go." He said, he walked over to me and put his hand out.
I grabbed his hand and stood to my feet and looked around the hallway.
"I can't explain any of this, I just don't know what to say or do." Lucas said after a minute of silence.
"Let's just go, find someone else, find out what's going on." I suggested grabbing and holding his hand.
"Yea, yea let's go. I feel insane right now, so maybe someone else can prove that I am not." He looked at me again, nodded his head, and we walked back toward the stairs.
